3. Transfiguration

Severus set erect at his desk and changed the button into a beetle and back again, wordlessly. His neighbour struggled with it, but Severus was bored. He turned in his seat and, seeing that McGonagall was busy, he nonchalantly transfigured Nott's button.

"Whoa! I did it!"

*zap*

"Aww.." Nott was deflated by his failure.

*zap*

"Now.. what the-?"

"Ten points to Slytherin, Mister Snape. And while I admire your control and ability to use wandless magic, it would be a better help to your friend if you helped him with proper incantation, rather than messing about."

"Yes, Professor," he croaked.

4. Ancient Runes

"One cannot ignore the runes, Severus," Sybill breathed.

"Oh I think one can, if one tries hard enough, Sybill." Severus sipped his coffee, leaning against the wall beside the staff lounge door.

Flitwick sat in a big squashy chair beyond, holding in his giggles.

"This morning, the fates told me that you would acquire a secret admirer. Now I wouldn't dare mention it without being certain, so I consulted the runes immediately..." she trailed off, staring into her cup as Pomona entered the room.

Severus smiled politely to her. Pomona fiddled with a curl behind her ear and smiled back.

5. Astronomy

He'd always loved astronomy, relishing the quiet time on the rooftop. It was a serene and almost holy experience, communing with the heavens. Now he glanced up at them for guidance, his mentor and friend on his knees in front of him. Somewhere, deep inside, he cried out.

How dare you ask this of me?

Albus' eyes were piercing and severe, though tired. The children, Severus... you must protect Draco. Don't lose him.

Severus could feel the eyes of the others on his back. No. I can't--

This is the only way. We all die. "Severus... please."

7. Care of Magical Creatures

Professor Kettleburn looked barely old enough to teach, much less to be experienced with so many creatures. Care of Magical Creatures was never Severus' best subject. Most animals despised him. He was interested today, though.

Kettleburn nursed his arm, burned in last week's lesson on ashwinders. It had been a good lesson, despite the fire. Today, he looked very confident as he unveiled a cage bearing a baby acromantula. Severus leaned closer, pondering the value of the venom, if it was mature enough. He expected it to hiss or reach, but it skittered to the back of the cage, afraid.

8. Potions

The words of his first Potions lesson's speech poured seductively from his mouth. They would admire him and fear him at the same time. He relished in the fact that he had power over them all. He would mould them to be good students like he was. He would frighten them into behaving properly and they would fear the day he caught them acting like Black and Pot--

They would hate him and his venomous glare. They would whisper about his past and vow never to go down that road. They would never make those mistakes. Professor Snape promised it.

93. Chicken

James' head snapped up from the table.

"YOU WHAT?"

Sirius laughed. "You should see your face, Pro--"

"Are you flippin' serious, Pads? What the hell were you thinking?"

"What? He's chicken, Prongs. No WAY he'll..."

"Once again you're thinking about yourself instead of others, Sirius. You don't get it." James' voice dropped to a whisper. "Moony would never forgive you if something happened. Never. Snape could die, Sirius. Or worse." James got up to leave.

Sirius paled. "He's a chicken Slytherin, Prongs. He won't-"

"I should transfigure you into a chicken..." James' voice followed him through the portrait hole.

44. Ford Anglia

Severus irritably surveyed the damage to the tree. Poor Pomona would have a bird when she found out. It would take a lot of work to nurse it to full health.

His memory haunted him and he shivered, blaming the cold wind. He heard the rattling of the Ford Anglia heading off into the forest. Leave it to Weasley, crashing an enchanted car. That boy was plain stupid.

A-ha! Potter and Weasley were there, noses pressed against the glass, watching the feast. Stupid, stupid boys... He would suggest their expulsion, though deep down he knew Albus would never support it.

9. Defence Against the Dark Arts

Bella couldn't question his loyalty much anymore, though it cost him dearly. Narcissa had him by the short hairs and he had to babysit her idiot son. Not only this, but Albus had already forced him to make several unfortunate promises and it would take days to properly prepare his stores for his former potions master.

He would have to adequately prepare Potter and keep Draco out of trouble, knowing well what is often said about good intentions.

He packed his trunk with a heavy heart. He finally had the teaching post he wanted and it would be so short-lived.

11. History of Magic

Severus wrote his essay about the Goblin Rebellion of 1612 in the library, alone. He chose an easy one; his sense of self-preservation precluded him ever asking a housemate for any help, not that he needed it much. Still, no one ever did well in History of Magic though. Binns truly was the most boring lecturer to have lived or died.

