Default HoM Lesson 1 - Nicolas Flamel

It was a chilly day on the first of December, but thankfully for her students, Gabi always liked to have her classroom run a little warmer. Multiple bluebell flame charms had been suspended in jars around the classroom to create the ultimate sweet spot in temperature - not too cold, but not so toasty that her students would fall asleep.

Gabi is standing at the front of the class, leaning against her desk and resting her palms on the wood as she waited for her students to enter. Behind her on the blackboard is a single picture hinting at today's lesson:

As the students began to enter, Gabi sat up a little straighter and smiled at them. "Morning everyone! Please have a seat, we'll get started shortly," she announced. No need to get out anything particularly flashy - just their notes and textbooks would do.

OOC: Hello everyone! Welcome to your first History of Magic lesson! I hope you're all as excited as I am to get going! Remember, this is NOT your first History of Magic lesson of the term IC as we are already in December. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Classroom Rules and Expectations as well as the SS RPG rules before posting. Thanks! Class will commence in roughly 24 hours! CLASS HAS NOW STARTED. Anyone posting their character entering class will face IC consequences. Just pretend you've been here the whole time!

Tom tried to think more about his answer. "Well who knows, maybe he wanted to see what it would be like in 100 years and then it just continued from there, then stuff like the cars, better houses, electricity all that sort of things came out and he wanted to see where it went but in the end he stopped because of what happened with Tom Riddle."

Cole understood why professors, especially history of magic ones liked to start discussions. It made the students reflect and think and associate and use what their peers thought to drive their own thoughts further. It did though make note taking hard. Cole was going to provide his thoughts to the discussion when Rowena Ravenclaw happened and he lost his thoughts. First Godric and Salazar in DADA and now this woman. It was no wonder that Blake got frazzled and Kodee of course had to act stupidly and get points deducted. Hopefully Ms Ravenclaw didn't turn him into a toad since Professor Recard had already acted.

Anyway remembering what he had wanted to say earlier Cole raised his hand to answer. "Professor, I think i agree with Jillian and Blake that Flamel like other scientists or alchemists in this case had a life dream/goal to see if he could create something that could make him immortal like we only read about in myths and fairytales. Flamel probably was fascinated by the subject of immortality and combined with that and knowledge and will he created the stone. I somehow from what i've read and heard about Flamel don't think he created the stone for the ability to turn all metal into gold. I think he just saw it as an added perk. Many scients in history haven't been driven by money so maybe Flamel wasn't either."

Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...

All of this was weird, talking about a man that was dead and having a woman in the room that was dead, but not really. "Maybe we should bring Flamel's portrait out and bring it to life too, then we can just ask him." Since they had portraits out and about now.

"I think he realized how dangerous it was. Think about it, how many bad people would be after him all the time if he had shared the results. It was too dangerous and he knew it, but who would ever really want to destroy such an accomplishment either. It was a really hard choice for him and I think he figured out a way to keep it safe until he couldn't any longer." She wasn't going to see the bad in him, she didn't like doing that to anyone.

When Al spoke she just looked over at him and then looked away. She was mad at him, she didn't know why she was mad, but it was a conversation that was stuck in her head and everything going on with her brother, she just felt she should be mad at him too. So she didn't respond to anything he had said or Kodee anymore.

Something that Claudine said made her look towards her. For the poor? Everything her mother ever said about that family never would have made her think she would respond like that. Maybe they weren't all like the ones her mother and grandmother had dealt with.

So much to think about lately, it was starting to make her head hurt.

Avalon had to blink a few times at the arrival of Rowena Ravenclaw. Or, at least someone that did an astounding transfiguration. She had heard the rumors of the founders leaving their portraits, but until now, she hadn't seen any of them in person. There was definitely something weird going on, judging by Professor Recard's obvious confusion and discomfort with Rowena's appearance.

It seemed like her house's founder was keen to just observe the lesson. Suddenly self-conscious about the quality of her response, Avalon took a few more minutes to think over her contribution. She didn't want to sound like an idiot in front of Rowena. That is, if it actually was Rowena.

"I wonder if Flamel was merely fascinated with immortality. Is it known how old he was when he made the stone? Younger people usually think it's cool to live forever, but older folks...not so much. My grandfather says that dying isn't as scary when you get old. And I think that a lot of elders are satisfied with the lives they've lived." In other words, they wouldn't want to live forever. She paused, trying to collect her thoughts. "I guess my point is that being young might have motivated him to create it, since living forever is fascinating at that stage of life."

Or maybe Avalon was painting Flamel in an entirely too selfish light. "Or perhaps he created the stone for someone else. Maybe there was a person in his life that he couldn't bear to see die. That could have been his motivation, too." The bottom line was that nobody probably knew why he made it. Unless he had some sort of diary.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath was so confused right now! Not only had his answer, which he thought was too far off the mark, received positive feedback, but now there was a mysterious dark-haired woman walking around the room. Uhh… was he seeing what he thought he saw? He did a double take, and as he did so, he remembered where he'd seen the woman before. She looked exactly like Rowena Ravenclaw! But… that wasn't possible. The real Rowena Ravenclaw had been dead for over a thousand years. How was she here?

