Ch 1
“Congratulations Miss Prince,” The aged wizard spoke, extending his right hand, “You are now an employee of the Ministry of Magic.” Agyness immediately stuck out her hand to meet his and shake it, “Thank you so much, sir. I promise, I won’t let you down.”

Agyness walked out of the employment office, located in the entry level of the Ministry of Magic, dodging the other employees that were bustling about. My first job, she thought, her full lips forming a smile on her heart-shaped face. Only nineteen years old, two years out of Hogwarts, and she had finally scored her dream job. Her parents would be so proud. “Oh darling, seven years of being a Ravenclaw has suited you well,” her mother would gush as her dad would tower off to the side, smiling and nodding in approval. Her parents would finally give her some recognition, after all of those years of fawning over her famous friends that she had gone to school with.

Not noticing where she was headed, Agyness flew into a curly-haired woman, almost knocking over her stack of books. “Agyness, how did it go?!” Hermione demanded of her friend after making a quick recovery, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her viciously. A wide grin formed on Agyness’s face before answering, “I start on Monday.” Hermione shrieked and threw her arms around Agyness’s petite frame, embracing her. “Hermione… can’t—breathe,” Agyness squeaked. Hermione eased her hold on her, then began interrogating, “Well, what department are you in? What are your hours? You can’t keep me waiting here all day.” Hermione began tapping her foot impatiently, and Agyness began with a little laugh, “I’m in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, of course-” Hermione interrupted her and began raving, “Oh, you’ll be with Harry, Ron, and myself; lovely! You’ll fit right in, I can introduce you to-” “Hold on, Hermione,” it was Agyness’s turn to interrupt, “I’m not a full on auror… not yet, at least. The man said that all aurors are mentored for a full year before they begin…” “Well, of course! How silly of me-” Hermione began again, but Agyness silenced her enthusiasm with the raise of her hand. “They said I’ll be mentored by someone named…” Agyness began unfolding a piece of official-looking Ministry paper, “Draco Malfoy? Heard of him?”

Hemione’s jaw dropped and she almost dropped her stack of books, again. “What?!” She almost shrieked, her cheeks flaming and her nostrils flaring. Hermione then proceeded to grab Agyness by the arm and lead her to the elevators, her curly hair flying behind her in a whirlwind. “What’s wrong?” Agyness spoke, trying to keep up with her frenzied pace. “You’ll see. My office. Now.” That was all that Hermione could muster without completely losing it.

The elevator ride was silent, with Hermione silently fuming in one corner and Agyness almost cowering in the other. When they finally reached the right floor, Hermione almost forced the elevator doors open herself and once again grabbed Agyness, almost dragging her down the hallway. When they reached Hermione’s office, Agyness was flung into a red-leathered seat as Hermione began pacing around the room in a furor. Letting her cool off, Agyness decided to look upon the organized room that was Hermione’s work space, envisioning herself soon to have a similar office of her own. A bulletin board with many colorful tacks and newspaper clippings showed pictures of fugitives, some in prison (like Bellatrix Lestrange), some still at large (like Macnair), and some that had died in incarceration (Agyness could not recall their names). Hermione decided to speak, interrupting Agyness’s thoughts, “Malfoy… Malfoy… How can you not remember that little rat?” Hermione gave her a pleading look, as though trying to force her to remember their years at Hogwarts. After a minute of thinking, Agyness responded, “Hermione, I honestly do not remember a boy named Draco Malfoy. I remember some people, like Neville, Luna, Parvati, Padma-”

Now it was Hermione’s turn to raise her hand to interrupt Agyness. She took a deep breath before she spoke, “Oh, how stupid of me. Of course you don’t remember; I can’t recall you being with us when he was around. Besides, you were a year behind us and are a year younger... Draco was… well—to put it nicely, a rather rude Slytherin.” “That’s it?” Agyness replied, raising her eyebrows so high that they couldn’t be seen beneath her dark bangs. “To tell the truth, he hasn’t changed much since...” Hermione responded. It was silent for a second, and then Agyness giggled slightly. Hermione gave her a scorching look, “What’s so funny?” “Hermione,” Agyness said, trying to speak between her chortles, “do you honestly believe that a nasty little Slytherin can intimidate me? Okay, maybe not little but… twenty year old Slytherin? Why do you think I was hired as an auror in the first place?”

At that moment, there was a knock on the door. Hermione grasped the handle and turned it open. There was a black-haired man with thick glasses and another man, who was freckled and towered above his companion. “Hello,” Harry and Ron said to Hermione at once, Ron adding a peck on Hermione’s cheek to his greeting. “Hey,” Hermione responded, her cheeks now flaming from joy while opening the door to let them in and to allow them to see Agyness, “Guess who just got hired?”

“Agyness!” The men said in unison, both running over to their old friend and grasping her in a group hug. “Guys…” Agyness squeaked, her petite frame not equipped to being squeezed by two strong men at once. When they released her, Harry began, “So, who’s going to be your mentor? Hermione, right? That’s why you’re both chatting in here?” “Actually,” Hermione began, “I was just going to let you guys know…” She grasped Harry and Ron, Ron with a bemused expression on his face, by their arms and led them outside, closing the door firmly behind her. After a few minutes, the echo of two male voices shouting, “What?!” could be heard throughout the corridor. After a few minutes of audible squabbling, the trio reentered Hermione’s office, all with the same irritated expression on their faces.

