Video: Rhys Ifans cast as Xenophilius Lovegood in Deathly Hallows (UPDATED)
Rhys Ifans (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Vanity Fair, The Boat That Rocked) confirmed on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross tonight that he has been cast in Deathly Hallows. He spoke about being fitted for his costume whilst out filming in Spain for Mr. Nice a couple weeks ago. Photos of Rhys can be seen here.
While he did not say which part he would be playing, we believe that he'll be taking the role of Xenophilius Lovegood.
In related news Jason Isaacs (Lucius) is due to appear on the show next week on April 3rd on BBC1 at 10:35pm BST.
UPDATE: The interview during which Rhys announces his casting can be watched below. Rhys talks about Deathly Hallows at about 5:55.
For some reason, I never thought of Xeno as Welsh, but for some reason, it does kinda fit. Considering Evanna Lynch (Luna) has an irish accent, though, it might confuse some people.
Just because he's Welsh that doesn't mean Xeno will be.
I won't lie -- I'm rather disappointed to hear this. And for 2 reasons.
First, while I think Rhys is a quality actor, I'm sorry but he just feels too young for Xeno.
But actually more importantly, for awhile now I'd reeeeeeeeeeeeaally been holding out some hope that the producers would find a way to cast Stephen Fry in this series, and Xeno seemed the PERFECT part for him in what's obviously the only movie remaining to be made. I thought they would've cast him if nothing else as a thank you and a tribute for the truly awesome job he did in reading the audio versions of the entire series. In fact I've still not read a single sentence from a Harry Potter book, I went thru the whole saga just listening to Stephen read it to me in his great voices.
And now that Xeno's cast, I can't really think of any other solid part that they'd think it worth it to get Stephen for
^ By that logic, they'd have to cast Jim Dale too.
I see where you're going of course, but I don't think necessarily. I mean, even aside from having done the audio books, Fry is a lifelong character actor of the screen, he fits right along with all of the other "who's who" of UK greats they've filled the cast with along the way. Jim Dale, he primarily (if entirely) does voice work, doesn't he?
I suppose. I just don't think they shouldn't do novelty casting, particularly since in that instance it'd be typecasting, of sorts. He'd been seen as Stephen and not Xeno, I think.
