Post J.K.Rowling talks family, depression & fame

Showbiz Spy has some moving quotes from the recent documentary J.K.Rowling...A Year in the Life, in which Jo speaks about her family life, the depression she suffered following her mother's death & the breakdown of her first marriage and the things fame has brought.

Quote:
The mother of three admits her mother’s painful death influenced her writing. “It has seeped into every part of the books,” she said. “She would have odd losses of feelings in limbs, her balance was poor for a long time and then it got worse and worse and she decided it was time to visit the doctor.

“She had a very virulent form of the illness and at that time there were no drug treatments at all.”

The hit author opened her heart by admitting she regrets not seeing her mother’s body before her funeral.

“I wanted to see her but my father didn’t want me to see her and I mistakenly agreed not to,” she said. “I deeply regret that. I really wish I’d seen her. It didn’t matter what she looked like. It would have made things easier.”
Quote:
“I’d had a short and quite catastrophic marriage. I had to get my baby back to Britain and re-build us a life and adrenaline kept me going.

“It was only when I came to rest it hit me what a complete mess I had made of my life. That hit me quite hard.

“We were as skint as you can be without being homeless and at that point I was definitely clinically depressed.

“That was characterised by a numbness, a coldness and an inability to believe you will feel happy again. All the colour drained out of life.”
The documentary can be watched here.

I can sure relate to what Rowling went through! I lost my mom two years ago and my dad seven weeks and one day later. I have been undergoing treatment for depression for a little over a month now. I divorced my husband decades ago after a marraige that lasted a little over three years and struggled as a single mom to raise my two daughters. Now here I am writing my first book! I hope to have it finished in a month or so now that I am settled.

I almost envy those who have a reason to be depressed. I don't know what's harder... suffering losses and becoming depressed, or being depressed regardless of circumstances. Battles with depression, regardless of "reason," are always difficult and never fun, though. It's been 12 long years of depression, and having to piece my life together through it. But I have to say, anyone who has faced depression and managed to muddle through it is incredibly strong. I know I still doubt myself, and fight to keep going, even with a successful marriage (okay, only two years), 2 incredible children, and the encouragement from friends and family to go back to school and write my first book.

Yeah, Jo's story is a sad one but since her creation of Harry Potter her life has become a lot better as well as many other peoples lifes which were touched by Harry.

The way she described depression is very accurate. You feel like a total failure in life, and it will never get better. You have no hope for a better future. I respect her for pulling out of it.

Reached and Spanked 1000! The Snitch

I think that it is a bit "car crash" hearing Jo talk about her life like that. Kind of uncomfortable, but you can't help but watch.

Unfortunately, bad things happen and it's great that not only did she become so great in spite of those bad things, but she's great because of them. She didn't let it overcome her (which is so easy to do), but she took it and turned it in to something productive.

It's one of those things that you look at someone's life and see all the glory and good things. It was nice to watch the documentary and see that even though she gets the good and the bad, she's still grounded. She isn't embarrassed by her wealth neither does she flaunt it. A good role model all round, I think.

I swear that if I came across that first husband of hers I don't know what I'd do Not that I'd be able to actually recognize him, I believe, but still

Yeah, death was some sort of motif in the books...though no one died in PoA! but still...there were deaths in all the other books...

Whoa! Very nice interview. I can't completely understand what she has been through in her life, simply because it hasn't happened to me. Jo is a strong woman and a great inspiration to all.

That is some crazy stuff! She did a wonderful job of putting her pain into books though. I felt so much pain for Harry and Dumbledore and the Weasleys
