Default HoM Lesson #1 - The Most Noble & Ancient House of Black

It’s a cool autumn morning in Mid-September. The night before it had rained so the outdoor grass was still carried a thin film of water from the night before. Fortunately, dear student, this class is inside and not outside so you shouldn’t have to worry about walking outside and getting your shoes or the bottom of your robes damp.

When you walk into the classroom, you’ll find the room to be not too terribly exciting. The History of Magic classroom is set up in the normal classroom arrangement today... unfortunately... much to Professor Simon Holden’s disdain. He had gotten used to transfiguring and changing up his classroom so much that he had been struggling to find the perfect set for his stage for today’s lecture and activity.

So he decided to keep it simple. Professor Holden is waiting at the front of the classroom and is ready to greet his students. He stands next to five easels that are covered by a dark green - almost black - velvet like fabric. Perhaps these paintings will help articulate today’s lecture in full detail.

OOC: Welcome to first HoM class!! So excited to have you guys here

As I referenced in the entrance post above, this is not the first History of Magic class for the term.

If you are not familiar with the rules, please reference them here. Also any questions that you might have, please message me via PM throughout the lesson. I will be more than happy to answer them. I will update this post as we make progress.

History of Magic wasn't high up there up her list of classes that captured her attention a hundred percent of the time. It tended to be a touch on the boring side and all of the names and dates sometimes made her head hurt. No offense to Professor Holden or the previous professors, it just didn't hold her interest like some other topics is all.

However, that didn't keep her from come to her lessons and completing all of her work in a timely manner. Lia entered the classroom with a warm smile taking in its simplicity as she headed for the first empty seat that she saw. "Hello, Professor Holden," she greeted lightly.

Slipping down onto the empty seat, Lia quietly began to arrange her things on her desk for the lesson.

So - he was just going to rely on Atlas getting him through this class. That was the only way.

Speaking of…. where was his twin???

Not seeing him right away, Aries found himself right at the back. Easy to not be noticed there, yes?
HIS TWIN WAS RIGHT HERE! Or had Aries just not heard Atlas when he had said he needed to take a side trip to the loo?

Never mind. That was partly a rhetorical question.

The one thing among many that he shared in common with his brother was a real lack of interest in History of Magic. Sure, history was doomed to repeat itself and all other such bleak things (and finding patterns and connections was fun at times), there was a serious lack of hands-on-ness that came with the subject. Would be WAY cooler if History of Magic was just a series of field trips through the pensieve.

Also, a lot of his peers needed to get their hydration before class. Just saying.

In any case, Atlas had washed his hand thoroughly (in fact they were still dripping wet and flinging some slightly sudsy water this way and that as he offered Professor Holden a wave for a greeting) as he made his way to the classroom and found his seat beside his brother. "You were sure in a hurry to get here," he mumbled while setting his things out, including a spare bit of parchment placed between them with his books strategically placed between the parchment and professor. On the parchment were their usual tic-tac-toe and squares game. "Which do you want to do first?"

Apollo was here mostly because ... weirdly Professor Recard had found a way to make history of magic interesting ... and also it was a required subject. And thirdly, he was pretty sure if he DIDN'T show up to History of Magic class, their new professor would probably report directly to his mother considering they had been yearmates way back when.

So he was here and trying SUPER hard to be focused and ready. "Morning Si-- Professor Holden" He said, correcting himself. It was weird not calling him Simon and using Professor. So wait, if his parents yearmates (two of them) were teaching, that meant technically his mama could teach too?? Uh. No. Thank you.

It was a class he now actually found himself almost looking forward to so far, and Professor Holden was thus far decent as well.

Heading towards the classroom, Evan entered through the door way, robes adjusted to look best right outside the door and book bag over his shoulder, and he nodded and gave a small smile - something he was still working on - at the Professor. "Good morning, Professor." He paused briefly to look at the covered easels, curious if they'd be covering some type of art, before making his way to a desk and sitting down to set up his notes.

He was still glancing at those easels, his curiosity piqued.
Simon been eying the clock as the minute hand moved closer and closer to the hour hand so he hadn’t noticed Evan walk in until the boy greeted him. “Morning Mr. Nam! Good day, isn’t it?” Mr. Nam had a timely arrival indeed.

Oh.

Were they doing something artsy today? If so, then this was right up her alley. Claudine was somewhat happier to be in this lesson now. “Hi, Evan.’’ The Ravenclaw received a smile from her too as she slipped into the seat beside him.
Oh good! More students had gotten the memo. “Good Morning, Miss Blaze,” he greeted her with a nod.

"Good morning, Professor!" she said with a littttttle more eagerness than she meant, and she probably came off BUG-EYED rather than excited. "Hi Evan," she whispered, trying to get over the embarrassment of all...that. And taking a seat nearest the door.
Ah. Yes. Miss Gellar. He noticed the eager greeting which caused him to chuckle. He’d have to mention it to his wife later. “Good Morning, Miss Gellar!” he smiled.

Also. Professor Holden didn’t know he was THAT good looking. If he knew that’s what she thought, he would have been humbled.

Now Miss Fox seemed brighter than her usual self. Simon smiled to himself and nodded to her as she walked through the door. “Morning Miss Fox. Glad to see you’re in a good mood!” ‘Twas a nice change. Should he be worried?

Sighing she shoulder forward. "Morning Professor" her voice was loud enough to be heard but not rattle the windows, courtesy you know. "Claudine, Ash, Evan, Hey" She recognized their faces but was less familiar with the younger student (Victoria) but gave her a small wave before taking a seat.
If Simon was a mind-reader, he would have nodded in agreement with her sentiments. He also liked classes that he didn’t die in and liked them better when he wouldn’t die of boredom either. “Morning Miss Rivers.

