Sometimes it was nice to be alone. This was especially so when you were the youngest and all your siblings were boys of varying degrees of loud, crude and rude. She didn’t mind it most of the time and really she was often in the thick of it but lately she was feeling more and more aware that she was different from them. Not in that whole ‘different bits’ way, but more like she expected something else, something more, and they were just happy being Weasleys.

She wouldn’t be. The only way she’d always be just another Weasley would be if she never got married. As far as Ginny was concerned, the only way she’d never get married would be if something bad happened to him. It wouldn’t. Right? Nothing bad could happen because… well because… because she didn’t want it to. Nobody did. Everyone she knew would sacrifice themselves for him. Her parents, all of her brothers except Percy…

The thought of losing them all and being left a spinster with only Percy for company made her cry. She honked loudly and quite embarrassed by how loud it was, she cast Silencio on herself so that nobody would hear.

Stupid. Boys. Doing. Stupid. Things.

Ginny stomped around the Gryffindor Common Room, all fire and brimstone. She whirled around and her hair flew out behind her, arcing through the air and seeming to crackle and sizzle as if someone had cast flagrate through the air.

“Alright Ginny?” Neville called from his spot on the long couch next to Seamus and Dean. Ginny whirled around again and glared at all three of them. She took in the piles of chocolate frog cards surrounding the three, who were clearly doing a bit of trading.

Honestly! Boys and their priorities!

She glared at them more and Dean and Seamus hurriedly packed away their cards and dragged a still oblivious Neville up to their dorm and more importantly, out of Ginny’s way. She stomped over to the couch they’d just vacated and threw herself into it, talking to herself about ‘Stupid boys’ being ‘bad losers’. She huffed to herself and out of the corner of her eye she spotted an abandoned and unopened chocolate frog.

Ginny opened the box, glared at the card and tossed it into the fire. She nibbled on the chocolate frog as she watched the image of Rowena Ravenclaw burn.

Stupid ‘claws.

The Great Hall was one of those places where Ginny was so sure she’d always be completely comfortable. It was like home, no matter how crowded it was. She had her place at the Gryffindor table and it was a good fit. She belonged there. Okay so sometimes she didn’t quite feel like she was part of things, sometimes Ron and Harry and Hermione sort of talked around her and she truly didn’t have all that much in common with the girls in her year, but nobody could deny she was a Gryffindor through and through, right?

Ginny nodded as someone mentioned double potions first thing in the morning and… ugh… an essay Ginny hadn’t started yet. She leaned forward and banged her head against the table a few times.

“Hello Ginny.”

The voice was all too familiar and she looked up and saw herself reflected in his glasses. She opened her mouth to speak but he interrupted her.

“You have mashed potato on your head.” He reached out a finger and wiped it off.

Jelly legs.

“Coming to practice?”

Ginny nodded and found some words.

“I’ll be… along in a minute.”

You know, when she could walk.

Ginny balled up her dirty Quidditch uniform and tossed it on the floor. Having a mother who wouldn’t stand for it at home made the action infinitely more satisfying. It was only a moment before a house elf appeared and scooped her clothes up to take them away to launder, but Ginny had already forgotten her uniform in favour of climbing into the shower. The water felt good and when Ginny stepped out and wrapped a fluffy towel around her body, she felt much better.

The good feeling lasted until a terrible stench reached her nose and she looked around desperately for a window only to see they were all closed and there were stink bombs throughout the locker room. Desperately, Ginny fled, managing to scoop up her wand as she coughed and spluttered for freedom. She ran out the door and right into Colin Creevy and his camera.

Flash!

Ginny dropped her towel in surprise, still spluttering from the stench of the stink bombs.

Towel pooling around her ankles, she gasped in outrage.

A furious Ginny flicked her wand at him.

“OBLIVIATE!”

She glared at his blank face and jerked the camera from his unresisting hands.

:: CHRISTMAS MINI-CHALLENGE

It would take a long time, Ginny knew, before she’d be good enough at knitting to be able to keep up the Weasley Christmas tradition of lettered sweaters for all of the Weasley children and their friends. The problem was, not only did she still not have the knack for keeping her knitting needles clacking merrily away, but there were infinitely more sweaters to make. Lets see now… Harry and herself, her father and her brothers of course, oh and their wives because there was no way Ginny was going to wear a sweater and look like an idiot alone, Victoire, Rose, Hugo, James, Albus, Lily, Dominique, Louis, Molly, Lucy, Fred, Roxanne and… all of their friends.

Impossible task! She hadn’t really thought about what she’d gotten herself into when she’d agreed to it. Currently, Ginevra was sitting in the centre of the living room, balls of wool piled around her in mountainous heaps and knitting needles held in her hands. A thought occurred to her quite suddenly. She’d seen her mother knit by hand and she’d just assumed that was the way she was supposed to do it too, but she’d also seen her mother use…
“A knitting charm!”

