| | The trials & tribulations of translating Potter
The release of a new Harry Potter book brings with it many challenges for the unsung heroes … the official translators. A Potter book release often signals the start of a race to the finish for translators worldwide, as dedicated fans and pirates alike attempt to get their versions up first, sometimes within days of the English release. Even Ukranian translator Victor Morozov, who worked 15 hours a day to be the first to get an official translation completed in just 66 days, had to admit: Quote:
The pirates are getting so good, it's difficult to tell which is the original.
Another hazard of translating Potter comes in the form of eagle-eyed fans who aren't afraid to give translators an earful if they spot an error. Quote:
... Gili Bar-Hillel from Israel, note(s) correction letters from readers of ... translated editions. She laments, "Every mistake will follow me the rest of my life. The readers are young and unforgiving."
And finding just the right counterpart to all the colorful names and words unique to the Harry Potter world can be tricky, and time-consuming, as well. Quote:
Severus Piton sounds snaky, but not as sneering as Snape. Albus Silente conveys quiet authority, but ignores Dumbledore's archaic meaning: bumblebee. The Norwegian version was formed by adding humle (bee) to snurr (spin), also suggesting surr (buzz). Not only rhythmic, Humlesnurr captures Dumbledore's sting in the tail.
Tom Marvolo Riddle is an anagram of I am Lord Voldemort. To preserve this, his middle name becomes Vandrolo in Hebrew, Marvoldo (Turkish) and Orvoloson (Italian). He is Tom Elvis Jedusor in French, Tom Sorvolo Ryddle (Spanish) and Trevor Delgome (Icelandic).
Most translators will be breathing sighs of relief with the publications of their Deathly Hallows translations coming ever closer. Morozov, in a quote eerily reminiscent of one made by Dan Radcliffe a few months ago, no doubt speaks for many of them when he stated: Quote:
I'm glad this is the last book.

We spent time here. We made friends here. That's a part of us.
Cause Hogwarts is bigger than any of us, of any of it's founders,
and it's going to be around long after we're gone.
Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.
That's the thing about Hogwarts.
No matter how long you're away from it, there's always a way back. |

And even being careful as they say they are, some translators really make mistakes that ruin the sense of some words, like the Spanish translation of Legilimency and Occlumency. They translated the preffix legi as lege, wich is totally different in meaning, and mency into mancia, which changes from reading to divinating or guessing.
And I don't know many others because I have only read the Spanish versions of CoS and HBP.

I've always sneered at the Norwegian name translations because they are much more transparent than the English ones.

They shouldn't have taken the job if they didn't want the pressure.
Joking, wow, I feel really sorry for them, that is why I now decree that I will never translate a much anticipated book with fans waiting to maul me when I screw it up, because I would most definately screw up somehow, someway.
Major respect to those that translate the HP books, even if they do make some mistakes!!

Interesting... I never really thought about translating the names correctly... But I like all of Riddle's translations.
Vandrolo...Marvoldo...Orvoloson... and Trevor Delgome? Where does that match up?
He is Tom Elvis Jedusor! I guess he really is the king.