Nem dropped into their seat, hooked a foot around the leg of their desk, and tilted the chair back a couple of inches. From their pocket they brought out a regular muggle pen, the extent of today's supplies, and turned it over in their fingers.
Ah Mr. Upstead had entered the room without word again... Simon watched them make their way to a seat, wondering what went through the seventh year’s mind. He hoped Nemesis was alright. Perhaps he ought to ask Trent about him in their next one to one. “Mr. Upstead,” he began before promptly adding, “Good Morning.

In the back of the room, Phoebe spotted an Upstead in the midst of being particularly Upsteady. Leaning back in her own chair, Phoebe made a grab for Nem's pen. "Pssst. Why are you like this?"
Miss James’ question brought a smile and a chuckle from Simon. “We could... I can promise that one of those objectives will be met today...” They’d get to the Goblin Rebellion at a later point in time but he was glad for the question.

She greeted the professor with a bright smile. "Good morning, professor." She took a seat somewhere near the front, super ready for class to begin.

Humming, he grabbed a seat near the front desk and settled all his things nice and tidy so the professor would know just how excited (and how cool) he was. "Hey, Professor Holden. Nice day, huh?" Ruari said, his tone totally (not) calm. he had not practiced that greeting, absolutely not. it was off the cuff, as natural as breathing. His quill was a deep crimson and it glided elegantly across his parchment as he wrote his name down in the upper right hand corner, his scrawl just untidy enough.

Glancing toward Lucky, Ruari gave his older brother a big, cheeky smirk. Yeah, they might have been in competing houses but they were still a team and he was sure he'd impressed the elder Fuller-Thompson with just how cool he was being.
Fuller-Thompson... .Simon was immediately transported in his mind back to his own school days when he’d head to Professor Fuller’s classes. Strange wasn’t it? Now he was the teacher and Fuller was the student. Age was a funny thing. “Mr. Fuller-Thompson. Good Morning!” He paused, folding his arms across his chest momentarily at the question. “Beautiful day. Nice and crisp. Unfortunately too damp to hold class outside.” Autumn was Simon’s favourite season at Hogwarts. Less miserable than winter.

She was here, though. A sigh leaving her lips as she stepped inside. She still didn't know how to feel about Professor Holden.

"Good morning, Professor." She was polite, though. After her little...incident in Africa...Serena had promised her parents she'd be an angel. As much of an angel an evil spawn could be. So really, there was no promise. It had been something to put them at ease.

Serena Baltazar-Dos Santos was no angel.

On her way to a random desk, she waved at her friends and sat down, her satchel landing on the table with a firm THUMP.
Morning Miss Balthazar-Dos Santos,” he said and momentarily gave a sigh of relief because he had remembered her name and nailed it. One of his biggest fears was not getting last names right and then it would lead to a WHOLE BIG AWKWARD SCENARIO. He watched her wave to some friends and then both eyebrows raised at the satchel thumping on the table. Did she put bricks in her bag?

Still better than the emotional-turmoil, sleepiness-inducing-boredom, no-magic-usage minefield that was History of FREAKING Magic. She'd pay 100 galleons to just read some books and take an exam at the end of the year.

It wasn't the new (or old) teacher's fault, really, it wasn't - but the fact remained that Eden was a lost cause.

"Good morning, Professor," the girl spoke as she walked past, straight to the back of the room. She took a spot a few desks away from Elder James and Creepiest Upstead (totally not planning on eavesdropping or anything, and totally not preemptively trying to get a close-by seat to any classroom interruptions, of course not) and took out the notebook she used for both History of Magic and Herbology. It was mostly filled with scribbles unrelated to either subject. She had taken the time before class to part her hair into two loose pigtails so that she could fidget-braid throughout the lesson.
Hello Miss Tilly. Good Morning, I hope?” he offered her as he watched her enter the classroom and find a seat. Alright. Now would be a good time to do a quick roll call.

"Good morning, Professor Holden," she said as she surveyed the room, looking for a good place to sit. Was it okay if she sat in the back? She'd probably be able to see over people's heads. But...she decided not to risk it, and took a seat near the front next to Val instead.
Now where was his roster? He turned around briefly to look for it but then heard more footsteps approaching it. Turning back around, he found Miss Turov. “Morning Miss Turov. Beautiful day for a run,” he nodded.

But now that she had figured some things out, or was at least on the way to, she felt like a weight had just been lifted off her shoulders. That combined with trying to be more open with her friends was a recipe for not stressing out about everything all the time. And since she was able to stay at her Gram's for most of the summer, she didn't have to deal with her parents and could actually talk with her friends. Were things....actually looking up? For once?

Well....so long as this term actually turned out to be normal... everything would be just about perfect.

She wore her pink bracelet on her wrist to make sure everyone was aware of the pronouns she was currently using—much easier than having to be asked and offer an answer every time they changed. "Good morning, Professor!" she said with a smile, scanning the seats. She made a move to go sit by Eden, but sighed upon seeing who she was sitting near. She pursed her lips and gave Eden a look, but still made her way over to the seat next to her. Quinn made a point of having her nose upturned from Upstead, flicking the hair she had been growing out as she sat (the hair wasn't too terribly long yet, but it was a fair length for being grown out for about half the summer).

As Quinn sat facing the front of the class, she was totally not checking out the professor or anything like that. You know, just... casually watching. Rather intently. But not, you know, weird or anything!!!! Hahahahaha... not weird. Just a little pink in the cheeks.
Morning Miss Kingsley,” he greeted the Ravenclaw before watching her sit with her friends. He did notice the slight dusting of pink on her cheeks. Was the room too warm or had she run here?

