Post John Kenney talks turning down Potter

John Kenney, an editor who declined to publish 'Philosopher's Stone', has spoken in The International Herald Tribune about why he chose to turn down Potter. He insists that he does not regret the decision and refers to parts of the book as 'drivel'.

Quote:
February, perhaps March of the next year, I received a call from J.K. Rowling herself. She asked if I had had a chance to read her manuscript. I'm always embarrassed when fledgling writers get me on the phone. Most are sad, lonely people with no real means of income.

I said I enjoyed her work a great deal, but that it didn't meet our needs at this time - the standard industry brushoff. There was a pause and I thought the line had gone dead when I heard laughing. "Mr. Wortham," she said with a light British accent. "I was calling as a courtesy, actually. To tell you that I sold the book. To Scholastic. For..." The line went dead. Or perhaps I passed out. I forget which.

My wife left me. Did I mention that?
Quote:
At lunch some time later I overheard our chief executive talking about the success of the Rowling book. So I happened to mention, with a chuckle, that we'd had a chance to buy it.

Why is it that one remembers a long pause? "Chief?" I said, though to this day I don't know why, as no one called him that. "You what?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly. "May I speak with you in my office?"

This fellow truly makes me giggle. He must be a very strong man to look back upon such a grevious mistake and laugh about it.

I found the whole article very entertaining. His tongue-in-cheek writing style had me hooked from the first paragraph. I'm glad he's written a book. I'll probably at least give it a shot.

Haha it is really his loss. His choice, his problem, his mistake As if you would ever turn away something like HP, must have been delusional.

His wife must be super hard core Harry Potter fan if she left him because of that...Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.
If this is true, he should´ve let his wife read the book before turning it down

Poor guy ... But is this story actually true? I mean no reasonable person would have mentioned such thing to their boss, if the boss is talking about the book sales at the moment ... Oh, I understand ... He definitely wasn´t in Slyherin

This poor man, not only did his dad turned down 'Goodnight Moon', and he HP, but he also turned down 'Cold Mountain'. Although, from my perspective, it might have been these combined losses (Cold Mountain and Harry Potter), that lost him his job. I know if I had been his boss, after Cold Mountain came out, I'd have kept a close eye on him to see he didn't stuff up again.

I truly feel sorry for him, as if losing something as big (and I'm not talking money wise), as Harry Potter isn't going to make him just a tad bitter. Again... poor bugger.

Hah! Just by reading those quotes I can tell that it would be an extremely funny passage to read....the poor guy who let such an amazing story slip through his fingers. I bet he's still quite sour about it.....I'd love to meet him and brandish my copies of HBP and the PoA film...possibly also the price tags...Aw that'd be so mean of me.....*chuckle*...yeah I still think I'd do it....bwahahaha....

very entertaining