“Okay, anyone care to give me a valid reason why I should be fuming like the rest of you?” Agyness said, a hint of exasperation in her voice. At that moment, a phone rang. “Granger’s office.” Hermione answered it lightning fast. After a minute of “really?” and “uh-huh.”, Hermione hung up and turned to face Harry and Ron, starting to speak in a serious tone, “We’ve got a lead on Macnair. A big lead. If we want a chance, we have to act now.” Harry and Ron shot out of the office like bullets, leaving Hermione alone with Agyness. “Care to explain before you guys save the day…yet again?” Agyness said, somewhat sarcastically. Hermione grabbed Agyness’s hands in a motherly fashion and kneeled to chair-level to be even with her. Agyness was surprised, to say the least. “Sweetheart, just be careful. He has history.” And with that, Hermione grabbed her wand from her desk and almost ran out, leaving Agyness sitting in slight awe.

After a minute, Agyness recovered herself from the day’s madness and made her way out of Hermione’s cramped office to the elevator down the long corridor. She walked, half in a daze, absorbed in her thoughts. “What’s the big deal?” Agyness thought to herself as she gazed through the pseudo-windows on the wall, “A nasty old Slytherin bully. I think I can handle it without all of the commotion that everyone’s causing…” At that moment, Agyness almost ran into an auror who was stepping out of his office, a stack of papers almost as large as he in his grip. “Not again!” Agyness spoke when she recovered herself, her mind now set on fixing her mistake. “I am sooo sorry-” She began again, frantically trying to help the man pick up his stack of papers.

“Don’t fret… here.” The man finally spoke, turning to her and placing the papers back properly into their place with just the flick of his wand. When he turned to look at her, Agyness was speechless. He had fair skin, and was almost a good foot taller than her. He had brilliant white teeth (Agyness could tell because his perfect lips were formed into a broad grin). His eyes were a deep, blue color, and his fair blond hair was set in a perfect, half-unkempt, half-styled look. Before Agyness could gather herself, the gorgeous man spoke, “You must be the new girl, Agyness, right?” She managed to splutter out, “Y-Yes… I am.” He once again spoke before she could think of something to say, “You’ll have fun here. The year of being an auror-in-training really prepares you for the real world…” He stopped and noticed the direction that she had been walking in before, “Would you care for me to escort you to the elevator?” Agyness just smiled and nodded, becoming slightly more comfortable with this handsome stranger.

As they walked, Agyness managed to speak a coherent sentence, “So, how long have you been employed here?” “Oh, about two years. I got the job almost immediately after I finished my schooling.” The walk to the elevator was short, and the gentleman pressed the button to open the elevator for her. Agyness stepped in and said, “Thank you for the lovely chat. See you around?” “Definitely,” the man responded, winking at her. The elevator doors silently closed, and he was gone. Agyness made the slow climb up to the entry level.

She arrived at her quaint flat, located in the heart of London, in the still of the night, still pondering about the mystery man she had met earlier. As she laid her head on her pillow and tucked herself into her plush, white cotton coverlet, she realized that she never did ask the man his name.

Oooooh, I likey!
Very nice and well-written, Draco's definitely my favorite FF protagonist. Let's see what your Draco will turn out like! "He has a history", hmm? Sounds like he's still a little troublemaker.
Can't wait to read more!

Ch 2
It was Monday morning and Agyness’s first official day of work. She dressed herself in the most presentable outfit she could find in her wardrobe, which was a fitted, short-sleeved, jet black dress that reached a little longer than mid-thigh and had a loose, hanging turtleneck. She then proceeded to put on black tights and flat, ankle-high, black boots. As she examined herself in the mirror, she laughed at herself. She knew that she didn’t look completely professional, but she wanted to keep some of her teenage flair for as long as she could. Right before Agyness was to leave, a tiny, palm-sized owl promptly flew in through her window and dropped and small piece of parchment onto her bed. It ruffled it’s fluffy feathers as it steadied itself. “Hi, Pigwidgeon,” She cooed at the owl before he flew back out into the early morning sunlight. Agyness picked up the letter and read the perfect handwriting:

Dear Agyness,
I (or we rather) hope you have a fabulous first day of work! Harry, Ron, and I are currently searching for Macnair in an undisclosed location. Sorry, darling! I really want to tell you, but I wouldn’t want to risk the chance that little Pig might get intercepted. Don’t forget what I told you the other day; as Mad-Eye used to say, “Constant vigilance!” There’s no telling how long that we might be gone, so please try to hang in there before we return!
With Love, Hermione

Agyness finished the letter and almost rolled her eyes. It was sweet that her friends cared about her so much, but it was starting to become cumbersome to have to deal with reminders of “constant vigilance!” Agyness set the piece of parchment to the side, and apparated to the Ministry of Magic’s Entry Level. After checking in at the front desk with a rather portly, middle-aged security guard, she made her way through the bustling level to one of the many cramped elevators. After observing the coming and going of many (like an elderly witch levitating an ominously bubbling cauldron in front of herself and a frantic wizard whose Quick Quotes Quill was scribbling down notes on a clipboard as he muttered), she finally reached the correct level. The smooth female voice that seemingly came from nowhere spoke, “Level two, Department of Magical Law Enforcement, including the Improper Use of Magic Office, Auror Headquarters, and Wizengamot Administration Services.” Agyness was the only person to step from the elevator, as most of the other employees had reached their destination before she had.

