It was all Grandma’s fault. Neville had never wanted to wear these ridiculous socks (emblazoned with old-fashioned frills). He mused over this as he sat at the feet of a stone unicorn, trying to pry off the embellishments.
“What nice socks,” a voice commented.
Startled, he glanced over and saw Luna Lovegood.
Smiling vaguely at him, she pointed at the frills. “Those are perfect for warding off nargles.” She lifted her robes to display her own frilly socks.
Neville smiled back at her; no matter how loony she was, he was relieved he wasn’t the only one with atrocious socks.

“Parseltongue…parseltongue…” Neville couldn’t believe he’d forgotten his Defence Against Dark Arts essay was due tomorrow. He sat in the library, frantically flipping through a textbook.
A Ravenclaw leaned over her table and stared at him. Slightly irked by this, Neville finally met her gaze. He was used to her odd ways by this time. “Can you help me?” he asked. She was a Ravenclaw, after all; it couldn’t hurt.
“Gum disease. It’s a form of gum disease. I’m surprised the Aurors haven’t thought of that type yet,” she sighed whimsically as she closed her book.
“Er, thanks, Luna…” Neville mumbled.

The whir of owls’ wings rang through the Great Hall. Luna spotted her wizened owl; Dad must have brought something for her!
Her owl dropped a roll of parchment into her hands and she picked it up, unrolling it. It was a poster of a kneazle. Disappointed that it wasn’t something like a crumple-horned snorkack, she stuck it into her bag sadly.
As she was jostled in the throng on the way out, the long roll dropped from her bag. Neville picked it up, but she was gone; however, he made it a point to return it to her later.

It was detention with Snape, and Neville was copying supply order forms. Luna sat in front of him, writing in a flowing script, not looking the least bit perturbed.
An hour passed and Neville’s eyes were beginning to wander. He could see leprechauns dancing on Luna’s bracelet. Snape cleared his throat, causing Neville resume working.
When another hour was up, Snape collected the order forms. His eyes skimmed the top paper. “According to this form,” he said through the spaces of his teeth, “I want ten phials of leprechaun poison. It’s lobalug poison, Longbottom. Detention tomorrow, to amend your mistakes.”

“Give them back!” Luna’s voice drifted down the narrow corridor.
Turning the corner, Neville saw a couple of seventh-year Slytherins dangling a pair of purple shoes just out of Luna’s reach.
“Leave her alone!” Neville stuttered, drawing his wand. He felt immense anger bubbling inside his chest.
Luna put a hand on Neville’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, they’ll give them back eventually.” Her eyes remained normal, but he could sense her anger too. Pulling her with him, she started to walk away.
They were almost leaving the corridor when Luna’s shoes came flying at them. “You’re no fun,” the Slytherins drawled.

Luna was concentrating. Very hard. Her eyes were scrunched up (which was a rarely-used face for her) as her paintbrush moved across the canvas.
“What’s that?” Neville asked her, mystified.
“A dungeon.”
“A dungeon?” He surveyed the picture. “The colors are too bright for a stone dungeon! And why are there flowers growing on the walls?”
Luna didn’t lift her eyes from the canvas. “My dungeon is a bright dungeon.”
“Then it wouldn’t be a dungeon at all,” Neville reasoned, chuckling.
“Well, all you odd people wouldn’t think so, but ones without a narrow mind would understand,” Luna said matter-of-factly.

A celebrated art is the technique of chasing metal. Winifred Fersy is the most renowned chaser in the magical community. Both Luna and Neville looked up from reading this in their book.
“Chasing?” Neville asked in puzzlement. “Metal doesn’t have legs.”
Luna patiently explained, “There are different meanings of the word ‘chase’. In this case, when you ‘chase’ metal, it means that you engrave it for decoration.”
“Oh.” Neville paused for a moment to think. “But that doesn’t have anything to do with chasing something…”
Luna blinked at him with her orb-like eyes, wondering how someone couldn’t grasp the concept.

