Set away from the muggle village of Heptonstall, on the bank of the beck, is Old Mill Cottage. It has been the property of the Fortunea family since the Muggles abandoned it at the end of the nineteenth century. It is a patchwork of different building materials as it has been extended a few times by different inhabitants.

Ronan and Pandora Cavanaugh are the current owners, as Pandora inherited the cottage from her father Edward Fortunea. The cottage has undergone extensive repairs recently, as Pandora and Ronan decided to get married.

Guests are welcome so long as they announce their presence, preferably owling them or sending a message with a patronus first. There are security spells set around the cottage, so visitors may find that they cannot cross the boundaries. While Ronan is relaxed and easy going, Pandora is a very private person and home is where she shows her true nature to her friends from the Ministry and beyond.

Pandora's pet kneazle, Tajma, is a bossy little thing. He'll let you know if he likes you!

Tadhg, a handsome tawny owl, is also a recent addition to the household. He roosts in the old laudry at the back of the cottage, away from Tajma so that is sleep is not disturbed, as he is prone to moodiness if it is. He has been join by Duana, a sweet natured female, who keeps him in check.

Lancelot moved in when Ronan did and is doing his best to stay out of Tajma's way.

Casper, a rescue dog, was a possibly ill advised gift for Pandora while she was pregnant. He was too cute to send back.

The layout of the cottage is as follows:
Ground Floor
The Hall: A narrow hall runs from the front door to the kitchen. The hall is painted white and there are wizard paintings hanging along this hall.

Kitchen: The hall opens up onto a small neat kitchen which is heated by an old fashioned aga. There is a round table where at one time five people could have sat around comfortably. There is a door that leads out to the garden and another that leads to the cellar. There is also a small pantry just off the kitchen.

Parlour: A small, formerly grand room, the Parlour now looks a little shabby. It has been repaired but most of the books and furniture are missing. In the corner of the room is a door which leads onto a narrow staircase.

Family Sitting Room: Repaired by Pandora and perhaps not in the most child friendly way as it is almost completely white.

Dining room: Repaired by Ronan, it is a relaxed space to eat and entertain.

Ronan's Study: This room was formerly the sewing room, but when Ronan moved in, Pandora repaired and redecorated in the style of his London flat so that he felt the house was just as much his as it was hers. This is the only room with electricity, powered by solar panels on the roof.

First Floor
Pandora's Study: This room has recently been repaired by Jared Walker, Pandora's colleague. Pandora was not pleased by this, as he did it without consulting her. There is a beautiful rosewood desk and matching chair and an elegant leather chaise lounge. The walls are lined with books, but there are large gaps where books are missing as Pandora had thrown them away before Jared repaired the room, thinking that they were beyond repair. There is a door that leads to the balcony outside and another which leads to the rest of the upstairs of the house. The fire in this room is the one that is connected to the Floo Network.

Balcony: More of an observation deck, the balcony is a left over feature from the days when the beck powered the mill. There is a wooden table and chairs so that Pandora can sit and enjoy the sunsets and sun rises. And perhaps a glass of wine.

Bathroom: Decorated in Pandora's rather stiff, formal style this room is practical and predictably white.

Ronan and Pandora's Bedroom: The only open bedroom in the house is the only room that seems to have been fully restored. Pandora in particular views this room as a sanctuary and compared to the rest of the house it is extremely opulent. When Ronan moved in, Pandora added an en-suite bathroom similar to the one in his London flat.

Nursery: The smallest room has been emptied and painted white, mainly because Ronan and Pandora couldn't settle on a colour. This will be the nursery for their twins.

The Hall: There is another narrow hall upstairs which mirrors the one on the ground floor.

Closed Rooms: Three Bedrooms.

Pandora sat at the kitchen table surrounded by books. Potions books, law reference books, books on magical creatures and the Dark Arts art piled around her and she is making detailed cross-referenced notes. She also has muggle law and history books open to help her in her research.

Rubbing her temples, she looked at the books sadly. Most of the ones she needed had been destroyed. She would have to go back to Flourish and Blotts. She smiled at the thought of being surrounded by all those books. Yes that's why she liked going to Flourish and Blotts. The books.

