| | |  Deathly Hallows: Part I semifinalist for 2010 Academy Awards in Visual Effects
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their long list of potential nominations in the Achievement in Visual Effects category for the 83rd Academy Awards, to air live on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Amongst the 15 semifinalists is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. The full list can be found below. Quote:

• "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader"
• "Clash of the Titans"
• "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1"
• "Hereafter"
• "Inception"
• "Iron Man 2"
• "The Last Airbender"
• "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief"
• "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time"
• "Scott Pilgrim vs the World"
• "Shutter Island"
• "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice"
• "Tron: Legacy"
• "Unstoppable"
The list will be shortened to seven in early January; and on the morning of the Oscar nominations, Tuesday, January 25, 2011, five will be chosen as those up for the 2010 Academy Award. Will will have much more on the semifinalists and nominations in January as they are released. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has now been released worldwide. WOW I really hope it wins an Oscar, it deserves it, and I want all the cast to come to LA lol
but the competition is tough, Alice in Wonderland had really good visual effects, but I dont know about the others, I havent seen them

Deathly Hallows Part I will have a legitimate shot at this. Why? Because the academy generally looks for how well-implemented the effects are. They look for films that use effects the most naturally, instead of ones that try to dazzle. Deathly Hallows Part I is one of the very few fantasy films I've seen that actually treats the effects in a realistic manner instead of using them as a means to draw attention.
Take Dobby's death, for example. Dobby is completely CG, yet the cinematography and effects work is so realistic that it makes it feel like a character played by a live actor is dying in Radcliffe's arms, rather than a CG creation. It is simply astounding.
Here's me hoping for a nomination, and a win.

That is some TOUUUGH competition. There are some awesome movies on that list, and I like the visual effects in a lot of them more than I like the ones in DH Pt 1.
