Family Reunions

The gray clouds forming above Rose’s head didn’t look all too promising. School hadn’t even started and the prospect looked bad. Merlin, she hadn’t even set foot inside the Burrow. Whose idea was it anyhow to gather up the family a day before seeing off the kids at King’s Cross? The thought, though irritatingly pointless, was shaken out of Rose’s mind as her mum’s voice reached her ears.

“Rosie! Looks like it’s about to rain. Come inside, dear,” she called.

Taking her eyes off the dark swirling sky, Rose obliged. Her grandparents’ home was indeed extremely cozy. The warmth was always a welcome sensation in the beginnings of autumn’s coolness. As if by default, Rose knew the exact lodgings of every family member present. Three boys in the first bedroom, three boys in the next, and all five girls in the largest bedroom.

Three, two, one…

“Rosie!”

Rose forced a smile at the unanimous shout. Here came the comments and musings of how big she had grown, how pretty she had gotten, how they all remembered when she was just baby.

“Look who’s here!” came the sarcastic voice of her cousin, one James Potter.

Rose wanted to disapperate.

The Scamanders

“First years this way!”

Rose snapped up her head as she hopped off the Hogwarts Express at the familiar sound of Roxanne. She caught a glimpse of her cousin, the prefect, helping direct tentative first years in the direction of the boats that would take them to Hogwarts for the first time. That was Rose last year.

“Hey, Rosie!”

Rose turned her attention away from the first years and followed Albus toward the carriages. Her parents had told her they were pulled by thestrals. Suspiciously eyeing the front of the carriage where the invisible creatures undoubtedly stood waiting to pull them away, Rose climbed up after Albus.

“Hello, you two.”

Rose froze. The carriage already contained two passengers. One was a boy with light brown hair and gray eyes. The other looked nearly exactly the same.

Jelly legs…

She knew that Lysander was the one sitting on the right. He was smiling at her.

#21 Langlock

Library Adventures

Rose stepped into the peaceful, near silence of the library and walked the route that she knew by heart to the section on Charms. It seemed it had been where she spent half her time lately, what with all the homework and such. But Rose was glad for the calmness of the library. Mostly otherwise, she would be with Albus, visiting their favorite places in the castle, discovering new ones, and, well, dodging James.

“Hi, Weasley.”

Rose hid her frown behind the pages of The Standard Book of Spells as she glanced up at the speaker. Having befriended the blonde late in their first year, she really had expected him to have moved on from referring to her by her last name.

She rarely ever really spoke to him. He kept to his closer friends; he obviously wasn’t in Gryffindor. To Rose, he might as well have been jinxed with permanent langlock.

And to be completely honest, he was a bit like what she had heard her dad say his father had been like. Maybe it was her way of rebelling; befriending him, that is.

“Hello, Scorpius,” Rose said pleasantly, setting down her book.

#28 Nox

Invisible Curiosity

The bluish-white glow emanating from the tip of Rose's wand seemed to float through forest as she stepped lightly over various stones and emerging tree roots. The sound of soft footfalls and a dim silhouette before her gave Rose a small sense of security. Albus was still leading the way through the darkness. Rose waved her wand behind her. Scorpius was still here too.

"Oof!" Rose had the wind knocked slightly out of her as she ran straight into Albus, who had abruptly paused.

He shushed her and glanced at Scorpius. "We here?"

The blond nodded. "They're over by that group of trees," he said, pointing. Then he frowned at Rose. "I don't think they like your light."

Rose's heartbeat quickened. "Nox," she uttered hastily. The stars above their heads illuminated little in her line of sight. Sometimes she really wished she could see the thestrals.

"Let's go," she said nervously. "You can't even see them, Albus."

She sensed Albus turn to her, and she pictured the incredulous look upon his face. She sighed as she felt him leave her side and heard his footsteps lead away toward the thestrals. Being curious about invisible creatures was difficult to deal with.

#12 Furnunculus

Well, This is Embarrassing…

Second years weren’t allowed to go to Hogsmede, not quite yet. What to do, what to do? Rose paced the floor of her dormitory. It wasn’t like her to stay behind and purposefully be late for class, much less be wasting the time away in the dormitory rather than in the common room reading or studying. Albus had seen it happen, and Scorpius had offered the solution.

“Easy for you to say,” Rose had said, pouting. The boils on her face were the all-too-clear evidence of the scuffle over the Marauder’s Map. That was the last time she tried to help James in any of these kinds of encounters.

“If you won’t ask a teacher for Boil-Cure Potion, and James won’t buy anything in Hogsmede to help, why don’t you ask someone else?” Scorpius said.

Rose paused. And thought. She imagined asking Lysander. Nah.

Presently, the sound of chattering emerged from the common room. Classes were over. She pulled out her wand and made her way down, twisting it in her hands. Revenge would be sweet.

“Furnunculus,” Rose whispered at James.

#8 Diffindo

Miscommunication

It was a particularly gray day. The weather seemed to be going along well with Rose’s mood. A sort of sixth sense had told her not to get out of bed that morning. But that was ridiculous, of course. There was no way she was missing classes. Then what happened? Frankly, Bacchus Davis happened.

Rose wasn’t a vengeful person, no. She was much too sophisticated to take any notice of the usual string of insults. But now, eyes trained on the back of the Slytherin’s head as she walked through the halls, she realized her chance for the perfect revenge after nearly two years of his bullying.

“Scorpius,” she whispered. “Could you use diffindo?”

She pointed to Davis’ bag, indicating where she wanted him to cast the charm. Meanwhile, Rose would be practicing the charm on Davis’ unsightly long and greasy-looking hair. Albus gave her a premature reprimanding look, and Scorpius gave her one of slight confusion, but Rose counted to three quietly.

RIIIIIP!

Rose felt the color rising in her cheeks as her books thudded on the ground and people stopped to stare at her. Scorpius gave her a sheepish smile. “I meant at Davis, not me!” she hissed.

#20 Knitting Charm

Nargles

Rose shifted in her armchair over closer to the fire and held up the item in her hand to the light. It was a red and gold scarf, unfinished with tassles on the one end.

She scrutinized her handiwork. She was no whiz at the knitting charm, but one thing was sure; she was better than her mother. Rose could recall her father’s account of the tiny hats her mother once tried to make for the house elves. She had giggled along with her father, but deep down inside she knew what was right.

She was going to free as many elves as she could, darn it!

Albus had told her she was daft, but Rose didn’t care. She shifted again and resumed work on the scarf. The red and gold were anything but an original color pairing, but she thought it would just be easier using Gryffindor colors anyway. They might blend in with the surroundings better.

The next day, Rose walked downstairs to find all her hard work had mysteriously disappeared. Lysander told her that Nargles were probably behind it.
