As you enter the History of Magic classroom, you may notice it is arranged a little differently this time. Instead of the typical rows of desks, there are tables, each with four chairs, lined in neat rows. In the middle of each table is a wooden box about the size of a large jewelry box. The lid of the box is closed.
In addition, there is a black curtain hanging up behind the final row of tables, separating this section of the room with the tables from the rest of the room. Don't try to sneak a peak if you sit in the back row - the curtain won't budge even if you try. Whatever lies in that section of the room is completely concealed.
Professor Amstern stands by her desk at the front of the classroom, ready to greet students as they enter. On the blackboard behind her, there is a note written:
Quote:
Please do not touch the boxes on the tables.
Class will begin shortly.

Ary was quite used to all the early lessons by now, and so it was now a habit to be fully awake long before he stepped into one of those early bird lessons. Today was no different. He was all set to learn something new about Wizarding History, or else refresh his memory about things he had forgotten.
Smiling at the sight of Amstern, the Slytherin wiggle-waved his fingers in her direction. Hi, Professor! Now, he surveyed the classroom’s setting as he headed for one of the tables. The closed boxes instantly grabbed his attention, his dark gaze fixed on the one at the table he had chosen to sit at. And what was with the curtain? Since Ary hadn’t selected a table towards the back, he couldn’t subtly investigate. That was all fine, however. He would simply busy himself by getting his books ready.

It was bright and early, but Aurora was more than ready for class. At this point she was more than used to getting up early, and as long as she had gotten a good sleep the night before her mind was sharp.
”Morning, Professor Amstern.” She gave her a smile then turned her attention to the class set up. Well, this was certainly different. And she was curious to check out the boxes, but she would be good and resist temptation. The black curtain was also tempting, but instead of going over to check it out, she took a seat beside Ary. ”Hey,” she said to her friend, giving him a playful nudge.
As she waited for more people to arrive, Aurora busied herself by taking out everything she needed for class.

Jan arrived with his friends in tow, he would've thought his little brother would hang with him today, but he was going off in a different direction with.. aha, no surprise. He smiled walking in with Ary, "Hello Professor!" Before he saw no desks, but tables now.
Naturally, Jan went to sit at the same table as his bestie, Ary, and Rory had joined them. "Hey," He smiled at them. He saw the boxes too, but the board did warn them not to touch it, so he didn't and waited for the lesson began.

Tiffany arrived looking immediately for the sister, but figured she'd went off in another direction. She frowned at the layout of the classroom - only one seat remaining with Ary, Jan, and Rory - but she figured Bry or Emma would probably be along shortly and want that last seat, so Tiffany decided to start a new cluster.
"Hi Professor," she quipped, taking note of the box in the middle of the table and not the note on the blackboard behind the woman. Which meant of course, after Tiffany's waves at the two slytherins, plus Aurora, her hand went to grab for the box, curious as she was....

Ah, first arrive was Mr. Atreyu-Rehman. Vashti returned the smile and the wave. "Good morning," she added, though she did not expect a response. He was an excellent student, finding a seat and preparing for the lesson.

"Hello, Mr. Grunt," Vashti said with a smile. Having watched how often students' friend groups sat together or worked together throughout the term, it was no surprise to see him join the table he did. Friendships certainly made lessons more enjoyable, as she knew from her student days.

"Hello, Ms. Rose," Vashti greeted the girl with a smile.
It seemed she hadn't seen the instructions on the board though - or at least, Vashti gave her the benefit of the doubt that that was the case. "Not just yet, Ms. Rose," she cautioned gently. "You'll find out what's inside soon enough."
With a glance at the clock and then a flick of her wand, the door to the classroom closed. It was time for class to begin.
"Good morning, everyone," Vashti said with a smile. "Today, we're going to be narrowing our studies to focus on one particular person from history. And to find out who that person will be, we'll begin with a little activity." She gave her wand a flick, and the lids of the boxes on the tables disappeared.
"I want you to figure out who these items belonged to, and to answer a few questions about them. What importance or usefulness do each of these items have for that person? Why does it have that usefulness or importance? Even if you're not sure who the person is, make an educated guess." This wasn't a quiz, so wrong answers weren't something to worry about. They could prove enlightening in showing one's thought process, even if they were incorrect. "You may discuss with your peers at your table if you wish, but be sure to write your answers down too." And Vashti would be around as well, in case any questions came up.

