Post Daniel Radcliffe returns to Broadway in drama play 'Privacy' this summer

Daniel Radcliffe will return to the Broadway stage this summer in the drama Privacy, which will have a very limited run from July 5 - August 7, 2016 at the Public Theater.

Quote:
“Privacy” takes a look at privacy in the digital era through the lens of what is revealed about the life of a lonely guy (Radcliffe) through the digital trail he leaves. It sounds like some audience participation will be involved, too, since, according to reps for the show, theatergoers will be asked to keep their cell phones on throughout the performance.
This is the Harry Potter star's fourth foray to the Broadway stage - Dan starred in the dramas Equus and The Cripple of Inishmaan, and the musical revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) and the Donmar Warehouse (Artistic Director, Josie Rourke; Executive Producer, Kate Pakenham) will present PRIVACY, a new play co-created and written by Olivier nominated playwright James Graham, and co-created and directed by Olivier Award winner Josie Rourke. Graham and Rourke’s most recent collaboration, The Vote, a play for theatre and television, has just been nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Award. As part of Oskar Eustis’ 10th Anniversary season at The Public, PRIVACY is a timely exploration of the digital age that will feature a cast of seven, including Daniel Radcliffe as “The Writer.” PRIVACY will begin previews for a limited engagement on Tuesday, July 5 and run through Sunday, August 7 in the Newman Theater, with an official press opening on Monday, July 18.

“Privacy is delightful and chilling, incredibly friendly, and profoundly thoughtful,” said Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. “James Graham is quietly becoming one of our bravest playwrights, and Josie Rourke is a director, and leader, to be reckoned with. This first-time collaboration between The Public and the Donmar Warehouse is, we hope, the start of something wonderful. I’m thrilled to welcome them.”

“Privacy has at its heart a debate about modern life and we at the Donmar Warehouse cannot therefore think of a better partner than The Public Theater to bring this new play to American audiences,” said Director Josie Rourke. “James and I have been across the U.S. interviewing everyone from politicians, historians, campaigners – even an etiquette expert – about American attitudes to privacy. The show is a risk-taking, fun, and stimulating piece of theatre, that we hope pushes at the boundaries of audience experience. We’re thrilled to be working with this exceptional company and world-class theater, The Public, to share this play with New York.”

In addition to Daniel Radcliffe as “The Writer,” the cast will include De’Adre Aziza, Raffi Barsoumian, Michael Countryman, Rachel Dratch, and Reg Rogers, playing an ensemble of real-life high profile politicians, journalists and technologists who have all contributed exclusively to the show.

Daniel Radcliffe is appearing with the permission of Actors’ Equity Association. The Producers gratefully acknowledge Actors’ Equity Association for its assistance of this production.

Inspired by the revelations of Edward Snowden, PRIVACY explores our complicated relationship with technology and data through the funny and heart-breaking travails of a lonely guy (Daniel Radcliffe), who arrives in the city to figure out how to like, tag, and share his life without giving it all away. The play uncovers what our technological choices reveal about who we are, what we want and who’s keeping track of it all. This provocative theatrical event will ask audiences to charge their phones, leave them ON during the performance and to embark on a fascinating dive online and into a new reality where we’re all connected...for better or worse.

"Personal privacy in the modern age – when all our wants and fears can be monitored and monetized as we share more than we have before – is, I believe, one of the most crucial issue of our time,” said Playwright James Graham. “I can't think of a more appropriate venue to launch Privacy than – paradoxically – The 'Public'; to get people together in a physical space to discuss both the opportunities and the perils of this new technology and our life online. And by incorporating our audience’s phones into the show itself, rather than denying their existence, we’re hoping to create an experience and stimulate a debate unlike anything people may expect from a play.”

Interesting concept. Wonder if the audience is supposed to keep their cells on so every time one rings of bleeps he'll be all like "SEE WHAT I MEAN?!"
