Entrance Hall & Sorting Totems

Entrance Hall & Sorting Totems - First Floor

The entrance is just one of the many breathtaking places of Ilvermorny. Upon opening the double doors and walking in the first thing you notice is the Gordian Knot in the center of the room surrounded by four large wooden statues each being a mascot to one of the four houses. If you are an incoming first year the first thing you must do once your name is called is stand in the center of the knot. The statue that reacts is the house that wants you to be placed in it. If the rarity occurs that two statues react to a student the student gets to pick which of the two houses he or she would like to be in. This doesn't happen often but becomes exciting when it does. Once a student is selected by their house their next step is heading into the next room to be selected by their wand.

The carvings react by:

Horned Serpent - The crystal in the carving's forehead glows.
Wampus - The carving roars.
Thunderbird - The carving beats its wings.
Pukwudgie - The carving raises its arrow.

If you are a returning student you are well aware of the status and the knot and can proceed into the entrance to move to the stair case that is on the opposite side of the doors or through another set of doors to the left that takes you through the first-floor hallway. During the sorting ceremony, older students are encouraged to head up the staircase to the glass circular balcony to watch the first years and cheer for their new housemates.

Abel couldn't believe he would be returning to Ilvermorny this year. His parents were pretty serious on them remaining rooted, plus given his history... he was essentially going with the flow at this point. He was a fifth year now, with his sixteenth birthday approaching in less than a week. Whatever. If it wasn't for some people, he would not be here at all.

After crossing the point of no return, Abel decided to just head straight up the staircase. He could check out and see who the newbies were this year. Heh, poor fools. Watching overhead the glass circular balcony, he waited to see who would show up and get sorted first.

Although much more entertaining than the Hogwarts sorting ceremony that was silent until it yelled your house, Blair still prefered to watch the new sorting from a distance... One time standing on the platform and one time sitting on the stool was enough for her. She hadn't felt more relieved than when she had been instantly accepted back into Wampus last year when she had returned to Ilvermorny.

Jer trainers made no sound as she moved up the staircase, though she smirked a little as she saw the tall brunet standing and watching the new first years. "Watching to see who freaks out first?" Blair asked Abel as she slid into the small gap to his side, by way of greeting.

What was nice about this view was the height, it wasn't scary tall from the railing see, but it was tall enough for the ones below to barely make out who was watching above. Abel couldn't really remember looking up during this ceremony. He just remembered wanting to get it over with. Traditional ceremonies were so overrated, unless there was a little surprise thrown in. Maybe today would be the lucky day.

"I swear these runts are smaller than last years," Abel smirked at Blair, "How long do you think it'd take for a water balloon to crash the party?" Not that he had any at the moment, if he wanted to. But there were other methods.

It was especially nice, when you weren't that tall in the first place - a good view to look downwards, but when her fellow students looked upwards it wasn't likely that they would see anything more than her brunette hair... and lets face it. How many students had brown hair in the whole school?? Exactly. They would never know it was her.

Unless they were crazy smart like her Dad... but he was in the DMLE... so he had to be.

"You grew like a tree, Abel. Shush." Blair replied without even missing a beat. "Not all of us are beanstalks." Unfortunately, she definitely took after her Mother's side of the family, she had nothing on her 6'4" father at a measly 5'3"... She was still hoping that she would grow some more as she got older but... well she wasn't betting on it.

Eyeing how high they were, the Scottish-American witch shrugged her shoulder a little. "Not long... One or two seconds probably?" She eyed his robes sceptically, wondering if the older boy had some to hand...

Abel couldn't help smirking at Blair, "Heh, no kidding, shawty." He couldn't help adding a little playful banter.. and a little head pat. She was cool enough to get this. He wouldn't know where his height came from, but it sure felt good knowing he was catching up to his parents who still could see over him. Here at Ilvermorny though, geez, some were just tiny compared to him. He almost felt bad. Almost, this was Abel after all. Only a select few made him at the very least pretend to care.

