14. Hogwarts, A History

Ron Weasley was truly bored. He had finally taken Hermione up on reading ‘Hogwarts, A History’. He would never dream of admitting it to her, but parts of it were actually quite interesting. He was currently reading a fascinating account of the four founders and the creation of Hogwarts. Ron still had a hard time believing that Slytherin and Gryffindor had been best mates.

‘Salazar Slytherin, friend of Godric Gryffindor, accepted only those students of great cunning and who were pure of blood. Despite his mistrust of muggles (and contrary to popular belief) he did not wish muggles any harm.’

11. History of Magic

Ron was really absorbed in his reading now. ‘While it is rumored that Slytherin created a secret chamber within the school which supposedly houses a monster that would purge the school of all those unworthy to study magic (muggleborns), there was never any indication that he actively sought to destroy muggles who left well enough alone and did not darken the doors of Hogwarts.’

If History of Magic had been anything like this, Ron supposed he might have paid more attention. The history of Slytherin was rather enthralling. Perhaps Salazar Slytherin wasn’t such a nutter after all… or maybe so.

36. Muggle

Ron scanned ahead looking for more information on the Chamber of Secrets but, apparently this was just a passing reference. He hadn’t gotten to the part about Slytherin and Gryffindor’s big falling out, yet. ‘The four founders scouted out a place far from the prying eyes of muggles and set up their school. Between the four of them they were able make the castle unplottable and protect it from attack by other wizards. It was Slytherin who added most of the anti-muggle precautions after he came across several just passing through the area. He mistrusted them even more than wizards.’

48. Leprechaun

Hermione came in before Ron had finished the section on Slytherin. “You aren’t done yet?”

“No, I’m not,” Ron replied. “Do you reckon Slytherin must have been a leprechaun?”

“What are you going on about?”

“Slytherin. How come they’re green? Do you reckon Slytherin was a leprechaun?” Ron asked again.

Hermione gave Ron an exasperated look. “I expect it just happened to be his favorite color.”

“You mean you don’t know? It’s not here in the book?” he said, gasping with feigned shock.

“Keep reading, Ronald,” Hermione said, rolling her eyes and leaving.

Ron started up again, ‘Salazar Slytherin…’

34. Parseltongue

‘Salazar Slytherin is likely the most famous parselmouth of our time,’ Ron read, snorting a little. He knew better. Not only was You-know-who a parselmouth, but so was Harry and they had to be at least as famous as Slytherin. Of course, in Ron’s opinion, only Harry wasn’t a nutter. Even that was debatable at times, too.

Ron let out a derisive “duh” as he continued reading. ‘A parselmouth, as most people know, is a wizard who can converse with snakes in the snake language referred to as Parseltongue. That is why the symbol of Slytherin house is a serpent.’

35. Pureblood

‘Though not always the case today, due to the mixing of wizard and muggle blood in order to prevent wizards from dying out, Slytherin house has historically been home to only those of pureblood decent. Slytherin was highly suspicious of muggles and feared that muggleborns would lead to the corruption and destruction of the magical world. Despite their differences on this point however, Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor were the best of friends. By allowing each of the founders to choose students for their houses, strife and discord among them on which students to admit was kept to a minimum.’

44. Ford Anglia

Ron yawned. This was interesting but, starting to get dull. “You aren’t finished, yet?” asked an astonished voice from the doorway.

“Nope. As fascinating as Slytherin was, his chapter is starting to drag. This reading thing is starting to be as fun as driving Dad’s old Ford Anglia into the whomping willow.”

“Knowing about Slytherin could give us insight into Voldemort.”

“Just because he’s a descendant of Slytherin and was in the nutter’s house doesn’t mean learning about Slytherin is going to help us out all that much. The only things they have in common are Parseltongue and pureblood mania.”

I’m switching tactics here. Ron may or may not be reading again. He got bored. tee hee In the meantime, I’ll drabble the way Jan intended- completely independent stories.
2. Muggle Studies

Salazar was in a foul temper, spitting and muttering under his breath as he stalked back down the corridor after a conversation with his ‘friends’. Students quickly scattered out of his way, not wanting to incur the wrath of Hogwarts’ most moody and easy to anger head. “How dare they…?” he spluttered to one in particular, throwing open the door to his classroom so that it crashed into the wall, splintering slightly, weakened as it was from the frequency of such openings.

