Post HP quotes in Children's Dictionary

The Oxford Primary Dictionary has included citations from the 'best of children's literature', including quotes from the Potter novels written by J.K.Rowling. The use of the quotes is intended to show children how the words can be used in sentences in order to display what the words mean.

Quote:
"Insolent, adjective - very rude and insulting," says the Oxford Primary Dictionary. Then it quotes from The Prisoner of Azkaban: "Malfoy gave Professor Lupin an insolent stare, which took in the patches on his robes and the dilapidated suitcase."

"Haphazardly" is explained by a quote from The Chamber of Secrets: "Mrs Weasley was clattering around, cooking breakfast a little haphazardly, throwing dirty looks at her sons as she threw sausages into the frying pan."

And Professor Snape makes "malevolent" easy: "'A bad idea, Professor Lockhart,' said Snape, gliding over like a large and malevolent bat."
The Oxford Primary's editors say good authors "provide wonderful citations for dictionary definitions because the language and vocabulary they employ is straightforward, descriptive and helps children to understand meaning and context right away."

They add that their "choice of citations from texts children are intimately familiar with sets a fantastic example for children and helps improve their reading and writing skills".

Other writers quoted in the dictionary include Charles Kingsley and Philip Pullman.

Default 1st to post! wicked!

JK is astute to use highbrow words within her texts.

Notwithstanding, i myself have found that JK's use of words in an inventive manner to be creative and thought-provoking.

JK does make them easy to contemplate buy simplyfying them in her books.

*and yes i have used my thesaurus for this post *

JK is an excellent word weaver. Her writings encourages young reader to learn words they did not previously know. I am glad she expands my vocabulary with so many new words. Sometimes I've heard the word before but only verbally and I didn't quite get the meaning. However when JK uses them I can see them like Draco's snide sneer at Lupin robes and understand immediately it is insulting.

That's really interesting but also a bit weird to explain words to children with quotes from HP ...
Well as "iamoscar" mentioned before it just shows again that JK is a really good author.

That's cute. A lot of children I know who usually don't read have taken some comfort in the HP books for some reason. I'm glad somebody got around to using Harry Potter as an educational tool. Why did that take so long?

That is really awesome! A great idea to help kids understand definitions by putting them in a context they can relate to! Brilliant!

Yeah. I am so happy that so formal a source has basically imortalized JKR's writing. The academic community has come to understand some of the signifigance of Harry Potter and its positive effects on young people.
