25. Sorting Hat

“Potter, Albus!”

A small boy with dark hair and bright green eyes walked nervously toward the stool in the middle of the platform. He sat and the professor set the Sorting Hat on his head.

Albus let out a small gasp as he heard the hat talking in his head, making vague comments about what house would lead him to greatness. His nerves were getting the better of him; he forgot his father’s advice…

“Slytherin!” the Hat announced.

Al’s eyes widened in shock, he felt his face pale…

He fell off the stool with a thud!

Albus Potter had fainted.

34. Parseltongue

“So are you a Parseltongue?”

“No!”

“I heard your dad was.”

“No, he’s not!”

“Well, you should be.”

“No!”

“How can you be in Slytherin then?”

“You’re not a Parselmouth either!”

“My family isn’t known for it.”

“Neither is mine!”

“But your dad-“

“No!”

Albus Potter was getting frustrated – no, he was frustrated. This Goyle kid seemed to think Al just had to be a Parselmouth because Al’s father supposedly was – which he wasn’t! But this kid just wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“So can you tell me how to speak-“

“No!”

This kid wasn’t very bright, was he?

36. Muggle

“Y’know if you eat too much you’ll die,” James said casually to his younger cousin. Albus and Lily sat beside their brother, trying to hide their laughter.

Their cousin, Roger Dursley, paused in his eating and looked at James with wide eyes. “Really?”

“Oh yeah,” continued James. “You’ll blow up like a balloon and when you get too full – pop!”

Roger gasped and dropped the chicken in his hand immediately. He pushed away from the table, exclaiming, “I’m done!”, before running from the room.

“Muggles.” James shook his head as he grabbed the uneaten chicken. Albus and Lily just laughed.

7. Care of Magical Creatures

“So,” began Hagrid as he set a couple mugs of tea on the table, “will yeh be takin’ my class when yer a third year?”

“Well…” Albus said slowly, unsure how to answer as he had heard all about Hagrid’s class from his uncle Ron. “I dunno yet.”

“Yer dad loved my class,” Hagrid continued with a fond smile. “Didn’ take it after his O.W.L.s though. Couldn’ fit it in his schedule.”

“Maybe I’ll do it then…” Albus replied. A couple years of CoMC didn’t seem too bad…

“Really? Great! I can’ wait ter interduce yeh ter the Blast-Ended Skrewts!”

78. Author's Choice [Fame]

Everybody knew him as “one of Harry Potter’s sons” or “that Slytherin Potter boy.” Nobody seemed to care to know his name; everyone just asked what it was like to have famous Harry Potter as a father or why he was in Slytherin. It was mainly other first years that asked him the first question since everyone else has already asked his brother before.

Albus had no answer for either question though, and it all only made him feel even shyer than he already was.

But the questions finally stopped one day when a blond-haired Slytherin stepped in to help.

13. Quidditch

“What Quidditch position are you wanting to play?” Scorpius asked.

“Definitely Chaser,” Albus answered, “the best position ever.”

“Now, see, that’s where you’re wrong. Keeper is the best position out there.”

“Uh-uh, Scorpy,” piped up a blonde-haired girl from a chair near them. “Beater is the best position of all time.”

“And why exactly is that?” asked Scorpius haughtily. “Beaters don’t even score any points.”

“But we do get to legally beat people up. And who doesn’t like that?”

The two boys were silent for a moment. Then Albus said, “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Cindy.”

57. Gape

“Trust me, it’ll work,” James assured his wide-eyed brother.

“Exactly,” Albus countered. “What if it does and you hit a professor?”

“It’s a harmless Muggle prank,” James answered. “It’s not like anyone will-”

He stopped and turned at the sound of a splash and a yelp, grinning at first then attempting to hide it when he was his victim.

Professor Neville Longbottom stood just inside the door, a bucket on his head, his torso soaked in some kind of goo.

James snickered and then suddenly turned on Albus. “Al! How could you do that to a professor?!”

Albus simply gaped.

9. Defense Against the Dark Arts

“Partner up.”

When the DADA professor said that, Albus looked over at Scorpius and Cindy, wondering if one of them would partner with him. But before he could ask, a Slytherin girl with dark brown hair came over to him.

“Um, hi,” she said shyly. “You’re Albus, right?” He nodded, feeling a little bit of surprise that someone had actually referred to him by his name. “Would you… like to be my partner?”

“Sure,” he answered, shrugging. “What’s your name?”

“Gwennan,” she answered. “But you can call me Gwen.”

“Then you can call me Al,” he replied with a smile.

54. Dare

“Truth or dare?”

“This is stupid,” Albus muttered, crossing his arms.

“Dare then,” Cindy answered for him.

“No!”

“Okay, so I dare you…” Scorpius ignored Al’s protest, trailing off thoughtfully. Suddenly he reached into a pocket in his school bag. “I dare you to give this Valentine chocolate to Professor Longbottom.”

“No way!” Albus cried. “I didn’t even agree to this!”

“So?”

“I’m not doing it!”

“C’mon, Al,” Gwen encouraged, obviously trying to hide her laughter. “You have to do it.”

“No.” Al glared at them all.

But the next day Professor Longbottom found a chocolate heart on his desk.

