Default Charms Lesson 1

It was bright and early on Friday morning. The weekend was just ahead, but there was a full day of classes ahead of the students. As Piers had posted on the noticeboard, Charms class was taking place in the kitchens that day. So, outside of the kitchens, in front of the tapestry, Piers stood, waiting for his students to arrive. He knew that some of them wouldn’t look at the noticeboard, so he fully expected some of them to arrive late.

Now, some students might have a guess at what the lesson today was about, but then again, they might not. He hadn’t given any clues about what to expect (partially because he knew some of them might skip class if they knew). So there he stood, outside the kitchen tapestry, waiting innocently for his students to arrive.

OOC: Welcome to charms class! Keep in mind that while this is the first OOC charms lesson this term, this is not the first charms lesson that your characters are attending. I'll begin the lesson officially in about 24 hours!

Class Progression:
1. Greetings and Question 1
2. Replies and Mini Activity
3. Replies and Question 2
4. Replies and Main Activity

Blake thought about it .. had he ever really seen his dad clean. And it appeared that like him several of his classmates also had muggles mums. "I'd second the Scourgify answer, my dad uses that to clean his cauldrons and stuff." Gave it a good scrub, that was one of the many reasons Blake was glad to be a wizard, watching him mum scrub stuff by hand just seemed boring ... and took so much longer.

Jillian didn't really grow up with a mother that she can watch clean but her dad could be an example to this since he is technically both her mother and her father. "my father uses Scourgify as a cleaning spell" quite often too. She doesn't live in a muggle household but muggles have awesome ways to clean. Her aunt and uncle came into mind when it comes to this.

She was aware that she had the same answer with Naya so she wanted to added another answer... "My aunt has this hom-bot robot vacuum cleaner. It's a device that you leave lying around the floor and it just automatically cleans your floor. It's pretty awesome" yeah, it was just like magic. She kind of wants one too.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Maybe her Head of House wasn’t too fond of her that morning? Was that why he seemingly didn’t pay attention to her and her greeting enough to return one? Whatever. Claudine didn’t care. Instead, she chose to observe her classmates as usual. There were so many that were cheerful, some that were sleepy. And then there was Curtis who was now back. Claudine secretly hoped his suspension hadn’t mellowed him; she thought his rebellious nature was a hoot.

Did so many of the others have to take the question so seriously? The part about their mother, at least. Surely they had seen family members friends use Cleaning spells? Claudine raised a hand from her position towards the back of the gathering. Did Fuller-Thompson see her hand or was some tall student blocking her?

“The Skurge Charm.’’ Technically it was a cleaning spell… Also, no. She hadn't seen that used by her mom as she too did not have one anymore.

Isla made neither a comment nor a facial expression one when the professor mentioned something about getting out of bed. What was it with classes and being so early anyway? She was usually up late doing homework, and she wouldn't exactly use the words 'glad' and 'out of bed' in the sentence. Anyway...

Isla parents were both magical, so she'd grown up with plenty of cleaning spells going on around the house. She was sure that once she was of age and could do magic at home, her parents would have her doing those very same spells, too. She nodded along as her classmates mentioned the spells she'd already thought of. Trying to come up with something different, she raised her hand. "There's the Vacuum Cleaner Spell," she said. "It pretty much makes your wand operate like a vacuum cleaner."

Charlie had found the kitchen only weeks before, thanks to some help from her friend Alex, but that was a task in of itself. She wasn’t so sure she was going to like todays class since it was taking place in the kitchen. Things could go terribly wrong when professors made you meat in places that weren’t the classroom you were supposed to be in.

Sighing and listening to the first question she was ready to walk away right then and there. She absolutely didn’t want to clean. Well maybe she would if they were charming things to clean themselves. At home her mother made her do it by hand so she would understand just how to do things in the event that she wasn’t magical. Psht like that was going to be a thing with her parents. But here she was.... completely clueless on what to tell their professor. Man she needed to write her mom a letter letting her know that she failed her on being prepared for Hogwarts and should really get to helping her younger sister out.

