Charles's classroom looked much as it and the Great Hall always did. Desks and chairs were arranged in their usual fashion and the ceiling was enchanted to resemble the weather outside. Today it was a sky full of Cumulonimbus clouds intruded upon by occasional splotches of blue. As usual, the history of magic professor is preoccupied with some essay he is writing. He occasionally glances up as a student enters. Find a spot to sit and say hello if you wish.
The only thing different than usual about the classroom was the arrangement of a large blue cooler next to the professor's desk. The word ultrices is written on a paper taped to the top of the cooler. What could it possibly mean?
Beth looked at Daniel and nodded, it could work…except it sort of sounded like a dreadful thing she had stumbled upon. ”distopyian magic world…could work – I did hear about a book that sounds like that” she added with a shake of her head ”apparently these two muggle…celebrities in the early 2000s had it ghost written for them?” she shrugged her shoulder.
”Kar…something Kartrash- no, dash…I think it was Kardashians? Something rebels” she paused and looked at them ”the book didn’t have. that grand of a following – I usually try and find reviews before reading books” she paused ”and some lady back when it was written said she ‘wouldn’t recommend it to anyone’…….so whatever we do lets make sure ours is readable and ‘worth a title’” she said after referencing not one but two reviews.
"REBELS! City of Indra that's what it was called" she squealed out happy to remember the title.

Glancing up from his notes where he had written down what his classmates had said he heard about evil. “I hadn’t thought about how we should go about having the evil be in place.... that’s smart though how will we have the dark magic portrayed?”
He started to roll his eyes at the question about survival but stopped. He remembered his first two years and no one was ever certain about anyone’s success in surviving. Even in classes he felt scared. But he didn’t really know how his teammates wanted to go on that one because honestly, he wasn’t exactly sure he’d be able to let someone die after hanging from the cliff.

How she ended up being part of what looked like the biggest group was funny. Vivian didn't really mind working with a lot of people, whatever house or year they were from. It made brainstorming easier, in her perspective, as long as their ideas didn't clash and BOOM, verbal arguments. Who knows? The Head Girl preferred to avoid all that stuff as much as possible.
However, Vivian grinned at Sky for her suggestion. Tying in Hogwarts drama to their story? Brilliant. That actually made things so much more interesting. Given how adventurous Vivian was in the years before her fifth year, she had definitely seen all the terrors that Hogwarts had. Which led to her thoughts on Patrick's ideas. "There was once a portal thing here at Hogwarts when I was... I think that was my third year," the Head Girl tried to recall. The Hufflepuff prefect back then, fake!boyfriend Brian, had dangled her by ankles with Levicorpus for trying to make a run for the portal entrance. And yes, it did happen... and it seemed like no walk to Narnia, for sure. "Like some scary and damp alternate universe on the other side. We can use something like that if we do blend true-to-life Hogwarts events and a bit of horror and the Narnia-esque portal cabinet thing?" And then mix in the crime investigation to that too? She liked that their ideas were fitting together well, like a puzzle.
As for the odds of survival for Muggles? Hmm. "Depends on how good they are at hiding," Vivian suggested. In the usual horror films she'd watched, they've only ever saved one or two characters from dying. Was that a horror film trend? "Oi, what do you suggest," she nudged Nathan's arm. Was he really just going to sit there and list down everything and not share anything?

Maddie listened to the back and forth round of introductions as their group quickly formed. It seemed as if everybody had said their name at least once, so that was out of the way. They were like old friends now. Well, kind of. Maddie smiled at the newcomer, Dorian, then turned toward the professor to listen to the introductions. Hmm...well, this was an interesting spin on History of Magic class. At least the activity seemed easy enough.
"I guess it doesn't matter now if it was groups of three or four or three to four groups," she said with a shrug. It hadn't seemed to bother the professor, so she guessed they should just move on and get started with the awesome group they have. "Umm, what about an alternate reality? It kind of gives us more freedom." She threw out a suggestion and waited to see if anybody else had any ideas.
In the meantime, she rummaged through her bag for a quill, some ink, and a fresh piece of parchment.
Lydia watched Maddie rummage through her bag for supplies and thought that was a pretty good idea. She withdrew her own purple quill and a stack of parchment. She wasn't sure how much parchment they were going to need. Better safe than sorry.
"I like the alternate reality idea," she said to Maddie. "It could be a world similar to ours but not quite, like Lyra's world in The Golden Compass. What kind of magic exists in our alternate world? There should be some sort of limits on it, kinda like our magic where we can't do certain things like conjure food from nothing."

