HULLO THERE. The name is Kate(Katelyn) and this is my first fanfiction on SS. I've worked really on this one, actually, and I'm pretty far into it actually, which I think is much easier than writing it on the spot. IF YOU EVER SEE A GRAMMAR MISTAKE please tell me. I try my best to not have those, since I'm pretty much a grammar Nazi myself, just kindly(or meanly?) tell me where it is. I would hate to be reading it later on, find a mistake, and be embarrassed!

I am not saying which it is, because the first chapter explains it. I don't want to ruin the mysteriousness of my first chapter. So just read and figure it out for yourself!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the characters, or the plot, or anything, really. I'm simply filling in the times that JoAnne has not mentioned. She is the true genius here!

The Mistake

Ch. 1: Only the Beginning

She stood there, looking around her bedroom with tears making their way slowly down her pale cheek, the pitter-patter of them landing on her lap like soft rain. Her green eyes blinked, again, and again, and eventually she couldn’t hold them open. She kept them closed, longing for sleep to overtake her miserable life. She lay on her bed, curling into a tiny ball as she wished she weren’t her, as she wished he wasn’t…him. Why? Why would he do this? To her? To their friendship? Her dark, red hair glittered in the fading sunlight, and as the sun went down so did her spirits. As night fell, she began to sob more, and her heart couldn’t stand to be in her body-in fact, it was trying to get out, it was beating so hard.

She heard a door close softly, and her eyes shot open. She did not move, however, but remained curled up on her bed. She heard him moving around in the kitchen, the boiling water, his attempt to cook. Lily did not stir. She heard her bedroom door groaning open, and she felt him sit next to her on the bed. She shut her eyes tightly again, only faintly pretending that he was not there.

“Lily…please…” he begged, his voice etched with a deep depression, a longing. “You don’t understand…Lily…”

Lily opened her emerald eyes and sat up rather abruptly. She continued to shed tears, the pieces of her soul hitting the hard wood floor. With each tear that hit the ground, a knife seemed to stab the man in his heart. She suddenly walked out of the room and began to save his horrible attempt at cooking. He followed her, like a loyal dog, and stood behind her. His hopes began to mount as she continued her silence. He wanted her to at least talk, but at least she wasn’t shouting at him. Then, his hopes spiraled out of control as Lily began to sob again.

“Se-se-severus…h-how could you? HOW? I th-th-though we were -f-friends…more than f-f-friends…” she stuttered, barely getting her words out as she cried, harder than ever, wheezing so hard as she tried to contain her breath. She crumbled onto the floor and covered her face with her shaking, pale hands. Severus felt a deep drop in his stomach, as if he had just been punched…he dug his nails into his arm where that thing was, as if trying to pry it off himself. His dark eyes began to water, and he continued to grip his newly acquired tattoo with his fingernails. He knelt down beside her.

“Lily…please…understand…you must…MUST!” he said loudly, more forcefully than he had intended. Lily continued to sob, but she looked up at him with wide, green, fearful eyes.

“How am I supposed to do that? You betrayed me, you betrayed EVERYONE,” she said, tears still spilling endlessly onto the floor, but her voice no longer shook. She sounded strong, angry, and fierce. She held onto the counter for support as she stood up, slowly, and leaned her back against it. She wiped her eyes, and continued, “Severus…this wasn’t the only way. Not at all. Dumbledore-he could have protected you!” she spat finally, glaring at him with fire in her eyes. Severus shook his head.

“No. M-my friends said I had to. Lily, please, calm down. I had to. They were pressuring me…he would kill me. He says…he says he needs me,” whispered Severus. Lily shook her head and continued pacing furiously.

“I’m moving out,” she finally said softly, finally stopping her pacing to look at him. Severus’ face twisted into a horrible shape, and his eyes squinted as he held back tears. He grabbed her shoulders and gripped hard.

“No, Lily! Don’t leave me…please…you must understand. You’ll be safe this way. You’re in danger, you’re a muggle-born…they’ll eventually try to kill you, they’re going after all of them! By doing this, I can ensure that they won’t do anything!” he said urgently, his eyes watery and his lips inches from hers. She looked into his deep eyes, and knew he was telling the truth. What he had done, he had done to help protect her. Maybe he had a point…just maybe. “Where would you go, Lils?” he asked her gently, resisting the enormous urge to just hug and kiss her.

