Having always had a penchant for rigging things with curses, it isn't advised that anyone try opening the door to this office unless having been invited to do so. The curses are rotated randomly but all are very much present and inconvenient if not outright deadly should you try to let yourself in. If you wish to have a word with the Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement, you'll find it more useful to set a appointment beforehand as she won't always be in office.

If it's an emergency or you happen to not be an employee on this level and don't know this procedure, simply write your name on the board by the door and Lex will be with you the moment she can pull herself away from whatever she's got her hands in.

On the inside, you'll notice how spacious the room is, largely thanks to a few well placed expansion charms. Her dislike for being cooped up in the office is slightly lessened by increasing the space. Made the walls feel less like they were closing in.

The furniture is as comfy as she bothered to ensure and the books on the shelves are largely untouched and unused--but don't they look impressive?

The chocolate fountain in the corner is none of your business and should be left alone.

Being a workaholic, never wanting to be still, having had no interest in children, Alexa Cambridge had been absolutely losing her mind. She distinctly remembered begging the boss to be back at work well in advance of the end of her maternity leave when she'd finally had enough. Emm stayed in the daycare by the atrium and she regained her braincells.

"You're in luck, Level 2 is full of adult conversation and non-kid related activities and we're happy to welcome you back to the side of the living." Mombies were a real thing. That half awake state from lack of sleep and screaming children. Very real.

"How soon were you fixing to get back to work?"

Lucille was walking to the office of Alexa Cambridge, the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, her carefully manicured hands holding a poster each. She was on a mission to ask if the DMLE would like some foliage. Having not been around Level Two before, Lucille saw the board outside the door and moved the poster in her right hand so that her left hand was carrying both as she wrote her name and waited to be let in.

"Hello there. My name's Lucille Pembrooke and I work as a greenhouse caretaker at the Department of Environment Regulation and Protection. I've come here to ask you if you're interested in having some plants around your department."

Lucy unrolled one of the posters and showed it to Alex. "This plant is the brainchild of the head of DERP, Olly Emmons-Clarke, Head Botanist Archer Burton and Archer's wife Gabriella. The leaves are various shades of green and the flowers come in different colours. You can choose whichever colour you like. Now as for maintenance, just water the plant every few days."

The witch paused trying to think of what else to say. "Oh, a calming tea can be made from the leaves of the plant. The fertilising powder that has been used in the growing of the plant has a calming and pleasant scent."

She flashed a smile. "So, if you're interested in having some plants just tell me so and I'll supply your department."

Alexa had only just nudged the door open when the woman broke out into large chunks of exposition....about plants......

She left her patrol....to be asked if Law Enforcement wanted to look nicer and more environmentally conscious......?

Breathe Cambridge. Lex turned to Lucille, her expression neutral despite how unimpressed she currently grew. It didn't matter to her what sort of plants they were or what colour they happened to be. "I've got no one to spare for plant duty." They could start there. This whole "water every few days" thing, honestly who had the time to remember wilting plants in an office when the British Wizarding World was counting on you?

"I don't mind you putting plants around the place if that's what Olly wants," no skin off her back there, "But you'd have to send someone to maintain them too if that's the route you wanna take." They'd be decorative sure, but they'd also be dead pretty soon.

Lucille wasn't going to fail at her 'mission' despite the fact it seemed that Cambridge wanted Lucille to absquatulate. "Well, if it is okay with you, I'll choose four plants and deliver them to you for your department to allocate. I'll visit your department every few days to water them. I think it would be better if you and your employees decided where to place the plants."

Her eyes were starting to become fiery like her hair but at the moment she was keeping her temper in check.

She wasn't listening. It was clear in her response.

The Department Head looked about the corridor leading to her office, then back to her office. It would seem she really was in the DMLE. Yes. That hadn't suddenly changed. The nature of their jobs hadn't changed in the last few minutes and their level of preoccupation had surely not changed.

Lex shook her head. "Place the plants wherever you want. Meetings are a rare but necessary thing on this level. I'll be damned if I gather my employees to discuss the location of plants we don't particularly care about."

She didn't even wanna have meetings when they were NEEDED. Sure, she could pull a few employees aside to ask them where they wanted a bunch of plants on the level but it was about the silliest idea and she saw no need for it. At least the woman got the point on maintenance. Maybe she'd give this another shot at explaining. "It's your department that cares if there are plants, not mine. If you wanna come have spores floating around here, go nuts, but your department will do it yourselves and will put every thought into location and specie yourselves. We don't have the time to care."

Dark Wizards and general disorder everywhere and this one wanted her considering interior design? That was gonna be a hard pass.

