Grand Ballroom

https://i.postimg.cc/4N8hL0Cd/ballroom-banner3.jpg

This is where a large bulk of the school's events are held. This is the widest room in the entire castle, fitted on three sides with wall windows and silk curtains. On an average day, the room is bare save for the grand piano that sits in the centre. This is moved off to the corner during special occasions. The floors are tiled and have anti slipping charms to prevent accidents on its exceptionally clean surface.

Dance lessons are held here periodically, regardless of upcoming events. This is another quiet space within the school, usually empty and usually undisturbed. Should you need a moment alone or a bit more silence for your concentration with the school now being twice its usual capacity, it might not be such a bad idea.

Eating in this room, outside of special occasions, is strictly prohibited. Dueling, fighting or any other form of behaviour that can result in destruction or chaos is also strictly prohibited.

~ Dance practice ~

Call him crazy but he was actually looking forward to this.

It was a low stress afternoon with the students, music, dancing. Sure, there would be some missteps, and sure some frustration if the dances proved to be particularly difficult but at the same time...it wasn't a mass detention. It wasn't a meeting with a screaming Headmistress and as far as he knew, no one was in trouble.

Did anyone know how long it'd been since he'd been able to just enjoy his students?????

So yeah, Malachi was fine being here. He was fine agreeing with the Headmistress's request and he waited, dressed for the occasion in comfortable clothing with his hands loosely slung in his pockets.

The room was set up and ready for the occasion. The floor itself was clear and waiting for the students to begin dancing. The piano was on standby to play and there were costumes for everyone to dress up and get into the ball mood.

All that was missing now was the students.

Despite everything going on with Elisa, she had enough to look forward to. The Valentine's Ball. Elegant dressing, the sights, being dolled up and dancing, she loved that. So when she saw the notice up regarding dance lesson practices, she knew right then and there she'd be attending.

Now, here she was. "Hello, Headmaster." said Elisa, politely. She stood by, taking in the sight of the room, thinking over how everything will take place and more importantly which costume she'll be wanting to wear.

Bernie hadn't even WANTED to attend this STUPID ball and all the STUPID dancing and formal rules and STUFF that the FRENCH PEOPLE wanted.... but her parents, after her suspension, had LECTURED HER TO DEATH about returning to school and 'being good' and 'following rules' and 'participating in a normal way.'

...So.

Here she was. The first year DIDN'T skip into the ballroom, she walked NORMALLY, and she had a bit of French FROWN on her face, and she was dressed very TIDILY in her uniform, except her hair, which was windblown as usual. She thought about dodging Professor Headman Trent when she saw him, but there were only TWO PEOPLE in the room so far so she felt like she HAD to say something.

"Sir," Bernie greeted the man with a VERY SERIOUS curtsy, and then she spun around and made her way to stand by a window and try to blend into the wall. OOh, a curtain... maybe she could hide behind that.

Claudine was still undecided if she wanted to attend the upcoming Ball. For one thing, she intended on asking no one to go with her. If she did attend, she would be taking herself as her date; she would be there for the memories that would make precious sketches. Her sketchpad labelled 'First Year of Hogwarts (at Beauxbatons)' was quickly being filled with memory sketches. Anyway, Claudine was not entirely sure what she was doing here. Dancing was not her thing.

Did she want to publicly embarrass herself? Of course not.

Maybe she'll just stand and watch everyone else.

"Hello, Headmaster.'' Claudine fixed him one of her unsmiling gazes then looked around. An older Ravenclaw... and Bernie. She was pretty pleased to have the Gryffindor back but while Bernie had been suspended, she found that she had this growing guilt about her: if she had not set the roses on fire, then Bernie never would have been suspended. Claudine supposed she ought to express that feeling but she didn't know how to. Feelings weren't her thing either; they were normally faked when needed- much like the apology to the HeadCrazyMistress.