Was it any surprise that Ary and Jan chose to sit next to each other during yet another lesson? Nope, not in the least. He glanced at his bestie, wondering just how curious he was about those boxes and that curtain. Then there was Rory joining the table, bringing a nudge along. “ Hi, you.” With a grin, the Slytherin poked the Hufflepuff in the arm. As for Tiffany’s wave, Ary’s Housemate received his signature finger wiggle-wave.
Oh, look at that. They needn’t wait forever to find out what was in the boxes. Ary learned forward eagerly, peering into the one on the table he sat at. He thought the jewelry was nice to look at, and he recognised the coin easily. Yet it was the glasses that gave the answer - the figure they’d be focusing on - away.
“Those items belonged to Luna Lovegood,’’ the guy told Jan and Rory confidently. He picked up his quill thoughtfully. What he really wanted to know was if these items truly belonged to Luna and how Amstern had come to access them. For now, Ary wrote Luna’s name in capital letters then underlined it. “Aside from the coin being a method of communication from Dumbledore’s Army, I think that maybe it would have been important since it reminded her of that time. Perhaps she enjoyed being a part of the group very much?” He fell silent now, offering his friends a chance to pitch in with their thoughts.
Xerxes listened as his teacher gave the class instructions. He carefully examined the items on display in the boxes. Nothing seemed familiar to him. Xerxes was not entirely familiar with Wizarding History, you see. He had studied Greek History and, more thoroughly, Greek Mythology; but had never taken an overt interest in the History of Magic. Sure, he knew a few key dates and facts from his parents, but they were probably the sorts of things that everyone would know: common knowledge, as they say.
Xerxes would have to figure this mystery out another way. He had a secret weapon in his back pocket (not literally of course). He reached down for his school bag and took out a small leather pouch, which was filled with small stones and smooth pebbles. He also extracted a plain wooden cup. Putting the stones into the cup, he began to swirl the stones clockwise with his dominant hand. He then, in one motion, turned the cup over and gently strew the stones over the table.
Once he put the cup down, he closed his eyes and focused on the items in question. He then, eyes still shut tight, placed his hands about two inches above the scattered stones and moved them left and right over the pebbles. He listened attentively for any trace of ancient magic; any whisper from the Greater Universe being sent to him on a chariot of cosmic rays.
He suddenly opened his eyes. His answer had formed in his mind's eye, and he better write it down lest it disappear back into the abyss. His (left) hand scrawled the name: Luna Lovegood.
Setting down his quill, Xerxes raised his hand and asked, "Professor, does the name Luna Lovegood mean anything to you?"

Vashti made her rounds about the room as the discussion and the writing began. Soon, she drew near to this group’s table, and she nodded approvingly at Mr. Atreyu-Rehman’s insight about the coin. Good thinking.

Vashti observed Mr. Cadwallader's process with curiosity, choosing not to interrupt. Interesting, indeed. "It does. Certainly a relevant name in history," she replied. "What does it mean to you?"
And now the allotted time had passed, so it was time to continue on with the lesson.
“Excellent work so far, everyone,” Vashti said as she returned to the front of the room. ”As many of you correctly figured out, these items are replicas of ones that belonged to Luna Lovegood.” With a flick of her wand, the name appeared on the board. “I wanted us to begin with some things that were more personal to her, to guide us in our efforts to understand her as a person. Sometimes it can be difficult to put oneself into the mindset of a person that lived a long time ago, especially one who was born more than a century ago, but understanding things that they cared about can help us in getting one step closer to understanding them.
“So, to continue onward, let’s discuss what else we know about Luna Lovegood, whether it's about her accomplishments, the historical events she took part in, or something else about her life. You may refer to your textbook for this, if you wish, but please try to stick to one fact in your answer.” There were many things that could be said about Luna, after all.

Truthfully, Xerxes had never heard of this Luna Lovegood before. When his Professor asked him as much, he replied "Honestly it doesn't mean much of anything. I divined the name from the casting stones. Let me have a look-see in my textbook."
Xerxes opened up his textbook and went all the way to the back. Hidden amongst the index was a listing for the very same person they were discussing in class. He flipped through the pages until he found the very entry he was looking for.
After reading, Xerxes raised his hand and said, "According to the textbook, she was a schoolmate of the famous Harry Potter. Apparently she took part in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside him."

Ary continued to make his notes as he and his friends moved along with their discussion. He even offered some more thoughts about the other objects, but it soon came that time when Amstern had his attention once more. It came as no surprise the items, which turned out to be replicas, belonged to Luna Lovegood. The Slytherin also wholeheartedly agreed that it could be difficult to get into the headspace of those who existed ages ago.
He took a moment to ponder before raising his hand, having decided again referring to his textbook. “Luna was kidnapped during the second Wizarding War as part of Voldemort’s scheme to pressure her father, who was the editor of the Quibbler, into stopping his publishings of articles that supported Harry Potter.’’