A thought suddenly occurred to him. Was the lesson on Flamel a misdirect? Were they going to cover the Hogwarts founders instead? He couldn't think of any other reason why someone would turn up in the middle of class dressed as Rowena Ravenclaw. Ooh, were they going to put on a play about the founders? Maybe he'd get to play Gryffindor or Slytherin!

Heath's enthusiasm instantly deflated when he heard what the activity really was. Acting the part of a Hogwarts founder would've been right up his alley, but debating Nicholas Flamel's intentions… not so much. It already took every bit of courage he had to speak up in lessons at the best of times, and that was only reciting factual information. Just the thought of putting his own ideas out there to be challenged and picked apart in front of everyone terrified him! How could he even try to force himself to put that thought into practice? But how could he not? If he spoke up, he'd say the wrong thing and make an idiot of himself like usual! If he didn't, he'd probably get into trouble for lack of participation! There was no way he could win, was there?

Heath's self doubt drowned out everything his classmate said, making it nearly impossible to concentrate on the task. He tried to refocus his attention on Flamel. Why would he create the stone? Hmm… based on what he knew, it seemed that Flamel liked to help others. So maybe that was it? He created the philosopher's stone because he thought it would help people… Like maybe, he didn't like seeing people go through the pain of losing a loved one - or maybe even gone through it himself - and he thought if he could perfect a path to immortality, it would spare a lot of people a lot of heartache. At least, that's what Heath himself would've done if he'd been in Flamel's shoes.

Heath knew there was no way he'd be able to say all that was on his mind. The best he could hope for was to get any words out at all! He timidly raised his hand, propping his arm up with his free hand to stop himself from putting it back down before the professor could see it. "I-I agree that Flamel created the stone to help people," he managed to squeak out when it was his turn. He wasn't going to explain his reasoning unless he was asked. The more he thought about it, the more far-fetched his thoughts seemed, and the last thing he wanted was to have that pointed out in front of the whole class! He was just… gonna keep quiet now.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Why was one of the founders in History of Magic class? Well Rowena Ravenclaw would surely have a lot of history to share, that was for sure.......but the professor looked rather surprised to see her. Clearly her visit wasn’t planned.

Naya tried to focus her attention back on the task at hand. The class was going to have a discussion, debate, sharing of ideas. Once her classmates started to give their opinions, Naya found them interesting. It was interesting because people could see things in so many different ways. Like the professor said, there was no one right answer to her question. Of course they would never really know what prompted Flamel to do what he did.

Naya raised her hand because she wanted to share her opinion. When she was called on, she went straight to the point. ”Nicholas Flamel created the Sorcerer’s Stone and the Elixir of Life, but I don’t think it was only for the selfish reason of having eternal life. I think he wanted more time to study alchemy, discover and create new things and basically use his talents in ways that would ultimately help the wizarding world. I think he had good intentions when he created those things. He wanted them to be used for good and not evil.”

why do you think he was motivated to create the stone in the first place?

She was deep in thought when suddenly Madam Ravenclaw appeared in their class. Her jaw dropped when Kodee suddenly stood up and leaned in to touch the Ravenclaw founder and the Professor had to deduct points to his house for doing so.

Uhhhhhh...

She doesn't entirely agree on what Kodee said but perhaps it was acceptable. She did agree with Chloe. If a man lived for that long stories about him, whether good or bad will surface. She did raise her hand up as well "I think it was purely scientific." she stated "He was an alchemist. He dwelled into the subject of immortality because of his curiosity. He wanted to know his capabilities as an alchemist and whether or not he can create the Philosopher's Stone. Some scientists go through life going into a field of study trying justify the reality of it. So did Nicholas Flamel and he was successful. He was able to create it and lived longer than most wizards." she added.
"Very good Prefect Kim, I like that line of thinking. Why do you think he stopped there, though? Why not try and develop more breakthroughs in alchemy after the stone?" she challenged the Slytherin prefect with a follow up to her question. True, there was no evidence that he stopped alchemy all together, but she would let the Slytherin come to that conclusion on her own.

Ok, Blake seemed...better. She wasn't sure she was entirely convinced everything was ok, but she WAS a Healer. If he was going to faint, may as well be in her class.

"So you're saying he wanted to see if he could do it? Test his own capabilities?"
she asked him. It wasn't too difficult of a follow up question, in her opinion. Easing him back into the conversation.

That was Rowena Ravenclaw, right? The blonde rubbed her eyes JUST to see if maybe she'd done that daydreaming thing in the middle of class again, causing such a vision, but NOPE. There she was.

What on EARTH was going on?

Oh NO. No no no. KODEE CHOSEN >.< Cecelia eyed the older boy and FROWNED 'cause he'd gone and touched the lady who was maybe Rowena Ravenclaw and then LOST points for their house 'cause of it and it just-he was the worst. Kodee Chosen was the WORST. It was official.

Eyes still dancing from the professor to the Ravenclaw woman to Kodee Chosen, the second year raised her hand distractedly. "Bet one reason was because he was a really driven guy. He wanted to meet a goal and he worked so so hard and then he did."

...Wasn't she smart, Rowena Ravenclaw?
"Good start," Gabi smiled at the young Summers girl. "But what motivated him to pick THAT particular goal? When someone is very internally motivated, they can certainly do lots of good, but why did he seek out immortality specifically?" she asked her, trying to force her to think a bit more about that part of her answer. Really think from Flamel's point of view!

