Post Daniel Radcliffe laments on suicides amongst LGBTQ youth in new statement

In a new public statement, actor Daniel Radcliffe lamented the loss of several gay youths who took their own lives as a result of the stress and harassment they felt growing up. Dan, a spokesperson for The Trevor Project, a 24-hour hotline dedicated to assisting LGBTQ teens in crisis, had this to say.

Quote:
"Learning about the suicide deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Asher Walker, Billy Lucas and Justin Aaberg has been heartbreaking for me. These young people were bullied and tormented by people that should have been their friends," Radcliffe said. "We have a responsibility to be better to each other, and accept each others' differences regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, or religion and stand up for someone when they're bullied."

"When a friend is feeling depressed or says they're thinking of killing themselves, we must take it seriously and get them help," Radcliffe continued.

"My deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of these excellent young people. And to all the young people who are being bullied right now, you are not alone. Call the Trevor Lifeline at 866 4-U-TREVOR, because there's always someone there who will listen and who can help."
For more information on how to help, head over to The Trevor Project's site.

Moooooooo. :) || Have a supermegafoxyawesomehot Christmas.

First time I've heard of Clementi's death, I was like "What? He only started college!" and then they went on about how his roommate posted that vid of him...sad indeed.

Can't believe so many people still make fun on others because of that. Good job Dan.

It's those bullies who should get shut. Not the kids they bully around.

I love the way Dan gets involved in so many worthy causes.

direct diva

Those two scumbags who filmed Tyler Clementi deserve manslaughter charges against them, not just simple invasion of privacy. Their actions directly led that man to kill himself. That is unexcusable. Applause and kudos for Dan for saying something about him, and speaking out for all the others who don't have the voice to do so.

Dan's so sweet to be supporting these kids. I know a bunch of kids (both guys and girls) because i go to a uni-sex school, so we always talk about this stuff. It's nice to know that people out there really do care. And it's total crap that they had to commit suicide because of what other people thought of them. It's really rather sick.

^^^I agree. There are plenty of people trying to defend their actions but it's disgusting that anyone would ever want to play such a "prank," as they called it, on someone at all. It's sad to see ignorant peope like this living amongst us in general when it comes to bullying someone because of their skin color, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and other differences.

When I first heard about Tyler Clementi's death, I was thinking as Jen, said, about how had just started college and how he'd never get to experience that. I hope his death sends a message to other people who view people of different identities as inhuman. Hopefully, if anything positive comes from his death it will be that it will change other people's views on differences in this world. And good for Dan for speaking out and taking part to make a difference.

What a kind and caring person Daniel is. I wish all persons could have the compassion and empathy for all humans that he seems to possess and at such a young age.

I applaud Dan for this. The only problem I have is that bullying is starting younger and younger. I know this for a fact because my 9yr old was bullied in kindergarten by her own cousins. She was afraid to tell us because she didn't think we'd believe her. After we took care of that situation, everything was fine, until we moved her to a new school in 2nd grade. There is a girl that is the same age as her and is constantly calling her names and making fun of her. It was only in school until she got into trouble for it, but has recently started up since she knows where we live. My oldest daughter is very tall for her age and slightly overweight. Looking at her you'd think she was close to being in middle school. She's very shy and very gentle. She's a prime target because of that. I hope and pray that in all this something gets done for the younger children too because they won't tell you...they hide it...then it grows into what happened to these unfortunate souls. It's so terrible how children treat those that are different...

Such a terrible tragedy!

I think this is such a positive thing that Dan is doing and I think it's fabulous that he uses his fame to promote something so desperately needed in our world - tolerance and acceptance.

Bravo, Dan.

Friends and I have been lamenting the loss of these precious young lives for weeks. To show support, people across the world will be wearing purple on October 20th in remembrance of these young men! I'm wearing purple on that day. I recommend that you do too!

I agree with Dan about how sad it is for young people to be bullied and tormented, for any reason. Its cruel and I really wish people would try to put their self in other people's shoes, remembering not to judge others.

The article should be titled Dan is a love because he is. Bullying really is a horrible problem everywhere. It's depressing to think that it can lead someone to decide to harm themselves. The people being bullied need to realize that there is help out there for them, and the bullies too, because they're just frightened or misinformed people who should look to getting help for themselves as well.

I pity the bullies as much as the kids being bullied because they're just heartbroken people destroying themselves by hurting others.

It would probably do well for everyone to truly learn that, "if you can't say something nice you shouldn't say anything" because even silly, joking throw away remarks can be seriously harmful. I can't stand how people say things like 'that's so gay' or 'don't be a girl' like disparaging any group for any reason is empowering, in the end it weakens us.

I wish stuff like this had been around when I was a kid

Though I wasn't bullied for who I wanted to date I was bullied for being the chubby girl, but alas I've moved on from that.

But I think more than congratulated Dan on just being decent I think that we need to do something about bullies. Even every sense. Not just against sexual orientation.

I think all of us are guilty of laughing at a joke at someone else expense. I'm a big enough person to admit that, but what we have to understand is that little giggle plays into the culture of bullying. And we all have to have a hand in stopping the bullying.

So yes pat Dan on the back for speaking out, but also do your part as well. And we might just get a handle on this problem.

Daniel is such a nice guy.I mean...Even though he's such a busy person, he finds time for dealing with such causes. Many people used to say that Daniel is gay,but HELLO! Anyway, I think that`s one of the many reasons HP is better than Twilight (which is a crap by the way): the actors are actually trying to help people, not just worry about how beautiful they must look or how to become "the sexiest man/woman alive". Sorry if I offended anyone, but that`s my opinion. *looks worried*

I think that there is something seriously wrong with people who bully others because of their skin colour, gender or anything else. I believe that these people need serious treatment because they're the ones having issues.

I feel very bad for these guys that killed themselves; it is unfair. And I thank Dan for talking for them, and for supporting them, he is a ray of hope for many out there.