"Er. Hi, Bernie.'' Did the Lioness even want to talk to her? Claudine had sort of avoided Bernie since she came back save for the occasional 'hello'. "Er, do you reckon Trent's the one who's going to teach us how to dance? Does he even know how to?'' These were just small talk questions.

With her mother owning a dance studio, Chloe didn't really need lessons for dancing, but when the notice came up she decided that it might be fun to practice and see who else showed up for the lessons. Chloe still wasn't sure she was excited or not about this ball, of course, she was, but Felix hadn't officially asked her so maybe he wasn't going to and if he didn't, would she just go to go?

Those thoughts were going through her head as she headed into the ballroom and smiled as she saw Elisa, 'Hi" with a little wave she looked to the headmaster and the others that were there before her. Though she had danced before many different styles, Chloe still headed to the back so that she could practice without many eyes on her.

lazykitty 10-13-2019 03:43 PM

When she'd first heard about the ball, Daila had been excited. Now, she wasn't so sure. It wasn't the dancing that threw her. No, it was the Beauxbatons Headmistress' attitude to anyone from Hogwarts. It just put a whole lot of unneeded pressure on them, knowing she was just waiting for them to screw up. And she would probably be scrutinizing their moves at the ball, looking for even the tiniest thing wrong.

Not that Dalia necessarily had anything to worry about on that front. She wasn't a pro by any means, but she had been to a class here and there. So, she arrived in the ballroom wearing shorts and a t-shirt (no wardrobe malfunctions for her, thanks) and shoes appropriate for ballroom dancing. "Hello," she greeted the room at large cheerfully.

Felixir 10-14-2019 12:24 AM

Kaiser had so far been unsure of whether he even wanted to go to some fancy ball, especially if it was going to be anything remotely like what the rest of Beauxbatons had to offer, and he assumed it definitely was. That wasn't to say it had been in the forefront - or even the middle area for medium importance stuff - of his mind; he'd thought of the event maybe three times since it had been announced (and not a single one of those times had involved potential dates). It was all very low-priority stuff.

The notice about ballroom dancing lessons had been almost enough to make his mind up on the subject (a firm no, to be clear) especially as he had never danced in his life, and was highly likely to end up looking like an idiot. Even so, Kaiser still had no idea if he'd want to attend the ball when the time came, and the 'not exactly optional' part of the notice was what prompted him to show up today. If he managed to find some appropriate attire and decided to go to the ball, it was apparently important that he'd have come to these... lessons.

So... here he was. Right here. Tired eyes, messy hair. Jeans, hooded sweatshirt, boots. Not exactly ballroom dancing wear, but a representation of the only outfits he owned. "Hello," Kaiser greeted the Headmaster in a why-would-you-make-us-do-this-you-monster kind of voice, then made a beeline for a section of wall between two floor to ceiling windows. He leaned his back against it, folded his arms across his chest, and waited.

Full disclosure: if Desmarais showed up and started screeching like a newborn banshee because someone left a smudged fingerprint on one of the door handles or something equally absurd, he was out of here.

SneakySeverusSnape 10-14-2019 12:59 AM

Analiese's thin figure slipped through the large doors of the ballroom. She had been quite wary of attending the fancy ball everyone had been talking about lately. She didn't want to make a fool of herself. And she had no idea who she was going to go with. Could she just go by herself or something? Or not even go at all? The ball had been quite a low-priority thing in her mind. She might have thought about it a few times. And not once had she thought about what she was going to wear. That was normally the first thing she thought about. She didn't think about it in any full detail over the last few weeks.

She was quite distanced from everyone else as she stood. Not too far that it looked unnatural. Just... farther than normal. She stood there in a yellow and white striped t-shirt that was loosely tucked into her black jeans, with yellow sneakers and her hair tied in high ponytail with a yellow ribbon. She was very yellow today. Don't ask why. These weren't professional ballroom wear, but they would do. 'Honestly, imagine if someone turned up to the ball wearing this', she thought.