The first person to approach him was someone he knew, or at least he had met and introduced himself to. At Floreans…over the summer. “Hey…” Septimus returned before nodding. Thank Merlin for someone willing to join him. “Then we can work together.” And he wasn’t completely lost and missing a group to work with for the lesson. Just had to find a few more to add to their number to build the team the professor wanted. Something that didn’t seem so hard after all as a Gryffindor this time, Mr. Head Boy himself, had stepped up to them.
“Sure…sure you can.” The second year wasn’t about to turn down his help. “I’m Septimus,” the Ravenclaw introduced since they hadn’t really met before. And then Septimus heard someone clearing their throat nearby only to turn to see a young Slytherin there as she spoke up to them clearing any thought that she was going for someone else. “Nope…not at all.” It wasn’t like he had anything against her or anyone now in his group. And as long as all went well, he wouldn’t.
Maddie agreed and reminded him the newest newcomer didn’t know him either. “And I’m Septimus.” As for the puff’s question about the groups, he finally knew the easy answer to a question in this class. “Three to four groups I believe.”

From behind, Lydia heard a familiar voice. She turned to see Dorian, who she'd met in the courtyard. He was looking quite anxious, not wanting to be left out of a group. Lydia completely understood that feeling!
"Dorian!" she said cheerfully. "Of course you can join...I mean, if no one else objects that is. Also, we were kinda like the founders, huh?" She smiled. She couldn't imagine any of the others not wanting to let Dorian join.
Lydia listened to Professor Curtains explain the nature of their activity. Oooh, this was going to be interesting. They had to come up with their own magic system? And create a world and characters for it? She'd never tried her hand at creative writing before, but really, how hard could it be? She'd certainly read a lot of stories. That was enough experience for actually writing one. Wasn't it?

Besides, as the professor spoke up and garnered their attention once more, it didn’t matter as they had to work and do what was asked.

“Alternate reality works,” he said with a nod, getting on board with the first idea thrown out there. Septimus wrote it down in his notebook to start their plans. “How about different groups of magic welders can do different types only available to. Maybe divided by element…or location…” Or did that sound already done? “Perhaps only available to the young…or young at heart.”
Charles glanced at the clock on the opposite side of the wall that the chalkboard was positioned on. It was almost time to end the lesson. In less than ten minutes, in fact. He looked up to make the announcement when he saw Quinn staring at him. No wait, she wasn't staring - she was GLARING. "Do you have any questions, Ms. Kevelle?" She had seemed to be enjoying the lesson so much before...
"All right everyone," he said, raising his voice so the whole class could hear. "You have ten minutes to complete your epic fantasies. Don't forget to deposit them on my desk so I can grade them. You may take one packet of ice cream with you when you leave." Consider it as both a compliment to those who studied hard and loved the subject and a bribe to those who were bored. Heh.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
Ari returned a smile to the Gryffindor girl, Rylee, whom Ari had seen around but never had the opportunity to talk to much. "Yay!" Ari was happy to have found at least one other person to work with. But before they could get down to business, a familiar figure popped up and asked to join their group.
"Oh, hi Reese!" Ari greeted the Hufflepuff boy, gave him a little smile, and that was when she stopped what she was doing and stared at him, slightly puzzled. Then she glanced back at Rylee while they were having their little chitchat. Then back at Reese. Back at Rylee. Back at Reese. Ohhhhhhhhh... Ari didn't know why she wasn't able to put the pieces together earlier, but now that they were next to each other and Ari realized why they have the same last name.
Cool. A sibling in the group. That shouldn't be a problem, as long as they can keep their little argument or whatever (from the sound of their exchange) out of their work today, it shouldn't affect their group performance. Oh, and it seemed that Rylee just invited another member, a Slytherin girl about Ari's age (Chloe), into the group. Ari gave a firm and confidence smile to everyone in the group. "YAAA LET'S GO TEAM!"
When it seemed that everyone found their respective groups, the Professor went on to explain the rest of today's activity. As soon as Ari heard that they would be needing "writing materials," she groaned slightly. Ari hates writing. nOPE. One of the other members can be the secretary. Not Ari, she refuses to touch a quill unless it is absolutely necessary. Although, the prompt of creating their own fantasy world does sound fun, so Ari does plan on contributing to their little project as much as possible.
"Oooh! This sounds fun." Ari rubbed her hands together, though actively avoiding getting her quills and ink out. "I think we should create a world on another planet!" Ari has always like the idea of going into space and exploring other celestial bodies in the universe. There are just so many possibilities to play with! "People on that planet can have special powers... I don't know what, but they can teleport, move things with their minds, magnetism... kind of like superheroes!" Ari hoped that her teammates were well-versed in comic book heroes, because she might reference them quite a bit in this activity. "However, there's a twist. The source of their power is dying, and they might lose their powers, their planet, everything." Ari paused for a moment, eyeing the other members in their group hopefully.
Juni couldn’t help but to laugh, in this whole big group how was she the only Ravenclaw. Also she was surrounded by Slytherins and Hufflepuffs… how typical. Anywho, back to this lesson, book fantasy thing. Whatever you wanted to call this.
”Not all of them will make it.” Sorry that was just the way things were if they were going for horror. She did like where this was going though. The portal, yeah that was terrible honesty but it do make for good drama for this. ”How about instead of a evil witch or queen. We have a hag, that bought a portal.” Still loosely-ish bring real life events that had actually happened into their story.
She almost forgot that she was supposed to be writing this all down.

