| | |  Deathly Hallows boycott ends in Malaysia
Three major bookstore chains in Malaysia - MPH Bookstores, Popular Book, and Times The Bookshop - held several thousand copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from customers in protest of non-traditional outlets such as supermarkets Tesco and Carrefour offering the book at discount prices. The three chains, about 100 bookstores in all, refused to sell 32,000 copies of the Deathly Hallows to walk-in customers for three days following the book’s release. Only people who preordered the book were allowed to purchase it.
The boycott ended today after the bookstore chains and the Malaysian distributor, Penguin Books, reached an understanding. According to Penguin Books: Quote:
We agreed not to prolong this anymore. Customers are the ones who suffer because they can’t get the book.
We’re not cry-babies, but we believe that hypermarkets should not use these books as a loss-leader. If this continues, there might be no future for booksellers.

A boycott sounds a silly idea. Surely if you keep them from customers then even more people will just buy the book from supermarkets.  |