She made a slow stroll down the hall, searching for a door emblazoned with the words, “MALFOY OFFICE.” She reached the door and inwardly laughed to herself. Along with the words that she had been searching for, the door was numbered. It was, of course, numbered like all of the other offices. However, this one was inscribed with the number, “13”. Coincidence? She thought not. Agyness nervously knocked on the door with her knuckles, expecting the worst.

“Come in,” the sound of a deep, male drawl emanated from behind the door. Before turning the doorknob and plunging into the unknown, she took one last deep breath. A tall, black leather chair was positioned behind a desk and was facing a roaring fireplace. Definitely the work of magic. The chair was so tall that Agyness could not at all see the man she was to be mentored by for the next year. The room was decorated in the complete opposite way that Hermione’s office was. It was definitely organized, but it was just… bleak. The only color in the room came from the light from the fireplace, the green and gray of various Slytherin decorations positioned through the room, and the cherry wood that was the desk. Absolutely everything else, most of the furniture, the walls, even the carpet, was black. With the sound of a swishing wand, the door closed and a chair appeared at Agyness’s feet. “Indication for me to sit,” She considered to herself before taking a seat. The man turned in his chair to face her.

It was him. Not at all as she had expected, of course. Agyness had been expecting a short, plump young man with a permanent scowl plastered onto his face and already graying hair. Instead, it was the attractive man that she had bumped into the other day. Agyness was, once again, speechless. After taking a look at her, the man spoke teasingly, “Gave you a fright, did I?” A sneer formed on his face. Agyness relaxed at his seemingly playful comment, “To tell the truth, you did. You knew that you were going to be mentoring me, when you took me to the elevator?” “Of course,” He responded, fighting back a laugh. “It’s fun to have a little sport with the new aurors, especially the pretty ones,” He finished with a self-satisfied smile and a gleam in his eyes. “Cute.” She responded with a slightly sarcastic grin, “So, how do you want to be addressed, seeing as I’m basically a minion of yours for the next year? Mr. Malfoy, perhaps?” “Oh, Supreme Ruler will be just fine…” He responded, and then said, “Kidding! Kidding!” when he noticed her look of shock.

“Actually,” he began again, “Draco would be just fine. I usually don’t give my apprentices that privilege, but you’re a special case.” She laughed, then teasingly asked, “And why would I be the one exception?” It took a second before Draco gave her that look of his that made all women melt. After he had sufficiently silenced her, Draco rose from his chair and strolled to the door, leaving it open for her. “Shall we get down to business?” he said. She nodded and walked out of the open door.

As they walked in silence down the corridor, Agyness noticed something a bit unnerving, but also a bit comical. She and Draco were matching. The only difference was that he was wearing a head-to-toe fitted black suit instead of a dress. “We could pass for a well-to-do wizarding couple, depending on the scenery,” she humorously thought to herself. As they walked, the door to Hermione’s office was ajar. A janitor was in there doing a bit of tidying up while the room’s occupant was away. Through the open door, Draco and Agyness could catch a wide view of Hermione’s bulletin board, plastered with villains of old and new. Agyness noticed Draco slightly wince as they passed by. She thought of asking, but knew it was better not to ruin her first day of work with a rude question.

They reached the elevator, stepped inside, and the doors closed. The only sound was the soft jazz music that emanated from a speaker on the ceiling. Draco made no move to press a button, but instead commanded, “Take my arm.” He stuck out his right arm in front of Agyness, to her bemusement. “What?” She responded. “Just do it,” He ordered. She half-willingly complied and waited for his next move. Suddenly, it felt as if Agyness was being compacted from all sides. That was a feeling that usually accompanied…

“We’ve apparated!” Agyness almost whispered, pleasantly surprised. It was beautiful. They were now in a meadow. There were many trees surrounding them, one with a beehive hanging from it and singing birds in the others. A soft breeze made the brownish-green grass rustle slightly and some smooth, green leaves fall from their high branches. The sun shone so brightly the glare was almost blinding. As Agyness stood in amazement, Draco stood off to the side under the shade of a tree, his arms crossed across his chest and evidently pleased with himself. As Agyness traipsed over to him with a smile playing on her lips, she asked, “Care to explain?”

“Well,” he began, “This is a Ministry practice site. Some people from the Department of Magical Games and Sports come to play Quidditch, potioneers come here to experiment with concoctions that might be dangerous if used elsewhere, and,” he took a dramatic pause, “aurors come here to train.” “Okay,” Agyness nodded, and now beneath the shade of the tree she sat on a boulder, “What was with the elevator, and why haven’t muggles discovered this place and turned it into a housing project or something?” “Oh,” He began with a chuckle, “the elevator was just a bit more sport for my own sake. And as for those bloody muggles,” Agyness cringed, as she was a half-blood, “the same charm that was placed on Hogwarts is in effect here. If any non-magical person approaches, it looks like No Man’s Land. Muggles just assume that there are some buried mines from a long ago battle, so they leave and go on with their business rather than risking losing a limb.” “Just as I thought,” She absentmindedly answered as she examined a bird feeding its chicks. “Then why did you ask?” Draco spat, perturbed that he wasted some of his precious breath for nothing. “Oh, just a little bit of my own sport…” She responded, now looking at him with an amused grin.