"Hmm.. want to test that out?" He didn't have balloons but he did have a substitute. Slipping out his wand casually as if he just wanted to check it was still there to an outsider. A little Aguamenti magic wouldn't hurt anyone, yeah?

Rolling her eyes at the nickname the giant next to her insisted on using, Blair leant forward, resting one elbow easily on the barrier as she continued to watch the students milling around below them. Though the head pat that followed, earned him a quick glare. He may be tall, friendly and cute - but she wasn't a creature in a petting zone and she told him such, even though she couldn't quite keep the growl in her voice; "I'm not a creature, Abel." Though, if he had started to play with her hair, that likely would have been a different story.

Leaning forward again, casually leaning both of her elbows on the rail, and her chin on her knucles - all innocent like - the Californian nodded her head. "Yes." Looking down below, she motioned with her head ever so slightly to their right - a huddle of witches sitting together ignoring everything but each other. "Them." It wasn't a question.

If there was one thing that stroked Abel's feelings it was seeing someone's bad reaction. Surely, to the average one a quick glare was enough to get someone to back off.. but not Abel. He merely grinned back at her glare, she was cute. She surely wasn't being serious about making him back off just as he wasn't serious about treating her like a pet. "Nah, you're priceless." Take that as you will. He somehow felt good letting her know that like she was.. nah, today wasn't the day to think that.

Abel leaned against the railing again, keeping his composure as innocent as possible. Them Was just the signal he needed, he had glanced briefly making sure no one else's eye was on him before poking his wand just out of his jacket sleeve, "Aguamenti" He whispered before he watched the light stream of what looked like rain shoot out in the direction of the huddled witches. "Let's go." He placed a hand on her back, they could not stay there any longer as he barely kept his chuckles silenced.

Blair frowned at the grin she got in return to her glare, before sighing as she rolled her eyes; honestly, what was he like?? Leaning on her right elbow a little more, her chin resting on her fisted hand, her bicep pressed against Abel's arm slightly and internally she smiled -- not that she liked the feeling of touching him. Nope. Nu-uh. Not her.

Blinking at his comment, the Fourth Year side-eyed him slightly, trying to figure out if he was mocking her or being serious... Surely he was just pulling her leg... Right? Uh.... Let's just leave that thought for later on, when he couldn't see her face and anaylise her facial expressions. No thank you. Pretty Giant wasn't getting in that easy.

With a small, discrete smirk on her face, the Wampus student watched as she shower started to soak the girls she had decided were to be pinpointed... Although her amusement was easily quieted, the feeling of his hand on the base of her back - hot and obvious to her, even through the material of her shirt and cloak - forced her to move. She followed his lead away from the balcony towards the hall. As soon as they were out of ear shot, she sniggered a little louder.

They had just made it to the castle and all the students were going everywhere. His brown eyes really couldn't keep up with everything going on. He followed along as the professor escorted first years into the entrance. The Entrance Hal was huge with students watching from the balcony.

What if he trips in front of the entire school? What if nothing happens when it was his turn. Will he just be told to go home? Jabre just stood watching students go ahead of him, but with the last name that began with F he didn't have to wait long.

"Faust, Jabra"

The professor said over the cheering that was going on for the last first year. He stepped away from the group and came to stand at the center of the entrance hall. It was a unique place and on a normal day, if there were any of those anymore, he would have enjoyed looking around here, but today he was nervous and just stepped where he was told.

He stood in the center of the knot watching the statues. Did that one flicker... no, but maybe... no, he wasn't going to be picked by any. He stood almost feeling like he could run away when finally a Crystal in the forehead of a statue lit up and people cheered, but what was it? He looked around trying to find an answer.

"Congratulations Mr. Faust you are now a Horned Serpent. Please head through those doors to get your wand."

Now that was something... he hurried towards the doors that the professor had said.