“James,” she mumbled, breaking their eye-to-eye stare. She suddenly became very interested in looking at her feet, while Severus’ stomach flipped over.

“James? Potter? Are you mad?” he said quietly, but his voice shook with deadly anger. “Still comes on to you, then? Even though he knows…he knows we’re together?” he said, letting go of Lily so roughly that he accidentally pushed her away. He turned away from her as well and stared out the window. He stared at the many stars in the sky, glittering away as if they were jewels in the black night. The dark so outweighed the light of the stars, and Severus considered them. He then looked at Lily, one of the only pure and good things in his sad life.

“You can’t leave me..I’ll go mad. I love you, Lily,” he whispered. Lily sniffled as she began to cry again. She walked over to Severus and placed her hands on his pale cheeks. She kissed him softly, an innocent kiss, and quickly turned away afterwards. Severus didn’t move, nor did he open his eyes. He seemed to be savoring the gift, the precious gift, from Lily. When he opened his eyes, Lily wasn’t in the living room.

Severus went into their room and saw her sitting on the bed again, apparently in deep thought. Her wand lay forgotten on the floor. He picked it up and set it down gently next to her and then joined her. He wrapped his arm around her, and she placed her head against his shoulder. He smiled as he glanced down at her, her hair glittering even in the dark. How soft it was, and how good it smelled. Perhaps she used a certain shampoo-he’d have to try it, his hair was always oily-

“Sev,” came a whisper, so low that Severus wasn’t entirely sure that it even came from Lily.

“Yes?” he replied, his hearth thumping against his chest. He was quite sure she could feel it, it was thumping so hard.

“I’ll stay. But please, he is one of my best friends…I will not refuse to see him…just know, I love you,” she whispered. Severus’ heart fluttered, not even marred by her mention of that fool. “But please, don’t get in too deep. Don’t swim where the current comes over your head, Sev,” she warned him. And with that, she got up.

“Sleeping on the couch..?” asked Severus, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. Lily grinned and nodded.

“Of course., Severus,” she replied curtly, but her smile absolutely shined through the room to Severus. Lily walked out the room, and Severus quickly jumped up.

“LILY! You sleep on the bed, I will sleep on the couch. I can’t have you sleeping on the couch…it would be un-gentlemanly of me!” He then pushed her playfully back into the room and closed the door after her.

Severus made his way to the couch and plopped down in the plushy furniture. He looked up at the ceiling, thinking hard. Lily was safe, since he became one, she had to be…right? He pushed his skeptical thoughts from his mind as he turned over and let himself go to the friendliness of sleep, where his mind traveled not only away from his life, but to a place where no one disturbed him or Lily.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, here is ch. 2!

Ch. 2 Gah!

He doesn’t want you to tell anyone…especially not James…don’t say a word! Lily thought to herself as she walked up the steps to the apartment complex that James and Sirius lived in. She was quite surprised when James had told her that they decided to live amongst the muggles, and couldn’t help but chuckle as she approached their apartment and heard loud noises coming from inside. Oh dear, what were they up to now?
She knocked softly, and heard an exclamation of joy coming from inside. The door was thrown open, and Sirius was leaning against the door frame and raising his eyebrows at her in a very handsome fashion.

“Why hello there, Lily Evans. How is my most beautiful friend doing today?” he said, his cool attitude causing Lily to burst into fits of giggles. Sirius was by far the most handsome fellow Lily knew, but he was entirely not her type. Plus, he was only teasing her.

“Oh, Sirius, my most astonishingly handsome friend, I am fine today,” she replied with a giggle. Sirius winked and took her hand in his; he then kissed it softly. Suddenly, Sirius was slammed to the ground by another man with very untidy black hair and glasses. The two wrestlled playfully for a bit. Lily stepped inside and couldn’t stop herself from laughing.

“Honestly, you two are such fools sometimes. But funny fools,” she told them, still laughing her haunting laugh. James smirked up at her from the ground and whistled.

“Lily! You look amazing today, as everyday…date tonight?” he said casually. Lily immediately stopped laughing and rolled her eyes. She walked into their small kitchen and started to take out pots and pans, preparing to cook.

“You know I’m with Sev.”