“Fine then,” Draco sputtered, not knowing whether to be annoyed or amused, and began to briskly stroll out into the middle of the meadow, his sleek blond hair glistening in the sun. “Let’s begin.”

Yet another amazing chapter!
I really love how descriptive you are with the characters and their environment! I also like this Draco, he seems to still be his proud old self but still maintains a sense of humor.
Anyway, can't wait for more!

Ch 3
Agyness followed his lead and took her position on the opposite side of the meadow. “We’ll begin with a duel,” Draco said with a leer on his face, “Do try to be careful… I wouldn’t want to mess up your pretty little face,” he derisively warned. Agyness whipped out her wand, “Same to you…” “Ladies first,” He stated, mockingly making a bow. Making a false curtsey was all Agyness could do rather than making a statement that could cost her the job.

“Levicorpus!” She cried, hoping to catch him off guard with a simple yet effective spell. Draco simply hopped to the side and instead of he, a boulder was flipped upside-down. “Let me guess, practice shot?” He said with a smile, obviously trying to provoke her. Shaking off her irritation, Agyness nodded and gritted her teeth while staring at the ground; she didn’t want his gorgeous yet infuriating face to cause her to go mad.

“Incendio!” She began, flinging her wand into his direction. “Rictusempra!” He shouted back, barely missing the flame that would have caused his suit to set on fire. Hanging onto a tree branch and barely missing the spell, she called out, “Stupefy!” which Draco dismissed with the cry of, “Protego!” and of another spell. The throwing of hexes and curses went back and forth across the field for quite a while, as they circled closer and closer to each other.

As they were merely four feet away from each other, the pair yelled, “Expelliarmus!” in unison. Both of their wands went flying in the opposite directions. Seeing nothing else than their own wands, Draco and Agyness sprinted toward their weapons, hoping to reach their own before the other did. While in a mad dash, they both slammed into each other and fell into a heap onto the green grass. “Ouch,” Agyness spoke, rubbing her head, flat on her back. She looked skyward and saw that Draco was directly on top of her. For a split second, they stared into each other’s eyes, both speechless. Draco then rolled off of her and gracefully stood up, brushing off his suit.

“Nice match,” Draco began professionally, helping her up and trying to ignore what had just happened. “Yes,” Agyness replied, picking up her wand, her head spinning from their close encounter. Without speaking, Draco held out his arm. Agyness immediately grasped it and felt as if she was being pressed, and pressed, and pressed until…

They were now in Draco’s office. The fire still roared in the dimly lit room. In a silver-framed, ancient-looking mirror, Agyness saw that she was a mess. Her hair stood up at odd angles and her dry-cleaned dress was now in wrinkles, while Draco still, impossibly, looked like a god. With the swish of her wand, Agyness was transformed to her earlier appearance, prim and proper. Draco had still not said a word.

“Um… I’ll see you tomorrow?” Agyness dared to speak; unsure of what was going through his mind. Without facing her, Draco simply made the movement of stiffly nodding his head. She was dismissed. Agyness quickly strolled out of his office, quietly shutting the door behind her.

It was close to midnight when Draco had finally stepped out of his office, locking the door with his wand behind him. After he had gone to Harry Potter’s, the Head Auror’s, office to drop off some papers, he apparated home, still absorbed in his thoughts.

Draco had apparated to the front steps of his elegant, seaside mansion. He turned to take a look at the crashing waves, black under the dark, starry sky. A ray of moonlight made a path across the unsteady water. After a minute of gazing at the landscape, Draco turned to unlock his front door. Barely turning the knob, a female house elf with a large nose and a wide wrinkled face appeared at his feet. It’s clothing was not quite in tatters, but also not quite good-as-new. “Anything Mr. Malfoy needs after a long day at work?” the elf squeaked as it stared up at Draco with its wide, gray eyes. “Some brandy please, Binka,” Draco replied, sluggishly making his way toward the large living room.

After falling onto the sleek, leather couch, Binka almost immediately appeared at his side, placing a tray with a wine glass and a full bottle of brandy on top of the glass coffee table. With a wave of Draco’s hand, Binka was gone, being dismissed to her closet in the house. Draco grabbed the wine glass in one hand and the bottle of liquor in the other. After a minute of pondering, Draco set the wine glass back onto the tray and began to drink deeply from the brandy bottle.

“Bloody Granger,” Draco thought, “I can’t even walk past her office without seeing those pictures of my parents and convulsing. I’d bet she’s damn proud that she’s the one that gave them the life sentence in Azkaban. Bet she’s damn proud that they died there, too. The only one that I have is Aunt Bella, who’s serving her life sentence... It doesn’t even matter, she was already mad before she was sent to Azkaban.

“Speaking of being mad, I’m about to be unless I can figure out this Agyness girl. Usually when I train female newbies, I seduce and destroy. What the hell happened today?! When we had that one moment, where we were so close, I... I didn’t know what to do! Part of me wanted to stay there, the other wanted to get the hell away. What–is–wrong–with–me?!”

Draco took another deep swig from the liquor bottle, having already halfway drained it. He had lived a lonely life. A part of him sensed that it would not be that way for much longer.

Ch 4
The workweek passed much the same as Monday had. Hermione, Harry, and Ron sent many letters to Agyness, continuously warning her about her mentor. Agyness and Draco dueled everyday, Draco winning every time until finally, Agyness beat him on Friday. Draco was silent for most of the week, not speaking unless giving Agyness pointers or complimenting her skills. Other than that, he was as personable as a rock.