But she liked other things! Like. Um. Like that one time she saved Phoebe’s face and… Oh! Her sense of style and that one lesson about the triwizard tournament - Kins remembered paying attention during that one in particular. So it was just a little weird that she wasn’t teaching anymore.

Kins was open to the change though, believe it or not. And it especially helped that their new Professor was so pretty. Sometimes Kinsay liked to stare at him instead of answering questions… Though usually she stared at him and asked her own questions, which was kind of a win-win. For Kizzy. In any case, his pretty face made history less terrible and Kins appreciated that lots. So, thanks!

She walked into the classroom only ~somewhat~ sleepy and unwilling to learn about ancient old men that she wouldn’t ever care about (no offense to them, but when would they learn about feminist history!) - but all that changed as soon as she saw the covered easels. Her face lit up like a whole Christmas tree as she looked from one easel to the next. "Hi Professor.” She really, really, really hoped they’d be getting to do art today. "Are we painting?” Because. "It’d be so fun to paint epic scenes from history, don't you think?" She quickly added this as an afterthought in hopes of changing his mind in case the answer to her original question was “no”. She wasn’t trying to be tricky or anything! Just covering her bases.

Um. Anyway. Now for the most important part of any lesson: choosing the right seat.

Evan and Claudine had good spots, so Kins briefly considered sitting by them. But. Ash was there too and … no thanks. She didn’t want to sit by the door like V because sometimes it took her a long time to pack up all her things and then there’d be a crowd and she’d feel rushed at the end of the lesson. She couldn't sit next to first years (sorry, Ruari) or people she didn't know (no offense, Serena and Ollie) or Charlie because ... actually she didn't have a reason not to sit next to Charlie, but she just didn't want to. Phoebe’s seat was dangerously close to where Eden and Quinn were sat, so that was a big no. Huge no. Hugest no. And she couldn’t very well sit in the back, she needed optimum hand visibility for any inevitable questions.

But. Also. Was Nem okay? He was looking kind of funny lately. But not a good funny. Kind of a bad funny. But not in an ugly way - he's still handsome. Just a ..... worrisome way.

Kins didn’t mean to look as concerned as she did when she looked his way. But. But sometimes her face just happened. Things needed to be felt. She couldn’t help it! Um. Quickly realizing that she had been standing for far too long, Kinsay opted for a seat near Mamie and Val (saving the empty seat beside her for Emm, of course) (besties).
Miss James’ suggestion brought a smile to his lips. He always loved when students asked questions because he was once a curious young insect as well. “Painting is a solid guess. That’s a brilliant idea for a homework assignment,” he nodded as his brain started working through a couple of ideas for the next lesson. He’d need to jot that down in a notebook.

The. assigned. reading. was. cool. So articulate.

Still sporting a smile, the Ravenclaw trudged over to sit near his rock, Phoebe. It was fine. He was fine. His cheeks weren't flushed with color, that was just the lighting.
Hello Mr. James,” nodded Simon in return to the ‘hey’ and was about to lecture the boy on the casual greeting but stopped himself when he mentioned that the assigned reading was cool.

He read the assigned reading?

Very good. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Professor Holden seemed relatively simple to adapt to his methods. Maybe a bit particular, but that was expected. Lots of Hogwarts professors had particular proclivities. “Good morning, Professor Holden,” she greeted the man, giving him a smile before considering her seating options. “Are we learning art history today?,” she added, with a glance toward the easels before making her way over to a seat near the James twins. And Nem, it seemed. They all got a smile too, while she prepared herself for the lesson.
He nodded to Miss Abbott-Daniau. ”A form of it, yes, Miss Aboot-Daniau,” he smiled. Well perhaps it would be their medium of telling the history.

The Gryffindor finally smiled at the professor. "Good morning, Professor Holden." She greeted, then looking at the covered up easels. Nothing exciting about that so far. Remy held her quill and started to doodle as she waited for class to start.

Maya was a big fan of ordinary. "Good morning, Professor Holden," Maya said politely, scanning the classroom and trying to figure out where she should sit this class. That seemed to be the obvious direction to go in, however, the Slytherin found herself a seat towards the front of the classroom where Valentina, Kinsay & Margaret were already sitting. After the tutoring from the summer with Margaret, she just wanted to make sure her notes were easily accessible if needed.

"Good morning, ladies," she greeted before pulling out her notebook. There was nothing quite like starting the day off as normal. Even if there was time for the class to go disastrously wrong since the contents of the easels up front remained hidden.
Simon was a fan of reading to learn everything you could but he would have been slightly displeased at Maya’s insinuation of if people read more than they wouldn’t need History of Magic class. He would have insisted her coming up to the front of the class to prepare a decisively persuasive argument about her point of view. “Miss Nam.

"Did you mean it back then?" he asked before realizing that he should elaborate on his question for him to understand. "That I can borrow some books from your office?" 'cause the reading material he took with him from home was getting thinner and the library only had so many books about detective stories.
Ah yes, he was familiar with the next student. They had, after all, met in the Entrance Hall. “Good Morning, Mr. Yoon,” he said. He was half expecting the boy to continue on his way so he raised both eyebrows when he approached him for a second time. He was only slightly confused by his question before the boy elaborated and he nodded. He was more than happy to share his detective stories with anyone who asked especially with someone who was a love of thrillers and mysteries. “I did mean it. You should stop by the office to collect them.” Books and history were meant to be read and shared.

History of magic was by far, the gyffindor's least favorite subject. To his relief as in most history lessons the classroom was well a normal classroom. However he did not recall it being an art classroom.

The professor who knew his parents, wasn't bad either. "Hello Professor Holden." As he passed the front of the classroom. Perking around the easels before taking a seat in the back of the room.

Another one with a name that reminded him of one of his former Professors. It gave him shivers. Culloden. “Mr. Culloden. Welcome.