And yet, Flamel almost certainly created the stone because he was a coward. Scientific curiosity only got individuals so far, and if that argument was true, well, then Flamel would not have abused the stone for hundreds of years. He did not want to die. He and his wife figured they cracked the key to immortality and exploited it for centuries. Alessandro did not judge him. But the misguided perspective of his peers that it was for strictly academic purposes was ridiculous.

So, he raised his hand and said something he never, REPEAT NEVER, thought he would ever say, "I agree with Kodee, Professor."

As far as he knew, all experiments ended at some point. Even if no one else saw it that way, one of his best mates—who happened to be quite sensible—did and that was all the validation the boy needed.

He shrugged at the suggestion to retake his seat, figuring if all he lost was two points then he made it out alright. In this case, the benefit outweighed the risk. Bad as he was, he’d earned more than two points this term which meant they were his to lose as he pleased.

Kodee walked back to his seat, not missing the way everyone but him had gotten a response—unless you counted Al’s entirely necessary validation. The Gryffindor pulled his chair next to Al’s and spun it so he could fold his arms over the back. Grey eyes locked on Ravenclaw. Was she going to do something or just stand there encouraging them to use answers that didn’t come from their textbooks? You could guess which the boy preferred.

As to the discussion, he had no interest in taking part if his answers, like others he’d given, would be overlooked. There were better ways to expend his typically over abundant amount of energy. He nudged the Hufflepuff. “Think anyone’s told her about her daughter and the baron yet?”
Agreed with Kodee? Oh. That's right. Kodee Chosen had come up with an answer to her question before he'd completely distracted her with his rule breaking. She had come up with a good response too, but had been so frazzled since then that it had completely fallen out of her head. She nodded at the both of them before reformulating her original comeback to his answer, posing it to both Alessandro and Kodee this time.

"So you say you think Flamel feared death, and that was why he kept the stone around for so long. And then he gave up, because Mister Chosen believes he was in serious debt. So why not use the stone to make some gold, sell the gold for money, and keep on living?" she challenged the two, very keen on hearing what their thoughts on THAT scenario were.

She had to hand it to them - their imagination was truly remarkable.

Isla blinking, thinking that she knew this woman from somewhere, but she just couldn't remember where.

Her gaze traveled to the professor, as she silently questioned what was going on here. Recard didn't seem too concerned, so Isla just shrugged it off and raised her hand.

"He was probably just like everybody else. People are always wanting to do things better, faster, or easier," she said. "Maybe he was just trying to improve how long people live or something like that." Some people just liked to 'go big or go home', as they say. Isla eyed the random lady. Was that creative enough?
Gabriela nodded at her. "Good thinking. However, if you argue that he did it for the good of mankind, why not share that creation with the world?" she asked her, curious to hear what the young Slytherin's thoughts were on that take.

So far, she had only encountered Helga Hufflepuff but had heard talk of the other founders wandering around as well. One could say for certain that Claudine had a slightly difficult time focusing on the lesson as it moved on.

What was Kodee doing? Honestly, was he really that stupid?

Pulling her thoughts together eventually, Claudine raised a hand. “I agree with Chloe; I don’t think the creation had much to do with Flamel fearing death. Since the Stone also…’’ She was distracted by Ravenclaw just being there in the room. Her eyes darted from the ‘dead’ woman back to Recard and back to Ravenclaw again. “Um. Also… also.’’ Back to Recard where she forced her gaze to remain. “Also turned metal into gold, maybe he wanted to use it to help the poor?’’

Her hand was lowered but once more, she was staring at Ravenclaw.

So, was this someone who had used magic to make themselves look like another Founder?
"That's very true - one of the overlooked powers of the stone, as many people fixate on the whole 'immortality' thing," Gabi said with a small smile. "So then, I ask you this...why do you think Flamel didn't turn everything he had to gold? To essentially live like a king for his time here on Earth?" There was never any evidence to suggest that he had abused that power to pad his bank account, at least not near the end of his life, so she was curious to hear Claudine's thoughts on the manner.

It was tempting to want to touch her, though, and Bernadette did find herself lifting her bum off her seat as though she meant to follow Kodee Chosen. He was a leader! She couldn't help it! "What did she feel like?" she asked the boy out loud before thinking, and before realizing the professor had taken points from him.

Oh, well. Those were points well spent, in her book.

Couldn't they just have Rowena lead the lesson, then? She might've been around when Flamel was creating the Elixir of Life. "I dunno, Professor, I feel like this was one of those accidental discoveries. Like he was trying to create gold and instead wound up with this... great, life-sustaining potion. Like what Chloe and Isla said." The second year shrugged, her blue eyes flicking again toward Rowena; she couldn't help asking her next question as her curiosity got the best of her. "Is she a guest speaker or something? Can we ask her if she knew Nicolas Flamel?"

Bernie's was fuzzy with wizarding history timelines, but like, the Founders and Flamel were contemporaries in her mind.
"Oh, interesting take...that the elixir and stone was an accidental discovery," Gabi grinned at Bernadette, once again impressed that she had thought so out of the box. She blinked at her question, though, about Rowena. "Oh, no, she's...just here to observe," she assured her, trying to sound as confident in her answer as she could.