The Hog's Head in Hogsmeade was the Goblin Rebel Headquarters for this particular rebellion. Severus was intrigued by hushed talk about that place, and had a weird feeling he'd come to visit it more than once in his future.

28. Timeturner
"Hmmph!"

"You have something to say about this, Severus?" Minerva fixed her gaze on him. She'd always known how to intimidate him when he was new, but not now.

"Miss Granger doesn't need any more academic anxiety." He caught Minerva opening her mouth. "Yes, she is brilliant and can handle it. But she's bother enough without getting her all excited about timeturning to a squillion lessons."

He locked eyes with Albus, who nodded slowly.

"I'm letting her have it," he said, and adjourned the meeting.

"I'm going to wax your behind in quidditch this term, too," Minerva said, smiling devilishly.

12. Charms

"Head erect."

"It is erect. Any more erect and it'll disengage from my neck." Severus winced apologetically. "No offense," he added, sneering less.

"None taken," Sir Nicholas replied, floating back and forth in front of him. "Now, walk with purpose and smile. That's most important. Smile like she's the only one in the room."

"Have you ever seen me smile?"

"Do you want charm lessons or not? If you want the girl..." Nick turned and gasped. "Oh dear me. No, don't smile. She'll think you'll eat her. Now, speak to her."

"Good morning, Pomona."

"Well ... stunning elocution."

"Shut up."

13. Quidditch

"Sixteen galleons, are you mad, Severus? What makes you think you'll win?" Minerva sipped her tea to hide the smirk on her face. He could see her confidence oozing. Potter and his little Nimbus wouldn't be a problem this term, though she didn't know it yet.

"Call it a hunch," he said dryly, shaking his small, leather bag of coins. Malfoy spent a lot of money to get his brat on the team, and at least Severus would be able to knock Minerva down a peg. There was no way Slytherin could lose, this term.

"You're on."

How sweet, revenge.

14. Hogwarts, A History

There should be a law against how many times a student could check out a book, especially when he knew that Granger already owned a copy. It just isn’t healthy, he told himself as he looked at the card on Irma’s desk.

Truthfully, he was irked that Granger knew the history of thisvolume. He was irritated, knowing that she’d seen this card that only had her own name written repeatedly on the backside. He knew she’d have seen the other side of this card. He turned it over and considered hexing it clean.

34. Parseltongue

Severus, startled, dropped his coffee cup and cursed loudly. He looked sideways at Albus and stooped to clean up. He’d known all along!

“My only surprise was that you didn’t tell me sooner that you knew.”

“Frankly Albus, I didn’t know sooner.” Severus lied. He lowered his voice. “I don’t make a habit of peeking into my students’ heads, Albus; especially Potter. I don’t care if he can talk to snakes. I doubt he’s behind the attacks.”

“As do I. Still, we’ll have to watch him closely too. He might be in danger.”

“As always,” Severus muttered as Albus left.

16. Dragonhide gloves

He hefted the huge pot onto the greenhouse table and watched as Pomona pruned some brown leaves and carefully put them in the envelope he’d brought. Her fingers curled deftly around the fanged blossoms, rubbing the petals slightly to placate the carnivorous plant.

Dragonhide gloves never looked so good; smooth pink skin of a chubby arm peeking between the cuff and her sleeve…

He gasped and reminded himself never to inhale too deeply near Hermione Granger’s cauldron during lessons again. If her Friendliness potion did this, he’d hate to see how smelling a more serious potion might affect him.

15. Broom

Speed… flight… chaos… fright…

The Dark Lord was chasing, he could tell. Severus hovered on his broom, aware that he needn’t continue chasing Arthur and the imposter now bleeding behind him. He felt grateful that it wasn’t a more serious wound. He’d shown intent though, and that’s what mattered. No one could say he was going easy on Potter or the Order. He calculated in his mind, the preparations he’d made on Albus’ orders. Providing Potter gets away tonight, as he must do… Severus still needed to see to other matters.

Why the sword? Why had Albus kept that secret?

22. Kneazle

“Is that Hermione’s kneazle?” Lupin asked, taking the flask from him. Severus glanced over his shoulder at Crookshanks, who eyed Lupin warily. Severus smirked.

“Damned thing is following me around today. As if I had anything to do with letting Black break into Gryffindor Tower,” he said, loudly for the cat’s benefit. “What about you, Lupin? Feeling a little… nostalgic, are you?” He looked deeply into Lupin’s eyes for some betrayal.

“Don’t go there, Severus. Black is no longer any friend of mine, you must know that.” Lupin warned, hurt.

“Time will tell.” He turned on his heel and departed.
