Being overworked and overwhelmed is no good for any Ministry employee, and members of Magical Law Enforcement are no exception, much as they might like to think otherwise. When the time comes to take a breather in the middle of the work day, the break room is the best place for Level Two employees to do so. Once you make sure there's nothing urgent that needs your attention, you're encouraged to take breaks and utilise this space to refortify when necessary, and to mix with your fellow employees.
There are some tables, some chairs, a couple of sofas for lounging (or napping, if you want to risk it), and a counter for preparing hot drinks. Careful when making your coffee if you're not used to the stuff on Level Two; by popular demand, it's strong stuff. As well as drinks, there are snacks available on the shelves, magical appliances for drinks and food prep, and two vending machines - one with snacks (put in a request if you want it stocked with something specific, but know it'll be very low down on the list of priorities) another with water and soft drinks, magical and muggle alike.
Shelves and cupboards are installed above and below the counter - charmed to keep food at its optimal storage temperature - for those not yet too suspicious to store their lunch here unattended. Make sure to label anything you bring in; if someone nicks it at least you can say you did that much.

Oh for certain the solicitors and barristers were more likely to drink coffee then the Security team. They had more long night ands boring days pouring over law and cases. Hugo would know. He’s spent enough of his own time pouring over and arguing cases in the courtrooms below. He’d made the joke about Security purely because Simon was in Security. It wasn’t any fun to take the mickey out of people who weren’t here to banter back.
”Whatever coffee I make, you would do well to stay away from it.” Coffee was not his thing. The brewing it, not the drinking it. Sure, he had a cup here or there always with cream and sugar. He’d been banned from brewing it years ago after mucking up a machine so badly they had had to replace it. ”It would likely be more of the - pave your driveway - var-ie-ty.” IHe had grabbed two cups and was pouring out the smoothie for both of them as he talked. He picked up one glass and handed it to Nova, then grabbed his own. ”Cheers,” he said, clinking his glass against her before taking a sip of his own. The brewing contest had been meant as a joke, but actually it did sound like it could be fun. Maybe just not coffee. ”Oh how about a fudge contest then Simon? Only nut-fudges though… You can be Head Nut Judge.” He leaned back against the counter as he sipped his smoothie.

Why did the Security team sound so… boring? Naturally, Nova would not say such a thing to either men present but this was her opinion for now. There must not be much going on with them during many days at the Ministry or when there isn’t a grand event where security was needed.
Okay. No judging for Mr. Bennett. “I see you being the type to judge Auror/YATI training competitions then!’’ It was just a gut instinct there but yes… Nova was sticking to those words. “Making a mental note of this right now, Mr. Bumblebee.” Nova closed her eyes and pressed an index finger on either side of her temple. “There!” Her eyes snapped open. “Seared into my brain for future reference.” The glass was accepted. There was an enthusiastic chinking of her glass against Bumblebee’s {thank goodness neither glass shattered}. “Mmm! This is quite good!” There was just enough of a hint of the strawberries there.

At least he wasn’t the only one where coffee wasn’t their thing. Something that could be compared to road tar definitely left some images that could be both amusing to imagine someone trying to drink it and dreadful, especially if it smelt anything it looked. Smoothies though, the department head seemed to have better luck, the beverage a hit with the young Paton as Simon continued to watch the two interact like trusted conspirators.
“Well, I was one of both myself,” he admitted to her with a nod. So, he was quite well versed in what to test them on, even if some of them thought he was beneath them. The security man had the unfortunate luck to have been taking a sip at the moment his boss had an idea about his fudge competition, the slightly elder man taken by surprise at his words and coughing in an attempt to keep from choking and trying to appear normal in front of their guest. “Right…” he made out as he found his voice again after a few moments. “Sounds like a plan.”

While some were able to enjoy lunch at noontime, it was not unheard of him to have a bite hours later. Some days, however, lunch wasn't even an option. Yesterday had been one of those days.
Today was a different matter. It was paperwork day, so the blond had taken the liberty of taking lunch at a normal time. Since he hadn't eaten the lunch he had brought the day prior, he was intent on gobbling up the deliciousness that had been stored in a container with his name on it. At the present moment, the Auror was rummaging through one of the cupboards. A defeated sigh sounded as he went to open the next one.
In which cupboard had he put his lunch, and was it still there? That was the great mystery of the day.

For the past few weeks, the Aurors had been piling up cases for him to review, so when he finally had the time to leave the Pensieve room for more than a snack, he thought he was dreaming. Of course, the man took care of himself by eating lunch every day, but he preferred to eat it quickly before returning to work. After all, a person's guilt or innocence depended on what he discovered in their memories.
But today was a slow day, so Kevin went straight to the breakroom for lunch. When he entered the room, he discovered only one other person. He didn't like crowds, so this was a good sign. He sat down and quietly placed his lunch box on the table. He was about to eat and ignore the other man, but his behavior was unusual. "Someone stole your lunch?" he asked as he watched him open up random cupboards. By the way, it wasn't him!