It didn't really matter, did it? What was it the professor was asking? Nothing about the lady in the ancient dress, so time to focus back on the lesson about old French Dude Flamel. "Maybe... this is real sappy, Professor, but maybe he didn't want the Elixir for himself. Like, maybe he loved his wife so much that he just wanted to keep on living with her and eating croissants and making gold nuggets to buy even more croissants. It's a good life, if you can swing it."
"That's a very sweet way of looking at it, Miss James," Gabi chuckled a little at her answer. "Why do you think he only used it with his wife, though? Why not his parents? Or other family members?" she asked. She really wanted to challenge her with that follow up question.

"Unfortunately, due to the uneven record keeping in the Middle Ages, it is hard to pinpoint when the stone was made, however despite the fact that it kept them alive, their bodies continued to age. So perhaps he wanted to see what it was like to keep living longer - why do you think he kept going, though, especially as his body started to decay?" she asked her thoughtfully. The second part of the Ravenclaw's answer was very close to Phoebe's - it warmed her, honestly, to see her students thinking of something so...sweet and romantic! So many optimists, she loved it.

She smiled at the Ravenclaw in an encouraging manner, trying to put him more at ease. "Then I pose the same question I posed to Chloe - why not spread the stone around, then? Why keep the elixir for themselves?" she asked. As always, there was no right or wrong answer!

"More time to study alchemy...interesting theory. One thing wizards are always trying to beat is the slow creep of time," Gabi agreed with the young girl on that front. "But why not share the elixir with the world? Or are you suggesting that simply be being PRESENT for longer, he could have a greater impact on the good of humanity?" she asked. Both options could be argued for - and that was what she was hoping for!

"Everyone is doing a fantastic job - you're all making GREAT efforts at having thoughtful discussions, and I appreciate that. The truth is - as it usually is when it comes to history - that there is no right or wrong answer. History is not simply black and white, but more gray in many areas. We can never be sure why exactly Flamel created the stone, but we can only use the evidence we have available to us to make our best guesses, and use historical documents and texts to help us prove our point of view" she explained.

The appearance of Ravenclaw had thrown her off slightly, so she had spent a few more minutes on the debate than she had intended. "Alright everyone, we can continue our discussion, but we are also about to move on to the main activity!" she announced.

She walked over to one of the side tables near the front of the classroom and pulled out some poster boards and colorful quills and inkwells. "We'll be doing some arts and crafts for this next part of the lesson! I'll tell you more in a minute, but in the meantime, come up front and grab one of these poster boards and some colorful inks, if you would like. It's just for writing, there won't be drawing involved...again, I'll explain more in a second," she said with a smile before clapping her hands together once as a sign to get started.

She continued to cast a glance at Rowena every couple of moments to assure she was...staying put. Not creating a disturbance. Maybe once the kids got underway with their projects, she could approach her without making a scene politely request she leave...

OOC: MAIN ACTIVITY TIME! As Gabi said, you can post your students coming up and grabbing some art supplies. We'll move along in approximately 20ish hours! CATCH UP IS ALLOWED! If you did not get a chance to post in regards to the mini activity/you want to have your character respond again to Gabi please feel free to!

As always, nudge me in the post title if you need me!

Aww, Phoebe had had a lovely answer here about love and other sappy feelings old people got for each other... s'eh cute... Bernie beamed at her friend AND at the professor for her response, but she did still wonder what the purpose of a founder observing class was???? What could they do about things if they didn't like them, huh?

Anyway, they had an excuse to get up and stretch their legs, so Bernie did just that, and then took a roundabout way up to the front of the room to get her posterboard. She made sure to brush past Rowena Ravenclaw on her way to the front of the room, and raised her eyebrows as the woman and her outergarments, at least, seemed VERY solid. "'Scuse me, ma'am," the second year muttered as she somewhat roughly pushed past her with her hands and her scrawny elbows. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

"I think she's real," the second year declared quietly, mostly under her breath, as she grabbed her poster and inks, and headed back to her desk. Bernie had to check her hands and robes real quick as she walked just in case any oil paint or charcoal dust or something had brushed off the founder and onto her. Nope, huh. She seemed legit??!!? Did she really pop out of a painting??!?? How could they get her to go back in it, huh????????

She didn't seem at all concerned that she was interrupting her lesson, and then she began to address the students like...she had some sort of authority here. In GABRIELA'S classroom.

No one in this classroom had seen Gabriela Recard FRAZZLED but...she was well on her way to reaching that state. She'd heard whispers of founders walking around the school, and she'd been certain that it was just some dumb prank by someone who was extremely skilled in Transfiguration. But the fact that this woman seemed so CONFIDENT...and bore such a resemblance to Rowena Ravenclaw that she was quite certain even the best NEWT students couldn't pull that off...it was throwing the blonde for a loop.

Could it also be possible that this woman was just a Ministry worker here to do a review of her? Someone doing random checks on the competency of the staff? It was that thought, and that thought alone, that made Gabi pause.

"Can I help you with something?" she asked, a smile on her face that was anything but sincere.
Rowena paused near the professor who stopped after her instructions to ask if she needed anything. Did it look like she needed anything? "No," the woman replied plainly, returning the oh-so sincere smile that the woman had given her. She was just fine as she was, thank you very much.

