| | |  Book Banning Decision Appealed
Turned down in an attempt to ban the HP books from the school her children attend, Laura Mallory has appealed to Georgia Board of Education. Earlier this year SS carried a story concerning the attempted book banning of the Harry Potter books in a school system in Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA. The Gwinnett School Board ruled that the woman's request was without merit and the HP books stayed in the school's library. The state board is set to make its ruling this Thursday in Atlanta. Laura Mallory, whose children attend J.C. Magill Elementary School, presented her appeal in October to the state Board of Education. The Gwinnett board ruled unanimously in May that the best-selling series by J.K. Rowling could stay on the shelves.

OMG! I don't get this! Maybe if she read the books then she would realize that they aren't that bad! So many books out there have witchcraft and magic and things in them. Why is she only going for HP? I really think that she has nothing to go against and nothing will come out of this but it is so dumb! She shouldn't be making the decision on what people can and can't read! So many other books are worse than Hp but she has to choose this one because she will get attention. Of course that is why she is doing it! She wants attention and it is such a dumb way to get it!

I can understand where they are coming from. Banning these books, because as a 'religious' person myself, I get why they are against it. I have read all of the HP novels and have seen the Davinci Code. But really, if it is found offensive then people should just not read it. Its a personal decision. Its not like we are in the dark ages again.

wow, I really think people are taking this witchcraft thing way too serious if you ask me, the Harry Potter books are just fantasy books, I don't see what harm they are doing, its not like theres anyone out there claiming to be able to do magic or anything, I mean the Lord of the Rings series is about powerful wizards and other stuff too yet I never hear any complaints about them, why the Harry Potter books? This is just getting way out of hand

Some people are just crazy. And I don't mean that in a good way either. I mean, honestly, trying to ban books that are as wonderful and colorful as HP. Sometimes I understand, but they should not be banned. If you don't want kids to read them in school, do not talk about them in school but don't ban them. If you don't want them in your library, too bad! It's not your choice. Do you or don't you want people to come to your library? And as for all those "it's-against-the-religion nonsensers": Get a life. We don't care. Magic is against your religion? No, practicing it is and practicing devil-things is... But not magic itself. Because if magic was against your religion, then maybe you should never let your kids go to Disneyworld either. Because that's magic too. | |

Uh oh - that's where I live. It's actually happening a LOT to schools around here, and it might happen in mine, soon. I'm really glad they kept them in - I know so many kids who wouldn't read before the HP series got released, and now they'll give just about any book a chance.

How can you ban the very books that brought back the importance and joy of reading to so many people-adults and children alike?! Craziness, as a teacher myself, I believe that anything that gets kids to read-weather it's a cereal box, a sign, or a novel is well worth it's weight in gold and worth it to read! Just because she doesnt want her kid to read it doesnt mean that others should nt have that choice-that what freedom is, the ability to choose. I hope her effort continues to fail!

i hate ppl like that. ppl that try to keep poison out of children's minds. ppl that think that the tiniest thing is a perversion to their precious child's sanity. it's bull****. the more closed off you try to keep ur kid, the more ignorant they become. FACT. kids aren't stupid. most likely they won't read HP and try to "put a spell on some 1" so calm the f*** down! if you want to keep ur child away from the "evils" of HP, Judaism, and ppl of color then fine. remain slave to your ignorance forever. i'm sorry if i seem angry but every time i here crap like this it makes me ******. ppl really need to wake up and be serious. to even complain about a series that's loved all around the world is an embarassment to the complainer. its not like deaths have occured from magic so chill. if ur gonna complain about something, have it be something legitimate. that's all that needs to be said.

It is so incredibly rediculus that she is just basing it on the witchcraft of the books!!!! and in one school we played sports at we went to their library and read thru the window on book bannings: "Feirinheit 451 banned because it is against learning and promoting the distruction of books," "Harry Potter Series banned for promoting witchraft, violence in young children, and other evils." I mean COME ONN!!!!! evils? pathetic lil peeps that can't handle Harry Potter.