Lucille was tempted to place a deadly plant in Cambridge's office but she decided against it. "Like I said, I'll sort things out when it comes to the plants," she said in a forcibly calm voice. "Guess your department is not skilled enough to water plants every few days," Lucy thought, bitterly.

"If it is okay with you, I'm going to grab those plants for your department," she said in a polite tone.

The more the woman spoke was the more incredulous Alexa grew. She couldn’t honestly believe she’d missed out on a patrol for this and really needed to get cracking on a personal assistant to filter through these “meetings”. For now, there was nothing to be done about it. Lex gave a one shouldered shrug of indifference. “Like I said, do what you want with the plants, its got nothing to do with me or my department personally.” And she genuinely didn’t care. DERP wanted plants here, that was fine, but also far too low on her list of priorities to be given much thought.

“Is that it?” Or did she have more matters to discuss that didn’t truly concern her?

Conley had climbed from the courtrooms to the second floor. He had taken his time, but it was still a bit of a climb. He could have taken the lifts, but he wanted the exercise. The sad part was, that he had thought he was in shape. Fact appeared to be that he wasn’t. Perhaps he should add some jogging to his exercise routine or up his swimming.

As he walked into the Law Enforcement offices, he took a moment to catch his breath and to shift around the books and scrolls he had hauled with him to the courtrooms. Part of his mind was still on the odd conversation between Airey and himself and the random DoM employee who had suddenly popped up and tried to pry her way into the discussion. The whole affair had made Conley very uncomfortable and he hoped Airey would take care of his noisy employee. But part of that conversation was why he was here, making his way over to Alexa’s office.

He took a moment to tuck a lock of hair back into the place, then knocked on Alexa’s office door.

It was a typical day for the department head, she was not in office. Those were the best days, the ones where she was not confined to her desk staring at documents until her eyes hurt. It was funny, when she’d chosen to give her cousin majority power in management of the family business to avoid paper work and the like to remain in the fast lane of law enforcement....she didn’t think she’d end up at a desk... with paper work and the like.....

It was the least amusing of all ironies. Thankfully, there were still plenty of days when she was needed out in the field or elsewhere.

Today wasn’t so much a field day but rather one over in the courtrooms. A trial that required both herself and the Minister to be present. One that would last for the remainder of the week—and that was only if things went according to plan. Still, she wouldn’t complain. It was time away from the mountains of paper work she had little interest in.

Approaching her door, Lex found Conley mid knock. The woman stopped just a few feet from him. “Something I can be doing for you?”

Apparently it was sneak up on Conley day. Had he known Alexa was in the courtrooms, he could have saved himself a lot of trouble and time and sweating. Maybe Conley has been too long out of the field himself - seven years ago the girl in the alcove would never have been able to pop up like she had and neither would Alexa. Conley's shoulders gave a shrug, his head twitching just a bit in irritation at himself, but as he turned he quickly put on his best diplomatic smile.

"Alexa," he shifted his armload again, mentally thinking he should get a shoulder bag or make his coordinator follow him around carrying everything (which Conley would never do but the thought was fun to consider at least). "Are you busy? I have a few things I need to discuss with you. But I can come back." Granted it be within reason - because it was kind of important.

The diplomatic smile she could have done without. It didn't grease the wheels of business in any way and didn't leave her any more amenable than a scowl would have. Lex nodded her own greeting to the man as she moved up to her door. "Depends." Her voice was distracted as she spoke. Most of her attention was on removing the curses typically placed on her door. How many of them were in this rotation again? "Tell me what you want then I'll tell you if I'm busy." That was how impromptu meetings worked. Alexa Cambridge did not commit until she knew what she was committing to. Granted, she didn't have a problem calling things off even after the fact but it made things easier to not begin at all.

Blonde brows furrowed as several non-verbal attempts at disarming her office door proved futile. It reminded her of the dead zone the department had hit some time back...only there was nothing dead about this door. The charms remained stubbornly in tact.

Lex swore, half tempted to give the door a kick but thinking better of it. A trip down to the healers was the last thing she needed.

Reluctantly, she turned to Conley. Hazel eyes looked on at him expectantly. He wasn't just going to stand there, was he?

Well, Hello to you too! Conley thought as his smile widened just a little. It was like armor to him. He’d found over the years that the smile helped keep his own emotions in check and that sometimes, it disarmed other people. IN spite of the big smile, he wondered though, if he had done something that had upset the woman who was now swearing – at a door no less. At least it wasn’t at him, or at least not yet. Those hazel eyes staring back at him didn’t help relay any form or hospitality or diminish the feeling that she did not like him. Nope…He had the sinking feeling that Alexa Cambridge would rather hit him with a bat boogey hex then talk to him. Why though? He had no clue.

