In a recent interview with the Irish Times Charlie Higson, author of the young James Bond novels, spoke about what J.K. Rowling has done for those who write literature for children.
Quote:
“The children’s book chart was originally created because books for children wouldn’t show up in the bestsellers’ list. They created their own list, and now they have to keep the children’s chart because if they put them back together there would be no adult books on it – apart from people like Dan Brown. All of us kids’ writers are eternally grateful to JK Rowling for opening the eyes of publishers and of the media generally. Now, kids’ books are respectable.”
When I read in Melissa Anelli's book that JK Rowling is the reason they created a Children's Bestsellers list. I was AMAZED! The effect she has had on the literary world is ASTOUNDING!! I don't even think there were midnight releases for books before JK Rowling came around.

You know that's pathetically true when adult authors are trying to write children's or young adult books like James Patterson and Clive Cussler and Carl Hiaasen. I mean the man writes adult books, not just books for grown ups but adult books even they see a bourgening market ... sadly it's opened the doors for a lot of lackluster talent ...
I used to watch the young James Bond cartoon show ... James Bond Jr. I miss that show ... LOL

That's in the US. As Charlie said, in the UK it was created because kid's books could not compete with adult sales. Now, the opposite is the case.
Harry Potter is considered a children's book still, which somewhat surprises me. From the first few books, I can see why they were considered to be for children; however, after the plot got darker and more complex, it can be considered more of an adult book. Really, the labels they put on books (children/adult/teen) don't mean anything. All that matters is that people enjoy reading whatever they are reading.