Mathys de Nostredame 10-14-2019 01:15 AM

Classically trained in various forms of the waltz (though he did prefer the French Valse Boston variation), it was a given that Mathys would be present for today's lesson. Though the more barbaric observations of the Hogwarts faculty begged consideration as to whether or not the Hogwarts headmaster truly possessed the sophistication and grace worthy of teaching such fluid movements to wizarding youth. So it was with skepticism in his stride that he entered the grand ballroom in the appropriate dance attire.

White always helped elongate his already long legs.

Though he could not say the same for the rest of those present. Seemed as though the stench of bad taste was not exclusive to their professors.

Greeting with his standard polite bow, one arm tucked behind his back, he once again remained lurking towards the back and diligently waited for instruction from the Hogwarts headmaster.

DANCE LESSONS?!

No. No no no.

Lucas didn’t want to be here. They were having DANCE lessons! He couldn’t dance! And even if he tried, he knew that he would only end up embarrassing himself in front of everyone. So why was he here? Because embarrassing himself during a lesson was better than embarrassing himself during the actual ball.

Which he didn’t want to go to but that was a problem for another day.

There was a lot of grumbling and contemplating and wondering what would happen if he didn’t turn up to either event. But eventually, the fourth year wandered into the ballroom, wearing trousers and a t-shirt. Nothing fancy. Not unlike the ballroom which, as he stood and stared around, was very fancy. Maybe a little too-

..........

.................

Oh.

Oh? Merlin??

Lucas immediately turned red. Sure, he’d seen Nostredame around the castle many times and was used to his presence by now but...... uh??? Hello?! He wasn’t used to THIS. Did no one else see what the man was WEARING?! He was trying not to stare but...... well. It was only making it even more difficult for the boy to concentrate on anything other than the chest region and the loud sound of his wild heartbeat.

Was it suddenly very hot in here? What happened to all the air??

He didn’t know how long he had been standing there, opening and closing his mouth, but it was long enough. Trying and failing to look innocent, the fifteen year old wandered off to an empty spot somewhere. He didn’t really care where. He wasn’t paying attention to any of that or who he might be standing near and if he knew them or not. He was just..... trying to look innocent. And normal. Everything was completely normal.

Which could start with a greeting. "Hello, Headmaster." Pause. "Professor." This was going to be a long lesson, wasn’t it?

Could he leave?

ArianaBlack 10-14-2019 02:30 AM

You would certainly never guess it by just looking at him, but Finneas Schmoe was a horrendous dancer. Two left feet. Ho ho ho. AnYwAy. He wasn't here to dance. He was here to chaperone! And as such, his #ootd was far more subtle than his workout attired had been. He was wearing the usual sweater vest, bowtie situation. Pocket protector, ALWAYS.

The Muggle Studies Professor bumbled his way inside, giving an awkward smile 'n wave to all of his students. "Headmaster," bobbed his head up and down.

"Monsieur Nostredame." Showoff.

He stuff his hands into his pockets, edging towards the side of the ballroom.

Avalon couldn't deny that she had extremely mixed emotions about the upcoming ball. While she was a competent dancer and enjoyed any excuse to get dressed up, she was fretting big time over who she would go with. Second years weren't expected to go with dates yet, right? When she had first heard of the festive occasion, she had planned on going solo, perhaps with a few of her second year friends. But then she heard of some other girls her age who were planning on going with boys!

Nevertheless, she was excited for the dancing lesson. Avalon had taken dance classes as a child, and she was looking forward to practicing her steps again before the ball. She had considered bringing her old pair of dance slippers, but she figured that might be a little much...so she settled for a comfy pair of sneakers instead. She took up a spot next to a fellow Ravenclaw, Analiese. "Hey Analiese! Channeling your inner Hufflepuff today?" Avalon asked with a laugh, noticing the yellow accents her friend was wearing.

sweetpinkpixie 10-14-2019 07:59 AM

He couldn't believe he was here. Only he could.