Luna often walked around Hogwarts castle in bright green dragon hide gloves. “They are useful in detecting awaiting bacteria living inside your belongings,” she explained to Neville, who had actually taken the time to ask one billowy autumn day. The others just shook their heads when they passed her.
“Oh, I see,” Neville answered, eyeing the gloves. “Aren’t they a bit thick for detecting bacteria?” They also looked very absurd and overlarge on Luna’s thin, small hands. He wondered if they were comfortable.
“Of course not,” Luna replied airily and patiently. “It’s the people who are thick who don’t believe.”

“Mars is bright tonight.” Luna lifted her eyes from the telescope she was gazing through and turned it so Neville could have a turn.
Shuffling closer to her, Neville gulped and placed his sweaty hands on the tube. It was awkward enough being with Luna alone at the astronomy tower, but having to adjust a telescope by himself was too much to ask his jittering nerves.
“Here, let me help you,” Luna offered calmly, unfazed. She lightly placed a hand upon his and turned some knobs with the other.
His heart was palpitating now, but he fought down a blush.

A group of Slytherins leaned back in their library chairs after a long chat. Neville approached them and asked, “Do you know where to find books on toadstools?”
“Does it look like it?” one Slytherin snapped.
Neville, taken aback, scuffled off to another aisle.
“Don’t you find Longbottom so vexing?” the Slytherin mused distastefully, scowling at the Gryffindor’s retreating back.
“No, I don’t,” Luna said as she drifted past. “He’s a nice bloke; you should get to know him.”
“Looks like Longbottom has Loony as a girlfriend; what a perfect match,” the Slytherin jeered to her friends as Luna left.

Luna Lovegood’s pace was a curious one indeed. She sometimes would twirl whimsically in a medium pace, then slow to a drift, and then speed up to a skip.
Neville liked watching her. She was just so interesting to him, unlike anyone he’d ever met. Perhaps he liked her because she was a better version of himself—an oddball, but okay with it.
Maybe if he imitated her pace he would learn to be okay with being the odd one out too. Making sure no one was watching, he tried a twirl.
No, that won’t do, he immediately figured out.

“There’s a new and young professor at Hogwarts,” Professor Alabaster told Professor Longbottom, who blinked in surprise.
“Really? Who is it?” Professor Longbottom inquired with interest. He took off his potting gloves, which were crusted with dirt, and picked up an Abyssinian Shrivelfig.
Professor Alabaster smiled serenely. “Professor Lovegood.”
Nearly dropping his plant, Professor Longbottom sputtered, “Lovegood? Luna Lovegood?”
The other professor nodded. “She’s an interesting one, but I’m sure she’ll do a wonderful job teaching. She seems to have a real keen interest.”
“And I think I know which class she’ll be teaching,” Professor Longbottom concluded with a grin.

Neville groaned and let his parchment fall to the table. Rubbing his eyes, he mumbled, “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish my homework today.”
Luna looked over her book at him. “Come, Neville, you will be able to do it. It’s only seventeen inches long. I always finish my homework and have time to read.” She held up her Quibbler magazine as proof.
“Meh.” Neville sighed and twiddled his quill (unsuccessfully). “You’re in Ravenclaw, though. You’re naturally smart, then.”
“Being in Ravenclaw doesn’t make you smart,” Luna pointed out fairly, flipping a page and looking at Neville pointedly.

Neville and Luna loped towards the warmth of Hogwarts castle, their footsteps splashing through the puddles and hair being whipped about by the wind.
“Take time to enjoy the rain; if it comes in contact with your scalp, the little pleuts that reside in the raindrop will bless you with further knowledge,” Luna told Neville over the cry of the wind as she ran in a circle.
“What? Oh—well—oh bother,” Neville chuckled, standing stationary as Luna skipped around him.
She reached over and ruffled his hair (making him blush brightly), “For equal spacing of the pleuts,” she explained.

“I dislike potions class,” Luna mumbled to herself airily as she left the dungeon. In her view, Professor Snape had to broaden his mind to alterations of potions; perhaps the horn of a Crumple Horned Snorkack would add another magical element to the Ageing Potion.
But no, he had severely told her that the body parts of Crumple-Horned Snorkacks would never have a place in potion making. What narrow-mindedness! He wasn’t even nice about it, like Hermione was.
Yes, she did dislike potions very much.
Little did she know that Neville was thinking the same thing at that very moment.