He resisted the urge to spit back at her that he wasn’t here to shoot the breeze or invite her to lunch (even if he was a little hungry). Instead he, once again, shifted the book and scrolls in his arms (his triceps were starting to burn a little) and said in as pleasant a voice as he could muster, ”Identity theft, VISAs issues, and possible expatriation.“ His own hazel eyes traveled from hers to the door and back. He wasn’t going to ask if she needed help. He had a feeling an offer would result in his being hit with a bat boogey hex. ”I can come back,” he turned, prepared to leave.

Ah, boring bureaucratic things then. Not something she would ever be in a rush to discuss and by his offer to return at another point, it didn’t sound like something he was in too much of a rush to discuss either. Brilliant. Alexa turned to her door again, wary of any physical attempts to pry it open but seeing no other way. What a fix.

Her right shoulder rose in a half shrugging motion, the indifference almost palpable as it settled between them.

“Come back if you want to. Not sure the next time I’ll be free and in office but it’s your gamble to take.” If he didn’t want to have this conversation now, she would take herself down to Level 3 again. Perhaps this time someone of use would be able to get this situation sorted.

Feeling her frustration rising, the woman made the decision to take a step away from her door again, just to avoid doing anything rash.

No, it was actually her gamble to take. However, he wasn’t going to sit here and play chicken. It wasn't professional and he just wasn't in the mood to do it. If he wanted to keep playing games, he would have kept working for the ICW. If she wanted to let people who weren’t supposed to be in the country wander around causing who-knows-what kind of problems than that was her prerogative. After all, it was her department who was going to have to deal with it. He had been trying to be nice and proactive about it and if she didn’t want to hear his report about the increase in identify theft and other issues going on regarding illegal actives in Britain? Fine. He’d send her an interdepartmental airplane at some point.

After all, his time was money too. And right now he very much wanted to get rid of these books and find something to eat or drink or perhaps even throw. ”Very well,” he hefted up the large law book and scrolls in his arms as he watched her with the door. His smile was still plastered on his face, albeit a little smaller. ”Good luck with the door,” he said simply, inclining his head towards the wood. ”Might want to try the handle.” And yes, as soon as Conley said the words, he was sure she was going to spit back that there were wards on it or finally hit him with that bat boogey hex. But this was not his circus, not his monkeys.

In fact, he had his own monkeys to deal with right now. He turned heading for the door and called back over his shoulder. ”I’ll send you the reports.” What was one more report to write? He already was going to be sending out reports to MACUSA and the French and Indian ministries.

So...he walked here to walk away...? Right. Lex didn't know how things worked over in IMC and didn't want to but it was evident by the man's actions that that lot had more time on their hands to waste than any unit in her own department combined. Did she envy him? Hardly. Must have been outright boring if you were willing to head all the way to another department just to turn around and offer to send reports after.

If she ever got that bored, she'd go cause crime down in London herself--or kidnap her husband...admittedly the better and less controversial option. One that would keep her in this line of employment.

Again, Lex shrugged, not particularly bothered by his choice either way. "Like I said, do what you want." But if he was leaving, then so was she. At no point did she feel the need to acknowledge his ignorant comment on her door. It didn't surprise her that he just "wouldn't get it" and she saw no point in wasting or exerting any sort of energy on him. Instead, Lex turned as well and headed back the way she'd come.

Next stop, Level 3.

Jake had been sure to arrange an appointment with Alexa, rather than just stopping by out of the blue, figuring he would probably be unlikely to find her in the office if he'd gone about it that way. It wasn't an urgent matter, would only really need to be addressed before the new year, and he had made that much clear when setting up the appointment.

Though he had reached the office a couple of minutes early - bad idea to show up late when you were asking for something, right? - Jake went ahead and knocked all the same. He tugged at each of his sleeves to get them at exactly the same length, then folded his arms across his chest, effectively making the first action completely pointless.

Jake had always been a smart one, ever since she’d met him back when she joined the department. Merlin, that felt like a lifetime away, didn’t it? She could hardly remember that time...and yet...it was all still there...some moments more striking and vivid than others. Jake, here, knew offices weren’t her style and his chances of finding her there when she didn’t need to be was pretty up in the air.

Today had been one full of meetings, but knowing he’d wanted a word, Lex was sure to schedule them around him. In fact, seconds after his knock, the door swung open and a group of men in suits made their way from her office.

It was impressive timing, they’d just done wrapping up.

Through the open door, she gestured him in while she straightened everything into something of a neat pile.

The men barely spare him a glance before disappearing down the corridor.