“Oh yes, that oily git,” mumbled Sirius, getting up and helping James get up as well. “Where is ole’ Snivellus?”

“Don’t call him that, Sirius! don’t be so mean!” she called to him. “…or I won’t cook for you...either of you,” she finished, a nasty smirk playing on her lips. Both of the men’s eyes widened.

“You’re bluffing!”

“You know we’d starve!”

“Well, we are living together, now, and we’re getting very serious. And I don’t want either of you two messing up my perfectly amazing relationship. You two just don’t understand Severus,” she replied, brandishing her wand around to begin the meal. James quickly glanced at Sirius, and both silently had that “best friend eye conversation.”

“Where is your old…pal…anyways?” asked James with a serious tone, walking slowly towards Lily. Lily suddenly froze. She looked as if she were thinking deeply about something.

“Work,” she muttered, and continued what she was doing.

“Got a job, did he? Teaching the dark Arts?” asked Sirius from across the room, and James raised his eyebrows. Lily scowled.

“No, of course not. But you two need to get on that. That’s why I came over, to help you look for jobs! James go get the Daily Prophet,” she ordered, adding different ingredients to a boiling pan with her wand. James sighed and went to rummage around his room for the paper. He knew something was up, especially since she had changed the subject so abruptly.

Lily sighed with relief as the subject was dropped. She knew exactly where Sev was, and she wasn’t about to tell those two. They would freak out, most likely, and would quickly blow everything out of proportion. She checked her watch…she had the night shift at St. Mungo’s tonight. She wouldn’t get to see Severus until tomorrow night…

“Okay…I want to be an auror. You know that, Lillybear,” said James as he slammed the paper down on the table. Lily waved her wand, and the food continued to cook itself without her supervision. She sat down next to James and took in that deep, earthy smell that she found so intoxicating. She shook her head and snapped out of her revelry.

“Well, I want to be a healer, but I have to start off as a night watcher. I have to walk around St. Mungo’s all night and make sure nobody…goes nuts or anything. It’s not much, but it’s a start. You should start somewhere in the ministry…preferably the Department of Magical Law Enforcement…” she muttered and started to flip through the Prophet. James did the same, as he had a month’s worth of newspapers.

“Are you opposed to a desk job?” she asked James and Sirius.

James, still flipping through the Daily Prophet, replied, “No. I need to start somewhere, like you said…” but Sirius, who was laying comfortably on the sofa, called out, “NO! I need to stretch my legs!”

Lily huffed and puffed with annoyance, her eyebrows furrowed. “Sirius Black! If you want a job and you’re going to be picky, you better come look yourself!” she snapped at him, and Sirius sat abruptly.

“Fine!” he shot back, and sauntered over to the table, running a hand through his wavy and rather long hair. James shook his own already messy hair and sighed.

“I guess I could take a look at…this,” he said as he squinted his eyes at the small newspaper print. He slid the paper over the table to Lily and pointed to the add.

HELP WANTED: Desk job, requires answering letters for Department of Magical Law Enforcement and alerting aurors when an emergency arises! Send letter to below address if interested.

Lily gave him a small smile, which he returned, and nodded. “Sounds good. Write to them right away, James,” she said, conjuring a letter and a quill. Sirius’ owl fluttered over and hooted excitedly. Sirius stroked his owl’s neck affectionately. James scribbled down something, which Lily was trying to read over his shoulder. James shivered a bit as he felt Lily’s breath on the back of his neck, her scent filling his nostrils with pure satisfaction.

“There. Send it to that address, Rocky,” James pointed to the address in the paper. The great bird flew off in a frenzy, leaving behind a few feathers. Sirius chuckled.

“Likes to make a mess, much like myself. Well, I can’t find anything, and I don’t want to work in the ministry. I would rather work with…dragons…or Hippogriffs, or anything with animals…” Sirius said with a sigh as he leaned back in his chair, his hands behind his head.

“Dragons?! Are you absolutely off your rocker?” squealed Lily with shock displayed on her face, her eyes widened. “No! I won’t allow you!”

“Oh, and Lily Evans will stop me, will she?” asked Sirius with a smirk. And with that, he got up, grabbed his cloak, and was about to walk out when James called to him.

“Hey, where are you going/!?” he asked, confusion spreading across his face. Sirius’ smirk widened.