Speaking of…. where was his twin???

Not seeing him right away, Aries found himself right at the back. Easy to not be noticed there, yes?
Now he had not been expecting a bare minimum greeting from a Flamsteed. He tilted his head to the left, wondering if he was alright. “Morning Mr. Flamsteed.

It was just… Recard had been his favorite professor, and he never thought she’d leave Hogwarts before him. Never mind… it was what it was.

Heath shook his head to clear his thoughts as he stepped inside the room. The first thing he noticed was the normal-looking classroom setup which, based on everything he’d seen of this class so far, was unusual in and of itself. Then his eyes fell to the easels at the front of the room. Hmm… he wondered how those would come into play, but he supposed he’d have to wait and see. After eying the easels with curiosity for a moment, his gaze turned to the professor. “Good morning, Professor Holden,” he greeted, giving a polite nod in acknowledgement.

Dark eyes scanning the room, he beelined for a seat near Evan, Claudine, and Ash. “Hey, Evan, Ash, Claudine,” he greeted, nodding to each person in turn, and there may have been a slight smile for the girlfriend. He slung his bag over the back of his chair and retrieved his supplies, neatly arranging them on the desk in front of him as he waited for the lesson to begin.
Simon knew he had some large shoes to fill with Recard leaving. He wished he could have had more time to ask her questions about the students and school in general but alas they had not. “Good Morning, Mr. Jones,” he nodded.

Miss Donovan. Welcome. Morning,” he nodded to the Ravenclaw.

Simon couldn’t help the amused smile that crossed his lips as sudsy water made its way towards him as young Atlas waved. Hmph. Oh to be young. “Welcome Mr. Flamsteed.

So he was here and trying SUPER hard to be focused and ready. "Morning Si-- Professor Holden" He said, correcting himself. It was weird not calling him Simon and using Professor. So wait, if his parents yearmates (two of them) were teaching, that meant technically his mama could teach too?? Uh. No. Thank you.
Simon offered Apollo a small smile when he almost called him by his first name. He had expected it would take some time to get used to this because he was friends with his mother. “Morning Mr. Adara-Stark”.

With that, he took one more look out the door and decided it was time to start the lesson. Yes, last student in. With a flick of his wand, he closed the door and dimmed the lights just slightly before making the light closest to him the brightest one. Yes, some good fashioned theatrical lighting that added a nice warm hue to the dark emerald almost black velvet cover ups over the easels.

He had to say that because y’know Hogwarts was dangerous and he was a veteran. “Let us begin with today’s lesson.” He cast his hand over to the easels behind him. “Now the easels may contain a painting that has an important event, person, or thing from history. In a moment, I will reveal them... but first... Can one of you tell me what is the relationship between art and history? What can art teach us about history?

OOC: Hello folks! Sorry it took me a moment to get this up. Totally underestimated my last work call for the day. So so happy to see that you all are here - very excited to take you through this class. But for now- feel free to answer the question and have fun with it. What’s the relationship between art and history? What can we learn from both? What can art teach us about history? I’ll give the class 24 hours and we’ll move on to the next question and activity.

Kinsay offered a tiny wave to Maya, before turning around to make a silly face at Pheebs and Teddy. She'd make it a point to bug them at least once in every single lesson until the end of the year so as to make their seventh year classes more memorable. Or. Something.

But she did turn back to face the front of the room as Professor Holden posed his first question. While Kins was still bummed that they wouldn't be painting during the lesson, this question elicited all sorts of excitement and she almost jumped out of her seat when her hand shot straight up into the air. Pick Kinsay! Pick Kinsay! Pick Kinsay!

History was usually a boring subject, but if they talked about art every time, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. She'd suggest that to Professor Holden maybe. "I think it can tell us a lot of things about history because things that are hard to put in words are easier to explain with art sometimes," she knew from experience. "Like feelings." No, especially feelings. "Even if it's not a moving portrait, art can still tell us stuff about how people felt, like with colors and facial expressions and. And symbolism - so it can help us experience the history with ... our emotions and not just the boring facts. The boring stuff only tells part of the story." She leaned forward, propping herself up on her elbows. "Art humanizes it." It was easier to care about history when Kins could see who was involved in it, you know?

Because sometimes the details didn't feel all that real because they were so out of reach, but when she could see the people, she could reaaaally imagine the stuff and it'd be more like the stories that Cooper told her. Or like real life.

Also? No questions this time. Just eager anticipation for what was to come mhm. This might've been a first.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Everyone better be enjoying the happy version of Ash right now. Because you never knew how long it would last. Hopefully a while. “I agree with Kinsay,” she said softly, avoiding looking at the other girl. “I always use art when I want to tell someone something that I can’t... or don’t want to... explain.” It was usually that it would be painful to explain. Ash figured she could explain things alright, except it just hurt too much to do so. Especially when the explanation involved feelings that she didn’t wanna voice. “Also... a good picture is worth a thousand words. And some things don’t have words for them yet, so the best you can do is show it.” There. That was it. That was why she loved art, and that was why she would probably like this lesson. She tapped her fingers on the desk. “Seeing how people felt during a historical event is really important. Because people act in according to their feelings a lot of the time.”