Gabi's blue eyes widened almost comically as she watched Kodee get out of his chair, approach the newcomer, and actually reach out to touch her! No matter WHO this person turned out to be, the behavior was extremely inappropriate, and any discussion Gabi had been developing in response to his answer was out the window. Her patience with the Gryffindor was spent.

"Mister Chosen...sit. down. now," she told him sternly, her voice almost resembling a growl of sorts as her limit had been reached with the Chosen boy - and THEN some.. "That will be 2 points from Gryffindor as well. For disrupting class and touching someone without their permission," she added. "If you don't return to your seat immediately, I'll be forced to throw a detention on there as well," she told him sternly.

Boundaries, people!
And that was when she felt something touch her, which she had NOT given permission for anyone to do, so the woman recoiled at the touch and shot a glare at the heathen who had dared to do it. She instinctively began to reach for her wand... but as she was from a portrait, she did not have one. And it was a good thing for the boy, or he might have found himself living the remainder of his life without fingers.

Rowena took a deep breath as this Professor scolded the child for his actions with an empty threat and the loss of two points. Two.

"I'd like to reevaluate your consequences, child," Rowena said sternly, still glaring at the boy and, for the most part, ignoring the professor. "Seventy five points will be taken from Gryffindor and you will receive detention. Tonight. I'll see to it myself." He had touched her after all. This other woman didn't know what she was talking about.

She couldn't believe the headmaster hadn't figured out how to get them back into their portraits yet, but she didn't mind her being here. Maybe she could teach them some history while here.

It was his words though that had her hand up, they still were doing this discussion even if the founder was here, right? "I don't fully agree with Kodee, I mean death is scary, none of us want to die, but it is part of life just the same. Plus living that long, you would outlive your children, grandchildren, if you have them and that would be gut-wrenching to bury your loved ones that in reality should be burying you first. I've watched this first hand and it is nothing I would personally want to experience as a parent." Her thoughts went to Tad for a moment but snapped out of it quickly.

"I think it was for science really and a challenge of whether or not it could be done. Once it was done it was easy for him to use it and see if it truly worked, why he kept using it for so long is his own thoughts, but I don't think it had to do with death, not really, just a man of knowledge who wanted to see if he could make this happen." Her eyes back on Rowena, 'What do you think ma'am, if you would have had the stone, would you have used it to stay alive?"
After a moment, her eyes drifted over to a girl, one she had spoken to in the hallway the night she had found herself outside of her portrait. Now, she brought up a good question. Personally, it was a little difficult to answer. Her own death had come early, produced by betrayal and a broken heart. Why would she wished to use the stone to prolong such pain? Rowena watched the girl for a moment, considering her answer... and then decided to avoid it altogether. "Keep using your mind like this, young lady, and you'll go far." It was a compliment.

Now, at this question, Rowena almost laughed. Sure, the girl was young, but what were these students even being taught at this school these days?! "Oh, my dear. Perhaps if your history lessons were decent, you might know the answer to that!" What a shame!

"That would be a really unsafe decision on his part," she responded. "There wouldn't have been enough ingredients for everybody in the whole world to live off it. Plus, it was a really unsafe invention." Case in point...Voldemort wanted control of it. Anything that man had wanted was bound to be a disaster just waiting to happen. Not to mention the fact that people aren't meant to live forever. You just can't fight with fate and expect to win. Flamel was a smart man. He knew that.

Anyway...

Isla left her seat to collect the poster board and some ink. An activity sounded fun, even though she wasn't sure what they were going to do with all this if it didn't involve drawing. The first year returned to her seat, laid out her materials, and waited for whatever this was to begin.

Kodee Chosen was a prime example of everything that was wrong with this school. Whether or not they believed the House Founders to be real (Nina wasn't entirely sure what she believed at the moment), you didn't just reach out and TOUCH someone. No wonder students died at this school. It was a wonder how Kodee had made it so far himself, honestly. With the 'let's just touch it and see what happens' mentality, Nina couldn't fathom that he had made it to his seventh year in one piece.

But seventy five points? ..... And a detention? Coming from someone who wasn't meant to be alive?

Nina didn't move to grab her supplies right away. Instead, she looked over at Professor Recard to see what she would do. Was she going to let this happen? It would truly be a testament to her character either way. That and Nina hated art activities.

What did it feel like? "Like us...I guess...but not as warm." He replied to Bernie, the only one who'd shown any interest whatsoever in finding out what they may truly feel like. The way he saw it, soon enough the founders would be sent packing. How many would be able to say they'd gotten a touch before that happened?

Well, you could add Bernadette to the count. From his seat, Kodee had caught the way she'd managed to cop a passing touch and was quite pleased she'd pulled it off.

"Definitely life like." He agreed to her muttered words. The Professor's words, he cared somewhat less for. "You're only harping on his debt." He told her. "I gave a ton of reasons why he'd suddenly wanna be dead. Why d'you only care about the amount of money he carried in his man purse?" Sheesh, the man was long dead. Any money he'd made wouldn't profit her in the slightest. Maybe she should try being less obs--

What?

75 points and detention and ...that...detention...she planned to...

What started as his best attempt at holding in a laugh quickly erupted into a proper laugh. The back of the chair was the only thing that prevented the boy from being bent double at the woman's...threat. Oh Merlin, ooooh Merlin, just when he thought History of Magic would never be interesting. "Oh, certainly Professor Ravenclaw." Kodee snickered. "Will you be wanting me to polish your portrait frame?" Detention? A dead woman was trying to give him detention. Even more, she was trying to overrule Recard and THAT was the funniest bit. "Pass, I'll keep listening to my actual professor, but thank you. I needed to be woken up some. Someone gimme me one of those board things and some ink?"