It was Saturday morning, and the sun blazed through the silk-curtained window in Agyness’s bedroom. The night before, Agyness had pondered about Draco’s drastic behavior change. How could a person go from being flirtatious one day to being downright surly for the rest of the week? However, this morning Agyness had only one thing on her mind: a girl’s day out with Luna. Luna Lovegood had been one of her best friends at Hogwarts, seeing as they had both been in the same year, in Ravenclaw, and semi-loners. It was through Luna that Agyness met Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville, and so many others.

After Agyness dressed herself, she examined her body from head to toe in the mirror. She scrutinized her skinny jeans, high-topped white Converse, and purple v-neck tee. She did this every time before she and Luna got together. Agyness felt in someway overdressed when they hung out. Maybe it was because of Luna’s eccentric sense of style. After brushing her long, chocolate brown hair and positioning her bangs, there was a ‘pop!’ in the corner of the bedroom. Agyness turned to see Luna sitting cross-legged on her bed, wearing a long, brown peasant skirt, a lime-green, sequined tank top, leather sandals, and Ray Ban sunglasses. Her long, blond hair fell down her back almost to her waist. “Nice way to make a grand entrance,” Agyness remarked jokingly, grabbing her black, leather messenger bag and slinging it over her shoulder. “Thank you,” Luna replied with a smile on her face, making a curtsey. “So, where exactly are we going?” Agyness inquired as Luna rose from the mattress. “Hogsmeade, of course…” Luna answered, “The perfect place to spend the day. Food and entertainment all in one. Much better than a Muggle place, at least…” Agyness laughed, remembering when she had taken Luna to a shopping mall and how she had hated it. Luna wondered why nobody wore cloaks or pointed hats, why the mannequins didn’t move, and why the animals in the pet shop didn’t spit fire or speak English.

After Agyness finished her sniggering, she and Luna apparated to the Main Street of Hogsmeade. It was already beginning to fill with witches and wizards of young and old. “Where should we begin?” Agyness asked, staring around the familiar yet now foreign place. “The joke shop, of course!” Luna immediately answered. She linked arms with Agyness and they began to trot down the cobbled street.
-----
“C’mon, Blaise. What do you have to lose?” Draco persuaded from across the wooden table. He was sitting across a table from his former crony, Blaise Zabini, in The Three Broomsticks. Blaise was the one who had given Hermione false information about Macnair’s whereabouts by telephone. Blaise was responsible for leading Harry, Ron, and Hermione on a wild goose chase for Macnair. Draco had gotten together with Blaise for one reason: to find out Macnair’s real whereabouts and tell Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The only thing was, Draco had to try to make Blaise believe that he was still on the dark side and trying to help Macnair.

“I’ve told you already, Draco,” Blaise began after taking a swig of his second firewhiskey, “No one trusts you after you’ve gone all goodie-two-shoes, working for the Ministry and with that Muggle-loving scum. Either way, why do you care where Macnair, the ‘crazed ex-Death Eater who has been on the loose for three years’,” He raised his fingers to quote a recent newspaper article, “is hiding out at?” “Because,” Draco began, sipping some of his own firewhiskey, “I can help him. You know how many estates that I inherited from my parents, all scattered across the globe. Instead of hiding out in a cave, he can hide out in any one of my manors. Friends don’t let friends evade the law without doing it in style.” Draco smirked, hoping Blaise would take the bait. “Well… still, I don’t know,” Blaise began to rise from his seat, slightly tipsy from the heavy liquor.

“Tell you what,” Draco began, trying to rise with him nonchalantly, “Why don’t I prove to you that I’m still on your side.” Blaise widened his gaze, listening intently. “Um… okay,” Blaise spoke, taken off guard, “I’ll get back to you on that.” Blaise turned to unsteadily wobble out of the pub, still pondering about what evil he was going to force Draco to do.

Draco stood in silence for a minute, wondering if he had done the right thing. “Is it worth risking my own neck for the sake of capturing Macnair?” He thought, as he strolled to the door. Before pushing the great wooden door open, he caught a glimpse of Blaise on the sidewalk. Draco stepped away from the door and closer to the dirt-rimmed window in order to get a better look.

Ch 5
Once scanning the scene, Draco knew what Blaise was up to. There was a young, petite girl staring into a shop window, and he knew that it was time for one of Blaise’s favorite games: have some sport with the female. Draco decided that he would watch, knowing that it would be much more interesting because Blaise was drunk.

Draco saw Blaise approach the young woman, and she swiftly turned around. She had an expression on her face as if she had been insulted. Blaise no doubt towered over her, but in his drunken state, the girl could tip him over with the push of a finger. Draco saw that Blaise had leaned in closer and put his hands on her shoulders, pressing her against the glass of the shop window. The young woman proceeded to push Blaise away and stalk off in the direction of The Three Broomsticks, the look on her face one of disgust. After recovering from almost toppling over, Draco could hear Blaise shout, “Catch ya later, babe!” before stumbling off in the other direction, almost tripping over his own two feet.

Draco sniggered. He had seen Blaise do this countless times, but never before had he been drunk. After his laugh, Draco realized that the girl was about to stalk by the window of The Three Broomsticks and he leaned forward to get a better look at her. The girl swiftly passed, her long, straight, chocolate hair flowing behind her in a fury. Even through the look of revulsion plastered onto her face, there was no doubt in Draco’s mind that it was her. Agyness. Thoughts began to race through his head.