“Off. Probably that new bar that opened up in Diagon Alley. You two can meet me there later…oh, forgot, someone has work,” lashed Sirius back, his eyes glinting mischievously. He left, leaving an awkward silence between the remaining two. After about five minutes Lily jumped up.

“The food!” she shouted, and she ran to the kitchen, saving the food just in time. She fixed all the food up, placing them in separate bowls and plates. She set a plate of food in front of James and sat across from him. They ate in silence until James finished. He sat back and simply stared at Lily. Lily could feel his eyes penetrating her, and did her best to not stare back. He was making this much more awkward than it needed to be. And he was being blatantly obviously.

Finally, “Will you stop?” she snapped, rather sharply. James smiled, but he did not look away.

“You have beautiful eyes.”

“I’m leaving,” she replied harshly, her voice shaking. She stood up, but James grabbed her wrist.

“Don’t leave, Lily, please,” he said, his smile faded and his voice shrunken. This was the second time, in two days, that someone had told her that, but this situation was much different. He stared at her some more, his blue eyes digging deep inside of her, and she felt a sensation, one that she also felt with Severus, and yanked her hand away with fear. No, no, not James. She quickly grabbed her wand, shoved it in her pocket, and headed straight for the door. James touched her shoulder, and she felt a weird, fluttering sensation in her stomach.

“Lily-wait, I’m sorry!” he said, spinning her around. She shook her head. “I gotta’ go, I have work later and I need a nap. I’ll send an owl by tomorrow morning, and I’ll probably stop by tomorrow for lunch again…” she mumbled softly, her fear escalating as she exited.

Ch. 3 - Let's Meet Some Death Eaters!

What was that? No, she didn’t like James like that…but she had felt it. Stirring inside of her. Deep down, way deep…James was an absolute prat…a rather attractive, funny, witty prat, but one all the same…she slammed her door behind her, shaking a little bit. Sev was off doing Merlin-knows-what for You-Know-Who, and she was home alone with nothing but her confusing thoughts for company.

She plopped down on her couch and stared at the blank wall. She and Sev were supposed to go shopping for house accessories this weekend…she and Sev. Her heart skipped a beat as she thought of him…he was perfect. They had been best friends since they were about nine…naturally they had fallen for each other. He had the most gorgeous eyes, when he wasn’t in a “mood.” They sparkled with an intensity she couldn’t see in anyone else. They way he looked at her was like no one else, like she was his life and passion. Well, she was. Severus had always depended on her for happiness, since no one else was too keen to give him any.

But lately, he had been different. She had seen a difference in his eyes--they were cloudy, dark, and sullen. He was more foreign than usual. And she had found out why. Severus Snape had become a Death Eater. Her thoughts were just too much to handle, and at this point she shut her eyes and tried to take a nap before work.
……

Severus laughed amongst his friends, Malfoy, Macnair, the Lestrange’s. He was at the Malfoy Manner, having dinner with his “pals.” His dark eyes flittered around the room, landing on Miss Bellatrix, recently married to Lestrange. She was beautiful, her dark skin a cool olive and her shiny black hair smooth, plaited down her back. Severus was appalled by her. In fact, he could see that she was the least favorite of his, and she would be a nasty piece of work in the future. Malfoy had his arm around Bellatrix’ sister, Narcissa, and he knew that they were dating. Narcissa, equally as beautiful but much, much different looking than Bellatrix, smiled over at Severus.

“Severus, how’s your arm? I know the Dark Mark hurts,” she said smoothly, her icy voice floating over to him with mellowed tones. He smiled a small smile, but his eyes were alive.

“Very good indeed, though it does sting. A lot more, perhaps, than I had expected, but well…nothing compares to serving our Lord,” he replied with equally cold tones. He was not too fond of Narcissa either. She flipped her silvery blond hair behind her and stood up.

“I will clear the dishes. That bloody house elf can do the actual cleaning. Lucius, dear, when is the next, uh, meeting,” she asked quietly, but not so much that no one else heard. Bellatrix clicked her tongue.

“Cissy, everyone here is well aware of what you are speaking of. No need to sound more important. You aren’t even one of us,” she snapped, a certain evil glee stringing themselves to her words. She smirked with triumph as Narcissa looked dumbstruck.