Why get up when there were others already standing?

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine didn’t know why Chloe was looking at her like that. Maybe the Ravenclaw was surprised to be reminded that the Stone was used for more than just immortality as Recard said. The Slytherin herself never knew what it’s like to be poor but she would have liked to think that Flamel might have and empathised with the less fortunate. She answered Recard’s question without much thought for the response was very much predictable in her opinion. “Because he wasn’t that type. He was probably content with what he had.”

Suddenly, Claudine was perking up. Arts and craft? Art was her element and a wave of excitement went through her which made her forget all about Rowena and Kodee’s detention and point loss. But then Recard deflated her. No drawing? How rude. Still, she made her way to the front to collect a poster board and three different colours of ink.

Blake smiled at Professor Recard, she was at least trying to help him recover without drawing massive attention to his fearfullness of the founders walking out and about, no matter how many times he had seem them. "Exactly, sometimes you just want to test something to see if it can be done." He added responded to her question.

Moving on, he went up and got himself some paper and some blue ink, it was always fun to write in different colors rather than the standard black all the time. And then heard the 75 points ................. Merlin's Beard!!!! That seem a tad unfair ....

Naya listened as the professor responded to her comments. Nodding as the professor spoke, the Gryffindor went on to further explain her answer. “It’s the latter, I think. If Flamel was alive for a longer period of time, he would have more time to do good things. Hence his greater positive impact on humanity, as you said.”

Naya smiled when she found out there would be poster boards and ink involved in the next part of the lesson. She was a little disappointed that there wouldn’t be any drawing involved, but it could be fun nonetheless.

Naya was just about to go get her supplies when things seemed to go off the rails. Rowena Ravenclaw kind of took over and began speaking to various students. Apparently she was not holding anything back. 75 points taken from Gryffindor? Seventy five? Sure Kodee was rude, but was it seventy five points worth of rude? No fair punishing all of Gryffindor with that many points taken away for his cheek. Could she even do that?

Tempted to sit back and continue to watch things unfold, she decided against it. Naya went up to the front of the class and got a poster board and some carefully chosen ink. If they weren’t going to draw, she was going to make sure whatever she did looked good.

WHOOOAH 75 points PLUS detentions. Wow that's a lot to take in.

Jillian smiled at Professor Recard, she's quite pleased with it but overall she really is learning a lot. She thought for a bit when she gave her a followup question about Nicholas Flamel. True that he should have continued with more experiment and discoveries after the Philosopher's Stone because he was basically immortal at the time but then again Jillian thought of a possible reason as to why he didn't and to an extent why most scientists stop like he did "Because i think creating the Philosopher's Stone was an end game for Nicholas Flamel." she started "when he started studying about it he didn't know what his outcome would be. He probably thought that his chances in creating it were very slim but he still dedicated his entire life to study it." which most scientists do. "So when he finally became successful at it after years and years of studying, creating and researching it was one of those 'what now?' moments." she said. Maybe he finally started to live his life after that. Who knows really. All of this is hypothetical- unless Nicholas Flamel bursts into that door and give everyone a lesson about his life.

Ohhhh arts and crafts without the drawing. Maybe she should have brought her paintbrushes today in class. With the professor's go signal, Jillian got up from her seat and took a few art materials, eyeing those adorable looking quills before going back to her seat, She placed all of the materials she took on top of her table. What will they be doing today?

She got an answer from Rowena and Chloe wasn't sure what to do with it. Between the founder and the professor praising her she just blushed a little and listened to the others. She liked feeling like she was being useful in class and this really made her feel that way.

As Kodee spoke again she just kind of giggled to herself, as much as he was driving the professor nuts he was funny. Though she did try to hide her laughter because the last thing she wanted to do was upset their professor.

Getting up out of her chair she headed upfront once they were told to come to get supplies. That was one thing she always hated about history class, most of the work was either art or reports, they rarley had anything else, which she understood, but still hated.

Now, at this question, Rowena almost laughed. Sure, the girl was young, but what were these students even being taught at this school these days?! "Oh, my dear. Perhaps if your history lessons were decent, you might know the answer to that!" What a shame!
Oh no she did NOT.

Gabriela felt her blood boiling as this woman - portrait - whoever she was had the nerve not only to insult her teaching abilities, but also tried to undermine her authority by giving Kodee a detention and docking him 75 points! SEVENTY FIVE POINTS. Growing up, Gabi had always known that she was not a fan of the know it all attitude that Ravenclaw house seemed to emulate - and now, if this woman was indeed Rowena Ravenclaw in the flesh, she knew now without a shadow of a doubt that she completely loathed it.

"Alright, you've had your fun. I'm going to ask you once to leave or I'll have to summon Headmaster Trent," she told the woman, showing great restraint in the fact that she hadn't taken her by the arm and thrown her out of her classroom herself. No, she had to be a model to her students, and violence was never the answer.