New Scene

Arriving with a pop Dora brushed down the front off her robes and gained her composure. Apparation made her a little queasy but she loved having the ability to turn up anywhere in an instant. She looked the house over and hoped she had arrived at the right place.

Shrugging she raised her hand and knocked on the door. She smiled as she waited for Pandora to answer. She was going to be quite surprised to see Dora on her front door step.

Pandora heard a knock on the door and jumped, dropping her cup. It shattered at her feet. Who on earth is that? she thought, absentmindedly flicking her wand at the shards of china. They sprang back into a cup as she walked out of the kitchen, along the thin central corridor of the cottage to the door. She opened it to see Dora standing there with pink and blonde hair and her face still heavily scarred.

"Dora, hello. How can I help you?" She said pleasantly, only holding the door open as far as she needed to.

Dora frowned when she heard what she thought was china breaking inside the house she wondered if maybe she should have owled before she came. Yes, the answer was yes! Gah, Dora what an idiot!

SHe rearranged her face into a bright smile as she heard Pandora approaching the door. She said to her as she greeted her, "'Lo, Pandora. Good day I hope. I came by to see if you were okay. I heard that things have been quite the sticky situation since we last saw one another."

Pandora blinked several times. "You, you heard about that?" she asked, almost losing her composure. She was going to have to let the woman into her home, this was not a conversation to have where the muggles from the village might hear them.

"You'd better come in. Just, umm, follow the hallway down to the end, you'll get to the kitchen." She stepped back to allow Dora to come past her. She made sure that she was standing in front the most damaged part of the wall.

Dora smiled kindly at her and simply shrugged her shoulders. "Word travels fast when people have nothing better to do than gossip" she said. She looked at Pandora with concern on her face. Her cool resolve was obviously wavering and she was worried about the woman.

Dora nodded and stepped into the house around Pandora. She kept her eyes straight ahead and went exactly as Pandora had directed her. She noticed the obvious destruction of the home but daren't ask. She too had had her own experience with deconstruction of her home so she wasn't too curious. It was none fo her business after all.

Dora stepped into the kitchen and took a seat. Looking to Pandora she said, "So, tell me what happened. It is different from nosy little witches that have nothing better to do than gossip. i hope it's alright that I apparated here. I didn't think to owl ahead and ask. Not really my style." Dora smiled sweetly at her.

Pandora sighed. "So I'm the subject of Ministry gossip? I suppose that could be a good thing, depending on what they're saying."

She followed Dora down the hallway, flicking her wand at certain doors so that they locked as she passed them. She really didn't know this woman well enough to have her find the destruction behind the those doors. She used the time it took to walk down the corridor to regain some of her composure.

When Dora sat at her scrubbed kitchen table, which was still covered in piles of books and documents, Pandora moved straight to the range and put the kettle on. She had a feeling that this conversation would require lubrication at the some point. "Coffee or tea?" she asked, bending down to pick up her recently repaired cup. She took a tin from one of the cupboards and put some biscuits on a plate.

"Well, you're lucky that I was in. I was contemplating a walk in the woods on the other side of the beck." She smiled automatically, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. She looked straight at Dora, wondering if she could trust her. After a long pause she said, "I lost my temper, that's what happened. I said something that could be take the wrong way. I told the Head of Magical games and sports that he was a devoted bigot and that I'd hate to see the consequences of his narrow minded attitude come back to bite him." She turned her back on Dora to fiddle with the kettle, which had begun to whistle as the water boiled. She took a deep breath and turned back to Dora. "Do you think that they'll sack me for that? I've tried repeatedly to get them to listen to me, but they're so set on what they want they're not listening." Her bitterness was obvious now, she wasn't trying to hide it anymore. "Do you think I went too far?"

"Tea, please. And I am sorry I barged over, I just wanted to make sure you're alright is all. I don't mean to intrude." Dora said looking properly abashed.

Dora kept the shock off of her face when Pandora revealed that she had threatened a Ministry Department Head. Then she shook her head and looked Pandora in the face and said, "Well, I am not sure how it will be taken. THe Minister could fire you or they could just reprimand you for your mouthiness." SHe smirked a bit at her made up word. She liked Pandora, she stood up for what she believed in and didn't care what others thought. Not unlike herself.