He could not believe their gall. Muggle studies? “MUGGLE studies?” he shouted the question to the empty classroom.

79. author's choice: The Chamber of Secrets

His plan was nearing completion. His arguments with Godric were getting more frequent and escalating toward violence. Salazar had to ensure that everything was in place before he was forced to leave Hogwarts.

It was the perfect plan. He had managed, behind the backs of his friends, to create a chamber deep beneath the school, placing the entrance in a bathroom. He left no trace of what he had done except a small serpent on the side of a tap. No one would be able to enter unless they were a Parselmouth, a rare gift passed down through his line.

93. Chicken

The toad croaked in its cage as Salazar left his office wearing a heavy cloak. It was the dead of winter but, he had to go straight away. He hurried to the village where the farm witch said she would give him one of her prized, fertilized, eggs. He had seen her stock and new the cock which had fathered this particular egg was quite the fighter.

He wrapped the egg in a warm blanket with a heating charm upon it and returned to the castle as quickly as he could. He placed the egg beneath the toad and smiled.

95. Snowball

It seemingly came out of nowhere. He had been walking up the path to the school and suddenly, WHAM! He’d been hit in the side of the head by a giant snowball. Where just a few minutes before there was raucous laughter and numerous students, now there stood just one with his mouth hanging open in horror, frozen to the spot.

Salazar slowly turned his icy, serpentine, glare on the student. He said nothing, merely pointing a long finger toward the door. Once the student had fled through the door, Salazar used a charm to dry his face and shoulders.

We’re going to revisit Ron again for this one and I dedicate this drabble to Touz.

98. Pajamas

After putting on PJs, Ron went into the bathroom. He was carrying Hermione’s trusty book with him. He sat down on the commode and was about to start reading again when a piece of paper slipped out. He burst out laughing and was glad he was on the toilet or he would have embarrassed himself. ‘A little known fact about Salazar Slytherin is that he favored wearing women’s pajamas. Apparently that cold exterior was just an act and he really did prefer pink bunnies to snakes, as evidenced by the bunny slippers found in a trunk emblazoned with Slytherin’s crest.’

75. Yodel

“Another detention tonight?” Godric commented with a chuckle. No one gave out more detentions than Salazar. The poor children that weren’t in his house were petrified of the man. It amused Godric to no end that, as cranky as Salazar got with students, he insisted on giving them detentions so that he’d have to spend more time with them.

“Yes,” Salazar spat, sounding as irritated as he had been when someone from Helga’s house had blown up one of the dungeon classrooms during a potions lesson.

“What was it this time?” Godric bravely asked.

“Yodelling during my nonverbal incantations lecture.”

The Ern picked this number.

87. Plaid

A toad croaked and Salazar looked up just as a crack resounded in the office. He leapt from his chair and ran to the cage. The toad croaked again and it was forcefully pushed off the egg. Salazar’s eyes widened as the thick serpent began to leave the shell, its eyes fixed upon the toad. In the blink of an eye, the toad was no more.

“Coooooold,” the serpent hissed after swallowing the toad.

Salazar looked around and grabbed the first thing he could find to wrap the infant basilisk: a plaid handkerchief Godric had left behind on the desk.

I dedicate this one to Lissy, though Cass picked the number.

10. Arithmancy

He abhorred divination. Ancient Runes and Arithmancy weren’t much better in his opinion, either. But, he supposed the others were right and they needed to allow such subjects to be taught at their school in order to round out the curriculum and provide students more opportunities for learning.

But, it was with great trepidation and skepticism that Salazar stepped into the meeting room where the interview would be held. The candidate saw smiling in his seat but, immediately stood when Salazar entered the room. “So, you’re the ‘one’. So nice to meet you,” Matthias Wenlock beamed with a hand extended.

8. Potions

“What is this supposed to be?” Salazar asked the quivering student sitting before him in his office. He looked into the cauldron and honestly couldn’t tell what it was. Maybe it was cat sick… No, it was some sort of rock… Or… he shook his head and looked up at the student who looked about ready to add to the contents of the cauldron or perhaps soil his pants and the chair upon which he sat or maybe even both.

“It’s my confusing concoction,” the small boy replied.