“No! No, No, No! Why Agyness! Why now? I should talk to her-” He made a move towards the door, “No, Blaise will see me! Blaise, that—that—why did it have to be her?!”’

Draco stopped to compose himself. “What the hell is wrong with me?!” Draco thought and almost said aloud.

“Dear, are you staying or going?” Madam Rosmerta asked from the bar, a motherly tone to her voice and a worried look on her face. She had seen Draco seemingly arguing with himself for the past few minutes. “Goodbye.” Was all that Draco stoically said as he pushed the door open and proceeded to walk down the cobbled street. After a minute of walking and thinking, he apparated home to his empty mansion, ready for some more hard liquor.
-----
Agyness stared through the window of Quality Quidditch Supplies, admiring an expensive golden snitch that was supposed to be so fast that it was almost invisible. She and Luna had parted ways all the way back at Zonko’s Joke Shop. Luna had caught the interest of an eccentric, young, bespectacled wizard and they had hit it off immediately. Agyness had left the two to go off to Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor on what Agyness had considered to be a date. “Good for Luna,” She thought, a smile forming on her face. Luna had never received much male attention and even though she didn’t show it, Agyness could tell that she craved it.

“So much for our girls’ day out,” She muttered to herself, almost sad that she was alone. “Need some company, beautiful?” In the shop window, she saw the reflection of a tall, thin man wavering behind her as she heard those slurred words. Agyness turned to face the pompous prude, ready to draw her wand if necessary. He had dark skin, high cheekbones, and black, catlike eyes. He looked somehow like the older brother of a Slytherin she had gone to school with. Or, was it the Slytherin that she had gone to school with?

“Still haven’t answered my question, darling…” Blaise slurred as he placed his hands on her shoulders. The force of his action caused her to lean back, her spine now pressed against the sleek panes of the shop window. Agyness was surprised by the strength with which the drunken man gripped her and the hint of mischief in his voice. Blaise was not a large man, but considering Agyness’s petite frame it looked as though a drunken bear had its large paws on a kitten.

“You’re too lovely to be left alone,” He breathed into her face. Agyness shuddered as she smelled the liquor on his breath and saw his eyes scan her figure. With a rush of audacity, Agyness gathered her strength and gave the drunken man a hard push, almost landing him in the cobbled road. Without waiting to see his reaction, she stalked off with the hope that he wouldn’t recover fast enough to come after her. Agyness heard him holler after her but was too flustered to pay attention to the words or turn to look at the disgusting wizard.

After she had walked to a satisfactory distance, she apparated back to her apartment; ready to curl up into bed and drown out her thoughts by blaring music through her stereo.

Ew Blaise you drunk. -Pokes him- =|
Poor Agyness! & I thought Draco would be kind enough to come to her rescue! I guess not. Can't wait to see what happens next, though, and if Draco's secret mission will succeed...

Ch 6
It was Monday morning, and still no sign of the trio’s return or the successful capture of Macnair. Agyness was prepared to face the dullness that she had encountered for the majority of the last week. She meandered down the hall of Level Two, a sullen look plastered onto her pale features. When she reached the door of Draco’s office, she stopped to ponder about what to do next. He hadn’t given her the courtesy of greeting her, or of barely even speaking to her, for most of last week; so why should she knock before entering? As she raised her hand to make contact with the doorknob, the knob turned as if someone was moving it from the other side.

Standing directly across the doorframe was no other than Draco. Much to her surprise, he had a grin on his face. And it didn’t look forced. “Good morning,” He said cheerfully, pretending not to notice her astonishment. Draco knew that he had been unpleasant and was determined to make it up to her. Agyness, wondering if his kindness was just a ruse, lazily held out her arm without speaking a word, ready to apparate to the meadow. “Oh, we’re not dueling. We’re going over the more practical aspects of the job today.” He spoke. “Sorry to disappoint you,” Draco added when he noticed that her frown deepened. He happily noticed that her beautiful facial features were not distorted, no matter how much she tried to act displeased. “Sorry that I didn’t have a chance to kick your **** today,” Agyness muttered under her breath.

Pretending not to hear, Draco stepped aside to let her pass into his office. She swiftly passed him and strode into a black-leathered chair. Draco couldn’t help but notice that she smelled of lavender. He strode into the chair behind his desk and took a long, hard look at her. Was she truly angry with him for his behavior? Was it just a ploy? He couldn’t tell. She sat so stoically, with her legs crossed, her arms tightly gripping the chair’s sides, and her mouth still hardened into a frown.

“I’m sorry, okay?” Draco leaned across the desk towards her, his face revealing his guilt. “I behaved very rudely last week.” Agyness had not moved a muscle. “Anything you want to add?” She remarked through gritted teeth. “Um… I’m sorry for treating you disrespectfully.” He responded, hoping that this apology would satisfy her. Agyness loosened the grip on her chair and stopped frowning, still looking slightly stoic. “I promise to maintain a respectful, business-like relationship with you,” Draco spoke, reaching his hand across the table towards her. At this gesture, Agyness felt his remorse and tentatively leaned toward the desk. She quickly shot her hand across the desk to shake his. When their hands touched, it felt like an electric shock. They both quickly pulled away, shocked at the connection.