"I will be honest with you, it could cause an upstir this close to the Quidditch Cup. We are very much skating on thin ice. I am not sure what will happen. You aren't the only one to worry here. THere are more of us who took part in this ordeal. But, I don't hink you went too far. I hexed my boyfriend for Merlin's sake. You getting mouthy is no biggie in my eyes." Dora said with a little giggle. She ran her fingertips absent mindedly over the scars on her face. She knew that it must be quite shocking to everyone but they made her proud.

Pandora nodded. "Tea it is then." She put a couple of spoons of tea into the teapot and then added the boiling water. Placing the cups onto the tray with the biscuits, the teapot and a small jug of milk, she carried them over to the table and sat down.

"You know, my mouth has never really got me in trouble before. That's why I'm a bit adrift with all this really. I've never lost my temper so completely before, but ever since... well, lest just say that I seem to have changed in the last year." She wasn't sure why she was trusting Dora, she just felt that she could. "I usually present my argument in a more rational and reasoned fashion." She gestured towards the piles of paperwork. "I've been putting together a some research to support our position. I'm not sure how much good it will do. I have a feeling I'll get called in for discipline soon. I don't really want to get sacked but I'm not sure what I'll do if I'm expected to apologise to the odious man. He really was quite offensive."

She watched Dora trace her scars with her fingertips. "I hope you don't think me rude but why, if you are a metamorphmagus, don't you hide those scars? I only ask because my father spent so long bemoaning his. He couldn't stand to look in the mirror."

Dora smiled at the woman as she came and placed the tray on the table. Dora contained herself and didn't reach for a biscuit just yet.

Pandora told about her ability to stay calm and collected and Dora frowned a bit. "I truly envy you your ability to stay calm. I wish I had more patience" she said seriously. DOra nodded as Pandora continued to speak about her problem at work. She smiled at her weakly when she was done and said, "You know, I wouldn't apologize to him either. Honestly, I won't apologize to anyone but Ben if it comes to that. Ben Cobbelsten, my boss is a great man and if he is upset by this then I will do what's right by him, but none of the others deserve it. You are a very stong minded woman and I am sure that any research you come out with will greatly help yourself and the cause."

Dora immediately dropped her hand when Pandora asked her how come she didn't metamorph and hide those nasty scars of hers. SHe smiled politely at her and said, "They are a reminder of what I have lost and what I have thus gained from my fighting. Silas has made me whole again, I have no need to hide them anymore. I will some day I am sure, but right now I am wearing them as a badge of honor."

Pandora noticed Dora eyeing the biscuits. "Try one. I bought them, I promise." She reached for a Ginger Newt herself and bit into it. Mmmm, that's lovely, she thought a smile dancing at the corners of her lips.

"I'm not sure that it's a case of me having the ability to stay calm, in so much as an inability to allow my feelings to show. I've spent far, far too long being calm and practical and swallowing what I was feeling. I'm not sure I know how to be anything but the heartless ice-maiden you see before you." " she said wryly. She had been called so many variations of that at school that it amused her to refer to herself that way.

Pandora smiled in an uncharacteristically soft and genuine way as Dora explained about her scars. "That's... that's brilliant." She stood up suddenly, knocking over her chair. Turning her face to the window, she dried the tears that had come from nowhere.

Dora smiled at her and picked up a biscuit and nibbled on it a bit before picking up the tea kettle and pouring herself a cup. She smiled at Pandora as she ranted a bit. Dora was actually a bit shocked when she called herself an ice- maiden. "I don't think you're an ice- maiden. YOu're just tough and that's okay." Dora said politely.

SHe had no clue what she had said to upset Pandora but she also didn't know her well enough to go comfort her either. SHe shifted uncomfortably in the chair and quietly said, "I am sorry to have upset you, Pandora. If you'd like some privacy I'll uhh go. If that's what you want." Dora was really ata loss as to what to do for her. She felt that leaving would be rude, but she didn't know Pandora either.... Yikes.