As the lesson began, Aurora immediately picked up on the fact that they were going to be learning about Luna Lovegood. She nodded At Ary as he voiced the same thought as her. "I know that she thought that the cork necklace protected her from Nargles." As far as how they supposedly did that, she was at a loss. Aurora started taking notes, waiting to see if Jan would have anything to add on.
The lesson continued, and Aurora raised her hand to answer the question. "She later became a famous magizoologist. She discovered and classified many new species of magical creatures."

"She was indeed," Vashti said with a nod. "And a very difficult time it must have been for her and her father." It was easy to empathize with the fear a parent would feel for his child in that situation and how it would lead him to do anything to keep her unharmed.

"She certainly did," Vashti replied, nodding. "She contributed so much new research and knowledge to her field and to the wizarding world because of it." And gaining more knowledge about the world they all lived in was invaluable.
As each student gave an answer, words appeared on the board, creating a list of facts beneath Luna's name. They reordered themselves as needed to follow a timeline. And once there was a pause of a few seconds with no hand raised, it was a good time to move on, though not before Vashti included a few additions to the list herself with a quick flick of her wand.
“Great selection, everyone,” she said. “I've added a few more to our list we've gathered here, but of course, these are just a handful of notable things about Luna. If we tried to cover everything about her and her life in depth, our lesson would go on far longer than the time we're allotted today.” She wouldn't mind, of course - she could talk about the person of Luna Lovegood and the events of this time period for hours on end - but it was likely the students had other ways they preferred to occupy their time. So a general overview with some moments of diving deeper were the focus of the day.

“There is one more aspect I do want us to hone in on before we move on to our final activity,” Vashti continued. “As Mr. Areyu-Rehman mentioned, Luna’s father, Xenophilius Lovegood, was the editor for The Quibbler. Prior to the Second Wizarding War, he and the magazine were known for publishing stories that most people would consider… well, quite strange, to put it diplomatically. Some articles were truthful, such as the interview with Harry Potter that was published in February 1996, while other stories were far more fanciful, like the article that asserted that Sirius Black was actually Stubby Boardman, the rock star.” Quite the imagination Xenophilius Lovegood had, that was certain.
“Perhaps unsurprisingly, Luna took after him in his beliefs. But was that the only reason? Do you think she believed in things like wrackspurts and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks only because of who her father was? Would she have never believed in them if she was part of a different family? Or would she have come to believe in them on her own terms at some point? How do you think these beliefs impacted the choices she made in her life?” She was very interested in their thoughts on this. There were no wrong answers since some questions were purely hypothetical, and they could not ask Luna herself for her thoughts. But it was another exercise toward understanding Luna Lovegood as a person, so any opinions on it could be enlightening.

Ary had to agree with Amstern. He could imagine the devastation his dads would feel if any sort of thing should happen to him. However, he decided not to dwell on such thoughts by dedicating his energies by making notes. There were so many interesting facts about Luna! This made him wonder what interesting facts would be mentioned about him, if such a time ever came.
Lost in his thoughts, he was slightly startled to hear the mention of his name. Ary pulled himself together. Oh, they were delving into a tiny bit of information about Luna’s father? As Amstern continued, he nodded to himself slightly. Yes, he had heard about some of those wild articles that had been published. Luna, though, sounded so interesting with those beliefs.
For the questions asked, Ary knew there was no right or wrong answer, just one’s opinions. He raised a hand after a moment. “The persons you grow up with can have a big impact on your life. Their beliefs can be something you easily learn to believe, especially if you learn those beliefs from a very young age. But they can change as you grow older and you start forming your own opinions.”
Xerxes thought about his answer before raising his hand and saying, "Her father's peculiar views certainly had an influence on Luna's beliefs. Most people tend to parrot their parents beliefs, at the very least for their childhood years. If she had been raised by a different family, she would probably have believed the things that the other family believes in."
Xerxes didn't particularly know a lot about the unconventional beliefs to which his Professor was referring to. But in general, he believed what he said about children and their parent's beliefs.
Xerxes own parents had certain beliefs and convictions. They believed in an intersectional approach to magic. They often drew on many different magical customs, cultures, differences in practice. And Xerxes had been raised with all of these beliefs in mind. He certainly had his own mind and own ideas, but his parents had certainly been an influence.