Neville was walking on clouds. Professor Sprout had just told the class he’d received the highest marks (full marks, at that) in the Herbology OWL examinations. Hermione had looked crestfallen but happy for him at the same time when she congratulated him after class.
“You know you’re a try-hard when…” Malfoy sneered as he walked past Neville on the way back from the greenhouses.
Luna patted Neville kindly on the shoulder. “I heard you got full marks on your Herbology OWL. Congratulations!”
“Thanks.” He blushed sheepishly, and as she walked away, he touched the spot where her hand had lain.

The winter air was cold on Neville and Luna’s ears as they walked through Hogsmeade window-shopping. “Why don’t we go inside Honeydukes?”
A blast of warm air descended upon them as they entered. Jelly Slugs, Peppermint Toads, and Chocolate Frogs lined the walls. A magnificent quill, which Neville found out was a sugar quill, stood by the entrance.
As Luna looked the other way, he reached the counter and paid for it. “Here, this is for you,” he said, holding it out.
“Why, thank you!” Luna took the quill gratefully (though she knew it would rot her teeth and gums).

Luna saw Neville through the greenhouse working on a few pot plants after his Herbology class. He was supposed to meet her here, but clearly he had lost track of the time. Stepping forward curiously, she peeked in closer. He was so concentrated on his potting that he didn’t even notice her, but she didn’t mind. She liked watching him at work, doing the one thing he loved best.
Wiping sweat from his brow (which smudged dirt on his face), he looked up at saw her gazing at him. Flushing, he waved at her and she waved back, smiling vaguely.

Oh, how Neville did want to invite Luna to the Yule Ball with him—if only he could find her! He imagined dancing with her all night long, watching her spin, laughing with her over butterbeer.
Scanning the crowd, he groaned hopelessly. He had searched everywhere for her—he knew her class schedule, but she was nowhere to be found. He had thought of going to the Ravenclaw common room, but he didn’t know where it was. And time was running out.
I guess I’ll have to ask Hermione, he sighed reluctantly, mounting the flight of stairs to Gryffindor tower.

The rain extinguished his hopes. Long drips slithered down the windows, making him sigh. Neville stood up, then jumped when he saw who was behind him.
“Wow, you scared me!” he exclaimed.
Luna grinned mystically. “Am I really that scary?”
“No, no, of course not. You’re not scary at all,” he sputtered, turning red in the face.
Her perturbing eyes probed the sky.
“The rain sure knows how to extinguish a nice weekend, doesn’t it?” Neville started for the sake of carrying on a conversation.
Luna shrugged. “We can find lots of things to do when it rains. Follow me.”

The village of Hogsmeade was bright and cheery this autumn day and welcomed the couple with open arms. Leaves danced about their feet, the sun shone warmly upon their backs, and laughter floated to their ears.
Neville patted Luna’s arm gently, thinking about how this year would be the last of his education at Hogwarts, and last year at school with Luna. He had to make the best of it.
“Why don’t we browse around?” she suggested before he started, wrapping her hand around his arm in the fashion that she always did. “Maybe we can find some nargle bait.”

“I’m sure you’d be a great actress,” Neville told Luna as they wandered aimlessly down the halls.
“I’ve never acted in my life,” Luna replied, giving him a searching look.
Neville thought for a moment on this. Of course she’d never acted; she’d never had to act a part—she was always…Luna. Unlike everyone else in the school, she was herself at all times and didn’t need to pretend to be cooler or smarter.
He responded to her statement. “That’s true, but I like it that way.”
She smiled, and he had the feeling she knew what he was thinking.

Luna sighed and picked at her arithmancy homework. She never had liked numbers much, as they were too narrow-minded and definite. She preferred Divination, though it was a bit hokey to her.
“Having fun with your homework, I see,” Neville said, shifting towards her and staring at the complicated numbers. He was glad he hadn’t chosen to take Arithmancy the previous year.
“Loads,” Luna sighed, closing the book. “It’s actually not too bad, if you think positively.”
He had the urge to squeeze her hand as it lay upon the textbook. After contemplating and hesitating, he followed through.
She smiled.
