Daniel Radcliffe participated in several interviews to promote Thursday's premiere broadcast of A Young Doctor's Notebook at 9pm GMT on Sky Arts, where he chatted with ShortList and Radar magazines about working alongside Jon Hamm, Kill Your Darlings, and moving on from Harry Potter. Dan on comparing the great impact author Mikhail Bulgakov's had on Russian language to that of the success of Harry Potter, to Radar:

"It is," says Radcliffe, "something that has. It's in the collective consciousness of a generation, and there are words that are now filtering into the language, like Quidditch and Muggle. It's a shared set of references, I suppose, and it's quite universal. Potter was so massively wide-ranging, and read by everyone."

I'm always pleased," says Radcliffe, and he sounds as though he means it, "to be associated with something that was so important. And it's not just a franchise. It's only really in the past few years that that word has been bandied around, and it makes everything seem very cold and business-like. We were always wanting to prove ourselves and get better with every film."

Dan chatted to ShortList about the miniseries, as well, and was coy about the chance of starring in an adaptation of Frankenstein, and shooting Kill Your Darlings at Columbia University earlier this year.

“It’s hard to explain this show,” says Radcliffe. “You start saying it’s about a Russian doctor in 1917 operating on people for the first time and then he eventually gets addicted to morphine. But I promise it’s a comedy. What’s unique about it is this combination of gruesome blood and a heart-breaking journey into addiction.”

On his on-screen fight with Hamm:
“I’m surprisingly robust,” says Radcliffe. “I’ve been training with the stunt department since I was 12 – I love all that. And I’m pleased because I gave Jon a good punch. I came out of it quite well.”

“The person I’ve been looking at is Dustin Hoffman,” he admits. “In fact, I passed him the other day and he is absolutely on the shorter side, as am I. But he was in all those great roles, from action thrillers to romantic stuff. So there is a way of doing it unconventionally if you don’t necessarily look like the 6ft romantic lead.”

[Radcliffe]’s been linked to a part in a similarly gothic reimagining of Frankenstein, this time as the doctor’s humpbacked assistant, a role he’s being frustratingly coy about. “It’s something I’d be interested in...”

On Kill Your Darlings:
“We weren’t hopped-up all the time,” he laughs. “But what was great was that Dane (DeHaan – who plays Lucien Carr), Ben (Foster – William Burroughs) and Jack (Huston – Jack Kerouac) went for a gang mentality. We sat around, had a laugh, and got to know each other in 25 days.

“The script was one of the best I’ve read. There was a sense that if we could just film this, then we’d have to go a long way to f--- it up. And we’ve improved it by virtue of the way it was filmed – in a guerrilla style.”

“We were kicked out of Columbia University at 4am in the morning,” Radcliffe laughs. “We were running through the campus trying to knock off one last shot before we got expelled from the premises. These drunk college kids were just like, ‘What the f---?’ And I was in Ginsberg gear with a perm.”

Kill Your Darlings will have its world premiere this January at the Sundance Film Festival, it was announced earlier this month. While the actor has not flat-out admitted it, Dan pretty much confirmed to ET Canada at the Whistler Film Festival that he will be at Sundance in January to promote the feature's release.

Additionally, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, starring Dan's former Harry Potter costar Rupert Grint, will also have its world premiere at Sundance. No word yet on if Rupert will be in attendance, though we will update as soon as we hear more on the premieres.