No attendance, no dance...and then all that effort he had put into the puzzle and properly asking Missa would have been wasted - and Eiji absolutely despised waste. So, here he was, in instant regret and looking brooding off to the side and just wishing that they could get started so they could end.

It all almost had him missing S.O.R.E exercises. Almost. But at least with those it was not expected that they wear penguin suits and tame their hair and otherwise look...fancy.

Eiji also did not want people knowing that he knew how to perform, though it was something that was knowledge privy to a few and he would rather like to keep it that way. Performance calligraphy was an entirely different stroke from...whatever this was going to be. And judging from the looks of the Beauxbatons professor...it was everything he wanted no association with.

And it would just be his luck that Professor S'more edged himself towards the Slytherin's side of the ballroom.

Just. His. Luck.

He drew the line at partnering with the professor, just for the record.

DaniDiNardo 10-14-2019 08:07 AM

Ah and here came the students!

"Potter." He greeted the first with an amicable smile. Yes, the man was in quite the good mood and was hoping that mood would remain throughout. Dancing was something he enjoyed on the odd occasion, mostly with his wife. They were both theatre nuts and enjoyed a good performance.

The man's gaze sunk to the First Year Gryffindor and her stiff curtsy. "Grantham." He replied carefully. Not much of a bounce in her step these days. He hadn't expected the suspension to make her happy--hardly, it was discipline and meant to be taken seriously--but he hoped she wouldn't let it become the defining characteristic in her entire school career. Hopefully her wand was back to working standard. He'd taken it, as promised, to get repaired for her mostly because a student with a faulty wand was a danger to everyone else but also because of that kicked cruppy look she'd given him that evening in the Inquisitorial Hall.

"Blaze. McCarthy." Rather than dwell on the sullen First Year, he focused on the pair to enter next--one seemingly always sullen but you got the idea.

"Ojeda. Kaiser." Yeeeaaahhh....he caught the tone the boy carried and returned it with an almost apologetic smile. His hands really were tied but this would be FUN. Weren't they excited??? No, so far none of them looked excited. Shame that.

The Headmaster nodded to first, De Nostredame then Schmoe when they made their appearances. Good, the cavalry had arrived. They'd be able to get this show on the road in short order. "Dakest, try not to look so flustered. We haven't even begun." Though there was some small comfort in knowing the boy probably ALWAYS looked this way and it wasn't just the sight of the man's lessons. It was the little things.

"Attention, attention." He clapped, calling everyone to order. "We're going to be starting in a bit. First, I'd like everyone to enter either set of changing rooms set up over there in either corner of the room." He paused to gesture to the curtains currently set up. Girls and Boys on either side. They'd dressed comfortably, but he needed them dressed for the ball. "Once you've found something you like, slip it on then come sign the register here with your name, year and house." Believe it or not, he'd been serious about attendance being a must here. Names would be checked before anyone was allowed into the ball. They should tell their friends. Should anyone be absent now, they still had a chance if they showed up to the other practices.

"Get that done, then we'll begin with a few light stretches."

When the notice had went up Cole had thought he had read wrong, so he had reread it again. They we’re required to attend a dance lesson if they had any wish to attend the upcoming Valentines ball. Cole had debated just sitting the dance lesson and ball out since he wasn’t sure who to go with or even if it’d be fun. He almost forgot that he wasn’t exactly keen on flaunting his dance moves in front of all his peers since there was the high risk of messing it all up.

After talking over with his dorm mates though Cole had decided to at least go down to the dance lesson and see how things went since his mates we’re. He could always fake sickness if he wanted to get out of there fast later. Stepping into the Grand ballroom just in time for head man Trent’s instructions, Cole noted with a quick glance around that he at least weren’t alone. Heading to the boys changing room he quickly slipped on the clothes and shoes required. He tried his best not cringe or make a flustered face as he headed out of the changing room and over to sign the register. Registration done Cole headed over to stand to the side to start stretching, wondering for the hundredth time who he was going to ask to the ball if he didn’t ask one of his cousins.