Deep breath, deep breath...Gabi had taken care of the Ravenclaw situation (at least, if the founder had any sense, she would heed her warning and leave her classroom immediately) and she turned back to the young Slytherin, closing her eyes for a moment as she re-centered herself. "Good thinking, Miss Bellchant," she told her with a soft smile at the Slytherin's rebuttal to her answer. She could have kept up a discussion with her, but they had to move on, after all!

"Money problems and debt are statistically the largest source of anxiety in people's lives - I'm just going with what you brought up earlier," Gabi pointed out to the Gryffindor, quite enjoying the way he was thinking outside the box, to be quite honest. If he had just applied himself more in class and didn't give in to his every impulse, maybe he'd be more successful.

AND he had stuck up for her to Ravenclaw! Gabi wouldn't let him know how truly pleased that had made her, of course, but she smiled at him. "Thank you Mister Chosen. Your original punishment of two points lost stands - please disregard what she said," she told him, as if that weren't already obvious...

SIGH. And then he had to go do THAT. "Please go get your OWN materials, Mister Chosen," she said with a small exasperated sigh.

"Excellent response," Gabriela told the young Slytherin, appreciating the way she had thought about her answer and entertained the discussion for her. The younger students were actually doing quite well for their age in this debate - she expected more of the OWL and NEWT students. Tsk tsk.

Pleased that Blake looked less...ill, Gabi smiled at his answer before moving on to the next response.

"It's always intriguing to try and think of how people may have impacted history if things had been different, isn't it?" Gabi smiled at the young Gryffindor before making her way back to the class. Her discussion was clearly winding down, which was fine by Gabi. They'd gotten so off track thanks to their little intrusion by this Ravenclaw imposter - so she was more than ready for some light arts and crafts time.

Gabriela had decided to simply act like Ravenclaw was just...not there anymore. If she had anything more to say, she would simply have to say it to Trent, because she was not entertaining this NONSENSE anymore. She had a class to run - and her curriculum was planned out brilliantly and her lessons were delivered flawlessly, despite what the woman seemed to think.

"So for our little arts and crafts project - we'll be making chocolate frog cards for ourselves!" she said with a grin. She picked up another box from the table and started to make her way down the aisles of desks. Inside were templates for their chocolate frog cards to make them look as authentic as possible. "Chocolate frog cards are one of the best ways to introduce young witches and wizards to history. Flamel obviously has his own card, and is also mentioned on Albus Dumbledore's card - if you recall, that was how Hermione Granger created the connection between the Philosopher's Stone and the mysterious trapdoor at Hogwarts guarded by Fluffy," she reminded them all as she continued passing out the templates.

SPOILER!!: Click me for template!

"Those poster boards you collected earlier are charmed to become photographs. All you need to do is simply imagine your favorite portrait of yourself, and TAP the board with your wand. Viola! It'll instantly appear on the poster board. Use that, along with the template, to make your chocolate frog," she explained. It was much more convenient to just provide them the materials instead of asking them to bring a photo and risk having them forget.

"Of course, that's not all we'll be doing. In addition to making a chocolate frog card of yourself, I'd also like you to write a small blurb about your accomplishments. What do you want to be remembered for? Do you want to be a famous singer? An accomplished alchemist like Flamel?" she smiled at them. She wanted them to use their imaginations and let their ambitions run wild! "It doesn't need to be a novel, just a small paragraph of 3-4 sentences will do. I'm quite excited to see what you all come up with, even if it's a little ridiculous!" she admitted. If any of them had ever seen a chocolate frog card - which she would bet just about EVERYONE in the room had - they would have an idea of what she was looking for. Oh, this was going to be thrilling! Even if Ravenclaw continued to hover about.

"Alright, have at it! You have the rest of the class to work!" she announced before clapping once again - her sign to get going - and letting them loose to work.

OOC: MAIN ACTIVITY YAYYY! So it's a pretty self explanatory activity - make a chocolate frog card and write a historical blurb about yourself that you would find on your card!
  • You do NOT need to make a graphic to accompany your card if you are not graphically inclined. If this is the case, please describe IN DETAIL what your characters photo looks like, OR save a picture of your character that they selected to your OWN IMAGE ACCOUNT and post it in place of the chocolate frog card
  • PLEASE USE YOUR OWN IMAGE ACCOUNT to upload any graphics! Do not hotlink! I cannot stress this enough. If you need help with any of the graphic related parts of this assignment please let me know!
  • If you do choose to use a photo/graphic please do not post anything larger than 200 x 200 pixels. Anything larger should be hidden under a spoiler tag like I used for the template - if you need help with this please ask!
  • As Gabi said, the description for your card doesn't have to be more than 3-4 sentences long. Imagine what your character's wildest accomplishments could be and have fun with it!
  • YOU WILL HAVE 72 HOURS TO COMPLETE THIS ACTIVITY (aka until Monday night CDT). Gabi will be around to help y'all if you need help, just put it in the title of your post!
  • To get full points, you simply have to post your finished card and your description! Points will be awarded for details and creativity
  • As always SS and SS RPG rules apply. Thanks!

Phoebe's whole face scrunched at the professor's question. Why hadn't Flamel given his potion to everyone he knew? If she had it, she'd give it to Teddy and Tavie and Yoyo and Cece and Flynn and Kizzy and her parents and maybe even Kaiser and some of the older and un-lame kids. She certainly wouldn't hoard it to herself. But Flamel had hoarded it.

