Post Deathly Hallows reviews online (spoilers!) (UPDATED)

With the release of Deathly Hallows on Saturday, reviews of the last Harry Potter book are slowly appearing online.

It goes without saying that these will more than likely feature SPOILERS, so if you haven't finished reading the book, don't read this article.

Like with the Order of the Phoenix film, this article will serve to accumulate as many online reviews of the novel as possible.

-------------------

The Scotsman:

Quote:
But if readers are expecting an emotional wallop, I fear they may be disappointed. For all its epic swagger and portentous tone, the overall effect is rather like being pelted with softly boiled eggs.
SPOILER!!: Rowling has taken care to develop characters...
that might have been - or indeed, previously have been - stereotypes. There is room for generosity, not only towards Harry’s Muggle tormentors but to the misguided villains, the Malfoys. There are also moments of weakness for the heroic, and heroism from the weak. If part of growing up is seeing the world in shades of grey, then the Deathly Hallows succeeds, despite its black and white moral universe.

SPOILER!!: The prose is sometimes risibly clichéd
: take, for example, "she was kissing him as she had never kissed before, and he was kissing her back, and it was blissful oblivion, better than Firewhiskey; she was the only real thing in the world". Sentences are clotted with adverbs - "milkily pink" seems particularly inelegant, a snake "rose, seemingly endlessly" - why not just endless? The dialect is straight out of ’Allo ’Allo at times: Fleur says "whezzer" for "whether", Krum says "vunce" for "once". It is hardly the subtlest form of dialogue.

--------------------

The Telegraph:

SPOILER!!: By the final chapter Rowling...
has created the perfect balance of sadness and triumph. But then she ruins it by adding what I can only describe as a blatant attempt to not have to write another Harry Potter book, by summing up the entire future of characters in a few pages.

It seemed like Rowling cared more about finishing the book rather than finishing it well. This cheesy conclusion ruins the atmosphere of the entire book and the hurried manner it is done in only angers me more. The final segment of the book feels added, as if joined on at the last minute and really should never have been there.

I disagree with that statement too! *pokes it*

I have to say, her diction [word choice] is very amazing! I mean, where does she come up with fancy words, accents, and even names!

Don't be dishearten HP fans, critics tend to be frustrated writers that don't have the talent to write themselfs. Of course since he's a critic means all the millions of us that bought these books faithfully over the years have no taste! Guess we need to go back to only things like Broke Back Mountain and War & Peace. AS IF!!!!

Well duh, they are not from English speaking countries of course they are going to say it differently. I have to say that I disagree with just about everything that this reviewer has said.

I thought it was very emotional, so I disagree with the top. I thought the epilogue may be a bit too light-hearted, but it provided closure and brought up curiosity and other tales which were interesting.

The second quote is very true.

hmm, I did think some parts were a bit cliche, but sometimes things just are cliche. I quite like JK's style of writing (obviously), I didnt think there was a problem with her prose.

You know, there are some things that I not only did not like in the book. I HATED some things in the book. But that doesn't mean that I thought the book was poorly written or too cliche. I think this man was possibly thinking that JKR was going to write the last novel for him. She can't appease everyone in the world. She did what was best for the story as SHE, the author, the creator, saw it. As long as she knows it's the right ending, no matter what we think, we know it is the only way it could ultimately end.