“Excuse me, Bella, a lady’s place is not with the Dark Lord. You know I don’t app-” she began but Lestrange suddenly stood up.

“Are you calling my wife unladylike?” he asked dangerously, his deep voice hard. Narcissa snarled.

“Of course not; she’s my sister! But I don’t believe in her decisions. Now, if you all will excuse me, I have important matters to deal with,” she finished nastily, shooting her sister the ugliest of looks as she walked out of the dining room and into the kitchen. Lucius chuckled.

“Narcissa is quite hard in her beliefs. At least she is better than your other sister, Bella,” his ton was casual, but his eyes narrowed hatefully. He looked at Bellatrix, a frown on his face. Bellatrix furrowed her eyesbrows in anger and snarled.

“No sister of mine,” she replied back. Severus couldn’t help but laugh, and then she turned sharply to Severus.

“And you’re dating that nasty mudblood, are you?” she accused him, pointing a long finger at him. She looked disgusted, and Severus straightened up in his chair. Lucius raised his eyebrows pointedly.

“Lily Evans. Yes. Is there a problem, Bellatrix?” Severus replied, his voice like a blast of cold air. He glared back at her, not backing down. Bellatrix was nothing, nothing, to be afraid of. He was much cleverer, and more…experienced. Only, he didn’t let anyone(especially his dear Lily) in on these types of things.

“No. of course not. But is the Dark Lord okay with this?” she asked, smiling her horrible smile. Severus couldn’t help but notice that when she smiled she looked less appealing, perhaps due to the fact that several of her teeth were replaced with crusty gold ones.

“He is aware. However, we have an agreement. One which I will kindly not discuss with you, Bellatrix,” he finished, and couldn’t help but feel triumphant as the color drained from her face. He stood up as he glanced at his watch. “I must meet Mulciber…we have more important things to do than to sit here and explain ourselves to the likes of Bellatrix Black.” He chose to say shoot out her old name, not the new one, for it would irritate Bellatrix greatly. He twirled his wand nonchalantly as he strolled from the Manor, leaving Bellatrix in a state of shock, Lucius trying not to burst into laughter, and Lestrange resisting the urge to curse the back of him.

I love Severus and Lily together. Ugh! So much. Anyway, I really like where things are going so far. Lily's finding herself in quite a predicament, huh? Butterfly feelings with Sev AND James. Heh.

I'm thinking James' job may lead to his finding out about Severus, but I suppose I'll have to wait and see. =)

haha awww, thanks. They are my favorite ship. We all know how the story ends, but we don't know what happened in the middle! So I am pretty much having SO MUCH FUN filling in those bits.

Ch. 4- Suspicions


He waited for her to come back today. He needed to apologize…he had been a git…well, he was a git most times. He paced his living room while Sirius lay on his belly on the floor, playing with his owl, Rocky. Rocky would belong to Sirius and be the only owl that actually plays. Sirius laughed heartily as he grabbed Rocky’s wing and flung him into the air; the bird squawked playfully and fluttered around the living room noisily. James, despite being preoccupied with worry, couldn’t help but give a small grin.

There was a knock on the door, and James rushed to open it. He threw it open; Remus Lupin walked in, looking very ragged and older than usual. James groaned in annoyace; seriously, Moony?

“What a welcome, eh?” asked Remus with his eyebrows raised in confusion. “Expecting someone else?”

“Of course he is. Evans,” replied Sirius, going back to playing with Rocky. He threw a pair of rolled up socks at the bird, and Rocky hooted as he hit them back with one of his wings. Rocky then landed on Remus’ shoulder, and Remus chortled as he stroked the enormous bird’s back.

“Lily? I haven’t seen her in ages. Would be nice to see her again. Still rejecting you?” he asked, trying VERY hard not to laugh.

“Of course she is, she’s Evans,” replied Sirius before James could answer. Sirius ran his hand through his overgrown hair and stood up.

“She’s with Severus,” James said softly, looking anywhere but at either of the two’s faces. He strolled over to the window and peered out onto the street…any minute now…

Remus choked. “Severus? Snape? Good Lord…I knew they were close…but…” he trailed off, looking at his friend with pity. James must be dying, being beaten by Snivellus at something. James turned sharply to Remus.