Besides the noises that came from poking around the cupboards and the occasional sigh, the break room had been rather quiet. Hearing someone enter the room hadn't gone unnoticed, but the man didn't pause in his hunt to acknowledge whoever had joined him in the space. The blond just carried on glancing through one cupboard and then transitioning to the next.
When the voice of one Kevin Hirase sounded, Frankie couldn't help but chuckle even though the search for his lunch was starting to make him a little impatient. Turning his head slightly, he glanced over at the slightly older man. "It's a possibility. Or the container grew a pair of legs in the past twenty-four hours and walked away. Haven't seen any lunch thieves or rogue containers wandering about, have you?"
The odds were, though, that his lunch was hidden in the depths of one of the remaining cupboards he had yet to check. There were only a few more that hadn't been opened at this point.

It felt fulfilling in a way, but the energy she had when the week started also dwindled away with the days. A break would be great. Ari was actually looking forward to the weekend, which she would spend resting and being in the company of her family, friends, and boyfriend. It was her routine now, ever since she started here, rinse and repeat.
By the counter and vending machines, Ari assessed her beverage options and found herself eyeing the soft drinks for a moment before toppling the idea down. She also forewent the coffee options, still a little wary of its strength. She'd heard it was notoriously strong for obvious reasons, which she would likely need on another day. So, for now, it was her and her bottled water against the world.
The blond uncapped her bottle and took a sip, her blue eyes skimming the break room for a place to occupy. Though she was a little tired, Ari still had the social battery for conversation. Spotting her fellow trainee, she decided to make her way towards her, catching a glimpse of the other girl's copy of Witch Weekly. "Hey. Room for one more?" Ari said, offering a small smile. She knew Nova a little. They graduated in the same class from Hogwarts, but Ari had never really gotten to properly talk to her before. Different circle of friends, likely. "Anything new there?" She had to make a nod to Nova's magazine.

Or in this case, former Quidditch stars turned coaches - Raju Misra. The man was DASHING. Such SMOULDERING looks. And that hair? PERFECTION. The article featured the man and his boyfriend - an equally stunning man - in Italy earlier this January. There was some speculation that the couple was looking to adopt a child. Now, Nova knew that the tabloids often got things wrong but she hoped this time, the Witch Weekly wasn’t. Such a gorgeous couple deserved all the best things in life!
The trainee FINALLY tore her gaze away from the former Indian Captain to peer up at the owner of that voice. “Ari! Adne!” Woops! Nova had almost called the other girl ‘Ari’. They weren’t close like that for her to be calling Ariadne by nicknames. But maybe it would change now that they were training together? “Just the usual gossip. Ah, Witch Weekly. Ariadne truthfully was not a frequent reader of magazines, but sometimes they were entertaining. When the gossip was so ridiculously out of this world, it made her laugh. Still, she preferred looking into the fashion sections instead. When one of your mums was a former model, it kind of becomes a thing to admire the gorgeous clothing pieces of the season.
"Ari's fine." She caught the quick addition for her complete first name, which amused the blond. She didn't particularly mind, but Ariadne sounded so formal now considering the work setting. It was their break, sure, but they were still in the ministry. "Consider my lips sealed," Ari added with a smirk as she found herself a spot to sit on. Yes, she knew Nova's boyfriend, but Ari doubted that any conversation between her and Kennedy would lead to a topic of Quidditch personalities, particularly those who've caught Nova's eyes. None of her business, really. Besides, it would be a hypocrite of her to say she did not know how to appreciate beauty even though she too was in a relationship. Ari was fairly certain Tommy had eyes, too. She can't really blame anyone for having eyes and admiring other people.
As for the Nova's question, Ari had to shake her head. "No, not really. Quidditch is alright, but I prefer combat sports." Should anyone see Ari watching Quidditch matches in the future, however, she would be doing that in support of her friend Jasper Botros, one of the Magpies' beaters. That was pretty much her only connection to the sport.

