Post Deathly Hallows: Part 2 top-grossing 2011 film in U.S. & Canada; 3rd all-time int'l

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has now surpassed Transformers: Dark of the Moon today, becoming the top film of 2011 in the U.S. and Canada. As of Tuesday, August 9th, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought in $344.9 million in the domestic box office, just passing the third installment in the Transformers series, which has so far made $344.7 million since its release in late June 2011.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is also now the third highest-grossing film of all time in international markets, behind filmmaker James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic, and has thus far brought in $1,136.0 billion. It is assumed that the film will probably never pass Titanic's record of over $1.8 billion, especially given the blockbuster's 3D re-release in 2012.

Why must James Cameron keep "re-releasing" his films? You'd think he'd be satisfied the first go around and go make something else, haha.

But yay, go Potter!

Not true - re-releases count as part of the overall gross; several of the top movies are higher up on their list because of them (including, yes, Avatar). Star Wars: A New Hope (the very first one) is an obvious example of this, when it was re-released in 1997 and made well over $100 million extra in the US/Canada.

Nice

And I didn't even realize that a third Transformers movie was out...which doesn't bother me any. I'm not a fan of the Transformers series anyway .

It may not bet Titanic, but I am making my meagre contribution by watching it again and again in the cinema!

Woohoo! I'm so proud of everyone who worked on this movie and made it so amazing.

But...Titanic in 3D? That sounds kind of bad, as much as I love the original.

That tells two or three things: 1) There's so many fans going more than once; 2) The hype and buzz were gret and there are so mamy curious movigoers; 3) Inflation has done quite the job.

I'm not surprised at all. I wish it would move up the list but I highly doubt it.
