The vases out front are only a hint of what you’ll find inside the Spiny Serpent. As you pass through the doorway a buzzer that howls like a banshee goes off, announcing your presence to the shopkeeper and the denizens of The Spiny Serpent. The store is split between flora and fauna; sentient plants, magical plants, dangerous plants, semi-illegal plants, can all be found here. Likewise any dangerous or dark creature you have a hankering for can be found within the walls of the shop.
If there is a creature you'd fancy but can't quite be bothered with applying for the appropriate permits, you've come to the right place. Need guides for breeding magical plants or creatures? You'll find those here too, plus everything you'll need in your, shall we say, creative endeavors.
Anything that you can’t see on the shelves in front of you can still be found... for the right price, so go ahead and place an order if you dare, just remember you didn’t get it from here.
Return to Knockturn Alley when you're done, and check out the other shops on the upper level...
... if you have business there.

Mercer Doyle Branxton wasn't a rule breaker by nature, but he only followed rules that were well explained to him. So his grandmother might have long warned him not to wander down Knockturn Alley, and his mother would have kept a tight hold on him when they did school shopping in the past, but he was doing his own shopping this year and he wasn't going anywhere specifically dangerous. AND there was a shop that sold interesting things that were legal (probably) and needed for school and somewhat within his budget, so he wouldn't even be lying when asked what he did on his trip for school supplies.
Granted, he could feel eyes on him the moment he entered the shop, and no amount of bluster or bravado was going to make him look like anything more than a child wandering where he really wasn't supposed to be. Head down and hands tucked into his pockets where they couldn't be eaten by a plant, Mercer shuffled down dark aisles to see as much as he could see before someone chased him out.

This place? Kind of a creep fest.
Look, Celinde hadn't intended on going anywhere near Knockturn Alley but somewhere on the way out of Diagon they'd made a left where the rest of the Grimgang had made a right. The alley had not been very welcoming and the 14-year-old had slightly panicked their way into the first shop she had seen. It was not much better. Wrapping her arms around her chest, Celli peered through the shop but did not venture further in- it was like she was glued to the spot- not willing to leave but not willing to remain here either. Merlin's sake, this was awful. Every single person in this shop had a grimy look about them which reminded Cel a little of the paps, but even they didn't leer at her the way these people did.
With a shudder, Celli quickly moved down the first aisle to her right and just managed to bump into the only other kids here.
THANK YOU, MERLIN.
He didn't look greasy at all.
Without a second thought, Celli put her arm through the elder boy's. "Hi, fancy meeting you here." She said, putting on her brightest and warmest smile. Maybe he wouldn't notice the slight tremble in her voice.

Mercer squinted in the half light (really, he needed to wear his glasses or get his eyes fixed) and was about to correct this small fry who had taken a liking to his arm. And then... giving the low ceilings and dark aisles another lookover, he reconsidered. They could be temporary comrades-at-arms if that was what the situation required. "Hey, fancy... me?"
Very good start. Mercer coughed into his free hand and pointed out the section of man-eating plants. "I was just biding my time waiting on you, best friend of mine, while wondering whether the plants ever try to eat each other. Technically speaking, if you're pure carnivorous plant, eating another plant would make you... omnivorous, right?" Mercer wasn't bad at conversations. He just wasn't all that good at it when it came to strangers.

Celinde was not sure she'd hitched her wagon to the right train. The older boy- for she could now see that he was in fact older- was looking at her like a five-year-old with boogeys hanging from their nose. She was not five and her nose was perfectly clean, thank you very much.
She raised her arched brows, trying to convey with just a look that he needed to just go with it.
And then he started talking and relief poured into the 14-year-old like hot tea. "Carnivorous means meat eater." She pointed out, her tone now playful as if chiding an old friend. "Plants are plants, so I doubt they have much of a taste for one another." Peers at him as if appraising him. "You probably look tasty, though. Maybe we should get out of here and meet the others at Flourish and Blott's before a plant gobbles you up." Celinde was being subtle, but the suggestion was clear enough- or so she hoped, this wasn't Cyp's or Winnie after all.

Please get her out of here.
"No, but see..." She probably had a name, and if they were best friends, he'd know it. She was around his age, probably a fellow student he should recognize from Hogwarts, but the best he could do would be a guess. "I know carnivorous means meat eater, BUT my point is that begging plants can't be choosy. Anyway."
Mercer glanced up the dark aisle toward where very meager sunlight was creeping in around the sturdy front door. Escape? Not yet, please. "I've just got here and haven't seen what all I want to see, but I can walk you to the corner, if you want." He might never get a chance to see the inside of a place like this again, but his sense of chivalry was tingling.