Carys was of two minds when it came to this ball idea. On the one hand, she really wanted to help with the decorations and a part of her wanted to actually go. But on the other hand, she was feeling even more like she was invisible. The nearly awkward conversation with her sister over Christmas hadn’t even helped much, considering Carsyn at least had gotten asked to the ball. Carys was still all by herself, and it was discouraging her from being entirely excited over the proceedings.

Nor did it help that she kept flashing back to how scared she’d been when they had all had to deal with Scrimgeour and the hoops he’d made them jump through only to still be against them. She felt overwhelmingly like they were dealing with the same when it came to the Beauxbatons headmistress, and to an extent, the Beauxbatons professors. One of which was in the ballroom, as she’d entered and quietly given the headmaster and the professors present a smile in greeting, flushing the slightest bit as she’d realized her eyes had kept going to the CoMC professor’s open shirt. Hopefully nobody noticed as she’d made her way over to the changing rooms.

At least she felt like she could gather herself in there, even if she had tried to dress appropriately already. She still changed anyhow, and then made her way over to the register to sign in before heading to an open area to stretch.

Patrick didn't think he needed to have a lesson on how to dance. Yet, here he was. He had arrived in his comfy clothes, the attire he figured he should wear to learn how to dance to appease the Beaux headmistress. His grey sweatpants hung off his hips and his long sleeve shirt had the sleeves pushed up. He looked around nodding at the few people he saw in the room he recognized. He noticed a few of their professors milling about he was more impressed to see their headmaster in comfy clothes.

Feeling obligated he gave a wave, "Hello Headmaster" he still wasn't sure if he should call the headmaster headmaster or just Professor Trent. He just let it go waving at their muggle studies professor. He noticed Chloe, Eiji, and Kaiser. He wondered if they all felt like this was a bit of over kill. Scanning the room, rocking back on his heels, and hands shoved deep in his sweatpants pocket he tried to not look agitated.

Simmer man, simmer He really needed to play it cool. He heard the instructions about writing down their name. He wrote his name, year, and house down. He wanted to be able to attend the ball, or at least have the option. He glanced around, wait they were changing? why his sweats would be good enough right? He waited to see what other people were going to change into before he jumped into the changing room.

TakemetotheBurrow 10-14-2019 11:27 PM

Cecelia LOVED to dance. Not exactly the kind of dancing she figured the headmaster WANTED them to do at a fancy ball, but the girl had rhythm all the same. She DID know SOMETHING about waltzing, too. Grandpa Bishop was light on his feet and she'd had MANY a dance parties with him RIGHT in the living room, listening to old time-y music and laughing as she stood on his feet as they moved about the room. It was for THIS reason she was smiling as she waved at the headmaster AND the care of magical creatures professor in greeting. Hi, hello, she was HERE!

Oh, and she needed a dress, apparently.

The first year marched on back to the changing room, picking out a pretty purple dress that was a BIT poofy and looked like it would be PERFECT for twirling. When she was all changed, she headed right back out to register herself.

It was a relief to be looking somewhere else other than at Bernie. Guilt was a powerful emotion that was not helping Claudine to feel any better. A few Professors were arriving, including Schmoe. Surprisingly, as she attended more of his lessons and learnt more about his weird behaviour, her opinion on him softened considerably. In a way, he was like her: they both had quirks that could be off putting to some. The Snakette actually sent a small smile in his direction.

What now?

They had to go find outfits? Claudine looked at Bernie but she wasn’t really seeing her. Why? Because the Snakette was considering fleeing. Was this really worth it in the end? Getting into dance clothes? Embarrassing herself with dance moves that she was certain would be non existent for her? Possibly the only person who could change her mind was standing right beside her.

But at that exact moment, Claudine’s gaze was focused on the entrance/exit door.

Gasp! Someone had found her hiding spot by the curtains. It was because Kaiser came over here, and he was tall. And old. And noticeable.