Now, see, Kaiser knew full well what Fuller-Thompson was getting at, that all he was looking for was an example of cleaning or tidying charms, even if wasn't necessarily a mother they'd seen cast them, but any sort of guardian, or really anyone at all. Or just a spell they knew themselves already, and he knew a few. But it actually worked out great that he had specifically asked what spells they'd seen their mother's perform, because Kaiser had neither the energy nor the motivation to make any contribution to anything at all ever, for reasons that were not relevant to anything or anyone here today. The point was, he had the opportunity to pretend to take the question literally, to just quietly skulk stand well back, hands shoved deep into his pockets, and say nothing at all. Nope, no mothers here.

He had no desire to make a remark about it either, though part of him was oddly tempted to do so, to just be kind of awkward. Co-resident Cora had that part covered, at least, and Kaiser glanced her way briefly, then looked instead at the tapestry, and maintained his silence.

"Oh, dear, Professor, that was a bit sexist. Like you think only girls should do cleaning?" Phoebe clucked her tongue at him, but she was much more interested in why they hadn't gone into the kitchen yet. Wait. Were they gonna clean the kitchen?

And not eat FOOD in the kitchen?????

Phoebe's perky little smile faded and she glared at the pear that would let them into the kitchen. What if it smelled like food in there but no one let them HAVE ANY?

Time to focus. "My dad uses the Locomotor Mortis spell to sweep the floor. And my mum blows up cauldrons, so she basically just replaces them and never cleans them."

"Um," her hand shot up before she really knew the answer, but drawing on her personal experience, Bernie quickly came up with something, "My mum doesn't know charms, cos she's a Muggle and all that, but my charming Charms professor did a spell on a scrub brush one time, so that soap kept continuously coming out of it, and I used the brush to clean some school boats." True story!

And Curtis' dad definitely knew what she was referencing.
Well, her hand went up rather quick. Quicker than her brain, it almost seemed for a moment, but - ah, there it was. Her mother was a muggle, which was fine, but he hadn’t meant for the question to be taken so literally.

It was funny, though, that she seemed so chipper about her answer about the charm he had placed on that scrubber brush when he remembered her whining about it so much at the time. ”Yes, that was quite good, wasn’t it?” Bet she loved that.

She was a muggle. She wasn't able to use magic anyway...
Piers nodded at the next response. ”Nothing like good team work,” he responded.

"My mum uses Tergeo when she cleans. Usually when she's dusting or trying to get something nasty off the table." Yes, Mrs. Sinclair had definitely used it when Avalon's sister spilled her entire case of quill ink on the brand new dining table. She had also used some other spells to tidy up in a hurry when guests dropped by unexpectedly, but Avalon couldn't remember the incantations.
”Tergeo is always a good option,” he replied to the next student. It was one of those classic, can’t-go-wrong cleaning spells.

Resisting the urge to yawn loudly Cole raised his hand to answer Professor Fullers question. "My mum likes to use the washing up spell, to quickly clear away the dirty dishes every day. I don't know if the spells has a fancier name than that."
And so was this one - a classic cleaning spell, that is. ”Yes, that’s quite a good one too.” That one was good for just setting up and walking away. But today he wanted the students to work a little harder, so they wouldn’t be doing that one.

And quite frankly? She found this question to be insulting! He could have left it the way he had first phrased it, but when he added that bit about 'mums', Nina found herself giving him a look. Maybe some of her peers never had to do their share of chores around the house, but Nina had been doing her own laundry since she was nine. And as such, she chose not to answer the question. In protest. And not because she didn't typically speak in lessons. It was the protest thing this time.

As for the question, she'd seen the careworkers around Stemp House do their fair share of cleaning charms of course, but that hadn't been what Professor Whatshisname had asked, was it? "Haven't seen my mum do any," she piped up, hoping to make him squirm a little for what he was no doubt about to make them all suffer through. "I ain't got one." A mum, that is.
Well, he should have seen that coming.

