Hannah: Thanks! I'm so glad you like it. And I love Loanna's name too. I found it by accident. XD

Quad #3: Yeah I know, I tend to do that. No cliffies on this chapter though.

Chapter 10

“My mother told me it was my fault for all the bad things that has happened in her life.” Loanna’s voice was emotionless as she finally admitted what was troubling her.

“She is thick-headed. It’s not your fault.” I argued. Another tear fell from those bottle green orbs.

“I told her she shouldn’t talk like that to her daughter.” Her face was expressionless, except for an occasional tear rolling off her cheek.

“What did she say?” I asked, afraid to hear the answer.

“She hates me.” More tears fell down from her sorrowful eyes.

“She doesn’t hate you Loanna, she is your mother.”

“No. She told me she hates me.” She whispered.

I didn’t know what to say. What did you say to that? Instead of trying to think of something to say that she probably wouldn’t hear anyways, I crawled over next to her and wrapped my arm around her. She laid her head on my shoulder and quietly cried in my arms. There wasn’t much for me to do, but to try and alleviate her troubles away. I ran my hand up her back soothingly as she let her dejection take over her. She barely made a sound as she cried.

If I didn’t know any better, I would have guessed she had fallen asleep, but then she sniffed. I looked down at her, and noticed she wasn’t even wearing a jacket. Goose bumps ran up her arms.

“Hold on.” I told her, and let go of her small frame. She lifted her head off my shoulder and watched as I stood up. Quickly grabbing the blanket from off my bed, I dropped back down to the floor and wrapped the blanket around her. She gave me a grateful smile, before biting her lip.

“What’s wrong?” I asked her.

“Is it ok if I sleep here tonight? I don’t want to go back home.” She said sheepishly.

“Of course. Stay here as long as you want.” I smiled at her. I then took one of the pillows from off my bed and handed it to her. She took it and laid it on the ground next to my bed.

After turning the lights off, I walked back to my bed and took off the other pillow and the sheet. I then laid down next to Loanna on the ground, facing her. “I’m sorry about your mom. I’m here for you though, ok?”

She nodded her head at me and another tear fell down. I moved closer to her, and wiped at the fallen tear.

“No more tears Lolo.” I whispered. She nodded her head again and squeezed her eyes shut painfully. It was like she was trying to force them to stop.

“Lo.” I set my hand on her cheek, trying to get her to open her eyes again. “Lolo.” Finally her eyes reopened and she gave me a heartrending look.

“I don’t hate you. No matter what happens in our lives, I will never hate you. Until I grow old and die, you will always be my friend.” I told her. She nodded again, a small smile gracing her lips.

Her eyes were so tired. She needed rest. “Lets get some sleep. You will feel better in the morning.” I said, pulling my hand from off her cheek. Curling up into my sheet I rolled over onto my back and began letting sleep over take me, when I heard her speak.

“Elliot?”

“Yeah?” I asked, turning my head to look at her.

She was no longer crying, and I could see that she would be unconscious as soon as she shut her eyes. “Thank you.”

“For what?” I asked.

“For being my friend.”

Chapter 11

The sound of my door opening woke me the next morning. I was still too groggy to comprehend that I was lying on the ground, and whoever opened my door wouldn’t be able to see me behind my bed. I rolled over onto my side, and saw that Loanna was still sound asleep. Behind her, I saw a pair of bare feet standing in the doorway. My eyes drifted closed again, drowsiness still in my system.

As sleep almost overtook me again, I heard the pair of feet run off, and distantly heard somebody say, “He’s not in his room.”

Another voice responded to the first voice. “What do you mean he isn’t in his room?”

“I dunno. He isn’t there.”

“I’ll find him mum.”

“I’m tellin’ ya. He isn’t there!” This time the voice was clear and I heard two pair of footsteps enter my room.

Then I remembered Loanna was here. She wasn’t supposed to be here. I was going to wake up earlier so I can make sure my family didn’t find her. This made my eyes flash open, just in time to see two pair of legs step in front of me.

“Oh wow. What is this we have here?” Aleksander said his eyebrow cocked up at me.

Otto came around the bed and he snapped his little fingers. “Dang! You found him.”

I quickly sat up, my eyes wide. “Don’t tell mum.”

Aleksander narrowed his eyes at me; he didn’t like being told what to do. His chocolate brown eyes were glued to my face as he yelled in a strident voice, “MUM!”

My eyes narrowed back at him. I was livid. Next to me Loanna jumped and she slowly sat up, her emerald green eyes growing fearful.

“What’s wrong? Did you find your brother?” My mother entered my room, drying her hands with a dishtowel.

Aleksander let a smirk fall onto his lips as he pointed a finger toward me on the ground. I’ve never used the word hate toward anybody before. But right now I don’t think there was any other feeling to describe how much I loathed my older brother.

A few seconds later my mother walked around my bed and I saw her shoulders drop. I could tell she was angry, but she wasn’t going to let it out in front of Loanna. That I respected her for.

“Milo!” she shouted for my father.

I sighed and looked over at Loanna. She looked scared and I wanted nothing more than to reach out and comfort her, but I knew it was a bad idea to even breathe right now. She caught me looking at her and she mouthed, “I’m sorry!” So slowly, I doubt the rest of my family saw I shook my head no. She shouldn’t have to be sorry. This was my fault.

“You called?” Everybody turned to look, as my father, and then Jacoby entered. Just a little scene we were making. What a way to start the day.

My mother tilted her head in an upset gesture and she sighed. “Can you take Elliot’s friend home for me?”

“What? When did she get here?” A confused expression lit up his hazel eyes.

“I’m guessing by the pillows and blankets on the ground she spent the night.” She replied, looking at me to see if she was correct, even though she already knew the answer. Looking down at my hands so I wouldn’t have to see the disappointed look on her face, I nodded.

My father waited as Loanna put her shoes on then offered his hand to her to help her from off the ground. She took it and gave me one last apologetic look before walking out of my room. I began to wonder when the next time I would be able to see her again, over the break. My chest was already starting to hurt just thinking about being stuck here without her company.

“Kitchen. Now.” My mother said and walked out.

“You’re so getting it now.” Aleksander snorted.

“Sod off.” I snarled, standing up from off the ground.

“Hey, this is your fault. Don’t take it out on me.” He replied.

“This wouldn’t have happened if you had kept your big mouth shut!”

“I don’t have a big mouth you little pansy!”

“Aleks quit it. Go talk to mum, Elliot.” Jacoby interrupted, and motioned for me to go.

I gave Aleksander one last fierce look, before storming out of my room. Little by little I made my way toward the kitchen, wondering how mad my mother was. Maybe she would let me off easily? What if I told her the truth about why Loanna stayed the night? No. I couldn’t spill Loanna’s secrets like that.

Nervously, I entered the kitchen and saw my mom stirring a bowl of pancake mix. When she saw me walk up, she pointed with her head toward the table. “Sit.” I did as I was told and let my chin fall onto my chest.

“What were you two thinking?” My mother asked in front of me. When I didn’t say anything right away, she grew irritated. “Elliot Dion Edwards. Don’t tune me out.”

“I’m not tuning you out.” I mumbled.

“This is very serious Elliot. Do you know how worried her mother must have been?” I scoffed on the inside. Her mother didn’t care about her.

“I’m sorry if I upset you.” I said.

“Yes you have upset me. You know better than this. Plus she is a young lady. Young ladies shouldn’t be, erm, sleeping over at little boy’s houses.” I blushed at her awkward words and looked up from my hands in my lap.