With there being a father-daughter duo sharing a department, labeling lunch had to be more deliberate. Simple 'Paton' labels couldn't be used anymore, otherwise the odds of accidentally eating each other's lunch by mistake (i.e. him eating the younger Paton's) were high. Now the labels for his food typically read something along the lines of 'DH Paton,' 'Frankie Paton,' or 'Papa Bear Paton,' depending on who prepared the meal.
Such a container was what he was after with it being time for lunch, and today's label was something he couldn't recall after all of the meetings and other department head business he had attended to that morning. Not that it mattered much since he did remember which cupboard his meal had been placed in earlier that morning, which was exactly where the man was heading toward the moment he stepped through the threshold of the break room.
The young girls seated in the space did not go unnoticed by him, especially with one of its occupants being Nova. For a few moments he debated whether he should say something or not. In the end, he opted for an awkward dad wave -- one that suggested that there was no need to pay him any more attention -- and carried on with his mission, fully intent on quickly locating his lunch and taking it back to his office so he wouldn't be intruding on the YATI bonding that must have been happening.
Plus Frankie knew there was no way he could hold his own in a conversation revolving around whatever Witch Weekly had to offer this week.

OH! Fashion! This was something the future Aurors can bond over since Nova was on the lookout for new and chic fashion items. Therefore she would never fault Ariadne if she had an obsession with that section of magazines.
Very observant, Ariana. Very observant indeed. Nova could not say she was surprised that Ariadne had picked up on that little attempt of a coverup. After all, Aurors were supposed to be alert most if not all of the time. “Ari it is then! There’s no shortened version of my name. Unless you want to call me ‘No’.” A comical face was pulled as she shook her head. “That’s a big no, no.” Her nickname - which only her parents called her - was ‘Star’ and that was not a privilege given to anyone else. “Thanks!” Nova winked. Certain shenanigans were best left here at work!
Nova tilted her head at Ari, momentarily forgetting the magazine on her lap. “Any favourites?” she asked with interest. This interest was definitely an asset for the fellow YATI.
The instant the Papa Bear stepped into the Break Room, he was noticed by Nova. Obviously he was here for his lunch, which Nova had put together herself, hence her favourite label: Papa Bear Paton. There was even a little pink sticker in the form of a heart next to the label. “Hi, Dad!” Nova waved enthusiastically, completely ignoring the fact that his was an awkward one. “I mean, Mr. Paton? Sir Paton?” Bleh! That all sounded so wrong! The poor girl didn’t think she had it in her to be that formal in the workplace all of the time. “You’re welcome to join us if you like.”

Ariadne wouldn't mind talking about anything, though she would prefer discussing other things than most. Fashion was one of them, so that surely would be worth bonding over.
It was also good that Nova didn't outright call her Ariana. Not that the blond would be offended by it, rather she'd want for Nova, her former classmate and now her fellow trainee, to actually use her name. Or nickname. 'Ari' would be easy to remember, yes? "Definitely won't be using that," the former Ravenclaw let out a short laugh before taking another sip of her water. Not only was 'No' awkward as a nickname, it would also be weird verbally disagreeing with Nova in any situation if she were to use it. Nevertheless, to Nova's thanks, Ari winked back as well.
"Favourites." Ari repeated, trying to decide to which sport Nova was asking the question. "For combat, I both box and fence. For Quidditch teams, I am probably not as well-versed as you are with them, but I'd have to say the Magpies. Jasper Botros is a friend." She hadn't particularly looked into the recent statistics, but being friends with one of the players was a good enough reason in Ariadne's eyes. "And you? Do you have a favourite team?"
To additional company, Ari never minded as well yet somehow she was surprised to hear Nova calling for her dad in the break room. Sometimes, the blond would forget that her department head was, in fact, her fellow trainee's parent. Ari bit her lower lip at Nova's addressing-her-dad-slash-employer dilemma so as not to laugh or look too amused at the dissonance. "Hello, Sir. Yeah, please come join us if you'd like," Ari said, sitting a bit more properly at that. "I bet you know more about Quidditch teams and players than I do." Since that had been hers and Nova's discussion.
Also so that Ari could observe the whole...family and work dynamic up close. On top of making sure Mr. Paton remembers her name, too, of course.

The tail-end of their conversation was overheard as he meandered over to the cupboards. The mention of the Magpies was enough to let him know they were talking Quidditch. Such a topic was something he could contribute to, though perhaps not on the same wavelength as the two trainees. Not that he felt the desire to interrupt their discussion with his own thoughts. Food was very much on the mind.
A smile tugged at his lips when he opened the cupboard and retrieved the container that was meant for him. The label and sticker combination was a clear reminder of who had prepared their lunches for the day. Though that led to wonderings about the contents within the container.
Such thoughts were fleeting as Nova was making his quick in-and-out be anything but quick. As he turned to face them, a chuckle did escape him at all of the names she was addressing him by. It was rather amusing seeing her try to be so formal, though he too felt weird being called 'Mr. Paton' and 'sir' by his own offspring. Even being called that by everyone else made him feel the same way. While he knew it was professional and a sign of respect and all that mumbo jumbo, he felt such formalities were so old fashioned.
"Considering it is lunch time, I think we can do without all the misters and sirs," he told his daughter, though the statement was also directed to Ariadne. "And are you sure? I might bore you both."