Honestly.

Didn’t prepare for that.

Piers grimaced. ”Ah.”

And..... that was it. Moving on.

He should've laughed at this, but nothing was tickling enough to do so. Also, he didn't want to think about them much right now so he decided to pubicly recall something else.

"My big brother uses some sort of motor charm on the sheets from the bed to fold and clean themselves off." Curtis said.
Oh, good he was participating. He half expected Curtis to say something about his OTHER dad doing all the dishes because Javy was an angel and cleaned up a lot. Thankfully he just stuck to a different example. ”Perfect. Thank you, Curtis.” He appreciated the effort he was putting in.

Naya was slightly less enthusiastic about the lesson than she had been a few minutes ago.

Raising her hand, she went about providing her answer. “My mother is a muggle too, so she didn’t use any spells. But I do know that Scourgify is a good spell for cleaning.” Cleaning was not exactly Naya’s favorite thing to do, by magic or otherwise.
He should have known that he would get a few of these responses too, but you know he really hadn’t meant for them to take the “mum” example so seriously. ”Yes, Scourgify is a great option.”

Another answer for scourgify. Piers nodded and then Jillian said something about a... vaccuum robot? ”Errr.. That sounds cool.” That sounded even easier than doing it with magic.

See, he could tell that this kid really didn’t want to clean, but that was TOO bad because he would probably (maybe) notice if she left early.

Wait, no --

”That’s not, no, that’s not what I was implying,” Piers said with a little defeated sigh. He really should have planned that better. Could they move on now?

”Err, great, thank you.” Okay, they were moving on.

Yes, yes, yes, those were all (for the most part) very good responses. At least these kids knew what cleaning charms were. There was some hope for them yet. Which they would need, because they were about to be faced with a lot of dishes that needed some good cleaning.

”Alright, good responses everyone. I’m glad you know spells to help your mum AND your dad around the house.” Because not only mums cleaned. He KNEW that, okay? And he was ready to move onto their first activity. ”We’re going to take a step into the kitchen now.” So yes, it was now time to confirm everyone’s fears that this lesson would be about cleaning dishes.

Piers took a step back toward the tapestry and reached over to tickle the pear. And once the kitchen doors opened, Piers stepped inside and gestured for the students to follow him in. Once they were inside, they would all see the dishes from breakfast stacked in the sink and next to the sink and on the counter and on the floor. Piers had given the elves the morning off (forced them away from the kitchen, more like it), so there were plenty of dishes to go around.

”Okay, everyone. There are plenty of dirty dishes here for everyone. I’m sure most of you older students know a good cleaning charm or two, but I’m going to teach you all another one today that maybe you haven’t practiced before, or that maybe that maybe some of you younger students haven’t learned yet.” Since Piers didn’t have a whiteboard handy in the kitchen, he pulled a large, rolled piece of parchment from his pocket and plastered it on the wall with a wordless sticking charm. It wrote:

Quote:
Dish Cleaning Charm
Incantation: “lava patina”
Wand Movement: swirl
”The charm I’ll be teaching today is is a dish cleaning charm. This charm is different from some other cleaning charms as it has been specifically created to wash dishes and sanitize them for future use. Not just to get the food off.” Because if a spell just got the food off, and not the germs, there would be a LOT more kids sick with the flu in this place.

”The charm is fairly easy,” Piers said, taking out his wand and pointing it at a stray dirty plate that was laying on the counter. ”Lava Patina,” he said, swirling his wand around the area of the plate. As he moved his wand, the spell took effect and the food residue from the plate disappeared, leaving the plate nice and shiny. ”As you say the incantation, you’ll move your wand in a swirling motion around the item and it will get it clean.” Easy as that.

