Default How do you pronounce Wizarding World terms?

For those of us who have read the books before seeing the films, we often go in with an idea of how certain locations, names, spells, etc. are pronounced. We experience one of two things: we either feel proud when the films use the same pronunciation as us or we shout at the screen in front of us for not pronouncing 'Lestrange' the way we do. Maybe the former is a bit of an exaggeration, but I think we all can come to the conclusion that some aspects of the Potter universe can be pronounced in multiple ways.

Why do we pronounce certain words the way we do? Is it because of where we live? How we look at the word? Did the audio books or films influence how you pronounce certain words in the series? Here are is a list of Harry Potter words that I hear pronounced differently all the time:
  • Accio - Ak-see-oh, As-ee-oh, or Ak-ee-oh
  • Crucio - Cru-shay-oh or Cru-see-oh
  • Bezoar - Bee-zor or Beh-zhwah
  • Elphias - Elf-ee-as or Elf-ee-us
  • Grindelwald - Grindel-wald or Grindel-vald
  • Lestrange - Le-strange or Le-strawnge
  • Lucius - Loo-see-us or Loo-shas
  • Knut - Nut, Ka-nut, or Ka-noot
  • Merope - Mee-rope or Meh-ro-pee
  • Remus - Ray-mus or Ree-mus
  • Rubeus - Roo-bee-us or Roo-bay-us
  • Seamus - Shay-mus or See-mus
  • Scrimgeour - Scrim-jor or Scrim-jee-or
  • Voldemort - Vole-duh-mor or Vole-de-mort
How do you pronounce things in the series? And what are the 'right' ways?

Haha, I don't think there are any truly right ways to pronounce any of the words. Whatever you like best is right in your book.

Here's how I pronounce some words...

Accio - ace-ee-oh
Bezoar - bee-ZORE
Scrimgeour - SCRIM-zhure

I pronounce these words these ways-

Accio- Assio
Bezoar- Be-oh-zore
Scrimgeour-Skrim-igor

The last two are quite messed up, but I can't push the wrong pronunciations out of my head!

I say Akkio (Accio), Be-zo-er for bezoar, and skrim-edge-or for Scrimgeour, which I know is completely wrong, but it's the way I've always said it and I can't get myself to stop saying it that way!

Thomas Marvolo Riddle | | Lord Voldemort is a ham

I cannot possibly think of all the things I must pronounce differently but I'll go with the ones I remember XD

After I watched the movies or listened to the audio books, I changed my pronunciation to fit those XD I only really change the way I say it if the new way fits the spelling of it, you know?

Accio - Before the movies, I always said 'ay-sio'. I think because I was really young and had just been taught that 'c' sometimes sounds like 's'. XD But yeah... now it's 'ack-io'

Bezoar - before the movies it was always 'bee-zore' as well... a little but like 'bee-sore' hhaha. But now it's 'be-zore'. You know. Short e.

Hermione - bit of a Viktor Krum here xD Before the AUDIO BOOKS, I'd say 'Her-me-own-nee'. I kid you not. Then when I heard Stephen Fry say it differently I went to that XD

Scrimgeour - despite the movies and stuff, I stick with my original way of reading it because I still think it fits the spelling properly: 'scrim-jeorr'.

Thestral - this one... THIS ONE. I read it wrong for years and would say 'thress-all' because I just always read it as Threstal. This one is SO HARD to get out of the habit of doing. Seriously. But I'm trying to change mah ways xD

All in all, although I personally try to change my pronunciations, I think that as long you are getting the story and enjoying it or liking it, it doesn't really matter how you see or say it when you read it :3

Here's how I pronounce them:

Accio: Assio
Bezoar: Bee-saw
Scrimgeour - Scrim-jaw

It's how I've always said them and how I probably always will. Its hard to change how you say things when you're used to say it one way.

♥Live Well, Love Much, Laugh Often♥

Maybe because of my language, I really pronounced all those things completely different.. I mean, I have this Indian accent, which is so different from the British one used in the films. And I really realized this when I saw the films.

This is what i pronounced before, now I've improved

Accio: Assio
Yes, I pronounce it with a S, even now

Bezoar: Bay-zo-are
I just followed the spelling! But now I'm beginning to say Be-zor.

Scrimgeour-Skrim-gor
That was what I pronounced before.. now I pronounce it as Skrim-jeur

Thestral: Thres-tral
I don't know why, but I always put a R at start. I know its Thes-tral, but I still can't get Thres-tral out of my head! Talk about first impressions!

Hermione: Her-mi-yo-nee
Now I said it very wrong at first, and I kinda actually googled it one So now, i say it as Her-my-nee

Ron: Raw-n
I know this ones easy, but i realised my mistake when I saw the films. I like how Hermione calls him, kind of like Ro-n

I listened to all the audio books read by Jim Dale, so that's the way I'm use to hearing things pronounced.

I mean, I purposely pronounced Hermione's name wrong around my friend for like four months because it annoyed her so much.

Hermione- Herman-ee

She did not approve. I personally loved it. The joke in a Very Potter Musical where they keep pronouncing Hermione's name wrong made me die laughing because it was reminiscent of what I used to do.

Here's a new one!

Growing up, my family read it as "BO-beh-tawn" not "Bo-BAT-un"

I hate how they pronounce it in the movie