Nettie had NO idea what some of these references were that Beth was throwing out, but it was interesting to hear her describe them. Huh. She was REALLY going to have to get in to muggle fantasy books, it seemed. "What's the Red Queen?" she asked curiously. That one just SOUNDED cool by the title of it.
What was Quinn's deal? She raised her eyebrow at her fellow Claw, but left it alone and just scribbled down Beth and Daniel's ideas as they rattled them off. Whatever her problem was, it didn't concern Nettie, therefore it was of little interest to her.
"I like the evil twin idea. The one should be REALLY evil. Like, the twist would be that you CAN'T redeem them, because they've gone all Voldemort and the hero tries to save them but can't," she said. She wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not but she wanted to contribute SOMETHING. Daniel and Beth sounded like they had a whole novel series planned out over there...

He had absolutely no idea what Beth kept talking about. He supposed they were all muggle books, so he wouldn't know any of the references thrown here and there. He was delighted that Nettie had asked one of the many questions that he'd refrained from asking just because he was too shy to admit that nothing sounded familiar to him.
Turning to Nettie, he hummed thoughtfully at her idea. "I was thinking about them being reunited and teaching the elite twin the ways of the commoners, leading to him trying to persuade the rest of the elites to stop controlling the magical folk." But she did have a good idea... "But I suppose, we could get at least a trilogy out of your idea." People who went dark all the way were more fun in fantasy stories. Kept them going much longer.

Okay, so...cool. It seemed like everybody was on board with her idea to go the whole alternate reality route. Or, at least Lydia and Septimus were. The others hadn't said one way or the other. Maddie was about to ask if any of them had other ideas, when the professor spoke up and let them know they only have ten minutes left. "Ten minutes? We should probably just go with what we already have and get it finished then," she said.
In other words, alternate reality it was!
Maddie dipped her quill in ink and took down some notes. She wrote about how they'd chosen an alternate reality route and about how they thought there should be limits and people like magic welders. "Oh, this is really good!" she said. "Maybe the limitations should about creating money and gold then." That kind of combined both Lydia and Septimus' ideas.
EVIL TWIN? Beth didn’t want to say right now that she had one of those…well, Cord wasn’t evil she was just ugh. Y’know? She didn’t even want to go to Hogwarts with her…the silly thing had even said why would I want to go to a school named for warty hogs? like…seriously that was uncalled for sister not-so dearest. Still, she liked the idea, really it was fun.
”there is a way where we could try and incorporate both ideas could be hilarious and comic even” Beth shrugged her shoulder as she continued writing down the ideas they were spewing out. All ideas were valid, even dead pan silence. Silence was a rare commodity in books these days - that reminded her of that book she’d found in the library that screamed every single time it was opened.

”you could say use the unredeemable aspect and have it be that the twins don’t even know they’re twins for most of the series…like, they’re lives are so different that one becomes evil…” tapping her chin for a moment she paused, ”why not confuse the readers and have the majority of the series written from the villains point of view” Beth did grin over to Nettie as she asked about the book.
”its…a really interesting muggle series from around the 2020s I think?” she shrugged, maybe she was off in her dates but, as they said pish posh…”basically the world is split into a hierarchy – you have red blooded people that are virtually powerless, powered silver blooded people…that control all of the power – and they each family has a different power…like control over metal or…or control over flames and fire” she grinned, ”the main character Mare…like the horse was red blooded but somehow had powers and it explores the revolution basically that she starts when she interrupts a thing called…Queenstrial?” Beth shrugged hoping she gave a good enough description ”I have a copy if you want to borrow it?” she offered with a grin.