”I want you all to practice this charm first. Take a few minutes and practice the incantation and match it with the wand movement. If you’d like to try it on a dish, feel free, but we’ll move on to cleaning the dishes in a moment.” No need to worry, there was MUCH cleaning to be done.

And with that... ”Go ahead,” Piers said, gesturing for them to practice. Weren’t they excited?

OOC: Welcome to our mini activity! Feel free to have your characters moan and groan practice the incantation for this spell. You can have them work with a friend or alone. If you have a question for the professor, please put "Professor" in your post title. Class will move on in approximately three days.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Fiona watched carefully as the spell was demonstrated. She vaguely recalled having seen her parents each use this particular spell before but she didn't know the fundamentals until now. She uttered ”Lava Patina,” a few times to herself until she had achieved the right pronunciation. Fiona then practiced the swirling wand movement without speaking the incantation.

The young Slytherin decided to put the spell to use on a particularly grimy dinner plate that had been used to serve something very greasy. She aimed her wand at the plate and as she swirled her wand and said firmly and clearly, ”Lava Patina,” the plate became immaculately clean.

Washing dishes was probably Blake's least favorite chore of all time, but .. with magic maybe it could be much more fun, although .... he still couldn't use magic at home during the summer Holidays so that was a bummer....

But none the less would be good to have for future use... so practicing the spell out loud a few times "Lava Patina" to get the hang of it, Blake thought he was ready .. but he didn't really want to wash dishes for the entire class either.

Lava patina? Luh-va Pah-tee-na? Love-a Patin-A? Jillian repeated the word quite a few times in her head. She was trying to make it sound like the way the professor said it earlier. It sounded like a simple spell so she needed to enunciate on the words well. Sounded more like a tongue twister than it is a spell.

Anyway...Is this a plot to get them to help in cleaning the dishes seeing as a random stack is in front of the professor? Hehe.

She moved her hand into a swirling motion and practiced the spell, this time in an audible tone "lava patina!" huh. That sounded okay. She repeated the spell once again- this was a practice round of course.

Austin glared at Nina. Why does she have to be so...he didn't know. But ve didn't like her. He turned his attention back to the professor though as he started talking again. Okay. Okay. Got it. When he was done, Austin glanced around and took a dish. He figured that he'd start by actually doing the spell.
"lava patina!"
At least that's what he hoped he said. Instead, when he did the swirl motion with his wand, the dish slipped out of his hand and went flying. He glanced and cringed when it hit Nina in the head. Oh no!

Ahhh, unfortunately Naya was right. They were going to be cleaning. Not only cleaning, but more specifically, washing dishes. Naya thought she had escaped that chore when she left home and now it could not be avoided. At least there was a spell for dish washing and they wouldn’t have to do it the old fashioned way.

Naya listened and scribbled down a few notes when the professor demonstrated the spell. They were meant to practice, so she took out her wand and got to work. First, she repeated the incantation several times. ”Lava Patina, Lava Patina, Lava Patina, Lava Patina.” The wand movement seemed simple enough, so Naya thought she should combine everything and try out the spell. Picking up a rather nasty plate, she moved her wand in a swirly motion above the plate. “Lava Patina”, she said as she kept swirling. The crusty plate appeared to get less crusty, little by little. It was working. Thank Merlin. From the looks of things, she’d have to do the spell about a million more times before they got through all of the dishes.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine was pleased for two reasons: 1. Fuller-Thompson saw her hand and 2. No one else had given the answer she had prior to him getting to her. It was always her goal to think out of the box. So, now that it was established they were studying a Cleaning Charm today and the fact that they were now stepping into the kitchen, this meant that they were going to be doing some hardcore cleaning. It came as no surprise that dishes were to be the second focus of the lesson.

So many dishes.

The Snakette was unfazed. It wasn’t her concern about how many they got done before the lesson ended. She began to practice. “Lava Patina. Lava… Patina. Lava Patina.”