Nova grinned. Ariadne had laughed and this was good enough for her since she liked making others laugh. Perhaps that was why she could sometimes get so silly. “Much appreciated!’’ Nova paused for a beat. “You know, this is the first time I’ve understood what a horrible nickname my name could make.” How had that boyfriend of hers not yet resorted to calling her ‘No’? Kennedy’s brain usually found something to annoy her with so she wouldn’t put it past him to figure this one out soon, anyway.
Both actually! Nova welcomed the opportunity to learn all the things; she was always such an eager beaver. “Excellent choices. Say… perhaps sometime we can have a go at one or the other?” She might not be as adept as Ariadne but she was always on the lookout for a challenge. “That’s lovely! It really is nice to be supportive of a friend.” Nova could actually picture Ariadne enthusiastically cheering Botros on. “Not really. A few of Ken’s relatives are on teams like Tutshill Tornados and Chudley Cannons so I do support them.”
Nova shot a glance at Ari through her dilemma and was not surprised to see her fellow trainee holding back laughter. “Go ahead. Laugh if you need to because I am NEVER getting used to calling him ‘Sir’ or ‘Mister’.” It was so weird! The man was always ‘Papa Bear’ to her.
But just what would Papa Bear would find for lunch. A healthy slice of chicken lasagna along with an equally healthy helping of garden salad. He was welcome. “Oh, thank goodness! Being formal makes you sound way older than you are.” Her papa was quite young; anyone could see that. Nova patted the empty space beside her. “Not if you tell us some of your exciting Auror stories. I bet Ari would love that.”

Ari smiled a little and shrugged her shoulder. "It's a good thing you know now. Better late than never, so they say." You're quite welcome for it, Nova. Ari would quip, but they weren't in casual joking friendship terms yet. Eventually, it could happen. "Besides, Nova works fine. It's short but sweet." Unique too, given Ari didn't know anyone else with such a name.
"Certainly not against the idea. But you would have to let me know if I should go easy on you," Ari had to tease, the curl on the end of her lips an indication that it was a remark made in jest. Though, truthfully, she would go easy on Nova as it wouldn't be fair to go all out when the other girl hadn't any boxing experience. She had to even the playing field, or it wouldn't be fun. "Mhm, dare I say that life was made for him." It had always seemed that Jasper had his eyes on the Quidditch route, so Ari couldn't be any more supportive. "I get that, though, not having a particular favourite." Ari had never really been drawn to Quidditch even though she was athletic herself. Combat was better, at least for her.
Laugh, though? Ari wasn't going to laugh, but she was going to indulge herself into smiling ever so slightly. "What are you talking about? I'm not laughing," she had to point out. Because, see, she wasn't laughing!
Formalities with your parent? Ari couldn't relate. Merlin and Morgana, she'd rather not at all. The current dynamic between Nova and Mr. Paton was exactly the reason why.
"Not at all, Sir." Ari caught herself too late, but it was out of habit that she was addressing her department head in such a way, alright? Can't really blame her. As to Nova's suggestions, Ari very much nodded her head. "Now that doesn't sound boring at all." Auror stories were definitely not on the boring end of discussions.

Fingers lightly tapped on the container as he lingered by the cupboards for just a moment. He could tell that the whole what-do-I-call-my-dad-who-is-also-my-boss thing was a bit awkward. Normally such things were usually handled with humour and purposefully injected with a healthy dose of of fatherly awkwardness. However, this particular situation was different; Nova was no longer a child, and the professional setting did demand a level of formality.
The entire concept of being called 'Sir' or 'Mister' in the office setting by his daughter was a reminder of the passage of time, something Frankie was keen on ignoring. He preferred to think of himself as young at heart, and his children, including Nova, as forever kids in his mind. Yet, reality crept in, and he acknowledged that they were all growing and evolving, even if he sometimes wished otherwise.
"Well, Dad will do just fine during lunch when we're on the clock," he told Nova, still amused with his daughter's battle with how he should be addressed when on the job. Turning to the other trainee, he added, "And Frankie is fine with me, if you feel comfortable with that." Otherwise he supposed the sirs, misters, etc. will have to do as it was the proper thing to do and all of that jazz.
With both Nova and the other trainee expressing their desire for him to join them, Frankie took the seat beside Nova and placed the container on the table. "Auror stories it is then," he declared, eager to shift the focus to something more familiar and comfortable. "Where shall we begin? The most intense missions, or perhaps a tale from my early days as a trainee?" he asked as he then lifted the lid, revealing the meal that had been stored within.
