SS 25: Elinor Danvers

This collection of flashbacks for my Ministry character are my own creation,
otherwise the world of Harry Potter belongs entirely to J.K. Rowling. They
are happy and sad moments, about her and the people close to her, but each
one is significant to her life in one way or another. They are insights into why
she is who she is, why she thinks how she thinks, and why she does what she
does. Since the character of Nigel Garretson weighs heavily on these
moments, I would like to thank S.S. member Macavity for doing
more for Elinor than I ever could have. I could never take credit for owning
such an ingenious character as Mr. Garrettson, and I would like to make that plain.

Try - Pink

He would never love her. How could he? Why should he? She
had allowed herself to fall for him, something she should not
have let happen.

The silence pressed in on her as she stared down at the little
piece of blank parchment laid out on the table. A crazy notion
had come over her to invite him to see her. Now she was not
so sure.

She couldn't ignore it anymore. She had the choice to shut it
out, shut him out, or to try, no matter how frightened she was
of failing.

Elinor slowly reached for the quill.

Waiting On The World To Change - John Mayer

As much excitement and adventure as she had had during her
time as a private eye, it had cost her too much. There was
more out there, good things and bad. There were so many things
going on in the world, things that someone had to take care of.

A desk job had always frightened Elinor. To her, not much could
be done behind papers. But she had attended a forensics college,
after all. She was more than qualified for Ministry work, she
thought. She could still fight crime, in a different way.
Perhaps it was time to change vocations.

Time - Pink Floyd

Where had all the time gone? Elinor stood in the middle of her
living room and stared about her. This was what she had to
show for her life. An empty apartment, an empty life. She clasped
one hand over her mouth and her eyes suddenly welled with
hot tears.

How can you say empty, she thought. You have Nigel. You aren't
alone.

But she was, at the end of the day. She always came home to
the emptiness, the silence, the loneliness. She had let time slip
away. She had waited too long. No one can change the past.

Letters From the Sky - Civil Twilight

Unlike most students at Hogwarts, she never saw the
appeal of being an Auror, or working with the Ministry. Elinor
wasn't sure of what she wanted as a career, and her professors
kept pressuring her. But one thing she wanted was the person
who wasn't pressuring her.

If she didn't hurry, she was going to be late meeting him.
She scribbled down the last of her Potions notes, then tucking
them away.

"Thanks, Nigel," she said softly, so as not to interrupt his
own deep concentration. She passed the textbook back to him
before rushing from the common room.

Only To Bring You Back - Paul Alan

She watched as the shopkeeper attended to the wizard
ahead of her in line. The way his green eyes were unseeing, his
words were distant and... almost cold. There was something
about him that was resigned, perhaps defeated. Or maybe he
was completely unaware that he had accepted an indifferent
role in life.

As she set her purchases on the counter, she politely
smiled at him, and he returned barely a nod. Maybe there was
something she could do for him. Some way to help him. He was
not happy, that much was clear to her. She knew from
experience.

Hello - Evanescence

The door shut behind her with a harsh snap, and then
there was silence. After all was said and done today, she had
insisted, unwisely, on being alone. And now she had her wish,
a cruel realization. He was gone, and he was never coming back.
Elinor looked around her and at last felt the reality sink in. He
was dead. And she was alone. It frightened her, but there was
nothing she could do, no one to turn to. There was no one to
come home to anymore. No one to look forward to. No one…
at all… anymore.

Halo - Beyonce

It was too much. How was he ever to know just how
she felt about him? Elinor had at last come to terms with her
feelings for Nigel, and they overwhelmed her. No doubt they
would overwhelm him. How could she try to explain herself
without frightening him? How could she justify how much she
needed him in her life?

He had this light to him, this brightness that he brought
to her. He was everything to her, a feeling Elinor didn't know
quite what to do with. She would do anything for him, anything
at all. She was his.

1940 - The Submarines

…Something’s wrong when you regret; things that haven’t
happened yet… The radio played on softly as Elinor waited
in the corner of the muggle café, sipping on a pumpkin spice
tea and looking at the Prophet, which she had hidden behind
a muggle newspaper. A glance at her watch told her that her
source was late, but finally he arrived, settling himself at the
table, passing over a large envelope. She tore into it, pulling
out a thin stack of glossy photographs. There he was. The
man who had killed her husband. He was here. And she
would find him.

Teeth gritted and jaw set, Elinor had not done a grand
job of calming herself before arriving. But she didn’t
care, and forgave herself instantly, pushing past Chester
into the house. Elinor sought her out with a heated
intensity that peaked the instant she laid eyes on her
mother.
“What is wrong with you?!” She shouted across
the marble countertop. The letter clutched in her hand
was slammed down between them. “What makes you
think this is okay?! I love him, and I will not let
you do this! What must I do?! Let it go!
I am not you!”

Rescue Me - Rihanna

She kept catching herself gazing out of the
windows in the office and looking at the clock. I’ll
bet he doesn’t have this problem , she thought,
forcing herself back to the paperwork on her desk.
Her eyes skimmed over the words without reading
them, and finally, at the bottom of the page, she
signed her name and set the parchment aside. Lost
in thought, she stared for several minutes before
realizing the mistake she had made. She cursed quietly
and, with a sigh, corrected the major spelling error in
her last name, which she had signed “Elinor Garrettson.”
Again.

Make Your Own Kind of Music - Mama Cass

The lab worker beamed down at the set of equipment
she had spread out before her. For no particular reason
other than her zeal for her job had she practically danced
into her laboratory this morning, and for no other reason
was she nearly singing aloud as she doused DNA swabs
in various chemicals. She slipped slides under her microscope
like slipping records onto a record player. She envisioned
that the lab coat around her could have been a beautiful
dress by the way it made her feel. And her laboratory—
her laboratory was like an unorthodox ballroom. A home.

“N-Nigel?” She stopped him, reaching out one hand and
lightly grasping the fabric of his sleeve as he turned to
leave. A feeling of regret washed over her, but she had
already stopped him. She had to say something, feeling
his concerned gaze.
“Don’t go,” she implored. I’m so pathetic. “Don’t…
I…” Elinor sucked in a breath, shuffling the words together.
“I don’t want to be alone. I’m so tired of being alone at the
end of every day.” It was something she always thought,
but had never told him. Now that she had said it, it sounded
so pitiful.

A Christmas Song - Jethro Tull

“Nothing”, he had said to her. Her heart had broken just
a little for him. But she enjoyed watching his curious smile
when she asked him to ‘be ready’, and told him nothing
more. Her mind was made up. This year, she had someone
new to spend Christmas with. The others would get on
without her, but Nigel had no one. She made her way down
the dimly lit corridor, a large box in her hands. Elinor
knocked. Then there he was. The person with whom Christmas
would never be complete without. She beamed at him.
“Happy Christmas, Nigel.”
