Default The Spiraling Staircase

When travelling from floor to floor within the castle, this is the way to do it. The spiral staircase can get you to each floor and their classrooms as well as common rooms. Standing at the base and taking a glance upward, you can already see that you've got a long way to go, particularly if the towers are your destination.

Pay attention while you go, they have a tendency to begin flowing upward or downward without prior warning on occasion. While this could be beneficial, it can sometimes be a nuisance when your desire is the opposite direction. Should that happen, you can attempt to go against the grain as the stairs will not move too quickly or you can get off and try one of the smaller connecting staircases around the castle.

Should I just close off this corridor on me map? I've been working on it ALL year," which wasn't that long, but was long enough. And yes, she DID use this on a regular basis. "Oh uh huh, yeah, I found the Muggle Studies room this way." And the so-called Muggle Studies' professor's office as well. Maybe she should bring up his "qualifications" with the Professormaster? Hmm....

She looked inquisitively at where he was pointing next.... to his office? "Noooooo," Bernie gasped, "that IS your office! I promise! Come on, I'll show you!" She tugged on his sleeve and then headed down the corridor, hurrying in her eagerness to show off to the Headprofessor.
Oh, thank Meeeeeerlin.

When in doubt, count on the eagerness of First Years. Especially those of the Gryffindor variety. Malachi almost sighed in relief when the kid began tugging him along but of course, he didn't. Had to maintain the cover until he got to his office, then he would take on the role of the overly impressed Headmaster, lay on a few more compliments. Gryffindors ate that sort of thing up. He would know.

"Huh?" The corridor? Oh right, she was mapping. "Yeah, yeah, dead end once you get to the bottom of it. Fancied taking myself a stroll," as opposed to being lost which he clearly was not, "ended up right against a solid block of wall. Spells aren't revealing anything hidden there. Just a wall." See? He wasn't the only one to benefit from this encounter.

She was welcome.

"You know, I bet your fellow schoolmates could really benefit from that map of yours. Ever heard of the duplication charm?"

The Professormaster was doing a good job of pretending to be clueless! This was the sort of act teachers liked to play on their students, though, so the students would answer their questions. Muggle teachers did it all the time! Plus, now Bernie had led them to the spial staircase, which was just plain FUN to ride. She stopped just at the foot of it and looked back at him.

"Did you used to have a fancy staircase like this at Hogwarts?" Bernie asked the Headmasterman. She had read about one like this that was PASSWORD PROTECTED for the Headoffice, but wondered if it was still there, since she'd never yet been to Hogwarts. "Do you think we'll get to go there next year?" Just cuious, y'know, since he probably knew better than anyone what was going on at his school.

Oh yes, he was just checking the corridor to see what was hidden there. Bernie nodded seriously and took the map back from him, quickly making a mark on it with her pen for later fixing. She glanced back up at him and stepped onto the staircase. "Um, does the duplication charm... copy things?" If so, that would be DEAD USEFUL for homework making more candy. "Can it copy food?"

She wasn't sure she was interested in distributing her map yet. It wasn't even done!

"Well." The Headmaster stepped onto the staircase nodding for her to do the same just as it began flowing upward. They were in luck. He'd have been more than willing to wait until it went stationary again if it had started flowing in the other direction but who had the time? "I wouldn't say there was anything particularly fancy back at Hogwarts." There were many words that could be used to describe the castle. As it happened...the one she'd suggested....was not. "But we did have a set of staircases. They moved from platform to platform, sometimes changing floors as they had a mind to. Easy enough to end up in the wrong corridor if you're not paying attention."

It was odd. Of all the things he thought he'd miss, the staircases hadn't crossed his mind until it came forth in this conversation.

"I'm sure we'll get the castle back. The Ministry's working their hardest. In fact, I'm meant to be heading out there next week to check on the progress. We'll be out of here in no time, I bet." He lied. As much as he wanted to believe they'd be back home by Christmas...the outlook hadn't been great when he'd last checked in--but there was no need for HER to know that.