Oh look at that, they didn't need to wait a long time to find out what was in the box. Tiffany peered into the box, inspecting them. They seemed familiar to her, but who they belonged to? She hadn't read the chapter on Luna Lovegood yet as she fingered the glasses a moment before placing them on her face. She hoped it was okay, but surely Professor Amstern hadn't indicated they weren't allowed to wear the objects.
Whoever this Luna Lovegood character was, one thing remained clear: indubitably she was quirky and individualist. She didn't care what others thought about her.
Which led her to answer the next question offered by Professor Amstern. "What Aryan said about growing up and forming one's own opinions, i think holds true but also Xerxes on mentioning family upbringing shaping our opinions. I think no matter how much she might have tried to change her opinions, she was undoubtedly shaped by being a Lovegood and being raised by her father. Of course that's not to deny her as an individual," she took the glasses off only then realizing she had still been wearing them, and set them on her desk "It's more just ... well, yes, had she been born into a different family, she no doubt would have come to believe different things."

"Excellent point," Vashti agreed. "Children are like sponges, always absorbing and learning about the world, particularly from their family, but of course, that doesn't mean those ideas are set in stone." That was a huge part of growing up, and even then, adults could change their minds too.

"Very true." Vashti nodded. "Family plays a big role in the beliefs and ideas a person starts off with. A different environment to grow up in could fundamentally change a person in significant ways."

"That's certainly true too." Vashti nodded. "Many things undoubtedly have an influence on a person, especially family, and just how much they maintain the same beliefs versus how much they change as they grow up depends on each individual."
A glance at the clock told Vashti it was time to continue on. There was still some time left in the lesson, but it wouldn't be long before it was time to wrap up and let the students move on to their next class.
"As we have discussed, Luna Lovegood was certainly influenced by the family she grew up in and the experiences she had throughout her childhood and adulthood. She would be a very different person if all of those experiences had never occurred, and in turn, the wizarding world would be different too. Those new creatures she discovered may have remained hidden from us even now if not for Luna being inspired by her beliefs in things like Crumple-Horned Snorkacks and Blibbering Humdingers." Vashti paused by her desk. "So for our activity, we'll be imagining life through the eyes of a young Luna Lovegood, searching for wrackspurts."
With a wave of her wand, the curtain vanished and finally revealed the back half of the room. It appeared likely that an extension charm had been used on the classroom because there was a large, mostly-open storage space with various shelves along the walls and a few other sets of standing shelves, both tall and short, set haphazardly around the area. The shelves contained a random assortment of items and knickknacks like vases, magical and mundane creature figurines, and colorful plaques with cheesy inspirational quotes. There were even a number of Luna-related items to spot, such as fake dirigible plum plants in tiny pots, a lion hat, and hare-themed jewelry.
A pair of Spectrespecs also appeared on the tables in front of each student. "Luna used her Spectrespecs to find wrackspurts. As far as we know, they were not among the creatures she discovered later in life. But for this activity today, these Spectrespecs are charmed to see them - or rather, a representation of them. Your task is to catch them and place them into one of these buckets." An assortment of colorful buckets appeared on her desk. "Wrackspurts can be found anywhere in the classroom. Be careful though - once you spot one, if you don't collect it quickly enough, it might disappear and reappear elsewhere in the room.
"So, please come up and collect a bucket, and put on your Spectrespecs. We have about fifteen minutes left for this activity." Once the students put on their own pair of Spectrespecs, they would see the previously invisible “wrackspurts” hidden around the room, each one giving off a faint, soft glow. They could be found anywhere - on the shelves, inside a vase, behind a pot, or even under one of the tables. "You may begin."

OOC: Had a few things come up and it took me a little longer than expected to get this post up, so thank you all for your patience The main activity is open until July 14 around 10:00 PM EDT (approximately 70 hours from now), and then we'll begin wrapping up the lesson.

Luna growing up and becoming the woman she had been in the way she did, had been exactly what the world needed. As Amstern pointed out, certain things may not have happened if Luna life hadn’t been what it was. So imagining life through her eyes would be quite interesting.
Ary watched with fascination as the curtain was finally removed to reveal a bigger part of the classroom than one would have thought possible filled with shelves along the walls. The items that stood upon them were just as interesting with the Slytherin thinking that he recognised a few items that could have been Luna’s. Well, not truely since they no doubt were replicas.
What a cool activity!
Leaving his belongings sorted neatly on his desk, Ary collected a bucket and a pair of Spectrespecs. Slipping the glasses on, he marvelled at the feel of it on his face. Was it just him or did the world seem to be painted in a different hue? Slightly pinkish-ornageish? Oh, look! There was a blue ‘wrackspurt’ hovering right there, where the curtain had partitioned off the rest of the room before. Ary weighed his options. If he crossed the distance to manually pluck the wrackspurt from the air, he might startle it. The Seize and Pull charm might be a bit too much, plus there was the chance of the thing fleeing if it saw a rope shooting towards it. His best chance…
“Immobulus!”
In an instant, the wrackspurt froze leaving the sixth year to snag it from the air and add it to his bucket.