“When is your time of month?” he asked, without realizing what it sounded like. All three men laughed until it hurt, and James couldn’t help but feel much less gloomy.

“Let’s go out! Party! We’re young men, twenty years old, let’s go to that new place opened up in Diagon Alley! I hear it is the place to be for people like us!” suggested Sirius with glee, checking his hair in the hallway mirror. James glanced at Remus, who rolled his eyes.

“Er…No. Not my cup of tea. Plus, my “time of the month” is quite near. I would rather not take any chances…” replied Remus briskly. James just then noticed how raggedy his pal looked.

“Having a hard time finding a job, Moony?” he asked, nudging him on the shoulder. Remus nodded.

“Of course. I could always lie and say I’m not a werewolf, but I hate lying. What if some freak accident were to happen? I just have to put on all my job applications when they ask if there is anything odd worthy of knowing about me that I am a werewolf…” he said simply, sitting at the table and folding his hands on top of it. James nodded, biting his bottom lip. There was a soft knock on the door. James jumped up speedily and raced to the door.

Lily walked in, her dark red hair flowing down her back like a serene waterfall, glistening in the soft light. Her eyes shone out like emeralds against her pale skin, and her cheeks flushed from going up the stairs to get to James’ apartment. She looked stunning. James simply ogled at her, and he envied Severus more than ever at this moment. She smiled as she gave a quick hug and squealed happily when she noticed Remus.

“Remus! Oh my, I haven’t seen you in forever!” she cried excitedly, as he stood up to give her a hug. He smiled back.

“Lily, nice to see you, too. James told me you got a job at St. Mungos…I didn’t know you were interested in being a Healer,” he said as she took a seat across from him. Lily nodded, placing her wand on the table. Sirius wandered into his room, up to something or another. James sat down, rather timidly, next to Lily.

“Oh, yes. And since I’ve got a knack for potions I figured I could help the top researches there--I mean, once I get up to being a Healer. Right now I only have the night shift, shuffling around the place and making sure nothing goes wrong. My co-workers are all rather old, I’m the youngest of the lot, but I enjoy it. I’m off the rest of this week,” she explained to Remus, and he nodded.

“A job’s a job. You’re lucky. I’m trying to get one, but it’s proving hard right about now. The only places that will hire me are stores on Knockturn Alley, and there’s no way I’m working there,” he replied, tapping his fingers on the table. Lily noticed how dirty they were and wondered if he had a place to live. She glanced at James, raising her eyebrows at him, then looked back at Remus’ nails. James blinked back, looking blank. She rolled her eyes. Honestly, what a fool!

“Where are you staying, Remus?” she asked him kindly. Remus’ face fell.

“Well-you see, a very nice place--got a bed and a bath bu-” but he was cut off by James.

“What?! You Don’t have a place to stay! Remus! You could live with us!” he cut him off loudly. He looked angry, outraged. Remus scowled and shook his head.

“No. I’m not a charity case-”

“Remus,” said Lily forcefully, glaring at him with worry. Remus shook his head.

“No, I’m not living here, I wouldn’t be able to pay, and-”

“You can live with us, then, and I can help you get a job with me!” exclaimed Lily, flailing her hands in the air dramatically. Remus crinkled his face in confusion.

“Us? You live with someone?” he asked. James furrowed his eyebrows, a frown appearing on his face.

“Severus…Snape, remember? We started dating right after Hogwarts, and we make three years soon,” she replied, blushing but grinning all the same. Remus forced a smile.

“That’s..er..great, Lily….I’m glad for you! You and Severus get along, then?”

“Yes, yes. But he works during the day, and I work at night, except when I’m off, so we haven’t seen each other too much lately. I’ll see him later tonight, though…” she replied, beaming at the thought. She tucked her hair behind her ear, looking down at her hands in her lap. She didn’t see Remus exchange looks with James. Remus had been hearing rumors…for some time now…

“What does he do? I mean, for a job?” he asked suspiciously, though trying his hardest not to sound accusing. Lily’s eyes froze, her hands tensed. She faked a smile.

“Somewhere at the ministry…I’m not entirely sure where,” she responded nervously. James seemed clueless, but Remus’ brain was ticking, thinking…

After a quick lunch Sirius became bored, again, and suggested that they all went out…again.