The others in their group seemed okay with the basic idea for their story. At least, involving creatures, which was good since Stasya figured it made the most sense to go with something they knew about and she knew both Derf and herself knew creatures. And Jessa, in a different way, if she wasn’t wrong. Except, she was entirely too aware that Jessa herself hadn’t really contributed much. That and yet another aspect of the whole assignment. “Should one of us be writing our ideas down?” As they hardly had a story yet.
She really wasn’t sure exactly how to make their idea work, either. Not in a completely original way, anyway, and it was bothering her. Just because she felt like they had an amazing idea, but it wasn’t coming out right. It was a little frustrating, although Chloe’s idea gave her another idea, and she’d been about to mention it when Professor Curtains had announced their time was almost up. Which meant they really needed to get it written down, plus come up with an idea in the first place.
“Maybe the feather, or the dragon egg,” she added with a look in Cam’s direction, “is a key. Like, the invisible world is in danger and the Muggle who finds the key is meant to save it from whatever is threatening it.” Since Chloe was right and they kind of did have to create some sort of system. Not to mention a story and so far they hadn’t really had one?

"I'll take notes." Jessa offered, almost too suddenly. It was an obvious cop out, and the clearest indication that she didn't plan to be of any ACTUAL use (which....made her feel incredibly guilty because she bet Stasya had asked her to join so she could give actual input and be of use)........but she didn't want to. The obvious compromise was taking notes. If she took the notes then at least she would feel like she wasn't being a complete let down in this under-stimulating lesson.
The Ravenclaw pulled a piece of parchment from her bag and placed it on the desk.
Vaguely she was aware of what all had been discussed so far, despite her nose being stuck in her book. It was at least enough for her to do a few useless scribbles. She would offer to make up for it in another lesson but....of late, it'd been hard to find motivation during lessons, harder still when the lessons where entirely theory based and filled with things she didn't need.
To be fair, her interests had become so niche that not many classes still held her interest but yeah...at least some of them still had her doing some form of movement. Sitting idly was the absolute worst--and yes, grouping up to make a story was considered being left idle in her book.

His ideas seemed to be going down super well and that gave Max the motivation to continue. When it came to group work in class, he was normally the one who shied away and quietly took notes. But quite the opposite was happening now.
Powers relating to the elements... an enchanted surf board... all of this was great stuff.
"Okay, well the elements are earth, fire, water and air... yeah?" Bonza Bel already had water covered so...
Max turned to Hattie with excited wide eyes. "Heatwave Hattie the Hypnotic! I reckon Heatwave Hattie would have some really awesome solar powers. You could channel your energy from the sun and blast bad guys with scorching hot sun rays. And and and create light so bright that it distracts all the enemies so they can't see."
He looked between the pair of them, waiting for their reaction. And for any other ideas they had too because he was starting to feel like maybe he was taking over a little... oops.

It was honestly so good to work in a group which was full of ideas. She loved these types of creative assignments, where she could work to her best ability. They were fun, and really allowed her to let her creative juices get flowing. They got her super inspired. That was the reason why she was doodling away. It made her brain work a bit better. She was aware she wasn't giving too many ideas, but she really did not want to take over too much. She wanted them all to have an equal go. Andd.... could maybe... use air to like push people around" Her idea seemed a bit silly compared to Max's but at least it was an idea, even if it was a bad one.
"Heatwave Hattie!" Bel repeated, and wrote that down. "And I like the air stuff for Mystic Max." If Max was okay with that of course. "Maybe he can summon tornadoes to blow baddies away! Oh, and use air currents to levitate himself and people he's rescuing!" How did it all look? She pushed her notes into the centre of the desks so the other could see what they had so far, especially since the professor was telling them they needed to finish up.