“So,” Draco began pulling parchment from his desk, “Today I’m going to be asking you some practical questions.” “Sounds easy enough,” Agyness remarked, leaning on the desk and positioning her arms in a relaxed way. She had it in the bag; Ravenclaws were definitely the best in academics, especially when it came to “practical questions.” Draco skimmed the first piece of parchment, took a breath, and asked, “What is the best manner in which to interrogate a criminal?”

“Veritaserum,” Agyness promptly answered, straightening her posture and sitting as alert as she used to during class at Hogwarts. “Correct.” Draco smiled, knowing that only a person as thick as a troll would have missed that one. “Or you could show him a little leg,” She murmured cheekily, wondering how he would react. “Next question,” He began again, his lips curling into a grin, “In what ways would you be able to pursue a suspect underwater?” “Hm…” She paused for a moment, and then began, “You can use the bubblehead charm, eat gillyweed, or transfigure yourself.” She smiled at her own words, remembering the Triwizard Tournament when she was in her third year.

“You remember?” Draco inquired, lowering the parchment as he noticed her absentmindedly grinning. “Of course I – wait. How did you know that I went to Hogwarts?” Her eyes slightly narrowed as she spoke, curious. “It was in your job resume, love.” Draco swiftly responded. With the flick of his wand, a file zoomed into his hand. It was labeled “Prince, Agyness”. “Oh,” She replied softly, her cheeks blushing a light shade of pink. Why didn’t she think of that before? Maybe she had been too occupied studying Draco.

Ch 7
Agyness strolled into the Ministry the following day, ready to face a torrent of more “practical questions”. As she approached the elevators, her hand traveled to the nape of her neck to run her fingers through her long ponytail. Even though she didn’t want to admit it, for the past week she had been secretly missing the gentle flirtation that occurred with her and Draco on her first day of work. Sure, after Draco’s apology, yesterday had not been filled with the tense air that had occupied the week before. But it seemed as if Draco had lost interest, just like that. “He can have anyone he fancies,” Agyness thought, still nervously playing with her ponytail, “Why I would ever think he would fancy me…”

“Level two,” The smooth voice silkily spoke as the elevator reached the proper floor. Forcing herself to stop fidgeting, Agyness stepped out of the empty elevator and ambled down the dimly lit corridor, nodding to some aurors that she had made acquaintance with in the recent days. She passed Hermione’s office, number 7 as it were, and saw that the door was locked and the parchment-colored screen still hung over the door’s window. “Still out tracking Macnair,” Agyness sighed, her brown eyes becoming downcast at the sight of the empty workspace. Even though the initial reminders of caution from Harry, Ron, and Hermione had been a hindrance, she missed the sound of their voices and the sight of their faces. She had not received any correspondence from them other than the single letter from Hermione on her first day of work.

Agyness finally reached office 13, taking a slight breath before turning the golden knob and entering. “Good morning,” Draco looked up from a stack of assorted files that were askew on his desk, flashing her a winning smile from his seat behind his desk. “Hi,” She found herself smiling back, even though in her heart she felt like frowning. “What are we doing today? More questions?” She asked, her Ravenclaw-self almost eager to take on another oral test. “Reviewing some files of some criminals, just to familiarize you with certain auror affairs,” Draco pushed a few cream-colored folders towards her, “Pick any one you’d like to start with.”

“Another uneventful day,” Agyness thought as she took a seat, though putting a cheery face on for Draco. Grabbing a folder on her left, she opened it to reveal a picture of a maniacal-looking, dark-haired woman. The picture was almost ghastly to look at; with her pale skin and look of mockery on her face, she reminded Agyness of Medusa. “Bellatrix Lestrange,” Agyness read aloud, wanting to look away from the picture of the demented woman. After reading her list of crimes, Agyness spoke, looking up at Draco, “I remember her. She was in the Prophet almost weekly during my fourth and fifth year at Hogwarts.”

“She’s my aunt,” Draco bluntly stated, casting his eyes toward the cherry wood of the desk. Agyness resisted the urge to drop her jaw. Was this what Hermione had been trying to warn her about? That Draco’s aunt was a convict? “I’m not proud of it,” Draco boldly looked up at her blank face after a silence. Agyness’s lips parted to speak, but Draco raised a hand to stop her, “Don’t take pity or give me any of that rubbish sympathy. I know where I’ve come from and, like I said, I’m not proud of it. Now, if I was a dark wizard, do you think that I would be an auror?” Agyness smiled at his honesty and at his slight attempt at humor. “Aurors can go bad,” she joked, hoping to ease his strain. Draco managed to chuckle, “Right you are. Let’s continue.” The pair leaned over the cherry wood desk towards one another, both grinning and ready to explore more folders together.
----------
Agyness stepped into the corridor, laughing along with Draco as he locked the office door behind them. It had been a pleasant workday; just some light chat over files and an elegant lunch of croissants and caviar that had been brought to the office by Draco’s house elf, Binka. Agyness smiled to herself as she remembered how sweet it was of him to ask Binka to prepare a second serving for her. “Does she bring you lunch often?” Agyness questioned as their laughter died down. “Not quite,” Draco slowed his usual rampant pace to keep with hers, “I just asked her today; she was so nervous to hear that she was going to be visiting the Ministry.” “How adorable,” Agyness commented. Like Hermione, she had always thought of house elves as lovable creatures. However, she was unlike Hermione in the respect that she knew that house elves were their happiness when put to work, not set free.