Pandora turned back to face her guest, eyes shining brightly but her cheeks free from tears. "I'm so sorry, I'm not usually like this. My father could never be proud of his scars, despite the fact he got them trying to defend my mother and Prometheus. This must be grief or something. Like you said I'm tough... tough to the point of coldness, hence the ice-maiden. You remember how the boys could be at school I'm sure. If you weren't giggly and foolish, well then you were an ice-maiden." She attempted to smile but dissolved into tears. "I'm, I'm sorry," She sobbed, "but please don't go."

Dora nodded her head as though she understood what Pandora meant... she was one of the guys in school. She was a troublemaker and all the guys loved to plan pranks with her and she could be girlly or a tomboy, either one. It was the girls Dora had had trouble with. They didn't like her because she was a freak or that she was closer to their boyfriends than they were...

"Kids are horrible, really. I think you're a lovely woman. Who cares how tough you are, you do what you must to survive. It's simple as that." Dora said softly to her. Then she picked up the tea kettle and poured them both a cuppa and did a quick warming charm over the cups to insure they were the right temperature and said, "Here, have a drink, it will make you feel better. And I won't go anywhere." Dora said and then gave the woman a sweet smile and motioned her to sit back down. "I had a bout of crying meself, not to worry." Dora reassured her.

Pandora didn't believe her ears. She was so shocked that she stopped crying. "You, you think I'm lovely?" Pandora stared at her for several long moments. No-one, to her recollection, had ever called her lovely. Her father had always called her 'Sunshine', but never Lovely. "What makes you say I'm lovely? I can't think of anything I've done since we met which would make you say that."

She gratefully took a sip of tea. "Thank you for staying. Would you mind look at the information I've collected? I'd value your opinion." Now that she had mastered her tears, her reserve had returned in full force.

Dora simply shrugged and said, "Well, you still let me in your home after seeing me at my worst, I was quite rude to you and yet here we are. I'd say that you are quite lovely." She sipped her tea and smiled into her cup.

Dora perked up a bit and then answered her quickly, "Oh. I'd love to look over the stuff you've found. And thanks for saying that you'd value my opinion. That compliment usually only comes after someone tells me what kind of prank they are going to pull." Dora let out a little chuckle and shook her head.

Pandora considered the younger woman. "Well, to be honest, I didn't want to let you in but I couldn't think of a way to get rid of you without a fuss. My muggle neighbours have a rather irritating habit of hearing everything that goes on. I have had to do more memory charms than I care to admit." She took another sip of tea. "Hmm, I think I could go for something a little stronger, don't you?" Without waiting for an answer she stood up and crossed to the pantry where the elf-made wine was stood on the cold stone shelf to keep it naturally cool. Pausing to collect two glasses, she returned to the table.

"Oh, so you were a prankster were you? I was usually the unwilling victim." She passed Dora the dossier she had put together. "I'm waiting to be hauled into the Minster's office. I want to go in armed to the teeth. I think the stupid man took my remark as a threat." she said, with more than a touch of asperity. "It's simply a figure of speech, it's hardly my fault he's so dense."

Dora smiled a crooked smile at the woman and said, "Well, Jadis, I thank you for not turning me away. I would have gone without a fuss though, just for the record." Dora smiled wider at her and nodded her head when Pandora asked if she would like something a bit stronger. "I think that is a grand idea" Dora agreed.

Taking the dossier Dora began to flip through. She was thoroughly impressed with Pandora's obvious knack for research. Dora envied her that. Dora was a take action type of person, not a thinker. But that's not to say Dora was unintelligent, she just preferred action. "This is really great Pandora! You will be more than prepared if the Minister calls for you. People are quick to take things as threats rather than at face value sometimes." Dora told her. She was really glad that she had come to call today. It was obvious Pandora wasn't too keen on the fact that Dora had simply shown up, but Dora was glad to make a new friend.. kind of friend.. non enemy.

Pandora couldn't help but allow a smile to creep over her face. "Jadis? The White Witch who plunged Narnia into one hundred years of winter?" She let out a small laugh. "I like that, that's what most people think of me, I'm sure." She poured two generous measures of her favourite elf-made rose. Holding up her own glass she said, "Here's to being subversive." After clinking glasses with Dora, she took a sip of the wine, savouring the taste of the wine.