Lava? Did that mean there was heat like actual lava, and this heat was what sanitised the plates? She wondered about this and raised her hand. She wiggled her fingers a little to attract her Head of House’s attention and when she did, she asked him the exact question she had thought of. “Does the ‘lava’ part of the spell means that there’s heat that kills the germs to sanitise the dishes?’’

She was pretty sure this was Professor Fuller-Thompson's way of giving them busy work. But even with that thought, Nina followed the crowd inside. Watching him with apprehension as he taught the spell. It was easy enough, but of course she would still practice. It would be absolutely reckless to do otherwise.

"Lava patina," she spoke quietly, making sure to enunciate. Lava patina, lava patina, lava patina. Incantations came to her easily as the latin words were so very similar to Spanish. "Lava patina," again she spoke quietly. Once she felt that she had practiced the incantation enough, she reached for her wand to--Um, hello. Yes.

Nina was screaming.

Not for long, but she did shriek! quite loudly when a rogue plate made contact with her forehead. It was brief contact, but she felt the sharp pain run down the entire length of her body. The plate broke into a few large pieces onto the floor, but Nina's main concern was with the throbbing forehead-pain. Which is why she immediately stopped practicing the spell and instead began clutching her throbbing head. She was slightly teary-eyed, but she wasn't about to cry during a lesson!

It would bruise, surely. But what she didn't anticipate was looking like a unicorn because ..... a bump was most definitely growing on her forehead.

Austin ran over to her and started to apologize.
"I'm sorry!" he frowned and didn't know what he could do. She needed to be checked over. Austin glanced around and spotted the charms professor.
"Professor!" He shouted to get his attention. "We need your help!'

Cleaning charms. Yes, Carsyn knew the basic ones like scorgify and tergeo, but practically anyone over the age of five with magical background knew those. What the fifth year didn't anticipate was the fact that they would be learning a new one today, which was to clean the dishes. Uh, wasn't that for house elves and detention students?

The question she was about to ask, was one that literally Professor Fuller-Thompson answered like two seconds after introducing the spell. Oh, so this sanitized, which made sense but why were the other two more commonly known then? Why didn't MORE wizards and witches use the sanitizing one?? Is this a new spell?? Was it safe?

And then there was a shriek which directed the Gryffindor's gaze over at a certain Slytherin Sixth year (Nina) and Carsyn bit her lower lip to keep her composure. And the younger kid who had sent the dish flying was now calling for the professor to help. Eh, she might as well.... making her way over to the freezer, Carsyn dug some ice cubes from there and went back over toward the slytherins. "Here," she said, holding it out to Nina. She could take it or leave it, but if there was one thing she knew from athletic injuries, ice was a savior. Also this distraction was a savior from the manual labor of dishwashing.

There was NO food for them. Piles of dirty plates and silverware and sticky cups, but NO food. Did the professor know that he was disappointing all of them? That, in spite of having JUST come from the very breakfast that had made this mess, he was literally starving them? DID HE KNOW?

Phoebe half heartedly whipped her wand around as she poked through the remains of the pots and pans near the stove, looking for maybe a forgotten stack of pancakes. Toast. Bacon. Anything. "The floor is lava. The flooooooor is laaaaaaaava." Was that what the incantation was? Seemed weird.

Yes, what a neat trick, professor. At least they were going to be allowed to use magic during today's chore session. Bernie followed the professor through the portrait and into the kitchen, briefly wondering what they would do if THAT portrait started acting up next. She watched him do the spell and nodded, TOTALLY confident that she'd rather do dishes with magic the rest of her life than the old Muggle way.

Sidling up to the sink next to Claudine, Bernie rolled up the sleeves of her robe and got started. "Lava patina," she recited, moving her wand in a swirl. Yay! The first dish was clean! She beamed and started on the next one, wincing at the sound of someone else breaking a plate. Of course, she didn't see who did it, but it didn't sound great.

Ah, yes, they all looked so happy to be cleaning dishes. Now that they were off practicing, Piers crossed his arms and weaved in between students to make sure they were all staying on task. When he saw Claudine raise her hand, he stepped over to her to listen to her question.