“She’s my friend mum. She isn’t my girlfriend.” My neck was burning with embarrassment. This was not something I wanted to talk to my mother about. But of course this had to be the time when everybody else walked into the kitchen.

“Yeah right! They are always together at school. They will be reciting their vows any day now.” Aleksander snorted sitting down across from me at the table.

“Hush Aleks.” My mother responded, as Jacoby took the bowl of pancake mix from her. He took over the cooking as the heat reached my ears.

“I don’t see the big deal with her spending the night. We weren’t doing anything bad.” I said quietly.

“This is a big deal. Sneaking around is not something I tolerate in this house. Even if you were still under my roof, you had somebody come into our home. That is a big deal Elliot. Nobody should be coming into this house without your father’s or my knowledge. Ever. Do you understand me?” Her chocolate brown eyes narrowed into slits, and I felt like crying.

“Yes. I understand.”

“This won’t happen again. You won’t let anybody else into this house without our consent, will you?”

“No. I won’t.” I focused on the table. If I looked at anybody now, I would break down.

“Good.” She said. “And I have to do this Elliot, but you can’t see that little girl for the rest of the week.”

My head flew back up and my ice blue eyes focused on her face. “What! No! I don’t agree to this!” I shouted. No. I can’t do that. Loanna was the only person who kept me sane. She was the only person who understood me. She was the only person who was there for me. I couldn’t not see her for a whole week. I would go absolutely crazy.

“You will do as I say. I could easily make your punishment two weeks.” My mother said, as the front door was heard being opened. Three seconds later my father walked in with a somber look on his face. I needed him to help me. My mother was being irrational!

“Dad. I’m sorry for lying to you guys, but please don’t prohibit me from seeing Loanna!” I said, standing up from my chair hastily.

My father looked confused for a second before making eye contact with my mother. “Is this what your mother said?”

“Yes. Please Dad.” I begged him. Angry tears brimmed underneath my eyes, and I waited on edge for what he would say.

“Well if that is what your mother says, goes. Be glad she didn’t say two weeks.” He said, his hazel eyes set.

I groaned loudly and staggered feverishly from the kitchen. Walking back into my room, I made sure to slam the door as hard as I could, before collapsing on my bed, letting the seething tears fall.

Chapter 12

The next day I wasn’t in the mood to talk to anybody. I was still angry, and I knew I couldn’t face anybody without exploding. So I stayed in my room through most of the day. I didn’t even go out to eat breakfast, or lunch. My stomach was aching for food, but I ignored it.

I wanted to write a letter to Loanna, but that would mean walking out of my room. Then again, I don’t think I would be allowed to write anybody. I hoped she didn’t get into too much trouble. I should have woken up earlier so I could get her out on time. If it weren’t for Aleksander’s sadistic ways, none of this would have ever happened. The more I thought about him, the angrier I would get. I tried not to think about him and focus on something else.

Around seven that night, I got a knock on my door. I didn’t say anything as it slowly opened. Jacoby peaked around and gave me a tentative smile.

“Do you want something to eat?” he asked.

“No.” I replied stubbornly. I wasn’t going out there.

“Come on. Nobody is in the kitchen. I’ll heat you up something to eat.” He coaxed.

“I don’t want to go out there.” I said. Didn’t he get it? I didn’t want to see anybody.

“Fruit salad? Extra apples?”

I hated how well Jacoby knew me. I bit the side of my lip in thought, should I risk going out there?

“Is anybody in the kitchen?” I asked quietly.

“No. Come on.” This time I got off my bed and followed my brother out of the room. I saw the light on in my parents room, and I heard talking coming from Aleksander and Otto’s room. I took a calming breath and entered the living room as Jacoby walked into the kitchen.

“If you cut the apples I’ll cut the watermelon for you.” He said to me.

“Are there any strawberries?” I asked.

“I was going to make a strawberry shortcake, but you can have some.” He smiled.

“I don’t have to have any.” I said, feeling guilty for eating his strawberries.

“No. It’s fine.” He chuckled, handing me two apples to cut up. I took a knife out from the drawer and began cutting one of the apples into a bowl. Jacoby pulled out half a watermelon, and set it on the counter. He also took out a knife, slightly bigger than mine, and began cutting up the watermelon.

We both looked toward the living room at the sound of a sharp knock. I turned to Jacoby to see if he knew who it was. He just shrugged and walked into the living room. Slowly, I followed him and watched as Aleksander opened the front door.

“Uncle Matt!” Aleksander said happily, embracing the man standing in the doorway.

The man looked almost exactly like my father. He had the same mahogany colored hair and the same cheekbones. They also shared their hazel colored eyes. What made them different though was their height. Uncle Matthaios was almost a foot taller. We rarely saw our uncle. I didn’t know much about him. He was very mysterious. I didn’t even know where he worked or where he lived. The only time we saw him was when he visited us.

“Mum! Uncle Matt is here!” Aleksander called, letting him inside.

“Uncle Matt!” Otto yelled excitedly from the hallway, and came shooting out like a racehorse.

Uncle Matthaios chuckled and caught the boy as he launched himself at him. He lifted Otto into the air and my brother began to squeal with laughter. “I’ve missed you Boy.” He laughed, before throwing him down lightly onto the couch. Otto laughed again as he landed on the soft cushion.

“Matt?” My mother walked into the living room, a reserved expression on her face.

“Hey Brown Eyes. How’ve you been?” Uncle Matthaios turned to her.

“I’m fine. What are you doing here?” she asked, giving him a quick hug.

“Well, is Milo here?” he asked running his hand through his hair roughly.

“He should be home any minute. Is everything ok?”

It was weird how after every sentence my mother ended it with a question. I was beginning to notice the look on her face too. She had a calm look on the surface, but I could tell she was hiding an anxious gaze.

“It could be better.” He shrugged.

My mother took a breath before saying, “Otto. Go to your room.”

“But Ma!” Otto groaned.

“Now Otto.” She said sternly.

Otto scowled as he walked out of the room. A door shutting showed that he did as he was told.

“They haven’t found us have they?” My mother asked, crossing her arms over her chest protectively. What did that mean? Who was she talking about?

“I’m not sure.” He replied, as the front door opened again.
“Matthaios?” my father said, looking slightly confused.

“Hello little brother.” Uncle Matthaios grinned lazily.

“This isn’t going to be an exchange of presents visit, is it?”

“Is it ever?” he gave a half-hearted chuckle.

My father gave him a light smile, before motioning him to the armchair. Uncle Matthaios sat down on the edge of the chair, his elbows resting on his knees. My mother sank down onto the couch with my father at her side.

“Kids, why don’t you go do something.” My mother frowned.

“We don’t have to move again do we?” Jacoby asked looking put out.

“We need to talk. Go.” My father said.

We didn’t need telling twice, and we scattered into the kitchen. We all tried to get the best part of the wall to listen through, as the grown ups began to talk.

Chapter 13

“Scoot over.” Aleksander grunted, pushing me to the side.

“You move over. I was here first.” I growled.

“Quiet. Listen.” Jacoby whispered. We both grew quiet and listened to the conversation in the other room.

“She was being very cryptic when I last talked to her, but I do know she is recruiting somebody. I don’t know who, but I recommend you two watch who you get close to.” I heard Uncle Matthaios say.

“Do you know if it is somebody in this neighborhood or at work?” My father asked.

“I don’t know anything. It could be a family member for all I know.”

“Don’t say that Matt.” My mother said firmly.

“Sorry Brown Eyes. I’m just putting all the possibilities on the table.” Uncle Matthaios said, giving her an apologetic look.