The Ravenclaw had muttered a quick, "beautiful day" to his Professor at the question as he sat. And from there, it didn't take long at all for Evan to get his things situated out on his desk, and by the time he had everyone else was entering and he could hear a couple greetings. He noticed Claudine slide into the seat next to him and smiled a greeting, "Hi Claudine." He heard his name then from another Slytherin and he looked over to see V, looking a bit excited. "A fan of History of Magic?" It was really just an assumption, why else would she look like... err that? Ash got a bright smile as well, with a bit of a raised eyebrow given the rather... happy mood she seemed to be exuding today. That was a good look on her too. Charlie was another who got a return greeting, "Hi Charlie. Doing well I hope." But he didn't know her very well so he wasn't entirely sure what else to say as greeting. Ollie, Maya and Kinsay all got the briefest of waves as he glanced up at the clock to see it ticking down, and as Heath the older Ravenclaw who was dating Claudine came in, he nodded in greeting towards him as well. "Hi Heath." He was another person Evan did not do well, but he liked Claudine so he assumed Heath was a good guy too since she liked him.

Evan had raised his hand for the first question, but honestly Kinsay had summed up what he was thinking SO well he hardly knew what else to say. But he figured he would still try to contribute something to the conversation. So once he was called upon, he offered, "Building off of Kinsay, with art showing us different emotions that means that we can have the opportunity to see different perspectives. There are usually two sides to every story, and the way that two different artists could depict the same event can give us a lot of insight into what each chapter of people might have been feeling." It was honestly pretty cool, and he did like to try to compare and contrast on things.

Miss Kingsley. Hearing just that small affirming phrase made her heart flutter, bringing even more heat to her cheeks. She looked down to avoid any embarrassment.

And then the lights dimmed, and she didn't have to worry about being seen anymore. "Deviating from what the others have said, art can also give us more context about different historical periods or events—like, what was the fashion of the time? What were peoples' relationships like? How did an event really go down? But you should obviously view art through a skeptical lens; not all of it is accurate or truthful, since it's from the viewpoint of the artist." Quinn hoped her answer was deep and moving and insightful to impress the hot teacher for just about no reason at all.

Hold-On still greeted them - some professors were just like that - but Nem only afforded him a glance before looking elsewhere again. Specifically, back to the pen they were turning over and over in their fingers. Perfectly fine, perfectly alright, nothing wrong with them, et cetera, et cetera.

Don't think so, Phoebe James. As her hand came into view, Nem swiftly moved the pen out of reach, then back again to prod her index finger with it. "Specifics required."

Nem didn't look up for every single student who entered the room, but most. They caught sight of Tilly, nearby, and Kingsley, also nearby, and Limpet, further away. Abbott-Daniau and the James twins - one of which they had, of course, already addressed. Each and every time, just as with Hold-On, their gaze would slide across each face and away again.

When the question came, Nem's input(?) was immediate, if unaccompanied by any kind of raised hand. A relationship between the two areas of study, which combined to create a third: "Art history."

The very fact she had gotten that response from the professor to her offhand question kind of made Gracelyn feel a bit better about herself. Even if Teddy’s comment had maybe reminded her that she hadn’t quite finished the assigned reading before the lesson. Likely not the best choice given there were exams coming up this term. Last term had been nice in that regard.

Either way, the lesson had begun, and she had applied her attention to Professor Holden again, notwithstanding the fact she had noticed Nem’s disregard of her being there. It wasn’t surprising in the least. Nor was their having suggested the very thing she had asked the professor about at the start, but she kept quiet on that fact. They could think it was a cunning response. It didn’t bother her.

Either way, she did raise her hand. “Art styles reflect the time periods they happened in sometimes. Like the Renaissance,” not that this was Muggle Studies, “Historical periods get named after the styles of art that happened then. Or they’re named after each other?…Plus, historical events are the subjects of art all the time. Sometimes pictures can teach more people than history books can.” At least, she thought that was the case. Besides, not everyone was able to read, but they could look at pictures.

Default Hello Remy :)

Shortly after Ollie sat herself down, Remy walked through the door. Now Ollie purposely choose a seat away from her friends so she could focus better during the class, not that she was a big ‘talking during a lesson’ person, but she didn’t want any temptations. Of course when Remy choose to sit next to her, she wasn’t upset per say, she just wished nothing got too boring leaving her to turn and talk away. As her friend sat next to her she turned and whispered “Hey.” giving a small smile with the greeting. Then she returned her attention back to the Professor as he began the lesson.

Hmmm. This wasn’t how Ollie expected. She didn’t think they taught about art and such at Hogwarts. As she listened to others answer before her, she tried to form an answer of her own. “Not only does it tell you about what current events and styles were happening, but it also can tell you more. Like, art and history do go hand in hand in the ways others are saying like what was happening at the time. But it art is a way to display emotions and more often than not, artist intend for there to be a deeper mean.” She didn’t expect to have such a big opinion on this matter seeing as she really hasn’t had any interest in anything artsy ever, but at least she was participating in class! “So art from history also can tell you deep emotions about those current events or you may find something happening in the background that the artist purposely left or put there to show you something else.”

SUMMER FOREVER

Art and history. Valentina knew nothing whatsoever about art. Well, maybe just a little. She hated not knowing many things when people around her were so smart! She couldn't help but smile at Kinsay's excitement, her eagerness to answer. It was super cute! She raised her hand after a few minutes, decided to just say what she knew anyway.

"Well, art can tell us something about how the artist saw the world too? About the culture that existed then from their point of view." Maybe. If that made sense. Isn't art just a form of expression at the end of the day?? She tried to think of something else that she could add.

If Remy knew that Ollie would rather not sit with her or anyone at the moment, she would have sulked and sat somewhere else. Thankfully, she was none the wiser. She did, however, notice Evan Nam smiling at Ollie but NOT at her. Oh, okay. Choosing not to dwell on it, her eyes fell on her favourite Gryffindor but she couldn’t linger there too long because he was sat behind her.

The pairing of art and history actually sounded pretty interesting. As an aspiring actress, she liked to involve herself in all things creative.

Art has always been around.” Probably since the beginning of time. Her answer did tie in with what others had said but she still added her two knuts. “Carvings on walls… the Egyptians told stories with their art.” She mentioned as an example. “… which also gave us an idea of historical languages spoken.” Did that count as art?

