heart Platonic Love in Books

Platonic Love in Books

Sometimes we just aren't in the mood to read about romance but that doesn't mean that we don't love love. There are different kinds of love, though, and this Valentine's we aren't focusing on roooooomance but, instead, we're going to celebrate platonic love! Platonic love is strong non-romantic love between people, for example best friends.

We want you to share your recommendations and discuss them with each other! Any interesting questions posed in your discussions will be added to the index below and your book recommendations will be added to the index in the second post. If you need some inspiration, there are already a couple of questions listed to get you thinking. As for recommendations, you can include ANY book that features platonic love, whether that's in the form of bromances, ride-or-die best friends, sisterhoods, or whatever other friendship-y and non-romantic love you can think of.

And at the end of the event, there's going to be an extra little surprise, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

SPOILER!!: Questions Index
  • What do you like about reading about platonic love versus romantic love?
  • Which book characters come to mind when you think of the phrase ride-or-die?
  • What book features the best bromance, in your opinion?

There are two sets of books which always gets me that warm, fuzzy feeling and those are the Animorphs Series & the Mortal Instruments Series. Both series has their own bromance:

1. Animorphs: Jake & Marco - childhood besties (the author really did say that the two knew each other since they were babies) who as teens, worked to save the human race from parasitic aliens along with a group of their other friends.

2. The Mortal Instruments - Alec and Jace: there are honestly no words to describe these two. Their love and dedication towards each other is simply...

These pairs always have their respective friend's back no matter what <3

The first book that comes to mind for me is Little Women... granted, the March girls are also sisters, which adds a degree of complexity to their relationships. But I love how they take care of each other and bolster each other through hard times.

Maybe I'm on a sibling kick, because I'm thinking about the Bennett sisters in Pride and Prejudice. I'm so soft for good sibling dynamics!

The first book that popped into my mind was also by Cassandra Clare, but it was the Infernal Devices trilogy for Jem and Will - probably because I just finished reading them.

One of my favourite book friendships of almost a decade now, is Ari and Janco from Maria V. Snyder's Chronicles of Ixia series (starts with Poison Study). They have a bond from their initial appearance, and it grows to encompass a few other characters - but no spoilers from me.

Third, I can never bypass friendships in books without thinking or mentioning Winnie the Pooh xD. I'm an adult I promise. There is just something so amazing about Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl etc and their adventures. Never pushing each other to be more or less than they are - just accepting and adventure-ing.

One book that I read which not just features, but focuses on platonic love is Far from the Tree by Robin Benway. It is about a teenaged girl who was adopted at birth and now tries to look for her biological siblings. There is so much non-romantic love in this book: within the adoptive/foster family, as well as within the newly discovered biological family. It gives all the warm fuzzy feelings! <3

ANIMORPHS! OMG Alicia, that was my childhood I loved those so much

But...my recommendation and one of the only books I took with me when I moved to Japan is The Secrets of Jin-Shei. Jin-shei itself is a pledge given by one woman to another, and once accepted can never be broken and there is even a secret language called jin-ashu that is passed down from one generation of women to another. It's a novel of the historical fantasy fiction variety and quite an emotional journey.

I don't know how many of the Shadowhunters books you've read, Tori, but honestly Jem and Will I don't want to say more in case you don't know what happened to Will, Jem and Tessa in the later years but just know that their friendship is mentioned in the subsequent books published. And trust me, your heart will be warmed each time. The Parabati bond at it's best

Cassandra Clare's books are built on friendship and love but I especially enjoy her friendships. Another pair that would warm and break your hearts is Ty Blackthorn and Kit Herondale.

Mine too! I've re-read the entire series twice in the last 7-8 years I recommend these books to everyone if you're looking for the best of the 1990s, friendship, love, saving the world heroics, aliens. This website has the entire series plus the companion books.

The great thing about platonic love in books is that it shows you what a friendship can and should be.

My favorite book series is the The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. Like LOTR, it explores the fellowship of a small group of companions as they travel and fight evil. Specifically the 4th book Taran Wanderer explores, among other things, the relationship between the series' main character Taran and his faithful companion Gurgi. Their journey together in this book shows how important a good and faithful friend can be when facing the unknown, disappointment, and eventually self-acceptance.

As Taran himself says in the book about their relationship:

These are both books I really want to get to this year! I've heard such great things about them from so many people. I mean, I suppose there's a reason they're classics. Lol.

I love warm fuzzy feelings. I think I will check this book out, it sounds lovely!

Oooooooh. This sounds really interesting! I think I might add this one to my to-read list.

As for my own recommendations, I will link to the Goodreads pages for them because I'm terrible at summarising things.

There's The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, which is heartbreaking yet somehow also heartwarming. If you haven't already read it, you definitely should. The friendship between Liesel and Max is everything, as is the bond between Liesel and her foster parents.

Next is Radio Silence by Alice Oseman. I love that romance isn't the main focus in this book, but rather than friendship between Frances and Aled, and has good representation.

SPOILER!!: break down of some characters
➽ Frances - Bisexual, biracial (Ethiopian and white), head girl at her high school, and an artist.
➽ Aled - Gay, demisexual, creator of a up-and-coming podcast and Youtube channel.
➽ Daniel - Gay, Korean immigrant, head boy at his high school.
➽ Carys - Lesbian, Aled’s twin sister who has been missing for a while now.
➽ Raine - Indian, selfless angel, who is pan!

Then there's Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, which I'm sure a lot of people are already familiar with.

I'm going to stick these last two suggestions together because they both involve groups of friends. There's Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs and W.I.T.C.H. Graphic Novels by Disney Company. The Miss Peregrine's series is full of adventure, friendship and super powers. What's not to love? W.I.T.C.H. is about a group of five girls - Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia and Hay Lin, who are the Guardians of the Veil and have to protect the world and, as a young teen, this franchise was EVERYTHING to me. E V E R Y T H I N G.