"Erm, hi Claudine," Bernie awkwardly greeted her friend back. She didn't know if her buddy would still be mad at her or not because of the whole suspension thing. Maybe she didn't want to associate with Bernie A N Y M O R E because she thought she was trouble. Maybe she....

Oh, huh, guess that was a good question. Bernie's eyes darted around the room, suspiciously taking in who else was here, before landing back on Claudine. "Maybe Trent's going to dance with Notredame for us, and then..." er, how did Schmoe fit into this? "Schmoe's the conductor." Ya know, he'd wave his wand and make the music come out? He was the nerdiest of the three MEN that were here, so he was clearly the NON-DANCER of the pack.

She straightened up then as the Headmaster made an announcement to go and c h a n g e. UGH. YUCK.

Hold on, Kaiser absolutely had not signed up for this 'changing' business. Well, he'd actually not signed up for anything at all, but that went double for this. At first, he didn't move from his spot at the wall, but did eventually push away and sidle over to the changing rooms.

After rooting around for something of a decent size to wear, Kaiser pulled the fancier-than-he'd-ever-owned clothes on over the ones he was already wearing. Might get a bit hot, sure, but he'd be fine. No-one need concern themselves.

Dressed and ready, Kaiser left the changing area and went to add his name to the register.

Very briefly, he considered also adding the names of any friends he hadn't yet seen arrive, so they'd be covered too, but ultimately decided that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to try to do so in full view of several professors. Instead he went back to his previous place, leaning up against the wall.

....Once you've found something you like...

Let it be known that one James Eiji Rasting was very proficient at following directions. He never truly actively sought to 'stick it to the man' or whatever other phrasing his peers would call it. Doing so often took far more energy than just doing what you were told in the first place, but when the headmaster presenting instructions in that light, well, it was easy to follow instructions on the Slytherin's own terms.

Couldn't participate if he couldn't find something he liked, right?

Sauntering into the changing room after signing in, Eiji put on the appearance of scrutinizing the available options. Seeing as he hated dress robes in general, it was easy to write them all off as things which he 'did not like'. Therefore, the fifth year moved into a corner of the changing room and simply sat down.

Samia 10-15-2019 07:01 AM

Despite being REALLY excited about this, Missa found her social life suddenly being so happening very unfair - obviously because OWLs were due so soon. How was she supposed to balance the stress of exams and the excitement of a magical night all at the same time???

It was highly unfair.

But she was trying to keep up, and she was here. Late, ofcourse - because of a Potions essay but she was here. Just in time for headmaster's instructions too. Her eyes wandered around the room as he spoke, and she couldn't help but go a bit wide eyed at Nostredame's attire - BECAUSE WHAT EVEN. These beaux people would out do themselves during the ball too, wouldn't they? Certainly if they are taking dance practices so seriously too.

Somehow tearing away her eyes from the man, and nodding at the headmaster's instructions, the brunette made her way to the changing room - noticing only then one Eiji Rasting PARTICIPATING too. Surely her eyes were deceiving her. But if he could ask her to the ball in such a romantic way - he could do anything.

Grinning to herself, she went through the dresses and picked one peach coloured one - it was too loose on her body but it would do for now. Tying up her hair in a bun next, she made her way to the register and signed her name in, all the while LOOKING OUT for Eiji - very very curious to see him in dress robes. But he was nowhere to be seen. Hmm.

Did he find himself a way out?

Hmm.

Tiny disappointed, she found herself standing by a first year (Cecelia) - and her rather puffy dress. Chuckling to herself, she gave the young girl a small grin, "that dress looks quite perfect on you, y'know"

She was very glad Calyx taught her how to dance so she wasn’t entirely clueless ( thankfully! ) and the chances of her embarrassing herself was minimum.

She signed her name in the register before heading over to the changing rooms. She browsed through the available dresses before picking out a pretty yellow coloured one with long sleeves. The girl stared at herself in the mirror, the smallest hint of a smile on her lips. She looked.. nice. She twirled once ( ahem ) before heading back to the ballroom, taking her place by the wall again.
