Harry Potter cast in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Page Eight, Great Expectations

An assortment of Harry Potter actors and filmmakers have re-teamed beyond their post-Hogwarts careers in a few upcoming theatrical releases and productions.

The first off is the now December 9, 2011 release (September 16 in the U.K.) of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Gary Oldman as "espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons." The all-star cast includes many of Oldman's former Harry Potter costars, including John Hurt (Ollivander), Toby Jones (Dobby), Ciarán Hinds (Aberforth), Simon McBurney (Kreacher), and Roger Lloyd-Pack (Barty Crouch), as well as Academy-Award winner Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy. The trailer for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, as well as a teaser poster featuring Oldman's character Smiley, can be seen below.

Harry Potter producers David Heyman and David Barron headed the BBC production of Page Eight, which already aired in the U.K. this past Sunday, but will hit U.S. television network PBS Masterpiece on November 6, 2011. The film stars Harry Potter alumni Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, and Ralph Fiennes; a summary and trailer is below.

Johnny Worricker (Bill Nighy) is a long-serving MI5 officer. His boss and best friend Benedict Baron (Michael Gambon) dies suddenly, leaving behind him an inexplicable file, threatening the stability of the organization. Meanwhile, a seemingly chance encounter with Johnny's striking next-door neighbor and political activist Nancy Pierpan (Rachel Weisz) seems too good to be true. Johnny is forced to walk out of his job, and then out of his identity to find out the truth.

Set in London and Cambridge, PAGE EIGHT is a contemporary spy film for the BBC, which addresses intelligence issues and moral dilemmas peculiar to the new century.

Finally, Ralph will join former costars Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix) and newly-announced Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) in the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, directed by Goblet of Fire helmer Mike Newell, and set to begin production the U.K. this October.
Robbie Coltrane is joining the new film adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations as orphan Pip's legal guardian Mr Jaggers.

The Cracker star is to be reunited with Harry Potter co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes in the film, which begins shooting in London in October.

Producer Elizabeth Karlsen told The Daily Mail she knew Coltrane was the man to play the imposing Mr Jaggers as soon as he walked into the hotel foyer where they were meeting to discuss the role.

She said: "The command he had of the room was astonishing."

Helena will play Miss Havisham and Ralph has been cast as villain Magwitch. Jeremy Irvine - who stars in Spielberg's film version of War Horse - will star as Pip and The Scouting Book For Boys' Holliday Grainger will play Estella.

I loved the Great Expectations book, so a movie should be interesting ... but I keep on picturing Hagrid as Mr Jaggers, and a half-giant in a moleskin overcoat doesn't really fit ...