59. Ignore

“Did you do it?” Scorpius asked as he and Albus walked to the Great Hall.

“Yeah,” Albus replied. “I almost got eaten by the Venomous Tentacula, but I managed to put the chocolate on his desk.”

“Lame. You were supposed to give it to him.”

“What’s it matter? He gets it either way. Where did you get the chocolate anyway?”

“Some girl gave it to me. Dunno her name. Don’t really care.”

“Isn’t that kinda mean to give away a gift?”

“What’s your point?” Scorpius asked, ignoring the girl across the hall who was obviously trying to get his attention.

95. Snowball

[for the { find the snowman } mini-challenge]

“You know what would be funny?” James asked, looking shiftily at Albus.

“What?”

“I’m gonna make that Goyle kid think this snowman is alive.”

Albus raised his eyebrows, interested, but said nothing. He hid behind the rather large snowman with his brother who was making a snowball. Once he was done, he stood and threw it.

The two watched as Goyle, looking for his attacker, turned around immediately after he was hit. Confusion settled on his face as he saw no one… and then he saw the snowman. His eyes went wide.

Al’s eyes also went wide in amused disbelief.

65. Ooze

“Are you sure the cookies are supposed to look like that?” Albus asked, eyeing the gooey things through the oven window.

“Of course. I know how to read a recipe,” Rose Weasley said indignantly.

“That’s not what I mean exactly…”

“And what do you mean?”

“Well…I just don’t think they should be oozing all that…stuff.”

The redhead stared at the still doughy-looking cookies, trying not to frown. What should have been little chocolate chips was now spreading outside of the cookie dough. “Well…maybe…”

She stopped, eyes wide, as the cookies suddenly started shriveling…

“I think something’s wrong with the oven.”

1. Herbology

“I’m sorry to say it, but you’re failing Herbology.”

Albus stared at Professor Longbottom with wide eyes. He wasn’t really surprised, but actually hearing it made it sound a lot worse.

“I think you need a tutor.”

“No, I don’t...”

“You do if you want to pass and become an Auror.”

He had him there.

“I’m assigning Alice as your tutor.”

“Fine.”

That weekend, instead of curling up by the fireplace, Albus had to make the cold trek with Alice to the greenhouses to learn, perhaps the hard way, why learning about devil’s snare was essential to becoming an Auror.

43. Headmaster

So. The Headmaster’s Office.

This was the first time Albus had been to this place, and he wasn’t sure what to expect. Was he in trouble? What had he done? That was something he’d need to figure out if he wanted to get out of trouble. Or could something be wrong? Had something happened to one of his relatives? His grandparents? Merlin, he desperately hoped it wasn’t anything like that. He’d much rather be in trouble.

Finally he reached the top of the spiral staircase. He knocked first then opened the door.

The headmaster wasn’t there.

“That’s Potter all right.”

42. Portraits

“Looks just like him,” a voice sneered.

“Like his father, certainly,” said another, much lighter voice. “He, too, has Lily’s eyes.”

“But his father’s personality, no doubt.”

“Who’s there?” Albus asked, wide eyed, looking around for the mysterious voices. The portraits…?

“Up here, boy,” came the sneering voice, which Albus now saw came from a sallow-skinned man dressed in black.

“Hello, Albus,” said a man with half-moon glasses and twinkling blue eyes.

“Um, hi,” he replied uncertainly.

“He doesn’t know who we are, Dumbledore.”

“It seems that way, Severus. Now, however, he does.”

Albus could only stare at the portraits.

85. Snappish

“You’re- You’re-” Albus stammered.

“He’s about as articulate as Longbottom.”

“Now, Severus, he’s just had a bit of a shock, that’s all. He’ll be quite fine in a little while.”

“Perhaps he’ll faint.”

“I will NOT,” Albus snapped, having suddenly found his voice.

“See? Just fine.” Dumbledore smiled.

“A bit snappish though,” Snape commented.

“No more than you,” Albus countered.

“If you two Slytherins are done,” Dumbledore cut in, receiving small glares from both of them, especially from Snape, “I do believe we should move on. Albus doesn’t have all day.”

Albus nodded. “Exactly… why am I up here… sir?”

91. Future

Dumbledore continued smiling. “I wanted Severus here to see you, for one. Your father has told us about you.”

“Really?”

“Of course. So, I wanted to ask if perhaps, in the future, you would not mind stopping by here for a chat every now and then.”

“Me? Why?”

“Well, it gets a bit boring around here with all these old headmasters, you know?” He winked. “It would be nice to talk to someone new every now and again.”

Trying not to laugh at the looks the other headmasters were giving Dumbledore, Albus replied, “Sure, I reckon I could do that.”

73. Warn

Albus was in the library, searching for a book that would help him with this ridiculous amount of homework he had to do. Normally he would’ve asked Rose for helped, but she was refusing to let him copy off her. How selfish, right?

Suddenly he found something that caught his eye, and he pulled it out.

The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, the title read, by Rita Skeeter.

Wasn’t that the woman who’d written all those crazy articles? His dad had warned him about her and her books; he'd said they weren’t worth reading.

Still. Al was awfully curious…
