Family, that word had never meant much to her, it was just the one thing she had always wished she had had. A normal happy family – but that wasn’t her story. Or at least, that was what she had always thought for all of the years of her life – that was what she had thought until that beautiful trip those years ago with Vincent.

All the times her father, and even her adoptive guardian had told her that she was worthless had made her question the importance of family. They were her family, her flesh and blood and they still had acted like she was a peon for the majority of her life. Colin, he’d only started treating her like a member of the family when she had been made Gryffindor prefect. She remembered hearing him boast about his precious little sister’s accolades to a friend when he had had hosted a family reunion.

Family, hadn’t truly meant anything until she had had Ellie. It meant more now with Quinn, and even more as she stood there the positive test strip held in her shaking hands. How was she going to do this? Tell him once more that they were once again expecting. It was days like this that she would wish for guidance from her mother, for a slightly happier past, a past that meant she had someone to share this with…but she didn’t, that wasn’t her story. She just had to hope and pray that she would do a better for her own little family.

The unforgettably unpleasantly acrid scent of the city had been the first thing to greet her. Still, here she was unable to move an inch as her eyes roamed over charmed building. Her heart hurt, it was as if someone had reached into her chest and squeezed it tightly the moment she had arrived. It had to be done, she had to be here. She had to say goodbye to let go.

Still, she didn’t know how.

It was more than that, she didn’t want to.

This tainted brownstone had been where her life had been shaped. This building, and the memories it held were why she was the way she was now – it was why her heart ached every spring. It was why whenever she saw them, kids with that broken look in their eyes. The look that someone who understood, someone that got it would understand. That smile that never reaches their eyes like they were simply trying to fool the world into thinking that they were happy.

Why did I come here alone?

Suddenly being here, being alone felt soul crushing. Her world had simultaneously started here and been doomed to be a broken shamble. “You’re worthless,” the words he had told her here had been seared into her soul like white hot brand that would never go away no matter how many people she collected, or things she did to help the world. No matter what she would always feel somewhat that his words were true that she wasn’t even worth the air she breathed. Why, was it that now twenty years later a part of her still missed him. Even though he never brought any semblance of happiness to her life, he had only broken her and yet here she stood. Outside of her childhood home wanting nothing more but for everything to have been different, for her father to have loved her the way fathers are supposed to love their children. “I shouldn’t miss you, but I do” she spoke the words as quietly as she ever could before reaching her hand out and tentatively reached her hand out for the doorknob. “Merlin, why didn’t I ask him to join?” she cursed under her breath as she thought of one of the strongest people she had ever known. The man she would always love and cherish like he were a part of her family. Right now, in her hour of need she desperately needed Cutty Mordaunt.

Her arms circled her stomach as she lay there on the ground, breathing in the scent of the earth below her. It was only here, in nature, that she was able to center herself. To feel everything she truly felt.

Her sister’s words played in the back of her head like a broken record. You should tell him that you are back, I’m sure he’d love it. Sure, she was probably right but how did she know? It wasn’t as if they had left on the best of terms. Maybe the stress and turmoil of living through Hogwarts had made him realize just how fragile and broken she had always been. Like a porcelain doll – fragile and ultimately fake.

Lifting her gaze toward the clouds dancing in the sky above her head she couldn’t help but sigh. “I am a mess” those words acted like a stopper, letting everything she had refused to say out of her with one simple sentence. “I love him” she announced to the sky her words barely audible over the rustling leaves in the trees. “I still love him, but he deserves better than this, than me.”

It had been ages since they had met all those years before in the magical menagerie, and it all came to this. Standing there in the mirror she couldn’t believe it – she was getting married. The soft smile tugging at Melbourne’s lips didn’t fully show just how happy she truly was, nor how special this moment was.

“You know you can go down the aisle as a Stout if you want to, I wouldn’t mind…I’m too happy,” Mel turned to look over at her cousin and best friend. The red brick building loomed in front of her, just the sight of it caused her skin to crawl. Spiders, it felt like spiders were crawling over her body – and that was never a good sign. “I don’t want to do this,…but I have to” her voice cracked as she stood there, it wasn’t as if she was talking to anyone.

After telling herself once more that she could do this, she walked forward and climbed the stairs of the first home she had ever known. The dust that seemed to flutter about as she stepped into the home would have made anyone sneeze, but for her it almost made her smile. No one had really been there, not since when Imogen had taken her to London all of those years ago.

The dust covered painting of her mother that still hung over the mantle caused her heart to ache. She hadn’t seen her face in years, so many years that she had nearly forgotten what she had looked like. The softness of her touch, and her voice had long been forgotten. ”I miss you mum,” she whispered to the painting as she stepped closer to her. “I’m sorry I never visit…but I’m taking you with me, we’re finally selling this place.” She told the portrait that would never respond as it had never been enchanted.

Her mother had refused, she had said those years ago that she didn’t need to be trapped in a moving painting…she had thought back then, that she’d be around much longer than she was. If her father were there, if he could have been a ghost or alive right now in that room with her Puck wouldn’t have known what to do or what to say.

Sure, she would have told him that despite him she had made a life for herself. She had was happily married with children of her own. Sure, Quinn wasn’t hers genetically but that didn’t matter to her. She just knew that Quinn, Ellie, and Vincent had made her life oh so much better…just as Bianca had made her life better those years before. They were her family.

They were the family he would never know – by her choice.

It was hard facing this reality; she had said things she hadn’t meant. She had practically told one of her best friends that they shouldn’t be friends anymore, and that was killing her slowly. It almost made breathing hard – each beat of her heart was excruciating. Each breath was torture. Like icy shards of glass were winding their way deeper into her soul, and she had to change that.

She couldn’t change it. She couldn’t take it back – she knew that it wasn’t like she could go back in time and change what she had said. Everyone knew that time travel was banned and dangerous – and she wouldn’t either. It wasn’t like what she had said was a lie, and that was what hurt the most.

It was just torture knowing that the friendship might have been over, all because of her ill-fated choice of words and her anger. So when every one of her friends would have been climbing aboard the train to Hogwarts she was here, sitting in a playground for kids clutching the chains of the swing so hard that it bit into her flesh. “I’m sorry,” she told no one at all, buts he knew one day, maybe she could say it to their face once she was brave enough. Once she was strong enough to face her new reality.

He was never kind, not really. That was what she told herself after his death – that was what she told herself as she held their children, her girls. It had been so long since she had really spoken to any of her friends about what had happened – but it was tough. Some days were worse, and some were better.

He had never been good to her, she reminded herself as she rocked the small baby in her arms. Even so, it would have been easier for her if she had been here – and that was tearing her apart bit by sorrowful bit. He would never know them, and that didn’t make her break, it made her feel stronger.

Even if her strength was fleeting, even if she wanted to run away and never face this cold reality again. It wasn’t her fault, she told herself that one more time as she rocked her green-eyed babes in her arms. Their small fingers clutching to her shirt.

She would be strong, for them. Even if it meant the death of her, even if it meant not seeing them as much as she wanted to. Imogen knew, in that exact moment as she kissed her youngest's head, that she would survive this, with the help of her friends. With Laurel's help, she could do anything.
