| | | Reading Potter a sign of brain power?
The BBC's Science & Nature section contains an article about a nine-year-old boy who once had difficulties keeping up with his schoolmates in the classroom. Thanks to fish oils and Omega-3 fatty acids, he's now doing much better. Quote:
But over the past year, a dramatic change has taken place in Elliot. He has soared through the Harry Potter books and now heads to the library after the school bell has sounded.
Quote:
Elliot has been taking part in a scientific study on more than 100 children from 12 Durham schools. The children were required to take a course of capsules with their meals for the duration of six months.
Quote:
“His reading jumped 18 months [over the trial period]. He’s just a lot more interested in everything. He’s even developed an interest in classical music,” says Sheila, Elliot’s mother.
This article was read to my Biological Foundation of Behaviour class by our professor. As my friend shrewdly observed, " How do they know it wasn't reading Harry Potter that did it?"

Slightly off topic, but I must commend Mikaela on her article writing skills. Never have to edit a single thing in yours and they're always so well researched and informative!

Thats amazing! I use to have trouble reading when I was younger and it was a certain book for me that made it all better. It is great to see that HP was that book for someone. I wish it was around when I had the trouble! |

That is definetly true fact though. My cousin can't sit still long enough to read, but the HP books... he'll actually sit down and read for hours! (My cousin had ADD and ADHD)
Mikela- The SS quill might still have a position open

That is really fascinating. I bought those tablets for my kids, but decided to try again when they are older, as they were too big and it's hjard enough to get them to eat anything let alone something that smells of fish!
I do agree on the Harry Potter books increasing literacy though, as since they've been around more kids are reading now than before.

I use an oil mixture that includes pumpkin seed oil and the Omega-3s from fish, but it doesn't smell and it's OK with O.J...
I agree, HP is the real cure Hee hee!
Thanks, Emma! I guess I just got really lucky with cool HP items lately And I'll check out the Quill... And thanks everyone for your nice comments *glomps back*