“Well accusing my family is not something to put on the table.” My mother said defensively.

“Samantha.” My father said softly.

It was quiet in the living room for a minute or two. I wondered what they were thinking. I also wanted to know what they were talking about. It was all very puzzling the way they were talking.

“Do you think it’s safe to stay here?” I could tell by her voice, that my mother valued his opinion.

“For now I think you are fine. I’ll keep an ear out for you guys though.”

“Thank you Matthaios.”

The sound of people moving came from the living room and I knew Uncle Matthaios would hug both my parents before making his departure. I turned to look at both my brothers and I saw they looked as confused as I felt.

“What did mum mean about it being safe here?” Jacoby asked.

“I don’t know. I haven’t heard her sound so worried since the last time we moved.” Aleksander replied.

“Do you think it’s connected?”

“I don’t know. Mum has always been a worried wart though. She is probably just being paranoid.” Aleksander shrugged.

“You’re ridiculous.” I said, glaring at him.

“Who asked you?” Aleksander retorted.

“Something bad might be happening and you just think mum is being paranoid.” I said crossly.

“Nothing bad is going to happen. Who would do something bad to us? Get real Eli Belly!”

“Don’t call me that!” I growled.

“Then quit acting dumb! Nothing bad is going to happen.” He narrowed his eyes at me, before leaving the kitchen.

I let out a frustrated growl before slumping into a chair near the table. He was so ignorant it was nauseating. How could he not see the danger that might be coming? Did he want to be brainless or was he doing it on purpose?

“Here’s your bowl.” Jacoby said quietly, placing it in front of me.

“Thank you.” I said, calming down slightly. At least one of my brothers wasn’t a complete idiot.

As I ate I began to wonder what Jacoby had met about moving. So I asked him. “What did you mean before. About moving again?”

Jacoby was silent for a moment, his attention focused on cutting a piece of watermelon for himself. “I don’t want to say anything to make your worry.” He said, giving me a skeptical look.

“You think I’m right don’t you? You think something bad might happen.” I said.

“No. I think Mum and Dad have it under control. But whenever Mum gets that worried look on her face when Matthaios visits, we end up moving.”

I thought about it for a moment. I’ve never really noticed that before. But as I began to think back, Matthaios always came to visit right before we moved. I hoped that wasn’t the case this time though. I couldn’t imagine moving around Loanna. We couldn’t move.

Chapter 14

It’s been four whole days since I had last seen Loanna. No letters have come from her. It was like she had fallen off the face of the earth. I was going out of my mind with worry. What if her mom made her go live with her dad? What if the reason Loanna hasn’t tried to contact me, was because she was hurt? Would her mom do something to her? What is going on over there?

I needed to see her. I needed to know she was ok. I needed to know she wasn’t mad at me for getting her in trouble. My mind was set. I was going to sneak out to see her. Nobody has checked in on me all day, so I should be ok with leaving for a few minutes.

Throwing on some clean clothes and putting my shoes on, I looked at my closed door for a moment. When nobody walked through, it gave me the green light to go. I slid open my window and jumped up onto the sill. Throwing my legs over the side, I pushed off and fell onto all fours on the ground, making more noise than I wanted. I stayed motionless on the ground, listening for any sounds of movement in response to somebody hearing me. Nobody came. Smiling triumphantly, I walked through the next backyard, using the trees to shield me. Three backyards later, I was standing underneath Loanna’s bedroom window. Taking a quick peak inside, I spotted her lying on her bed, her back facing me. Seeing that she was alone, I quietly tapped on the window to get her attention.

I watched as she rolled over, her lips turned down into a frown. She looked completely miserable. But when her bottle green eyes made contact with mine, they widened. She quickly jumped from off her bed and let me into her room.

“Elliot! What are you doing here? Was your mom mad? I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have stayed. I just…I didn’t want to come home. I was being selfish. I’m sor-”

“Lolo. It’s fine. Really.” I chuckled. Her lip started to tremble and she looked away from me. She was as happy to see me, as I was to see her. This made me smile.

“What about you? How did your mom react?” I asked quietly.

“She was livid. She even threatened sending me off to my father. I have a feeling she didn’t even know I was gone until your dad knocked on the door.” Loanna bit her lip.

“I’m sorry Lo.” I said sympathetically. She shrugged it off and looked back at me.

“Not your fault.” She smiled.

We spent the next hour or two catching up and just being in each other’s presence. I had forgotten how to be happy these past four days. It was like my soul was singing when I was around her. I don’t know what I would do without Loanna. She seemed to feel the same way about me. We kept each other alive.

“Loanna!” we both jumped as steady footsteps came toward her room. Her eyes grew wide, and I did the first thing I could think of. I jumped underneath her bed, just as the door flew open.

“I told you to clean those dishes an hour ago! What’s wrong with you? Whatever it is, you better get over it soon. I am getting tired of your bull. You are acting like a little princess. It needs to stop now.” Her mother practically screamed at her.

I cringed into the carpet. I knew what happened at Loanna’s house, but I’ve never seen it up close. It saddened me that she wasn’t exaggerating about her mother.

“I’ll do them in a second.” Loanna’s soft voice was right above me. I could see her ankles right in front of me.

“No. You will do them now!” her mother yelled. When Loanna didn’t move, her mother screamed, “GO!”

This got her moving, and they both walked out of her room. My heart was still beating rapidly, as I crawled out from underneath her bed. I quickly jumped onto her windowsill, and pushed off onto the ground. I felt a stinging pain go across my arm, and I found that I had cut myself on the ledge. Letting out an angry breath of air, I hurriedly made my way back to my house.

When I made it to my window, I peaked in before climbing up. My eyes closed painfully as I found somebody sitting on my bed, watching me with disappointed eyes.

Cause I felt mean leaving it that way, more.

Chapter 15

“Where were you Elliot?” Jacoby asked me. I had to admit, it could have been a lot worse if somebody else had found me.

“I just got some fresh air.” I lied.

“For almost two hours?” Jacoby gave me a solemn look. I felt guilty lying to him. He was always the one who looked out for me. He wouldn’t get mad if I told him the truth. Would he?

Sighing, I replied, “I went to go see Loanna.”

“Even though you aren’t supposed to?”

“Yes.”

My brother frowned at me and stood up from my bed. “Otto was the one to find that you were missing.”

My eyes grew wide and I quickly asked, “Does anybody else know?”

“No. He told me and I told him to tell me if somebody else were to come near here. Why would you go over there when you know you aren’t supposed to?” Jacoby asked me desolately.

“I wanted to talk to her. I wanted to tell her I was sorry.” I mumbled, looking down at my shoes.

“What if it were mum instead of me? You would really be in trouble then.” A sympathetic look took up his face. He was actually worried about me. Guilt began to seep through my veins.

“I know. Thank you.” I said, looking back up at him. He gave me a somber smile before turning his head sharply toward the door. My eyes locked on the door also.

“But he’s asleep Aleks!” a small voice said from behind the door.

“Well then we can wake him up.”

We both watched as my door opened and Aleksander and Otto entered. Otto looked relieved to see that I was there and I gave him a grateful smile. As one, the three of us turned to look at Aleksander. He had his head tilted and his mahogany colored hair was falling in front of his calculating eyes.

“I thought he was asleep.” Aleksander said to the youngest brother. Otto shrugged and flopped down onto my bed, crossing his legs Indian style.

I watched as Aleksander drank in my appearance and I began to wish I had kicked off my shoes. “Why are you all dressed?” he asked.