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Oh there he was.

"it's not my fault you take FOREVER in the loo, Atlas" The blonde pointed out easily. He, on the other hand, was always quick, that included washing his hands after too.

Already zooooning out of whatever was being said in class, he chose an X and did so by doodling it at the corner of the grid. "We need to make this interesting somehow" he whispered, before leaning forward to rest his head on his hand.

"Since, basically the dawn of time, people have been using art to keep track of history. Even the early cave drawings are history and showed their life at the time. Many paintings are of battle fields, both muggle and wizard alike. And portraits in the wizarding world keep a moving record of history."

There that seemed a like a satisfactory answer right??? ... right

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine happened to love this new Ash. Not that she didn’t love the old Ash but there was something great about seeing the Ravenclaw so happy. The older girl returned the smile then looked elsewhere as she heard her name. “Hi, Charlotte.’’ The Gryffindor got a wave as did Serena, Maya and Kinsay {whom she noticed had looked in her direction. Also - how was Kinsay a fourth year already?}. “Hi, you.’’ Heath got an even more personalised greeting as usual.

The Snakette straightened up a bit after the door was locked and the lights dimmed. Well, the majority of the lights. All attention on what could be considered the centerpieces now, yes? Then she blinked. Um… why would they not make it to class in one piece? Claudine threw Holden a suspicious look. She hadn’t been aware of any current dangers. Anyway. Her hand went up.

“It’s also a way of preserving events. Over the years, memories will be lost, anyone who actually experiences the events will die, narration of what actually took place during those events will eventually be muddled with new narration and facts can be distorted. Art helps to keep the facts intact. At least to an extent. I suppose it helps a lot more if the portrait is of a person; that way they can speak of events as they exactly happened." Like Sir Cadogan or the Fat Lady.

V didn't know if it was being NOT a first year, but she really did feel a bit more knowledgeable about all of the subjects this year, and she found it made her more observant and caring towards her classes. It was a nice change of pace, really.

But art was something she knew some things about because of her dad! She raised her hand timidly, waiting to be called on. All of the older people had such good points.

"Well, my dad always says that not only does art imitate life, but life imitates art. So...someone can do a piece about what they think the future will look like, and we humans find a way to do whatever our art shows. It's like...a circle of influence almost," she said, hoping that made sense. "Art can like, influence what we do."

and WAS she pouting about NO ONE wanting to sit next to her? PSSHH NO. NO HURT FEELINGS HERE. SHE WAS FINE AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE.

The only thing that Dahlia really appeared to be focusing on right then was the parchment in front of her and the quill in her hand. From the moment Professor Holden had opened his mouth and began speaking about art history, she had started taking down notes. Mainly what each of her fellow peers were saying about the topic finding it all to be true and very relevant to what she herself was thinking.

Lia raised her hand when she finished writing. "Art was always around, though it may not be the same as what we consider art to be today. It shows us how our ancestors lived and some forms of art are passed down through generations in families."

Heath turned his attention to Professor Holden as he began speaking. Paintings depicting things from history? He wondered what things that could be. At any rate, that sounded interesting. He briefly glanced toward the easels, as if trying to see through the covers. The first question jerked him out of his thoughts, and he blinked confusedly. He had no idea what to make of that question!

His thoughts immediately turned to the role the arts played in his life. The arts were his way of expressing the emotions he had to hide otherwise, and sharing his art with others made him feel understood and accepted. Granted, he was more geared toward the performing arts, but he supposed the same would apply to other art forms. But that was too close to what everyone else and said, wasn’t it? Then he remembered how he got into theatre, how watching plays helped him connect with others and he wanted to pass that on to others. He tentatively raised his hand and said, “Art helps us connect with the people of the past, their emotions and their culture.”

Was that a good enough answer? He doubted it, but he couldn’t think of anything else to say.

Gemma had been sitting quietly in the back. She wasn't one to sit in the front of classes and especially a history class. Honestly she just wanted to go back to her dorm and mirror with Hope, but she tried to focus and figure out what the lesson was for the day.

Art?

Looking around she really thought art was typically history, so she wasn't sure why it would come as a shock to anyone. "Art helps document events, people, basically a way to freeze time. So in 100 years or even more people can see that piece of history and learn about it."

Kind of like what they were doing now.

Simon Holden was genuinely surprised at Kinsay’s enthusiasm. She had never been one to be super excited about the subject before so he suspected that her excitement stemmed from the topic of art. He smiled, called on her to answer because she was the most ecstatic, and then listened to her answer. He nodded. It was a good point indeed. Feelings. Art made you feel. “Well said. Art humanises history. I know one of my predecessors probably would have rolled his eyes at the notion of us studying the emotion of history but history is messy and complex. It has human involvement.

Simon was surprised that Ash and Kinsay had found some common agreement based on the girl’s lack of acknowledgment of one another. Curious, he was, on the subject or person that caused that but one day the feud would be history itself. He nodded. “Art can be a form of expression. It can be used to convey secret messages and hidden themes.” Simon jotted down a few notes on the chalkboard.

Exactly! A vehicle to show different perspectives. Very important for us to understand different perspectives even in our times today. One can be too quick to jump to conclusions and things can get heavily politicalised when it doesn’t have to be that way. Emotions can cloud logic,” he nodded.

Quinn hoped her answer was deep and moving and insightful to impress the hot teacher for just about no reason at all.
Indeed. It can give us a peek into the culture of a society. For instance, we can tell that collars were very much in high fashion during Elizabethean art.” Simon nodded, happy that Miss Kingsley had raised that point.