Rylee could tell by the puzzled look on her housemates face that she had no idea Reese was her brother. That was alright. Not everyone did. Ari seemed to figure it out quickly though which made her smile. Once they were all seated and everyone was comfortable she looked at each of them in turn... hopefully this would work out.
As the professor began to explain the days activity, Rylee glanced at her brother half expecting the younger boy to get up and walk out. Sighing softly she picked up her quill and pulled out a fresh sheet of parchment. "I don't mind writing all this down for us. A new planet... okay. What do you all think we should call it?" She glanced at them all in turn.
"So they have special powers. Like telekinesis you mean?" she asked looking over at Ari for confirmation before jotting it down on the parchment. "And they can teleport. What if... they were all kids? Like our ages?" No adults. Adults were over rated. "Yeah, I like that! So they need to travel around to other planets now to harvest forms of power in order regenerate a strong enough amount of energy to bring help their own planet start to come alive again?"
Setting down her quill she leaned back in her chair, blue eyes shinning brightly as she glanced at the rest of her group to see what they thought. Any input on anything was good. Character names, ages, powers, a name for the planet. Anything at all was still up in the air right now.

Huh? Septimus caught the comment and looked around at his teammates before seeing the newcomer who had brought it up. They did have all four houses making him Rowena’s representative. Well him and Dorian given the slightly elder Ravenclaw was joining them. “Sure…” he answered, echoing the acceptance of others. Besides, as the professor spoke up and garnered their attention once more, it didn’t matter as they had to work and do what was asked.
Writing and creating their own world…how fun!
“Alternate reality works,” he said with a nod, getting on board with the first idea thrown out there. Septimus wrote it down in his notebook to start their plans. “How about different groups of magic welders can do different types only available to. Maybe divided by element…or location…” Or did that sound already done? “Perhaps only available to the young…or young at heart.”

"That sounds good," she told them. "I like your idea, Septimus, about only the young being able to do magic. When they reach their 18th birthday or something, they can't do magic anymore. And magic can never be used to create money or gold. And hmm, I like the idea of different types of magic. Maybe each child is born with a special gift? Like certain kids are good with fire, that sort of thing..."
Lydia snuck a glance at some of the other groups. She tried not to eavesdrop on any of them, but she really wanted her group to do well on this assignment. More than anything she wanted to do well and earn points for her house.
Uhhhhhhh... okay. Abra wasn't... sure how this was going to work. He'd grown up with magic his whole life, had never read any muggle fantasy books or anything like that, couldn't even begin to imagine how a different magic system might work. It was like trying to imagine a new colour, and he already saw more of those than the average human.
But he had his teammates, and he also had his imagination, and apparently that was all they needed, after all. And it least it wasn't, like, actual History of Magic. Sure, Curtains pointed out that it was sort of related, but they weren't looking at dates or events or historical people, weren't having to memorise boring history facts. For that, Abra was grateful.
Sort of. Because he was still pretty lost on what kind of input he could really give here. For a long time, he just stayed quiet, only to grow more and more anxious that he wasn't really giving any ideas and might easily be viewed as the slacker in this group project. Maybe that was true, but he didn't want it to be. Not when he was working with his friends.
"I, um... don't really know what he means," Abra said, starting at normal volume and then quickly lowering his voice. "How can there be a different system of magic?" The last part was more mumbled to himself than directed at everyone else, as though he was sort of ashamed of his own question. He considered what everyone said, especially Chloe, then scratched at his head with the end of the quill that he wasn't even using. "Maybe what makes it extra different from real life is... iiiiiis.........." Uhhhhh... "Uhm, maybe... in this, uh, 'magic system', maybe people are never born magic? But creatures are? And every human who's magic gains it from those creatures when they find those things?" He was looking pained, like trying to think something up was actually causing physical pain. "Does that work?"
Otherwise, Abra was lost. He'd been lost all lesson, and they'd not even been learning proper history facts, but now they were doing something creative and he was just as lost as if they'd been trying to learn all the different dates to do with goblin wars.

Limitations: Magic can never be used to create money or gold.
"Okay, so this is what I have so far," she told the group, and she turned her notes around to let everybody get a better look. "Anybody have an idea for what that area of the world should be named? It needs a really cool name."
Oh, so that was what was bothering her. She wanted to do this writing assignment alone. He probably should have guessed that some of the students might have wanted that. "That is perfectly acceptable to me, Ms. Kevelle," he said cheerfully. "You can hand it in tomorrow or at the end of the day, whichever works best for you." He was intrigued on what she would write.
Glancing at the clock, Professor Curtains stood and clapped his hands together. "Right! Well that well all for today, class. Those who have not submitted their essays may do so now. place your essays in an orderly pile on the left side of this desk. I look forward to seeing what amazing worlds you have created. I hope this lesson has stimulated your imaginations." He glanced briefly at Zoryn as he mentioned stimulating imaginations. "Class dismissed!"