I shrugged and looked away from him. He wasn’t going to get me in trouble this time. No he wasn’t.

“Why is your arm bleeding?” Aleksander asked, walking toward me. I stepped back from him and tried to hide my arm. The cut was deeper than I had thought.

Looking back up at my oldest brother, I watched as his eyes flew to the open window, then back to me, the pieces falling together. “You left didn’t you? That’s why you are all dressed with your shoes on and your window is open. You went to go see your little girlfriend huh? Oh man mom is going to be so mad!” he grinned.

My eyes narrowed into slits and if I had my wand I would have cursed him. I was tired of playing my brother’s games. I was tired of him getting me in trouble. I was tired of him being a creep toward me. I was done. I wasn’t going to deal with this anymore.

“You’re an arrogant jerk and I wish you weren’t my brother.” I said through gritted teeth. My face was burning with anger and I could feel my blood boiling.

“That’s no way to talk. You would think you wouldn’t want me to tell mum. That’s not going to stop me from telling her.” Aleksander chortled.

“Aleks.” Jacoby said in a warning voice.

“No. You can’t protect him now Jake. He deserves whatever he gets.” He retorted his eyes glued onto me.

“At least he isn’t a clueless idiot.” I said, my ice blue eyes focused on his chocolate ones.

This got him mad and he folded his arms over his chest defensively. “Watch it little bro.”

“I’m not your bro!” I shouted and angry red sparks shot out from me toward Aleksander. He ducked and the sparks bounced off my door. Otto’s little body jumped and almost fell from off the bed. This distracted Jacoby and I was able to grab my wand and my flute from off my dresser.

Deciding it was time to leave, I rushed from out of my room and down the hall. My parent’s room flew open and my mom came out. “Elliot? What was that noise?”

I completely ignored her and pushed my way past her. My head was pounding I was so furious. My own brother was against me. Why should I have to stay in a place where I was the enemy? I rushed into the kitchen and out the backdoor. Swiftly, I brought the flute to my lips shakily and began to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Almost immediately, I heard a light pop to my right, and Melody gave me a bright smile.

She gave me a quick look over, and a frown graced her lips. “Elliot, what’s wrong?”

“Can you take me away from here?” I pleaded with her.

“Sure.” Her honey eyes flashed. She offered me her hand as the backdoor opened again.

“Elliot!”

I turned my head and locked eyes with my mother’s. Her chocolate brown eyes resembled Aleksander’s so much. It enlightened the flame in my chest. Unlike Aleksander’s though, her eyes were full of fear. Fear of me leaving no doubt. She should have seen this coming. She shouldn’t have tried to keep me away from Loanna. She shouldn’t have taken Aleksander’s side.

Without looking away from my mother, I took Melody’s hand. A smile fell onto my lips as I felt the pull around my navel. Then her chocolate brown eyes were gone.

I totally agree! That's what happens when you don't let children explain their behaviour! I wonder where they are going? Are they going to get Lolo? Brilliant chapters again my lovely! More please!

Chapter 16

It was dark when we arrived in a dimly lit living room. It took my eyes a second to adjust to the darkness. I couldn’t believe I ran away from home. I no longer had to watch my every step around my family. I can be myself. Instead of exciting me like it should, I began to feel shaky. This was all too overwhelming. I needed time to think about what I just did.

“Do you want to talk about it Elliot? Or do you want a tour of the house? I can get somebody to make some food if you are hungry.” Melody said in motherly way.

“No thank you. Is it ok, if I were alone for a little while?” I asked in a small voice.

“Sure. Come on. I’ll take you to your room.” She said and directed me down the hall. The second door down, she opened and let me enter. “If you need anything just call for me.”

“Thank you Melody.” I said. She smiled at me exuberantly before shutting the door behind her.

Naturally, I would have explored my new room, but I was too disheartened to even move. I sank down to the ground, bringing my legs to my chest, and began rocking on the balls of my feet. What had I done? Was this the right thing to do? Of course, Aleksander was probably thrilled I was gone. No more sissy brother to deal with. I knew my mother would be upset in the beginning, but she had three other sons in her life. She would forget about me soon. This was for the best. I can start my life over again and be happy for once. I recall Melody saying something about having a piano and a harp. Maybe she would let me play them. This was for the best.

It was settled. I was never going to see my family again. Never again will I have to deal with my parents’ cryptic rules. No more taunting from Aleksander. The last time I’ll feel guilty around perfect Jacoby. The last time I will I ever have to see Otto be spoiled by the rest of my family. I was done. My anger was beginning to boil over again and I took a breath to calm down.

This was all for the best. I kept repeating this in my head until I started to believe it. Slowly, I stood up from the ground and looked around the room. The lighting was dim and I could see the sun had gone down. I walked over to the night table sitting next to an extravagant looking bed and lit a candle. The room I was standing in was medium sized and a lot bigger than my room back home. The carpet was ghost white with the walls painted an emerald green. The bed would have taken up half of my old room it was that big. Silver bed covers enclosed over the bed, with matching pillows. The only window in the room was covered with green window covers, but I had no desire to look outside.

The room suited me. I liked the colors, and it had plenty of room for me to go about my business. Climbing into the massive bed, I found how soft the covers were. Bouncing lightly up and down, I realized how comfortable the bed was too. Slipping my shoes off, I climbed underneath the covers and laid my head down on the pillow. This was my life now. At least I was going to be comfortable. I would have to thank Melody again in the morning.

I soon fell into a restless sleep, waking up several times through the night. I kept on dreaming of my mother’s face, which would form into Aleksander’s smirk. A couple of times I woke with a cold sweat on my forehead. Maybe I should go ask Melody for a Calming Draught. No, I didn’t want to disturb her. Soon I fell asleep again. This time I slept for the rest of the night.

The next morning, I woke to somebody knocking loudly on my door. I sat up, as Melody walked inside, a beaming smile on her face.

“Good morning sweet child. Are you hungry?” she asked in her high-pitched voice.

I didn’t reply to her, but slipped out of the bed and looked up at her, sleep still coating my ice blue eyes. She smiled down at me, and led me away from the room. Even though the sun was shinning down on the house, it was really dark inside. We walked by the aid of candles through the hallway, until we made it into an extravagant looking kitchen. It was painted in chic colors with dark marble counter tops. An island sat in the middle of the room, with three mahogany stools set next to it. The tile was very sleek and shiny, making me anxious I was going to slip.

“What would you like to eat? You can have anything you would like.” Melody said, walking over to the stainless steel refrigerator.

“Can I have some porridge please?” I asked in a small voice.

“Porridge? You can have anything in the world and your request is porridge?” She asked with a small chuckle. I didn’t know what to say. Porridge was quick to make and quick to eat. It was habit to eat hastily and leave the table, even at home. But I didn’t have to worry about eating quickly today.

“Can I have some pancakes?” I have never really tried them before, but people seemed to like them.

Taking a seat on one of the mahogany stools, I watched as Melody made me my pancakes. She even got creative and placed blueberries inside them, and set whipped cream on top, with strawberries on the side. The plate of food was appealing to the eyes, and the fact that Melody went out of her way to make them look nice made my heart swell.

“Thank you.” I said as she set the plate in front of me. She giggled in response and walked out in what I suspected was the living room.