A relationship between the two areas of study, which combined to create a third: "Art history.”
Simon nodded. That’s what all he could do. “Rather articulate.” He couldn’t say much else on the matter because Nem was accurate.

Simon listened to Gracelyn’s perspective, nodding ever so often. “Some great historical moments are captured in portraits.” He had seen plenty of portraits about Goblin Rebellions and whatnot. Even the Wizard’s Council had multiple paintings.

Indeed! There are always hidden messages. You can also sometimes tell what the artist thought of whom they painted and if they respected them. Sometimes portraits were flattering… other times… not so much,” he chuckled.

"Well, art can tell us something about how the artist saw the world too? About the culture that existed then from their point of view." Maybe. If that made sense. Isn't art just a form of expression at the end of the day?? She tried to think of something else that she could add.
Yes. Valentina was right. Art gave a unique perspective about the culture. “Yes! The culture. It can give us context to some of the events that we’re transpiring.

Remy raised a new point to which Simon raised his eyebrows. “Yes, carvings on walls and hieroglyphs are art forms within themselves. Exactly and that comment could lead us certainly into a topic of how history is told through Ancient Runes.” He smiled. He’d leave that topic to the Ancient Runes Professor but his thesis had been based off the relationship of history and ancient runes. Went hand in hand.

There that seemed a like a satisfactory answer right??? ... right
Simon nodded. “Art is a way for us to understand how previous cultures lived their lives what tools they used and what food they ate.” He smiled at the comment relating muggle and wizard paintings. “Our paintings can talk and you can get a very interesting perspective on historical events from them!” Probably would be worth an excursion to go speak to some of the paintings at Hogwarts.

A new point indeed. Preservation and memory. The concept of memory was always one that Simon still had yet to get past himself. He had, unfortunately, had to deal with memory and loss of memory since he was a wee lad. “Exactly…. Memory is fickle. It can be taken away and manipulated so easily. We are fortunate to have magical paintings that can speak for themselves on the events that they lived too. Others are not as fortunate.

Simon moved to call on Miss Gellar next. He listened attentively to her describe what her father told her about art. Life does imitate art. “A circle of influence. You should coin that phrase, Miss Gellar,” he nodded. “Art expands the imagination.

There’s differences between the Impressionist Masters and others.” He had some strong opinions about art.

Mr. Jones had an acceptable answer indeed. Simon nodded. "Precisely! Connect us to the past and with their emotions and cultures. Thank you."

Simon took a step back from the chalkboard and addressed the room. He was quite enthralled with all of their answers. Lots of themes to highlight here and he had jotted them doing ranging from emotions to art history (thanks Nem) to culture to art influencing life and vice versa and so on and so forth. All excellent points. He took a moment to look over all the points and nodded.

Good.

Excellent points. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the participation," he said with a nod before casting a glance at the two Flamsteed boys OBVIOUSLY doing something else. Yes, Professor Holden was watching. *AHEM* He addressed the remainder of the class. "I like starting with art as a question because history is always told through the perspective of the victor... or so said." He paused and leaned against his desk at the front of the classroom. "Some people tend to look at history as merely memorisation of facts which it is... but it is so much more than that. If you take anything away from this class, I hope it is that you study these facts and are able to interpret them and think through all the possible outcomes and opinions. I want you all to be able to pick up the rock on the beach, turn it over, analyse every single surface and try to understand the differing opinions. I want you to be able to debate differing opinions because only through trying to understand different perspectives can we create a future society that is accepting." He chuckled. "Now that is, of course, my ideal world... It is much easier to say that then to will it but you all in this room will be able to shape your own future and indirectly the world's... So I implore you to learn the facts and develop an opinion and interpretation.. This... This is the beauty of what history can teach us. Too often though we don't pay enough attention to our previous transgressions." Ah yes, here he was going on another lecture about life and becoming more philosophical. If he continued, he knew he wouldn't leave this topic so he pulled out his pocket watch which was engraved with several runes. "But we must move on.... Otherwise, I'm sure we can stay stuck on this topic... Thanks for your input."

Simon stood and moved away from the centre of the classroom. "Now art can help give us a unique perspective or opinion on the political, cultural, and societal happenings of the time at which we are studying... That being said, I'm going to move our focus to a time period closer to our own." He raised his hand up into the air, ready to cast a non-verbal.

"Now Professor Recard gave me the perfect introduction to this lesson with her lesson last year. I'm sure you are all familiar with Sacred Twenty Eight, yes?" He glanced around the classroom to see how many nods he got. "To refresh your memory, the Sacred Twenty Eight were the only supposed "truly pureblooded" families by 1930 or so the Sacred Twenty Eight would claim. Once again, we must always be a little skeptical and ask why...." If they didn't ask why, they would be like mindless sheep. A healthy dose of skepticism was important.

Simon cleared his throat. "Now.. today's lesson is going to be focused on one of the particular families in the Sacred Twenty Eight."

He stopped his lecture, knowing that he ought to put a disclaimer before they got into the meat of the material. "Now I'm aware certain events that had transpired two years ago may have left the class divided... I implore you all to park your opinions at the door and be open-minded and willing to listen to different opinions. I know what I ask is easier said than done but true learning is done when you are respectful of each other. I'm sure you are all aware of my rules. I will not hesitate to ask anyone to leave the room and see the Headmaster or go pay some time with me in detention if I see disrespect happening in this classroom."

With the warning being said, he dropped his hand, causing the easel cover ups to slowly fall forward and off the paintings. The five paintings before them are of two wizards and three witches with striking features- so striking that some may refer to them all as being beautiful. Three adults with dark hair, one with bright blonde hair and blue eyes, and the other with light brown hair. "All beautiful, aren't they? The Noble And Most Ancient House of Black was a rather striking family.. Unfortunately I wasn't able to transfigure the tapestry here today but I'm sure these portraits will do."