Before approaching the end of the corridor and the turn onto the next one, Draco stopped walking. He seemed slightly demure before he spoke, “Agyness, I was just wondering…” He trailed off, unsure of how to continue. At these words, her eyes sparkled. “Yes?” Agyness answered, trying to keep the excitement out of her voice. Draco took a breath and began again, running his fingers through his blond hair, “Would-”

“Agyness!” The trio came almost sprinting down the corridor. Agyness turned in shock right before Ron scooped her up into a bear hug. “You’re back!” She squeaked as Hermione and Harry beamed at her. As Ron released her, Agyness recovered her breath and composure, straightening out her navy blue vest before speaking, “How did it go?” “Wonderfully!” Hermione answered, still smiling as she embraced Agyness herself, albeit more gently than Ron had. “We finally got that son of a-” Harry was cut off by Hermione’s offhand look.

“Why don’t we go down to Harry’s office and we’ll tell you all about it,” Hermione almost forcefully placed her arm around Agyness’s shoulders before turning her in the proper direction. “Sure, sure,” Agyness nodded as Harry and Ron led the way. As Hermione steered her towards the office, Agyness looked over her shoulder to see Draco stalking off in the opposite direction.

Another brilliant chapter. I love how you never waste words, as though you've weighed each one to see if it deserves to be included. I am really starting to warm to your Draco, so haughty and missunderstood. Keep it up!

Ch 8
“Does Mr. Malfoy need-?” The high squeak of Binka’s voice was cut off as Draco tossed his black coat straight at her. He stalked into his seaside mansion, still fuming over his utter failure. Taking the hint, as she had so many times before, Binka folded the large coat over her bony, wrinkled arm and scurried off to put it into a closet. Draco trudged up to his master bedroom, then turned sharply into his vast expanse of a bathroom.

He began to speak to himself, something he had not done for a very long time, “I’ve just got to grit my teeth and do it.” Draco took one look at himself in the glimmering mirror over the sink and vigorously loosened his tie, as if his collar was constricting his breath. He rolled up the sleeves of his white, button-up dress shirt to his elbows and turned the crystal knob on the marble counter to the left, causing a gush of sheer, cool liquid to cascade towards the basin that was the sink. He scooped up a fair amount of water in his cupped hands before rinsing his face with it. Draco looked up towards the mirror again at his reflection, some water droplets clinging to and some water droplets running down his face. “No, no…” His voice spoke in a trembling whisper, his heart beginning to beat faster the longer he looked at himself. A look a horror and disgust filled his face before he sprinted out of the lavatory, through his bedroom, and out onto the balcony overlooking the sea.

Draco firmly brought his palm to his forehead, reprimanding himself. He completely ripped his tie from his neck and flung it to the concrete of the balcony floor. He leaned onto the elegant marble railing, placing his head in his hands before he began to softly weep. After a short moment, he wiped the glistening tears onto his pale, bare forearm. Draco proceeded to undo a few of the top buttons of his white shirt before taking a deep breath, letting the cool, salty sea air fill his lungs.

“Dearest father,” Draco spoke derisively, a sneer on his lips. “Why do you haunt me so? Every time I take a look at myself, a damn good look at myself, I see you.” Ever since Voldemort’s demise, Draco had been plagued with visions, mostly nightmares, of his dark past. He relived, over and over, the scene of Dumbledore’s death, the mad tirades that his Aunt Bella would burst into, the fear that he saw in his mother’s eyes as he was branded with the Dark Mark, and most of all, the emotional and physical abuse that he received from his father. Whether he was being swore at, being beat with his father’s large, black, wooden walking stick, or suffering through the pain of his father’s Cruciatus curse, Draco had experienced a lifetime of what some people might consider ‘tough love.’ “That git never loved me; why I ever was so gullible to believe what mother told me…” He trailed off, his mouth curling into a slight smile as he recalled his youthful naïvety. Draco let his mind wander as he silently continued to watch the waves, black with night, crash against the nearby rocks and allowed the night air to cool him. After that moment, he straightened his form, running his long, thin fingers through his silky hair before returning to his bedroom.

Draco gently sat on his large, canopied king-sized bed. He kicked off his black leather shoes before lying on his back, his head resting on a large, white pillow. He placed his hands behind his head and laced his fingers, his pale blue eyes traveling towards the upper canopy of his bed as his body sunk into the plush, white sheets of Egyptian cotton. Before having his episode, a single thing had been on his mind since he had returned from the Ministry: Agyness. “If only Potter and pals hadn’t returned, if only-“ Draco interrupted his thoughts of disappointment and self-loathing. He spoke, “Like I said before, I’ve just got to grit my teeth and do it.”

A soft knocking pierced his thoughts, and Draco turned his face, now fully composed, towards the oaken door. “Come in,” He spoke, almost in a practiced fashion. Binka opened the door slowly, peeking through before scurrying to the foot of Draco’s bed and making a deep bow. Her scrawny arms were laden with Draco’s night-things: a silken black robe, cotton black slippers, and the like. “Would Mr. Malfoy like some liquor before the night’s end?” Binka offered as she set the items at the foot of his bed, her back still bowed as she hoped that he was in better spirits.

“Not tonight,” Draco looked up towards the ceiling again, a determined smile on his lips. “Not tonight.”