Picking up the fork and taking a bite of the pancake, I quickly spat it out. They certainly weren’t as delicious as I thought they would be. Then again, I’ve never really liked blueberries. But she went through the trouble of making them for me. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings by saying I didn’t like them. Quietly getting up from the stool, I walked around the island and looked for the trash can. Spotting one underneath the sink, I quickly scraped the pancakes into the trash. I had grabbed the strawberries before they fell too, and ate those for my breakfast. When I was finished, I washed my hands and the plate the pancakes had been on. Then I made my way into the living room to find Melody sitting on the couch scowling at somebody sitting in a black leather reclining chair. The man was reading the newspaper, seeming to ignore Melody. He didn’t even jump as Melody squealed at the sight of me.

“Come inside Elliot. I would like for you to meet my husband. Thomas. Thomas, this is Elliot, the boy I’ve been telling you about.” She had risen from her seat on the couch to stand next to me, setting a hand on my shoulder.

The man set down the paper and I looked into a pair of ice blue eyes. They were familiar. They almost resembled my own, but I didn’t get to play with the questions in my head before the front door opened and somebody I never suspected would enter this house, walked in nonchalantly. Like he was meant to be here. I watched as my uncle Matthaios shut the door, and the world behind him. Was he here to take me back to my mother and father?

Chapter 17

“Matthaios! You’re home. Look who has joined us.” Melody said with a cheery face.

“I see. Where did you find him?” Matthaios replied. What was he doing? Didn’t he recognize me? Wasn’t he going to take me back home? Wasn’t he going to fight with Melody and Thomas? Why were they acting as if they see each other every day?

“This is Milo and Samantha’s child. They neglected him so he has come to live with us.” Melody replied, sitting back down onto the couch. I fidgeted from one foot to the other nervously.

“When did he arrive?” Matthaios asked casually.

“Last night. Were you able to fulfill your orders?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Would you like some breakfast?”

“I’m fine. Has Elliot eaten yet?” Matthaios asked, looking straight at me. I couldn’t read on his face what he was thinking. It was like he was wearing a mask. I’ve never seen him like this before. It frightened me.

“Yes he has. I was actually going to show him the piano as soon as he was finished. He is a musician you know.” Melody said, starting to get back up on her feet.

“Sit. I’ll show him. I was just about to go in there myself.” Matthaios said. He then gave her a light smile and motioned for me to follow him out of the living room. I reluctantly trailed after him.

As soon as we were out of sight, Matthaios grabbed me by my upper arm and increased his pace. I struggled to keep up with him as he practically dragged me through the hallway. He abruptly stopped in front of a door and I tripped. He still had a firm grip on my arm however, so he swiftly pulled me back to my feet. As soon as we were inside, he let go and shut the door quickly.

Inside the room was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. A plain white grand piano sat in the center of the room. The paint was gloriously shiny and I held my breath in anticipation. I’ve always wanted to play the piano, but to play on this exquisite object was beyond my dreams. In the corner a golden harp sat angelically. I was in pure heaven.

Matthaios however brought me back to reality, as he pushed me toward the piano. I looked up at him agitatedly and I received a glare. “Sit.” He ordered. I didn’t need telling twice. The look on his face was all I needed to get me moving.

I sat down onto the white marble stool and let my fingers delicately touch the white ivory. The simplest touch was making shivers go up and down my back. I was brought out of my daze as Matthaios sat down next to me. He directed my fingers to two notes and looked directly at me. “Middle C, Middle E. Play them repetitively until I stay stop.”

I did as I was told. Low notes filled the room and I sighed with pleasure. Finally, I was playing the piano. With elegant fingers, Matthaios began to play a lovely tune, with me playing back up. It was a lot for me to take in and I couldn’t think of a time when I was happier. Then Matthaios began to speak.

“What are you doing here Elliot. Did they kidnap you?” he asked in a voice a little higher than a whisper.

“No. I came willing.” I admitted.

“Why?” He sounded angry.

“I couldn’t handle living at home anymore. They all treated me like something underneath their shoe.” I replied, my face beginning to warm up from my anger.

“That’s not true.” Matthaios said forcibly. I stopped playing and tried to wipe the fear off my face. “Keep playing.”

I continued playing the two notes into the room as Matthaios went on with his song, and lecture. “Your parents are two of the most understanding, respectable and thoughtful people I’ve ever met. Never speak ill of them in front of me.” He ordered.

Agreeing to his wishes, I began to wonder. If he cared for my parents so much what was he doing here? Why wasn’t he with them?

“Elliot do you know who these people are?” Matthaios asked more gently.

“Melody and Thomas are nice to me. I don’t want you speaking ill of them.

Matthaios stopped playing at my words and placed two fingers on the bridge of his nose, aggravated. I quit playing also, feeling uncomfortable sitting next to my uncle. He seemed like he was trying to stop himself from blowing up at me. The room grew eerie quiet and the tension was so thick I felt like choking. “Those are not their real names. And they are not the people they say they are.”

“What do you mean? They are nice people.”

Matthaios began playing again before replying. “Those two people out there are dark wizards. They are the reason why you moved a lot as a child. The reason why your father is rarely home, and the reason why your mother is sometimes on edge for no apparent reason. They want to kill them Elliot. You call that nice?”

“What are you talking about? Melody and Thomas don’t even know my parents.”

“Yes they do. They know your father more than your own mother.”

“But my mother tells him everything. You don’t know what you are talking about!” I could feel the angry tears threatening to spill over. This was all wrong. I was supposed to be happy here. Matthaios was trying to ruin this for me.

Matthaios smoothly transitioned into a faster paced song, heightening the noise level and probably making it harder for anybody outside the room to hear the conversation. He let me take in a few shaky breaths before saying anything again. “Has Melody told you about any kids she had?”

“No.” I replied.

“She had three. Would you like to hear their names?” he asked me softly.

“Does it matter?” I asked irritably.

“Very much so.”

“Fine. What are they?”

“Kali, Matthaios and Milo, your father.”

Chapter 18

It had been three days since I had had that conversation with Matthaios. I was still a little shaken up about it. Melody and Thomas, or more commonly known as Melania and Thanos, or my grandparents, were highly wanted death eaters. I couldn’t imagine that it was true. Thanos was very intimidating, but I couldn’t see him killing anybody, and Melody was too good to bring harm on anybody. Maybe Matthaios had been lying, jealous that I was getting all the attention from Melody. But I waved that thought away quickly. Nobody is that creative when it comes to lying. In the end I had still refused help from Matthaios. I didn’t want to leave. I liked it here. And they weren’t bad. I refused to believe they were anything but good people.

I did believe however that they were my grandparents. My eyes resembled Thanos’ ice blue ones almost exactly. In fact, I had no doubt in my mind that I had inherited my own blue eyes from him. Melody on the other hand, I recognized my father’s eyes. They both had that swirly honey color that no two other people had. I saw other resemblances in features with my family and even Matthaios. Thanos and Matthaios both had the same nose, and he got his dimples from Melody. I still couldn’t figure out how I didn’t notice until Matthaios pointed it out.

Turning my head as I heard a knock on my door, I looked up and found Melody smiling down at me. “Dinner is ready if you are hungry.” She said sweetly.

“Thank you.” I replied and stood up from my spot on the bed.

I followed her out of my room, and into the kitchen. Thanos was already sitting at the table, taking a big bite of his steak. He didn’t look up when I walked in; he was just staring off into space. It was like he didn’t even realize I walked into the room. I sat down a little away from him and gave Melody a grateful smile as she set my plate down in front of me. I couldn’t help but notice that Matthaios was missing. He must be planning something.

Just as I was finishing my meal, I heard a crack come from the living room. I looked up at Melody, who had a confused look on her face. Without looking at me, she and Thanos abruptly flew out of the kitchen. I wasn’t sure if I should follow or not, but I was curious. Slowly, I made my way to the edge of the kitchen and looked into the living room. It was dark, but I could make out Melody and Thanos. Their backs were to me and in front of them were two shadows. I couldn’t see who the two shadows were.