Salazar nodded slowly, with a small smile, “Yes, it most certainly is.”

23. Telescope

It had been an hour and he still couldn’t find it. He’d scoured his bedroom and everything in it but, it was nowhere to be found. Salazar kicked his trunk and cursed loudly before exiting his rooms and leaving the dungeon. He really hadn’t wanted to bother her because he loathed her questions about what he was up to but, having lost his own telescope, he needed to borrow one of hers. He knocked on the door and waited. Helga opened the door, her hair and clothing a mess. She tried fixing herself up in vain and smiled, “Lose something?”

58. Hoot

“I think you know very well that I’ve lost something, Hufflepuff,” Salazar sneered. He must have guessed what she was holding behind her back.

She smiled condescendingly at him and tsked. “Now Salazar is that any way to speak to a trusted colleague? If I didn’t know any better, I would think you though of me more as a student instead of an equal.”

Her smiled widened as she watched him try and bring himself under control. Salazar was always a hoot and a half when he got riled up. Helga just loved watching him turn purple with suppressed rage.

96. Socks

They were finished. Someone was coming! Salazar quickly banished the pair of socks he just finished knitting. He would never live it down if someone caught him…

A thousand years passed and an old man wandered the castle with cold feet, searching for a toilet. He stumbled upon the room of requirement which produced a chamber pot and a pair of emerald green, woolen, socks with silver serpents knitted into a double S. The old man left, his feet warmed by the socks.

“Goodness Albus, where did you get those things?”

“It seems Slytherin was an excellent knitter,” he chuckled.

This one's for Jan.

21. Veela

Salazar wandered through the wilderness of Bulgaria, homeless and friendless, but determined. He had been walking for several days when he came upon the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes upon. He was determined to win her favor. “Madam, please spare me a moment,” he said but, she merely giggled and turned away.

“Please, I beg of you. I am a powerful wizard; a fine catch for any young maiden,” he continued, but still to no avail.

“I may be getting on in years but…” A sudden wave of inspiration broke over him, “I have a big snake!”

65. Ooze

It was the most embarrassing day of his life. Salazar sat on his bed with oozing pustules while his mother generously smothered him with a sticky, green, potion which made his face itch almost worse than the pustules ached. One day, they’d pay. They would all pay. He would be the greatest sorcerer in the world and they cower before him. And after that, he would cover them in boils until they begged for mercy. But, he wouldn’t give it to them. No, they would pay for ever thinking about tormenting the thin, pale, boy with an oozing pustules hex.

97. Dictionary

“The serpent is a limbless, scaly, elongated, reptile, some of which are venomous. Serpent is also another word for snake which is also associated with being deceitful or treacherous. The word is also used to describe something long, thin, and flexible, resembling a snake. Ophidian is another synonym for serpent…” Hermione stopped reading from the Witch’s Complete Dictionary of Magical Creatures when she was interrupted by an obnoxiously loud snore.

Hermione smacked Ron. “I know what a snake is Hermione. How will it help me learn more about Slytherin?” asked Ron but all he got was another smack in answer.

43. Headmaster

“We need a headmaster,” Salazar proposed.

“I agree,” said Helga. “I nominate Godric.”

Salazar grumbled incoherently. “Did you have something to say?” Rowena asked.

Godric chuckled, amused. “I don’t really think it’s all that necessary, do you?”

“Someone needs to have the final say in these discussions,” Salazar pouted.

“We seem to be getting along just fine sharing responsibility, though we could be a bit more united,” Godric thoughtfully replied.

“No, I will not have the kind of riff raff Helga accepts mingling with my students. That is final.”

“There now, you see, you’ve had the final word,” Rowena scoffed.

For Ern, who picked the number for my reentry into Salazar’s drabbles.

91. Future

“I am in the beyond!” Trelawney declared, one hand grasping in the air and the back of the other dramatically pressed against her forehead. “And I see…. The future!”

The students sat and waited for more, though this wasn’t anything they hadn’t heard a hundred times before. “There is water, taps… a bathroom! A thin man with an enormous snake delves deep into the catacombs of Hogwarts. He speaks to the serpent in an unknown tongue, sending him into a chamber and…”

“Excuse me professor, but that was the past. The man was Salazar Slytherin,” a small, courageous, voice interrupted.