Pandora watched as Dora flicked through the dossier. "Thanks, I have put a few hours into it. I just wish I had worked on that first, rather than losing my temper. I feel like I've let my fa- myself down." Her veneer was slipping again. What was it about this young woman that made her want to drop her guard. She was so... earnest, perhaps that was it. "Hmm perhaps my choice of phrase left something to be desired?"

Dora smiled and nodded saying, "The one and only! Christmas stealer, you are." She let out a little giggle and clinked glasses with Jadis and took a deep sip from her glass. "This is a very nice wine, elf- made, is it?" Dora commented before taking another sip.

"We all wish we had a time turner to go back and fix the things we acted rashly about, but we can only learn from those things and move on" Dora said with a slight shrug of the shoulders as she continued to look through the dossier. She was truly amazed at the detail Pandora had gone to with the research.

When Pandora slipped again Dora looked to her and smiled an understanding smile then said softly, "I know what you mean. I am lucky Silas is a forgiving man like he is! And please, Pandora, don't self edit for my benefit. If you feel the need to talk about something I am here to listen, if not that's okay too. I'm still here." Dora smiled at her and looked back to the dossier... waiting... or not.

Pandora couldn't help but grin when Dora called her the Christmas Stealer. "Yes it's elf-made, but only from free elves mind you." Pandora had strong views about elf rights. "It's expensive, but worth it." She drank deeply from her glass.

"Oh I've learned from this alright, I've learned that I don't care what they think of me." This was a cold statement of fact, Pandora really didn't care. She was so tired of not being able to effect a meaningful change, her job felt like a prison and the walls were closing in.

She considered Dora, wondering if she should say anything. After taking another sip of wine, she spoke in a flat, toneless voice. "My father was totally changed after we were attacked. It was like he became a different person. He wanted us to have a quiet, private life, to avoid trouble and attention. So that's what I became. I didn't have friends at school really, people knew about what happened, it was a big story, it happened just before I started Hogwarts. Prometheus and I had just bought our wands and books. My father burned Prometheus' things while I was away. I miss him more than I either of my parents. He was my other self and all of a sudden he was gone." A single tear trickled down her cheek and plopped onto the table.

Dora nodded at Jadis and smiled sweetly when she said the elves that made the wine were free elves. She hadn't expected anything else from this woman. "You know I stopped caring what others thought about me a LONG time ago. It's too time consuming, and when you're mum is as judgemental as mine it is the only way to stay sane." Dora explained before she took a drink from her glass.

Dora set the glass down and reached across the table and lay her hand on top of Pandora's and said, "I can't say I know how that perticular pain cuts you, but I understand pain as much as the next girl. Don't let it shut you off from the world. What happened was a tragic accident and I get that it hurts like Hell. Let it out and you'll feel better. I am not saying it will stop the pain but if you share it with someone else it lightens the load." Dora knew far too well what it cost to keep that kind of pain and rage locked up inside.

Pandora looked at Dora feeling insanely jealous. She wished that she had experienced a mother like that, a parent like that. She had been the carer, the one who sorted out the problems, dealt with the muggles, brewed the potions. She nodded, unable to reply, strangled by her jealousy.

She smiled sadly at Dora, her eyes swimming with tears. "I can't start talk now, I'm sorry. I'm too used to controlling it, dealing with it on my own. What I've said to you is more than I've said to anyone in twenty years. One glass of wine and half a cup of tea won't change it."

Suddenly the kitchen felt tiny. She had been in there for days, whenever she wasn't at work or sleeping. "It seemed a lovely day, we should take this up to the balcony and enjoy the fresh air. What do you think?"

Dora saw the sadness in Pandora's eyes and she felt so horrible for the woman's obvious torment. She took her hand off he Pandora's and said, "I didn't mean that you needed to start spilling right now, but know if you'd like to talk anytime I am here." She smiled at her warmly and rose from her chair. "The balcony sounds like a grand idea, lead the way." Dora said as she picked up her glass and the bottle of wine and waited to be led there.
