Harry Potter, at your service May 5 2003

By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

WIZARDS from Hogwarts spelled out a Christian message yesterday.

The Rev Sean Robertshaw, dressed as kindly Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter stories, to lead the service at St David's Church, Holmbridge, to preach the Christian ethos to children.

"We have just taken the idea of Harry Potter and we have adapted it, using some of the stuff from the books to reflect Christian values," said Mr Robertshaw, team rector of the Upper Holme Valley.

He was joined on stage by lay reader John Beverley, as the giant Hagrid, and church warden Sue Thompson as witch Minerva McGonagill.

They are seen with young Ben Brook as Harry Potter.

Mr Robertshaw said: "We get children involved in the service. It's fun, they really enjoy it.

"It gets a really good response. We have taken it into some schools. It's celebrating Christian values.

"There's a little bit of pantomime. We dress up and take on the characters and present the story."

B)
Now that idea I like. Im a full on Christian and I love the Harry Potter stuff. Im so glad someone has mixed the 2, I think its brilliant.
However, on this note, I know that there are some Christians (not all, trust me on this) that do not believe Harry is right for them. I ask you (anyone who believes like I do) that we be patient and gracious with them. I would like to shed some understanding on the subject. Imagine that you were prone to alcohole and that you would get drunk everytime you even tried a bit. Imagine that you decided it was best to give up and for you and your family you did. Tell me, how would you react after giving it up to being offered another beer? Christians are not born christians, many of them have pasts they are ashamed of but Jesus has shown His love for them and helped them. I used to be into tarot cards and a bunch of other stuff and I gave it up, tarot cards is not of God. I dont want anything to do with stuff other than God, but Harry is only fiction and in fiction it is what the author has defined something to be. If the author in her fiction book is writing about elves we must not connect them to being the same elves we know from other books (eg: Lord of the rings- see the huge difference?) If she defines the magic and wizardry one way we must not tag it with something else. But some people dont see what the author has seen only what they know and they are very dedicated (which is not nesseccerily a bad thing) and dont want to go near anything that may seem like stuff they shouldnt.
I commend these people for being so dedicated, but I also ask them to look closer and see if it is 'beer' that is being offered or apple juice.
Also I commend those that have taken a gracious stand for Harry in the Christian world, very brave, but I ask you to be considerate to those who are battling to come to terms with Harry.
As I said before, I think that Dumbledore thing was a great idea.
Awesome to you guys!
Love
Chaz
