The Marauders Map - Sa9+

Just another tale of how the Marauders Map could have been found by Fred and George...

As much as I would like to own them, all characters belong to JK Rowling.

This is my first fan fiction story, and it's a one-shot.

The Marauders Map

Green clouds filled the deserted corridor except for two small, ginger figures hiding around the corner, both holding their noses.
‘Any minute now...’ said the first, looking carefully around the corner for signs of movement.
‘RUN’ yelled Fred, and the twins set off back through the corridor with noses still held. Suddenly they ran to a halt.
‘Filch,’ Fred whispered as they saw a limping figure approach.
‘Darn’ George muttered under his breath.
‘Oh no, not this time, you can’t escape now’! Filch leered at the twins, gripping their ears. ‘My office, now’ he wheezed happily.
Fred and George looked at each other, Stupid Mrs Norris, always sneaking off to Filch.
Filch dragged them into his office. ‘Again,’ he snarled. ‘If this was back in the old days you wouldn’t even dare...’ Filch carried on grumbling, looking for something while the twins, slumped against the wall, looked around the large, dark room. George’s eyes flickered towards a draw named ‘Confiscated and highly dangerous.’ Fred had seen it too. The twins barely had to look at each other to know what to do. In a flash, George whipped a dungbomb out of his pocket and threw it. It landed right in front of Filch. Fred pulled the draw open, reached in, and grabbed the first thing he could find – just as Filch realised the smell was a dungbomb.
‘Leg it!’ George shouted, throwing the door open and running through the still clouded corridor with Filch and Mrs Norris right behind them.
After two minutes of sprinting all around Hogwarts, the twins reached the Fat Lady but with Filch still on their case.
‘Flobberworm’ both of them said in unison, leaping through the portrait hole and into the crowded common room.
‘We’d better go upstairs,’ Fred panted. ‘Filch could get through the hole if he heard the password.’
Fred and George ran up the stairs into their empty dormitory, where they collapsed onto their beds.
‘What d’you get?’ George asked after several minutes.
‘Oh,’ Fred replied, sitting up, ‘this.’
George slid off his bed and went to sit next to his twin. ‘What is it?’ he asked, looking at the piece of old, blank, grubby parchment.
‘No idea.’
‘It must be something, to have been in that drawer,’ George mused, taking it from Fred and unfolding it a little. ‘But it’s –’
‘-completely blank.’ Fred finished for him.
‘D’you think it will show itself with a spell maybe?’ George looked at the parchment, poking it with his wand.
‘I hope not,’ Fred replied, ‘we don’t exactly listen in lessons, do we?’

After a couple of hours poking and prodding the parchment while muttering random words, George lay back. ‘It’s no good’ he said, poking the map with his wand. ‘Hey!’ Fred yelped ‘how d’you do that?’
‘Do what?’ George looked up to see a small amount of the parchment was showing something .
‘Tell me how you did that,’ Fred said
‘ I dunno, I swear I didn’t say anything...’
Fred yelped again. ‘You’ve made more appear!’ and, sure enough, the parchment showed more lines and letters.
‘Maybe you’ve gotta get the right words,’ said George ‘No good, I swear, hmm...’
‘Ha!’ Fred replied ‘I swear I’m up to no good.’
It was George’s turn to yelp this time, ‘Fred, look!’ The parchment showed even more now and, as the twins unfolded it, they realised it wasn’t just any parchment; It was a map, a map of Hogwarts!
‘Look, there are people moving!’ Fred pointed out Lee Jordan, who the map showed was wandering round the library.
‘Lee said he was going to the library today,’ said George in awe. Fred and George unfolded the map on George’s bed, which it took up at least half of. ‘There’s still some missing though,’ George showed Fred a blank gap at the edge of the map. ‘We need another word in the phrase.’ This stumped the twins, who knew the word could be anything. After what seemed like ages trying out more words, they decided to have a break. After the map had been hidden, the twins wandered down to the common room, which was considerably emptier.

‘Hey Perce.’
‘What’cha reading?’
Percy looked up from at the twins, sighed and continued reading The Prophet.
‘No need to be rude,’ said Fred.
‘ Yeah Perce, let us see.’
Tired of losing many battles against the twins, Percy handed over his newspaper to the twins, who, unsurprisingly, took one look at the paper and put it down in deep disgust.
‘Seriously Percy, why are you reading about court trials anyway?’ George asked.
‘It’s actually very interesting,’ said Percy, matter-of-factly ‘perhaps you ought to read it too, you’ll probably end up having to swear to tell the truth to somebody in court at this rate...’ he added darkly.
‘Not interested,’ said George, flopping onto a chair, however, Fred, who was still behind Percy, hesitated. ‘Wait a sec...’ he said, grabbing the newspaper ‘swearing in court, I solemnly swear, you don’t think...?’
‘I do,’ replied George ‘let’s go.’
Percy sighed, not wanting to know what his twin brothers were up to now.
‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good,’ the twins said together, five minutes later, looking very excited. The blank area slowly filled itself with a classroom.
‘Yes!’ cried Fred
‘Awesome’ George said, leaning in, ‘y’know, we can tell where everyone in school is now...’
‘No more stupid Filch!’ Fred practically sang
‘Or Snape. Or McGonagall. Or Percy!’ George grinned, turning the parchment over, to reveal the words ‘Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are proud to present the marauders map. ‘The marauders map, wow!’ George sighed ‘all we have to do now is figure out how to deactivate it...’

The End