Yes, dear student, before you sat Regulus Black, Andromeda Tonks (née Black), Narcissa Malfoy (née Black), Bellatrix Lestrange (née Black), and Sirius Black. Grovel in all their glory.

He turned to the class. "Now tell me who are these people and what facts can you tell me about them?" He let the question hang in the air for a moment before adding. "I have a small game for those who are bored..." He walked around the room distributing a sheet of parchment with five facts on it. Once he was done passing them out, he walked back up to the classroom, letting the silence hang. "Now your task is to take the five facts that I gave you and match them to the correct portrait."

There was... a lot of information to take down, between everyone answers and everything Professor Holden was provided, and Evan was scribbling furiously to keep it all straight, glad he'd casted a silencing charm over the usual scratch that could accompany a pen. The question about the Sacred Twenty Eight got a nod from him, remembering Recard's lessons the year before and having read about it previously.

But when Professor Holden continued... asking them to be open minded for opinions different than their own.. Evan had to hunch over his piece of paper, looking even more intent on his note taking to hide the lip clench. Being openminded and listening to opinions different from his own when it came to pure bloods and any type of reference to the event that happened two years ago... He'd be willing if someone could spin it to not sound as hateful as it had all felt. But he highly doubted that was a task someone could accomplish - so really if it came down to it... he'd voluntarily leave if he had to. He was just certainly hopeful that it wasn't going to spark any type of that conversation.

Taking the piece of parchment passed out, Evan did quick work of the questions, writing each name clearly next to the fact he believed to be related to each of the person below. Once he'd finished, he'd forgotten enough about his earlier feelings that he could keep his head up and observing the different faces of the Black Family. If he was to pick a favorite based off what he knew of them, it was easily Andromeda's daughter, Nymphadora, so he found himself looking at her picture more than the others.

SPOILER!!: Evan's answers

1. Bellatrix Lestrange ---> a. ended up serving time in Azkaban
2. Sirius Black ---> b. was an animagus
3. Andromeda Tonks ---> c. The only "true" family of Sirius Black
4. Narcissa Malfoy ---> e. Was on the Slytherin Quidditch Team
5. Regulus Black ---> d. Betrayed the Dark Lord

IF Atlas has been paying attention, which he was not, he would have spoken to how art was more than just paintings and drawings - had anyone mentioned printmaking? Again, he was sort of hardcore not paying attention at the moment - and also a big deal on iconography and life imitating art while art also imitated life and how liiiiiiiiike science fiction iconography actually predicted the future sometimes ... but ... alas.

He was here arguing with his brother over what constituted as too long in the loo.

"You're just impatient," he huffed at the black cauldron sitting beside him. "I was in and out!" After about...5 minutes of messing with his hair because some random lady who called herself his Herbology professor and aunt had ruffled it earlier and ruined his whole vibe.

Tic-Tac-Toe it was then. Moving his O into the center space, Atlas glanced up and over at the professor before darting his eyes right back down to the parchment to add a little doodle or two of his own. "...remember that thing I've been working on?" The thing with the left overs from the fireworks display and some things from dad's office. "...I got a prototype in my bag..."

Atlas straightened only when he saw movement out of the corners (well...not really corners but more like the rim along his eyelids) and saw that the professor had randomly decided to start walking around - WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DO THAT?! - and was siding with Aries for the victory. Uh...hurtful, professor. Atlas' posture straightened and was bummed that his wall of school supplies had apparently not been good enough...but there were other possibilities. It was all just a big elaborate real life puzzle, after all! Challenge accepted, Professor Holden.

Pretending to take notes (also known as stream of conscious line drawing) Atlas trained his eyes ahead as the portraits of some of the more well known members of the Black family were revealed...interesting choices, told Atlas a thing or two about the professor also, considering of ALL the portraits out there of these members of the family...these were picked.. They looked powerful and blushworthy, which was a pretty biased view considering how absolutely sinister one in particular of these people was. Seemed kind of cruel to show her so...lovely-like. But also...

...uh...right.

"Are you a fan of the Black Family then, professor?" he found himself asking, engaging was also a good way to pull suspicions off yourself when you may or may not be up to something. "Since you've selected portraits of all of them in their prime and looking influential and all that, which is arguably a traditional high society pureblood perspective. As opposed to Azkaban posters, I mean."

Though it was nice to see Sirius Black as an adult looking nice...all things considered. Sirius-ly nice.

But...anyway...there was a tic-tac-toe game to be won and it was more interesting than looking at portraits of dead people. At least in his opinion. And especially since the professor was rooting for him to lose. Plus...all he could think about now was the small item nestled in his bag and if Aries wanted to give it a whirl. It did have legs and could walk on it's own before the timer went off and...so did it.

"...so...sirius-ly...you wanna?"

More line drawing was in process too, by the way. Always fun to color in the overlapping lines later and see what shapes could be formed. But he soon got bored of that and drew a black dog - which was on topic, so to speak.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina was listening to what Professor Holden said but there was a lot of information to remember so she quickly started to write things down, knowing the notes would be helpful later. She looked at what she'd written down, noticing how terrible her handwriting was. Ugh. But anyway, she got most of it down.

Sacred Twenty Eight. She nodded, remembering that lesson. The blonde looked down at her parchment as he spoke about being respectful of each other's opinions. She zoned out for a bit before finally paying attention to what was being said, looking up to observe the paintings. The members of the Black family..interesting. They all looked so powerful, a little scary too. She personally found Sirius Black to be the most handsome of the lot so she looked at him for a second or two more, admiring his features before looking down at the parchment that had been handed out. Uuuuh, okay cool, she got to work soon enough.