"Good question, but no. The 'lava' part refers to the Latin translation of 'wash'." Or something like that. He didn't speak Latin, obviously, but he knew that it referenced washing dishes. Not lava or... volcanoes or whatever.

Piers began meandering through the students some more while the practiced. Everyone seemed to be doing just fine until he heard somebody scream and heard a plate clatter and shatter to the floor.

That wasn't good.

Piers turned around and saw Nina holding her forehead and Austin looking guilty. Now, Nina was a bit of a sourpuss, but Piers still rushed over to make sure she was okay and hopefully not bleeding. "What happened?" he asked, looking around, his eyes landing on Austin.

Then he looked back at Nina. "Let me see it," he said gently, wanting to check and see if she was bleeding at all. Either way, she'd probably want to see the healer, at least for the pain. Oh, and there was Carsyn with some ice. That was nice of her.

Austin blinked and set his wand on a near by table.
"It was an accident professor, I swear. I was practising the spell amd the dish went flying and hit her head," he said. Austin glamced between Nina and professor. Was this what he got for talking bad about her?

Following in the crowd of student's that entered the kitchens after Professor Fuller-Thompson he immediatley took note of all the dirty dishes. At least they weren't going to be dissecting frogs. Turning his attention to their professor as he demonstrated the new dishwashing spell Cole's first reason reaction was that it seemed handy and fairly simple. Sadly they weren't going to be cooking or baking. Pulling out his wand he walked over to a little quieter part of the kitchen. He didn't want everyone to stare at him while he practiced reciting the incantation. "Lava Patina, Lavaaaaaaa Patinaaaaaaa, Lava Patina." Figuring that he got the hand of the incantation by now he started to practice the swirling wand movement.

Cole was about try his effects on a dirty plate when Nina's shrieking stopped him mid step. Quickly turning around on the spot it didn't take long before he deciphered who was involved and why. It was very nice of Carsyn to get ice for Nina like a good prefect. Assuming that his assistance wasn't needed since their professor was examining Nina's injuries Cole turned back to the dirty plate behind him. Aiming his wand over the dirty plate that stunk of tuna he uttered with confidence "Lava Patina!" as he swirled his wand over the plate and around.

Oh. She had been way off with her reasoning but Claudine didn’t mind being contradicted. At least now she knew what the ‘lava’ part meant. “Thanks, Professor,’’ she said as she noticed Bernie beside her. The Slytherin returned the smile and got to work on the wand movement. She wasn’t in a rush to actually practice on a plate just yet. Besides, Fuller-Thompson did say they would move onto cleaning the dishes in a few.

The sound of a shattering plate made her wince and she glanced at Bernie. “Honestly, I expected you to be the first one breaking a plate.’’ Because her friend was always up to something or something was always happening when Bernie was around. As she spoke, she was doing the swirly motion with her wand. “Why do you look so eager to clean these dishes?”

Bernie glanced over her shoulder to see who had broken the dish, and rolled her eyes as she noticed that it was Austin, the annoying, argumentative Slytherin. Looked like Nina was somehow involved too, but that was none of her business.

"I hate doing dishes," Bernie answered Claudine, "but not enough to break them. I can't wait to use this spell at home!!!!" Maybe not this summer, but by the time she'd be of age, of course. The second year picked up another plate. "Lava patina!"

Phoebe had found a pancake that wasn't gross and hadn't made it up to breakfast, and she was now satisfied with her search for a snack. She rolled it up and took turns waving her wand with one hand and her pancake with the other as she continued practicing the incantation. It occurred to her that her classmates were not saying 'the floor is lava', and she mimicked their words.

"Lava Patina. Lava Patina." Yeah, that felt good. She was ready to try it on the corner of that dirty plate. She whispered the incantation and cast with her pancake, which went flying into the dirty dishes. NO. PANCAKE.