“Sirius, you asked earlier, and I told you I can’t go,” Remus replied and looked at his watch. He was waiting for Lily to go. She yawned and stretched.

“I must be going soon…Sev should be back anytime now…” she muttered, also checking her watch. James messed up his hair more and stood up. He held out a hand to help Lily up. Remus looked up at her through caring, worried eyes.

“Lily…”

“Yes?”

“Watch out for Snape”

“What do you mean, Remus?” she asked, her facing turning red. Sirius sensed a rage coming on.

“I’m just warning you. I care about you, Lily. You are a nice person, a genuine person, just…be careful, Lily,” he said darkly, and Lily simply stared at him before walking out the door. James followed her. He placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Lily, I didn’t say anything to him--he just said that all on his own. I don’t even know what he was talking abou-”

“Whatever you say, James. I have to go--I gotta’ see Severus,” she replied briskly, barely giving him a second glance as she jetted away.

OKAY. so I know it's been a month..but my net has been down. and I've had to get on SS on my phone, which is torture, but so is not being on SS! so I've suffered through it! but now that my internet is kind of working again..here is the next chapter!

Ch. 5 - Annoying Lily 101


James walked back into the house feeling glum. He shot a glare in the direction of Remus. Remus stood up, walked over to the window, and watched as Lily went home; she would apparate once in a deserted area.

“Remus, what’d you have to go and upset Lily for? She left yesterday seething at me as well! She’s going to bloody hate my guts…” he raged at Remus, who turned to look at James with worry written across his face.

“I have reason to believe that Severus is a Death Eater,” was the only reply.

“WHAT?!” came a shout from the back room, and Sirius appeared a second later, looking curious. He ran his fingers through his hair and leaned against the wall. “No…”

“I could see it, actually,” James said, scratching his chin in thought. Then his eyes widened, fear penetrating. “Wait…then Lily is in danger!”

“Well, I’m not too sure. I am only guessing. I mean, he has always dabbled with the Dark Arts, she doesn’t know where he works, and he is gone for more than a day at a time…what does that sound like?” Remus thought aloud. He, too, seemed to be in deep thought...it was all too fishy.

“Well we should tell her!” exclaimed James desperately, looking rather panicked. He kept looking from Sirius to Remus, his eyes popping out with fear. Sirius merely rolled his eyes. He stood up straight again and plopped down on the couch. He looked quite unconcerned and began to examine his nails.

“No, she knows. She just isn’t letting us know that…it’s obvious,” he said casually. Both Remus and James turned to stare at him incredulously.

“She doesn’t know…Lily wouldn’t put up with that!” responded James in a very loud, angry voice. He was on the verge of yelling for some reason, as if he felt the need to defend her. Sirius looked up at him and shrugged.

“Suit yourself…”

Remus soon left on the excuse that he had promised to stop by Peter’s house to visit. Sirius absolutely refused to go, and James was in too much of a gloomy mood to go. Peter Pettigrew, a friend of the fellows, still lived with his parents until he had enough saved to buy a place of his own.

James’ head was reeling. What if Snivellus was a Death Eater? What should he tell Lily? She obviously didn’t know…she couldn’t know…Lily wouldn’t put up with that. He sighed, his thoughts drifting to darker images. What if he somehow caused something horrible to happen to her? James’ mind burned with anger. No. I won’t let that happen…I’m in love with Lily…he admitted to himself, his eyes beginning to burn. He told Sirius he was going to his room to think. He slammed his bedroom door behind, fell onto his bed, and closed his eyes. His mind drifted lazily off…doing anything but dwelling on what he had just thought about, what he had just admitted to himself…
….

Severus’ cloak billowed around him as he awaited Mulciber. His old pal from school was almost done doing what they had set out to do for the Dark Lord. Severus checked his watch, wondering what was taking so long. He then heard a high pitched scream, coming obviously from a woman, and then, suddenly, a silence. He sighed, looking quite uncomfortable. He kicked the dirt with his shoe, making a heart with the initials 'S&L.' He smiled at his work of art. He could almost feel his cold heart warming a bit. Mulciber suddenly ran out the house, cackling like a mad man. Severus quickly kicked the heart he had in the dirt and looked up at his fellow Death Eater with an evil grin.