Oh, Merlin. That was a lot of suits. A lot of people, too. A lot of people who were wearing suits, if you wanted to be technical about it. Jake sidestepped out of the way for the suit brigade to leave unimpeded, before poking his head around the doorframe.

At Lex's gesture, he did indeed step inside the office, closing the door behind him. "Afternoon," he said, gaze wandering briefly to the chocolate fountain. Not that he was at all tempted by it; he had never grown out of his bizarre sugar intolerance-sensitivity-thing and nobody needed to see what happened when he attempted to defy it. "Busy day, I take it?" Small talk, the absolute worst. "Hopefully this won't take up much of your time."

"You've got no idea." Lex grimaced, allowing her head to sink to her desk, resting atop folded arms. "Men are idiots. No offense, of course." No. She actually liked Jake. He made sense and wasn't a nuisance. He didn't try to assert some sort of male "dominance" and didn't have a tremendous ego that needed constant babysitting. Jake was good people.

Lex took a breath, just enough to properly clear her head before lifting it again to take a proper look at him. "Sit wherever you want. It's all the same to me." There were enough chairs and a comfy couch. He could make himself sorta at home for as long as this took...but...this wouldn't take long...yeah? Her head hurt.

The former Head Auror clasped her hands, resting them on the desk before her. "So. What were you hoping to go over?"

New case info? Insubordinates? Pay raise?

"None taken," Jake replied with a good-natured grin. "I happen to agree." Whether or not he was including himself in that wasn't totally clear, but he probably was. ~~He absolutely was.~~

Take a seat, any seat. Jake didn't really let himself be held back by formality here. Some might have gone for a regular chair in front of the desk, but Alexa had said to sit anywhere, and so anywhere was where he would sit. The couch, specifically. It looked very comfortable and-... it was very comfortable. He rested his forearms atop his legs and clasped his own hands, mirroring Lex's gesture without quite realising.

"I have a request," he began. "To move positions. Not a promotion, more of a... lateral move. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to take on a position as an Auror. I did all the training... oh, about twenty years ago now." Merlin. Twenty years. Was he really old enough for that to be true? That couldn't be... Actually, wait, there was also the twenty-three-year-old son situation to factor in, so maybe it was about right. But still. "I wasn't in the YATI programme or anything, I did it all externally before I came to the ministry." Missed his chance by two years, thanks to his own indecision. Not altogether surprising.

Interesting. Lex nodded along as he made his case, silently summoning his file from the cabinet. A move to Auror? Well they could certainly use more of those. The world could never be "too safe" and Jake had always been the reliable sort. In the brief silence that fell between them, Alexa took the time to skim the folder. It was all there, documented. Dated but documented all the same.

"Twenty years is a long time to be away from the YATI training. There's been a few changes made to the program since then." She admitted. Shutting the file once she'd seen enough.

"But you've obviously got some experience." Some because of his current division. He hadn't exactly been Auroring for the last stretch of time and everyone could admit the roles had their differences. "I also don't believe you'd find it too difficult to catch up...but." Because there had to be a but here. Surely even he was expecting the "but". "I'd like you to have a few refresher courses. Not three whole years, that would be a waste of your time and the Department's. It's not necessary. Six months, unless you think you need the year. Get yourself re-caught up, we'll have you evaluated and talk about the move then."

If he was up for that, they could work out the smaller details.

Alexa was talking sense, to be honest, and Jake had to admit that as soon as the words 'twenty years ago' had been said, it struck him how much might have changed in that time, either in the training process or in his own abilities. Not that he doubted his abilities, he was just aware that in his current job, he didn't put all his training to use; he was sure to be a little rusty in certain areas.

Jake listened to what Alexa had to say on the matter, and all in all was quite happy with what he heard. He had also fully been expecting the 'but'.

"I'm perfectly happy with that," he replied, with a nod and a smile. With any luck, any thing he was out of practice with would come back to him quickly, and as for the newer material, Jake hoped he was still as good at picking up information as he was back in the day. "I think six months should be enough."

Eloise Fairfield could have been in Spain already having a real summer. But she also wanted to do this thing and was more shocked than not she got accepted here in MLE above all else. The red-head had read her letter and the do's and dont's though it was mostly dont's like don't nap in corners on her lunch and yada yada yada something about babysitting. She had followed everything with the receptionist.

Now she was in the office and ok she had to admit the chocolate fountain was pretty cool.

All that being said. She was ready to work with her hair up in a ponytail and wearing casual enough clothes because Cambridge did say she was expected to being doing real work and all.

The almost sixth year was going to try and have some fun here regardless of how uptight Alexa Cambridge made it sound in the letter