“What is he doing here?” Melody hissed.

“He asked to be brought here. He wants to form a compromise if you will listen.” I heard Matthaios respond.

“There is nothing to compromise.” Thanos’ deep voice brought chills to my skin.

“Can I just talk to him then? Please?” That voice. I knew that voice.

“I don’t th-”

“Only if he wants to talk to you.” Melody cut Thanos off. “Elliot. Come here please.”

Tentatively I walked into the living room, just as Matthaios turned on the light. I stopped next to Melody facing the person who has giving me hell since the moment I was born. My eyes automatically began to darken and memories from when we last saw each other flooded my mind. I still wanted to curse him into oblivion, and it has almost been a week.

“Elliot.” Aleksander said softly.

“What do you want?” I said, trying to control my anger.

“I’m sorry. Sorry for everything. Sorry for making you so miserable that you felt you had to come here. Sorry for not being there for you. Sorry for being a jerk. I’m so sorry, Elliot. I wish you would come home.” I just stared at him. I thought he was here to force me back home or grow angry with me for leaving. The last thing I expected from him was an apology. I began searching his face frantically to see if he was lying, just to get me to feel bad. Nothing. I’ve never seen Aleksander look so genuine before. He looked exhausted and worried. It was puzzling me. What were his intentions being here?

“Why?” I asked.

“You are my brother. I would never want this for you.”

“What do you mean want this?” My eyes darkened again.

“Do you know who they are? They-”

“That’s quite enough! If that is all you have to say Aleks, I think it is time for Matthaios to take you home.” Melody interrupted.

“Wait! Just listen to my compromise.” Aleksander said. His chocolate brown eyes had something in them that I didn’t recognize. He almost looked vulnerable. It was something I have never experienced before in my thirteen years of life.

“You have five minutes.” Melody crossed her arms over her chest. I could tell she was not happy. It was different to see her this way.

“I want to issue a trade. I’ll come willing, if you let Elliot go.” Aleksander said.

“I don’t want to go!” I shouted. Didn’t Aleksander understand? This was my home now.

Melody chuckled and set her hand on my shoulder, as Aleksander turned to look at me sadly. “Elliot…you…Mom needs you. She hasn’t stopped crying since you have left. Dad hasn’t said one word. Otto has stopped running; he hasn’t smiled since you ran out of the room. Jake won’t even look at me…It’s like somebody died. The house is so vacant without you. But most of all…I miss you.”

I stared long and hard at him, and felt my hands begin to tremble. It couldn’t be true. Aleksander miss me? The guy hated me. “You just don’t have anybody to pick on anymore. That’s why you miss me.” I replied, trying to hold back the tears that were brimming at the edge of my eyes.

Aleksander actually smiled at my words. “Elliot do you know why I pick on you?”

“Because you are a callous jerk.” I mumbled, but curiosity kept me rooted to my spot.

“That’s true I guess, but mainly it’s because out of the three, you are my favorite brother. Otto is too innocent sometimes, and Jake ignores me. But you, you always fight back. I know that is a childish way to show that I like you, but it’s me. When have I ever not been childish?” He chuckled. I gave him a soft smile. “If I would’ve known it hurt you this bad, I would have laid off, but you were always strong. Though, that doesn’t give me the right to be a callous jerk. Sorry.”

All I could do was stare at him. Was this really happening? Did Aleksander just say I was his favorite? I always though Otto was the favorite. He always treated Otto so compassionately, but as I thought about it, he was never happy unless he was joking around. And he was always joking around with me.

Before I could make up my mind about anything, Melody stepped in front of me and looked me straight in the eye. In a low tone, she said, “Elliot this is the boy who ruined your life. Don’t believe anything he says. They are all lies to get you to back to your absent father and ignoring mother.”

“Time is up. Take him back, Matthaios.” Thanos said. I moved my head around Melody, to see Matthaios and Aleksander disappear.

Chapter 19

I couldn’t sleep that night. How could I sleep ever after that? Lying in my bed as the sun began to rise, I wondered what my family was doing right now. On a normal day, I would find my brother in the kitchen, with my mother helping him. Usually it is the son that helps the mother in the kitchen, but not my family. My mother was never really much of a cook. Otto would surely be running around somewhere, a smile plastered on his cheeks. He loved the morning. Something about the sun rising for a new day made the boy happy. My father was usually always home in the morning, before he left for work. So I would most likely find him napping on the couch. Not in his bed, but on the couch, with a book draped over his stomach. Aleksander would be the only person still asleep. But as soon as the clock hit 10:13, he would be up like a switch was flicked in his head. Hyper no doubt.

The more I began to think, the more I began to wonder what day it was. I wonder if Uncle Benny and Aunt Mona were there yet. Everybody loved Uncle Benny, and since Uncle Benny loved Mona, everybody loved her too. It was just something about the man that made you love him. A long scar reached over his left eyebrow that disappeared in his hairline, but everybody ignored it. All I knew about the scar was that it came from an accident he was in when he was around Aleksander’s age. I could tell it hurt my mother when she thought about, so I never questioned it further, even though I was curious. Aunt Mona was the sweetest woman I probably ever met. She had brown curly hair with golden high lights, and butternut scotch eyes. She also had this beautiful white smile. Her teeth were perfect.

They both had two kids, Kasey who was nineteen, and Julia was sixteen. I sometimes wished I were brother to them when I was younger. Kasey, who can sometimes be competitive, especially when it came to baseball, was laid back most of the time. My mother told me he was just like Uncle Benny when he was young. He never fought with Julia, who was always very serene. She always had a dreamy smile on her face and never said a bad thing about anybody. They were almost the complete opposite of my family. In my house it was always loud and chaotic with people running from room to room. It didn’t seem like it would be like that in their house.

They always came over for the Christmas holidays. Then we would all travel to my grandparent’s house. But after hearing what Aleksander had to say last night, I don’t see any of that happening. The daily breakfast scene to Christmas with my family, all began to fade in my head. Maybe I was wrong in thinking they would be better off without me.

“Elliot.” I sat up at the sound of my name, and watched as Thanos entered my room. “Good you are awake. Come with me.”

I removed the blankets off of me and slid out of my bed. Quietly, I walked behind Thanos as he led me down the hall. We began approaching the rooms Melody told me not to go into. Curiosity got the better of me and I had asked Melody why. Her response was a giggle and that the doors were locked and for good reason. I didn’t push the matter.

“I was wondering if you might be having second thoughts about staying here, Elliot.” Thanos said in a business matter. He had stopped in front of a door and turned to look down at me with his ice-cold eyes. I wondered if my eyes looked like that when I talked.

They frightened me the way he was looking at me so I responded with a reasonable answer, “No sir. I like it here.”

He gave me a stern nod and took out a brass key. Unlocking the door in front of us, I looked on, curious as to what he wanted to show me. Before he could open the door all the way, he said, “This is just in case, you begin to change your mind.”

What he showed me almost threw me off my feet. Lying on the hard concrete floor was a head with golden brown hair. Her eyes were shut tight and she was curled up in a fetal position. She was holding her wrist like it was hurt and I could tell she was trying to be strong, even though she wanted to break down. This wasn’t right.

“Why is she here? Why did you bring her here?” I hissed at Thanos. I surprised myself. Never in a million years did I imagine I would give him such a tone. But seeing my best friend lying on that damp ground made something in me snap.