"Maybe you can't make much at a time, and people will be crazy. You know, they say that two can keep a secret if one of them is dead. The more people he told and shared with, the more people could blab and then jerkos like You-Know-Who would be showing up every other day trying to get some potion." Or maybe he was selfish. He was French, after all.

Phoebe kept that bit to herself as she retrieved her poster board and began working on her frog card.

Cole was happy to hear that his ranting hadn't been for naught. Professor Recard agreed with him that Flamel's motivation hadn't been money for the stones creation. Furrowing his brows in thought he battled with the question she followed up with for several minutes in silence before he answered tentatively with a look over at Professor Recard. "I think Flamel might have wanted to share the advancement with the world at first, but when he together with Dumbledore unearthed and tested the powers of the stone they probably decided that it was best to keep it hidden and secure for the greater good. The stone would have caused great damage in the wrong hands."

Then of course Kodee had to put his sock in it with his rudeness. 75 points from Gryffindor and a detention if Founder Ravenclaw got her way though sounded very harsh to Cole's ears. Kodee hadn't been that disrespectful and rude had he? Getting up from his seat, glad for an end to the discussion he went up front and got his own poster board and a packet of colourful inks. Back at his desk Cole listened to the next set of instructions. They we're supposed to create their own description for a chocolate frog card....

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

It wasn’t difficult to see that Recard was trying to hold it together as that Ravenclaw- looking person was seemingly trying to take over the lesson. Claudine felt sorry for her professor and just wished they’d uncover whomever was or were pulling off these awful pranks of impersonation. As for Recard’s praise for her? Claudine was very pleased. This year, her second year, she was learning that one of her strengths was thinking logically through situations and debates. She nodded to Recard, a small smile on her face. Thank you for the encouragement, Professor.

Chocolate Frog cards. How interesting! Claudine felt her excitement mounting again. A little project was always interesting during a lesson. She was quite impressed by the fact that all they had to do was think about the photo they wanted to use, tap the poster and the photo would appear there. Magic knew no bounds.

The Snakette looked down at her poster and imagined the most recent photo of her that had been taken (which had been over the summer with a few family members). She had no trouble isolating herself from the memory of the photo so she quickly took her wand and tapped the poster. Claudine watched in amazement as her image appeared there.

Wow.

Now she just needed to move the image to the template, yes? The Severing Charm which she had only recently perfected would come in handy for this.

Blake imaged in most recent picture .. when was it .. who knew, but none the less he imaged it with a poof and a tap on his poster board his face appeared. That's kinda cool, they were making their own chocolate frog cards ... but then ... what on earth did he want his to say? He was unsure what he even really wanted to be in life? A healer perhaps, prior to being expected into Hogwarts he had thought about being a muggle doctor, and he had worn that costume to the Halloween party after all.

Okay taking out a piece of parchment he began to write.

His research and effort has gained us a spell for patients to have there memories and bodies returned them (if only for a short while). He continues to research more long term effects to his spell work.
.

There that seems satisfying.

A chocolate frog card of themselves?

Now, who would ever want one of her? She wasn't anything special nor did she think she be the most famous or most amazing to be put on a card someday. She was just hoping to be good enough to make a professional team at this point and even that was slipping away the longer she went without really playing quidditch.

Biting her lip and really thinking she tried to figure out what she would really say on the back of a card. What did she really want to be known for? She started writing about quidditch and picked a German team since she wasn't sure yet if she wanted to play for Germany or Britain. Soon she was scratching that out though. That was not how she felt at the moment. She was having huge self issues when it came to quidditch. The longer she didn't play the more self-conscious she was getting.

She started writing again and soon she was finished with the writing part:

Quote:
Chloe McCarthy famous by some, but her determination to keep being better is what made her known by many. She is best known for her time as a professional quidditch seeker, where she earner herself many cup championships. Her passion in life was off the pitch as much as it was on, what got her a picture on a card was not quidditch alone, no, but her efforts in helping many realize their self worth in the world and to show so many they were valuable and loved.
so she was rereading and satisfied with what she wrote so she looked to the next step.

Jina watched Rowena Ravenclaw - her house founder? - for a moment, feeling very very confused by everything, then decided to focus on the task. Making her own chocolate frog card! This was going to be fun. She doubted that she would ever be accomplished enough to actually make it onto a card, so this would be nice to imagine.

She imagined a portrait of herself, then tapped her poster board with her wand. The image of her appeared on the board, just the way she wanted. She placed the template over her portrait so that it really looked like she was in a chocolate frog card. Now to write about her “accomplishments” … Although she was already a sixth year, she was not sure what she wanted to be in the future. She liked studying Arithmancy and Potions the most, so she had considered pursuing a career in those areas. But what she wanted most of all was to help people in need. After thinking some more, she picked up her quill and began to write.

Rowena seemed to be...behaving herself, which was a relief to Gabriela. She was already formulating what she was going to say to Trent about this when she dismissed class. You could be sure she was going to march RIGHT up to his office when this was through!

So far everyone seemed to be grasping the assignment well. Gabriela continued to pace the room, peering at their work with interest. She couldn’t wait to sit down and grade this and really read all their descriptions in earnest!

“Keep up the good work everyone!” she encouraged them all.

OOC: Good work so far everyone! Don’t worry, you still have a good 24 hours to get your projects done!