Kids needed hope. The more they hoped was the easier it was for him to lie to himself.

"It does copy things, yes. Food too....I suppose. But I wouldn't get too dependent on it. The things you duplicate begin to break down after awhile and essentially become useless and of no value. They rot or otherwise become tarnished. Your skill level determines how long you've got, but everything breaks away eventually."

Hogwarts wasn't fancy?! But it was a CASTLE! One with, like, seven floors, or so she'd read! "Wow, ~m o v i n g s t a i r c a s e s,~" Bernie breathed in wonder. That was not what she was thinking, but it still sounded SO COOL! "Is there a way to make stuff move on paper? Is there a spell to that? Because I'll have to put those on my Hogwarts map, when we get to go to school there." Because obviously, when she'd get to Hogwarts, she'd have to make another MAP! Map making was fun, and definitely not for nerds.

She nodded seriously at the discussion about the Ministry, and the Professormaster going in... uh oh, he'd better be careful. If he got lost just wandering around Beauxbatons, he'd DEFINITELY get lost in the fog around Hogwarts! "Did they figure out what was causing the mist, sir?" She was SO EXCITED by the prospect of getting to go to the RIGHT school that she hopped up a few steps just like a bunny. "I bet the French Headmistress will be so happy to see us ~ g o ~!" Bernie was practically singing that line, and hopped down a step, then back up one, then twirled around to see the Headmaster. "So like, if YOU duplicated MY map, to have a copy for YOURSELF, it would last a LOT LONGER than if I duplicated it?"

Well, she might consider that. She did like this Headprofessor.

Had the man really been so used to Hogwarts? He might not have thought so until he caught the look of wander in the First Year's eyes over the moving staircases of all things. On an average day, they were just stairs. Sometimes they changed mid descent and gave him extra walking. It was oddly refreshing. "If you like those, you'll love the butterfly garden. It also moves about the grounds of its own accord. Plenty of things for you to get lost in at Hogwarts." Once they got there. Merlin, that couldn't come soon enough.

"There's spells to create moving pictures. I don't doubt you'll learn it at some point. Professor Fuller-Thompson might be willing to give you an early preview if you can't wait." Malachi wasn't aware of the Charms curriculum. He didn't know when they'd begin learning what.

He watched her hopping along the stairs, reminded of when she'd all but dropped a trail of sugar across his classroom floor with her entrance. "I've been told it was an abnormal manifestation of boggarts. You'll be learning about those soon enough. Nothing officially out to the public yet. The hardest part will be the clean up." Actually getting rid of a horde that big. It was a waiting game while Creatures worked and he hated that sort.

The Headmaster did his best to prevent the smirk of amusement. "Headmistress Desmarais will surely miss the added company but yes, you're right. If I duplicated your map, it would last longer." He didn't even have to walk her into that one. Bless the First Years.

A butterfly garden that moved all around outside! Bernie gasped at the thought of it. Maybe it would follow her? And she could catch butterflies in a net?! Yes, she WOULD love that. "That sounds AWESOME," the first year admired with starry eyes. "I can't wait to get back to Hogwarts!" It just sounded so fun, still! Not like Beauxbatons with all its stuffy rules...

She nodded and continued hopping up and down stairs as the professor talked. "Maybe." Hmm, maybe it WOULD be cool to animate one of her drawings and give it to her little sister for Christmas. But wow, they had BOGGARTS at Hogwarts? Bernie had read about those, but didn't understand them all the way. She knew better than to admit that in front of the DADA professor though. "Sounds kinda scary," she agreed. Didn't boggarts prey on your worst fears? Bernie didn't even KNOW her worst fear... heights, maybe? Not like this staircase, like REAL heights.

She was just about to the top of the spiraling staircase with her map. "Well, Mr. Professormaster Sir, we're almost to your office." Wasn't he lucky he'd found her?