“Elliot?” I watched as Loanna slowly opened her bottle green eyes. Guilt began seeping through my veins at the sight of her. But before I could say anything, Thanos shut the door.

“What are you doing? Let her out of there!” I shouted.

“If I were you, I would lower my tone. You have no authority here and trying my patience is not something I would advice you to do.” Thanos said darkly. I took a step back, not understanding why they would bring Loanna here.

“I meant no disrespect Tha-Thomas. I just…she’s my friend.” I said, almost slipping up on his name. I don’t think him knowing I know his true identity would be a very good idea right now.

“This is just something for you to think about, in case you do decide you want to leave.” Thanos said, and walked away from me.

I stared after him until he was out of sight, and then rushed back to the door. My hand slipped off the doorknob. It was locked. “Lo! Can you hear me Lo? Loanna!” I heard nothing behind the door. She couldn’t hear me.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. None of this was supposed to happen. I was supposed to be happy here. I shouldn’t be blackmailed into staying here. Loanna shouldn’t be kept here against her will. This was all my fault. All my fault. I slumped down next to the door and let my tears fall. I needed to fix this. I couldn’t let them get away with this. I needed to get Loanna out of here.

But there was only one person who I could go to help for now. And going to him, would make everything he said true. Thanos and Melody, no Melania, were dark wizards. Not only were they dark wizards, but they are also the reason he had my parent’s scared at night. And the reason why I moved so much when I was younger. The reason why there was a hint of recognition in my mother’s eyes that night I left when she saw Melania. They were the cause of my family’s misfortune.

It was time I talked to Matthaios again.

Chapter 20

Could I trust him? He betrayed my father, my mother, and my brothers. But then what made him different from me? I betrayed my father, my mother, and my brothers. I was no different from him. No, I needed to stop this self-pitying and save Loanna.

Where would I find Matthaios though? He didn’t normally hang out in the house. Then I heard the piano. Mechanically, I walked toward the music room. I let myself follow the tragic tune until I was outside the door. Nobody else would be able to recognize it as a sad melody, but I was able to recognize the use of the deep notes that made it a dark song.

Without knocking, I entered the room and shut the door soundlessly behind me. Matthaios had his back to me, letting himself get lost in his music. I didn’t want to disturb him, but I didn’t know how long I had until Melody came looking for me.

“Matthaios.” I said to get his attention. He looked over at me, but continued playing. When he didn’t say anything, I said. “I want to go home.”

He didn’t stop playing, as he scoot over on the stool to let me sit. I sat down and let my hands fidget in my lap. “What changed your mind?”

“Thanos is holding Loanna against her will. He told me if I have second thoughts about leaving, then I would be leaving her as well, all by herself.” I looked down at my hands, letting the guilt sink in again.

“Is it only because of her that you want to leave?” Matthaios asked, continuing his solemn song.

“No. You were right about Melody and Thanos.”

“You mean Melania.”

“Yes. They aren’t who I thought they were.” I sighed.

“Anything else?”

I looked at him trying to figure out what else he wanted me to say. I already told him that he was right. Wasn’t that what he wanted? Then it hit me.

“I miss my family.” The realization hit me with such force I nearly fell off the stool.

“Really?” But I ignored him.

I missed my family. I missed the way my mother brought me an apple to my room before lunchtime. I missed the way my father brought home a book he thought I would like. I missed the way Jacoby squeezed my shoulder in a comforting way. I missed the way Otto would jump on my bed to get my attention. And even though it annoyed me to no end, I missed Aleksander’s joking manner. I thought it was because of his joking manner that brought me here. But without him to bicker with it was, well it was boring. I missed him.

“I miss them. All of them. Even Aleksander.” I said aloud. It was true. I missed them all.

“What do you want to do?” Matthaios asked calmly.

“I want to go home.”

“What do you suggest I do?” I turned my head sharply to look at him. Was he being serious? He was looking at me with an unreadable expression.

“If you don’t want to help me, I can get out of here myself.” I stood up swiftly from the piano stool, but was pulled back down by Matthaios.

“Sit. I was not being harsh. I was asking for suggestions.” Matthaios said.

“What do you mean?” I replied, not fully understanding.

“You want to save Loanna right?”

“Yes, of course.”

“What about Aleksander?”

“What do you mean?” I asked dumbfounded.

“Aleksander never made it back home.”

“What? I thought you…you mean he is being kept here too?” I asked, swallowing hard. At Matthaios’ nod, I shut my eyes. Another thing that was my fault.

“Do you want to leave him here?” Matthaios asked.

“No. I would never do that to him.” I snapped my eyes back open.

“Good. This is what is going to happen.”

Chapter 21

I paced the length of my room nervously. My head was spinning and I really should sit, but I was afraid if I sat down for even a second I would scream. I was getting out of here. Tonight. In ten minutes, if Matthaios doesn’t fall behind schedule. I was going to set things right. I was going home.

At the sound of a light knock on my door, I had to will myself not to throw it open. Matthaios entered his wand held firmly in his hand.

“Ok, Loanna will be easy to get out. I was able to get Stephan to trade his position with me tonight. She is being left unguarded at the moment. Aleksander will be harder to get out. I’ll deal with him. You get Loanna out and come back to this room. Hide her if you must. I’ll meet you back here and we will go from there.” Matthaios said.

“Ok. But what if we are caught?” I asked, my mouth going dry at the thought.

“Green sparks should suffice. Point them in the direction of a window, so outside can see them. Back up will arrive at a moments notice.” Matthaios said, putting his hand on the doorknob. “Ready?”

I nodded and he opened the door. Holding my breath, I exited the room not looking back. Matthaios began ascending the hidden staircase, and I made my way down the hall. It seemed like a longer walk than this morning. When I finally made it to the right door, I realized I didn’t have the key. What did I do now? It was useless. I was no hero. I couldn’t do this. My hands began shaking and I tried to gain control again.

Then I remembered I was a wizard. I could do this. Slipping my hand into my pocket, I took out my wand and pointed it at the door. Reciting the unlocking charm, I let a shaky smile fall onto my face as the door slid open. I rushed inside and let my eyes adjust to the dim light.

“Loanna?” I whispered. I still couldn’t see, but I could make out a murky shape in the corner.

“Elliot?” the murky shape whispered back.

“Where are you?” I put my hands out to try and find her. Hearing movement to my right, I moved closer until I felt warm flesh. I touched her face to make sure she was real, and then pulled her into a hug. “I’m so sorry Lolo.”

“It’s not your fault.” She replied laying her head on my shoulder.

“It is my fault. All my fault. They are using you to get to me to stay here.” I choked.

“It wasn’t your idea for them to bring me here. It’s not your fault.”

“But you wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me. You should hate me for putting you through this.” I said, looking at her sadly.

“It’s not your fault. And I don’t hate you. No matter what happens in our lives, I will never hate you. Until I grow old and die, you will always be my friend. Now lets get out of here.” She said, repeating the words I told her what felt like so long ago in my room. I could almost feel her smiling.

The words touched me, more than I thought they would. I let a smile slip onto my lips as I stood up. Letting go of her tiny figure, I lowered my hand into hers. Her hands were so cold. I rubbed my thumb over her hand to try and warm it as I led her out of this room. Peaking outside the door first, I saw that nobody was outside. Smiling, I pulled on her hand and she followed after me. Sneaking down the hall, I didn’t hear the footsteps behind me until it was too late.

“What the hell? How did you get out!” I turned sharply to see a scruffy looking man pulling his wand out. I was able to throw Loanna and myself at the wall in time to miss the yellow sparks.