“Got the information?”

“Of course. But the Dark Lord is busy right now…he told me to wait. He must be doing something important…I managed to steal some of her gold,” he replied slyly while jingling a very plump bag of gold. Severus dug his hands into his robe, shivering a bit.

“Let’s go back to my place…share a drink. We’ve accomplished something very good…” he said softly. They apparated to Severus and Lily’s house.

Mulciber waltzed in, eyeing the place with slight distaste. The house was very neat, bright, and cheerful. Pictures of Lily and Severus littered the place, and the home had the smell of apples and cinnamon. Not the place he had previously imagined Severus lived in. Severus sat down at his table and beckoned Mulciber over.

“Split the money in half. Lily will be happy I’ve made some gold…” Mulciber slumped down in his chair. He threw a bag that jangled onto the table. Severus dumped its contents onto the wood surface and counted it carefully. He knew better than to try to trick Mulciber out of money...the guy would kill him in the blink of eye, even if they were friends. Eh, Severus decided he needed new friends. He separated it in half, placing his own pile into his pocket. Mulciber lit a cigar and placed his share back into the bag.

“She‘s yours?” Mulciber asked as he pointed to the nearest picture of Lily. Severus smiled, warmth spreading into his icey eyes. He was pretty sure that his pal had met her before; perhaps he just humoring Severus.

“Yes. Lily.”

“I remember her from Hogwarts. She know?” Know what, exactly, he didn't say aloud, but Severus knew what he meant.

Severus didn’t answer for a long time. Then, “Yes.” Mulciber cackled again.

“Does she know exactly what we do?”

“Well…no,” replied Severus, who was rolling the sleeves of his cloak up. Mulciber began to twirl his wand around his fingers. They said nothing for a long while, Mulciber slowly filling the kitchen up with smoke and Severus staring at the picture of Lily.

Then, quite suddenly, Lily popped into the living room. Severus had jumped up with his wand at the ready, pointed straight at Lily. Mulciber had dropped his own wand, his eyes widened with fear. Her apparation seemed to have scared them.

“Merlin’s knickers, Lily, it was only you,” mumbled Severus, apparently irritated. Lily didn’t smile, or even say hello to Severus. She was staring at Mulciber with a look of pure disgust on her face. Mulciber returned her glare with puffs of steady smoke from his cigar.

“Glass of wine, Lils? Just made some gold,” asked Severus, who poured himself a glass as well as Mulciber. Lily shook her head and eyed the cigar with intense dislike. She strolled into the kitchen and rummaged around the pots and pans. Soon, food was cooking on the stove, her wand stirring a soup. She slumped next to Severus, looking very tired indeed.

“What’d you do all day, Lils?” asked Severus kindly. Mulciber snickered as he blew a cloud of smoke into the air.

“I visited James. He’s been needing help finding a job…don’t start now, Sev,” she snapped, as Severus’ expression became distorted with hatred when James’ name was mentioned. Mulciber clicked his tongue as more smoke clouded the kitchen.

“Scum, blood traitor, he is,” he added in roughly. Lily turned sharply to look at him, her green eyes ablaze.

“Excuse me, but I am a muggle born. If you are going to insult anyone that has any affiliation with muggle borns, I would suggest you to get out of our house. Severus may like you, but I do not,” she said all of this very quickly, and her eyes flickered nervously when she was done. Severus held his breath; he was nervous as well. Mulciber simple chuckled and blew puffs of smoke at her face.

“So sorry to offend,” he apologized, his voice filled with the sound of mocking sarcasm. Lily tensed up.

“Would you put that cigar out, please? It is quite disgusting, which I suppose makes sense that you like them, seeing as your filthy as we-”

“Lily!” shouted Severus, rising out of his seat, his sallow and pale face lined with seriousness. Mulciber was looking quite deadly. He crushed the cigar in his hand, and when he opened his hand the ashes were gone. He stood up, his cloak jingling, and strode to the door.

“Of course, I will oblige you, Evans. I would watch your temper, if I were you, muggle born.” he returned at her, his eyes filled with malice and his voiced oiled like grease. He opened the door, and, just as he was about to walk out, he turned back and added, “And Severus, keep your woman in line.” And with that, he left their house leaving behind a very shocked Severus and a very angry Lily.