There had only been one unbreakable vow Ginevra Weasley ever intended to make and today was the day she’d finally get to make it. Today was the day that she could finally stop holding her breath and start looking at Harry like it was a beginning instead of an ending. It had always felt like an ending before, like a string of goodbyes and inevitablilty.

Not today though, today Ginny thought about her name. Ginevra Weasley would be left behind, fondly remembered but never again reclaimed. She breathed in sharply and let her hands trail down, fingers dripping like raindrops as far as her hands could stretch and her hands floated through the air and came to rest on her shoulders where the red of her hair bled into the white of her robes. She was ethereal and incomplete.

The soon-to-be Ginny Potter decided the only thing keeping her on the ground was the luxurious weight of her hair, heavy around her shoulders. Which moment would make her real again? The ring? Those words? The kiss?
She floated up the aisle and had to blink through her veil. Ginny could have sworn that Harry’s feet weren’t touching the ground either.

She could feel it in there doing its thing, whatever that was. Ginny lay on her side and prodded at it with her wand, wincing slightly when she jabbed too hard and the thing jabbed back with some unidentifiable part of itself. It felt… strange. But good.

She was smiling at it even though she didn’t know what it was. That was the only thing she got frustrated about lately. Harry wanted it to be a surprise for both of them but Gin needed to know.

If only there were a way for her to figure out what it was without Harry knowing about it. How could she start influencing Harry to choose the names she liked if she didn’t know if the thing inside of her was a boy creature or a girl creature?

With great effort, Ginny rolled onto her back and let out a noise to let everyone know there was a heavily pregnant woman imitating an orca in residence. She irritably wondered if SpeRevelio would work.

Harry soon appeared in the doorway and smiled tenderly at Ginny where she had beached herself.

Sigh.

She could wait to know, but a hand up would be nice.

The Great Hall was almost empty now, the decorations for the Yule ball were wistfully waving goodbye at the students as they trickled out of the hall. It was fitting really, everything looked like ice but the magic of it was melting. Bits of streamers and discarded serviettes lay crumpled on the floor, and Ginny had to kick them away as she swayed with Neville to a half-hearted wrock ballad.

Ginny felt bad for being surprised that Neville could dance. She’d had a great time for most of the night and it felt good to really have fun without a care in the world, but it didn’t mean she had to like seeing Harry with someone else and then end up just sitting there moping. Honestly! What was there to mope about? It was all his fault and…

Ginny decided to focus on enjoying the last drippy little moments of the ball.

“Ginny?” Neville stopped swaying and fumbled for his wand.

What on earth was he trying to do?

“Or-orchideous.”

Neville conjured a sad looking flower and solemnly handed it to Ginny.

She tucked it behind her ear and hid a smile.

“Thank you, Neville.”

“Smile, okay?”

She laughed instead.

Ginny knew that Harry could dance; she’d seen him dance years ago at the Yule Ball. Not with her obviously, but still! Hands on her hips and a determined glint in her eyes, Ginevra soon-to-be-Potter listened to Harry explain quite earnestly why he did not want to dance at the wedding reception. She nodded at every point he made and at every excuse that tumbled from his tongue but still her foot tapped impatiently and her jaw tensed. She was having none of it.

Harry trailed off, realising that his fiancée was giving him what he was coming to recognise as looks.

“What if something happens and I can’t dance? You know, maybe I’ll get injured on the job?” Harry paused and gave her a hopeful look.

Ginny snorted. He’d better not do something stupid on purpose just because he didn’t want to dance at their wedding.

“If you don’t want to, I guess I’ll just have to make you.” Ginny tapped her wand, giving him a hint.

“Tarantallegra?” Harry guessed.

Ginny broke into a triumphant little jig.

“Alright, I’ll dance.” Harry agreed and leaned forward to kiss her cheek.
“And enjoy it?”

“And try to enjoy it.”

Ginny was an expert at this whole business now; every year around this time, her family made an effort to hide the presents they’d bought for her, and every single year she found them and poked and prodded at them gleefully.

The trick was in the preparation. First Ginny narrowed down the possible locations by ‘cleaning out’ cupboards, adding sneaky charms here and there which might tell her if anything new found its way into the places she’d already looked. Then she’d bribe her children with sweets, prying for hints about size and shape.

It was easier if she could do her snooping during the day, but this year they were watching her constantly. So it was that Ginevra Weasley found herself getting up in the middle of the night and sneaking down the stairs to begin her search.

At least that was the plan.

In reality she tripped over the edge of the rug, knocked over the Christmas tree and managed to tug all the baubles and tinsel down in a pile around her

She lay there in the dark and heard Harry’s sleepy voice a moment later from the top of the stairs.

“Next time Gin, try Muffliato.”