“Run. Now. Run!” I said, and began to run in the opposite direction. We were just about to make it out of the hallway, when another man came and blocked our way.

“I see you have gotten out of your cage.” The guy smiled creepily at Loanna. She shivered next to me.

“Expellarimus!” I shouted and felt triumphant when the wand flew from out of his hand. Quickly, I caught it and handed it to Loanna. She looked at me like I had just given her a sword, as I turned to face the guy behind us.

The creepy guy laughed behind me, but I kept my eyes firmly on the scruffy guy, who was still armed.

“Are you going to face me Loanna? Let’s see you try. Come on now. Right here in the chest.” The creepy guy mocked.

The scruffy guy looked bored as he swiftly shot his wand at me. I fell to the ground away from Loanna, holding my arm. Trying not to show how much it affected me, I reached for my wand, as the creepy guy continued to mock Loanna.

“Come on Loanna. I don’t have all day. Use the wand. Do it!” he screeched. She jumped but continued to hold the wand limply at her side. Her eyes were filled with full blow fear, and her face was going pale. “Fight you worthless being! You can’t do can you? You are weak!”

“I don’t use my wand to fight. I use it for good.” Loanna replied softly, still not raising her wand.

“You won’t even use it to defend yourself? You are an idiot! Fight!” Creepy guy laughed.

“No. I can’t.” She said, dropping the wand on the ground. I’ve never seen so much pain in Loanna’s eyes before, as she refused to use her wand against the guy threatening to kill her. “I won’t stoop to your level.”

“Serj. Stop teasing and capture them.” The scruffy guy said.

“Right.” Serj replied, and began walking toward Loanna.

“No!” I yelled and jumped up, pulling Loanna behind me. Pointing toward the window, I shot green sparks out as a crashing noise came from upstairs. Sounded like Uncle Matthaios had found himself in a struggle too.

Grabbing Loanna’s hand, I ran toward Serj, and tackled my way past him. I then began running as fast I could. Pushing my way into the kitchen, I stopped dead in my tracks as two people entered the kitchen.

“Elliot? What’s going on?” Melania asked, looking from me to Loanna.

“I’m leaving. You betrayed me, Melania.” I said, my eyes set on her face. Her face changed from a sympathetic look, to one of pure hate.

“After everything I have done for you, this is how you repay me?” she asked, her hazel eyes darkening.

“You brought grief to my family.”

“I’m going to bring a lot more than grief.” She said harshly, pulling out her wand. I was quicker though, and shot a disarming spell at her. I momentarily forgot about Thanos, as red sparks shot toward us. I wasn’t quick enough, and it hit Loanna in the stomach. She flew back in a perfect arc and crumbled onto the floor.

“Loanna!” I shouted and flew to my knees. She was unconscious.

Chapter 22

“Come on Lo. Wake up.” I cried frantically.

“She isn’t going to wake up Elliot. I will make sure of that.” Melania said, walking toward me happily. I ignored her and held onto Loanna’s lifeless body, laying her head on my lap.

Just a couple of steps away, Melania put her hand out to grab me when the sound of the door being broken open was heard from the living room. She turned and let out a frustrated yell as five people began rushing in. Melania and Thanos began fighting with them, and I knew I needed to move Loanna, or she would get trampled on. Picking her up by under her armpits, I dragged her away from the dueling in the middle of the kitchen, and hid us under the table.

I watched from my spot as they all fought. Thanos had a fierce, murderous look on his face and I grew scared for the people who had come to help. I wasn’t able to decipher Melania’s face before she fled from the room. Two men followed after her, and I heard more fighting coming from the hall. It was three against one, but Thanos was tough. He was able to shoot an unforgivable toward one of the men, before being brought down by the other two. I sighed in relieve when ropes flew around the evil man. Then one of the men left the others to help fight, the other stayed to help the man Thanos had injured.

Looking down at Loanna, I moved a piece of her golden brown hair from out of her eyes. She hadn’t moved since she was hit. This was my fault. I should’ve pushed her. I should’ve made us run. Hugging her body close to me, I hoped somebody would be able to help her. I couldn’t imagine life without her.

Faintly I heard my name being called. I didn’t have the energy to answer. I continued to look at my best friend, hoping with everything in my body that she wasn’t dying.

“Elliot! Where are you?”

“Come on Lo. Wake up.” I whispered, a tear falling down my cheeks.

“Elliot! Please.” That voice. I knew that voice. I looked up as Aleksander ran inside.

“Elliot!” He ran toward me and kneeled down hurriedly next to me. “Are you hurt?”

“She won’t wake up Aleks. He hurt her. He could have killed her. She won’t wake up. It’s my fault. She won’t wake up!” I said shakily.

“It’s ok. Keep her still alright?” he said calmly, and aimed his wand at her chest. He said a charm I’ve never heard before and I closed my eyes in anticipation.

Then I felt her move. My eyes flashed back open and she gave me a weak smile. I’ve never been happier to see her bottle green eyes. It felt like a big weight was lifted off my shoulders

“Thank you.” I said, and gave my brother the biggest hug I have ever given any one in my life. He patted my back in a loving way, and stood up.

“Come on. Lets go home.” He said, giving me hand up. I smiled contentedly at him and turned to look at Loanna. It looked like it was hard for her to sit up, so I put my hands out to help her.

“I’m ok.” Was her reply. But when she got on two feet, her knees buckled. I caught her around the waist and threw her arm over my neck. She gave me a grateful smile and let me help her from out of the kitchen. We followed after Aleksander to the living room and out the front door, Loanna and I going slightly slower.

“Both of you hold onto my arm. We are going to apparate.” Aleksander instructed us.

“You don’t have your license though.” I pointed out.

“I’ve been practicing. Just hang on tight.” He smiled impishly. Still holding on to Loanna, I grabbed onto Aleksander’s left arm. Loanna took his right side, forming a small circle. Then I felt the pull around my navel and the house began disappearing before my eyes. But not before I heard a high-pitched scream, which sounded a lot like Melania.

We reappeared in the backyard, almost the exact place I had left from. I could tell by the look on Aleksander’s face that that had been his first time traveling so far, and with people. A smile was plastered on his face, and he looked ready to laugh.

“Good job Aleks. You saved the day.” I said, with a smile on my face.

“Nah. I’m no hero. I just did what was right.” He said, ruffling my hair. I scowled, as my hair began going everywhere and he laughed. I let a smile fall onto my face at his laugh. I had missed this.

“Come on. Lets get inside.” Aleksander said. I nodded and turned my head to look at Loanna. Her face was scrunched up in pain, and I could tell standing was taking up all her strength.

“Are you ok?” I asked her. She nodded her head, her eyes closed, even though she was biting her lip.

Aleksander turned to look at her next, and frowned. He then put his hand on her shoulder. She reopened her eyes, as he picked her up bridal style. “Thank you.” She said looking small.

I led the way to the back door, grateful for my brother’s help. Loanna was tiny, but there was no way I would be able to carry her like that.

The kitchen window was open, and I made out two people sitting at the table. My mother looked like she hadn’t slept in weeks, her eyes blood shot red, and her face sickly pale. Her reddish brown hair was falling out of her messy ponytail and she looked on the verge of tears as she glanced at the clock on the wall. Jacoby was sitting next to her, holding her hand on the table. He had a somber look on his face, and he too looked exhausted. His honey colored eyes were focused on the edge of the table. Neither of them spoke.

“Go on Elliot.” Aleksander said softly from behind me. I nodded and opened the back door. Home at last.
