Default The Whomping Willow

Banner credit: MunchyBubbles

The Whomping Willow is a valuable but extremely violent magical plant that has been on the grounds of Hogwarts since 1971. Beneath, it hides the Shrieking Shack and if you locate the little knot that makes the tree still you might find your way there, if you dare.

The Groundskeeper along with the rest of the staff advice all students to please, don't get too close to this majestic but violent beauty. It is known for attacking all who come close to it and unless you wish to spend the rest of the year in the Hospital Wing; stay at a safe distance from the range of its branches.

If you still want to try your luck in getting closer; don’t forget to duck.

OOC: Please do not role-play for the Whomping Willow.

Ahh, the fresh air.

Daehyun inhaled deeply, only walking around the school grounds relaxing him immensely, along with the rays of sunlight that slightly warmed him. He had his copy of his favourite bestiary, a growling Monster Book of Monsters, safely tucked under his arm, and he would occasionally tickle its spine whenever the book became restless, only to smile at it when it hummed contentedly. A seriously misunderstood book, that one.

He only needed to find a perfect place to read the worn pages that he'd already read over and over again, maybe in the shadows cast by a tree - and that was when he'd spotted it.

The Whomping Willow!

His eyes wide in wonder, he walked closer to the magnificent tree, immediately recognizing it after having heard about it many times before and, to be honest, the stories he'd heard didn't do it justice. It was brilliant! He knew better than to touch it or even get within touching distance from it, but maybe one more step closer from where he stood. It was beautiful.

"DANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!"

A young Aaron exclaimed as he barreled down the hill upon seeing his new best friend! Granted, the two just met a few days ago back at Diagon Alley, but, that was besides the point. They still were best friends, and the two agreed on that back at the book store. Just as they agreed on Danny's nickname. Daniel sounded to plain and sophisticated. Why be boring when you can be fun and upbeat. Danny sounded like a fun and upbeat type of person, hence why Aaron gifted him with that gorgeous name.

"Whatcha got there?" The first year inquired about the book that his fellow firstie was carrying under his arm.

Who in the name of Merlin's beard-

Daehyun yelped upon hearing the loud screech, his book flying from his grip, but he'd caught it just in time before it hit the ground and went on a rampage. Absently petting its spine in soft movements, he turned to look at the only boy in the entire universe who called him Danny. Honestly now, Daniel had only one extra syllable, and he wished so bad for Aaron to use it. "Please don't-" he'd started to say, but the energetic boy had already asked him a question and, being about one of his most treasured books, Danny was already forgotten.

Stepping closer to Aaron and farther from the Whomping Willow - just to be on the safe side - he said, "The Monster Book of Monsters," he grinned, his fingers still stroking the spine of the book that had become agitated when he'd nearly dropped it, its growls resuming to a happy purr. "It's my favourite bestiary," he said, holding the book out for Aaron to have a look. "Just remember to stroke its spine, and it won't bite you." Simple as that. Books that didn't want to tear you to pieces were too overrated, anyway.

*sways*

The leaves rattled peacefully in the late summer breeze. Undisturbed, the branches of the Willow towered over a large green patch of grass.

Light pressure steps on the ground notified it of the arrival of two young students. It twisted its trunk to sway lightly to the left, letting out a loud sinister sound.

*Creeeeeeeeak*

Although the movement seemed innocent enough, it faired as a warning to the students, daring them to test its temper and move closer.

The Monster Book of Monsters...

The MONSTER Book of Monsters...COOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!!!

That was so amazing to Aaron! I mean, he had heard about it and everything,
but he's never actually seen one up close and person. And Danny was already handing him the book and everything! Whaaaaaaat!? "So I just pet the spine?" Aaron had asked the other boy, taking it from his grasp. Fingers gently rubbing against it, Aaron had peered up at Danny and began to say "Like thi-"

THE TREE...

HAD MOVED!

That was so cool! This must have been the Whomping Willow, the boy was certain of it! In a star struck daze, Aaron just handed the book back to it's owner and couldn't help but move closer to the living tree. "Yoooooooo, Danny, let's climb the tree!" Aaron said. Then he continued with a grin on his face. "Last one to the top is a rotten egg!!!" And after that, the boy made a sprint towards the tree, making it to the base of the trunk.

Daehyun kept a close eye on the book, whose curious eyes followed its new holder, but sighed in relief when Aaron had listened to his instructions, and watched the book purr happily in the boy's arms. "Yeah, exactly-"

"WHOA!" The Whomping Willow actually moved!

Lost in his fascination, Daehyun barely registered the book being pushed back in his arms, his fingers moving by themselves to pet the book, and before he knew it, the absolute fool had run towards the deadly tree. "Aaron, no!" He'd tried to grab the ends of the boy's robe, but failed miserably. "Get back here before it kills you!" Was there a professor around? Or an older student who actually knew any spells?

He wasn't going to get himself killed. He might be a "brave" Gryffindor, but he wasn't a stupidly reckless Gryffindor.

... though someone should help the fool, and he prayed that it wouldn't have to be him.

Aaron had already started his ascent up the tree when he heard Danny call out to him, warning him not to do what he was doing. Saying that it was going to kill him and everything. Pshhhhh. As if. This Whomping Willow wouldn't be able to live up to Aaron's abilities to move around fast, especially in a tree. The boy basically was a spider monkey when it came to climbing skills and agility. What he lacked for in strength, he made up for in dexterity.

Reaching the part of the tree where it began to split off into branches, the boy sat on one of them and called back to Danny "Come on! Where's your sense of adventure...Daniel..." Hopefully saying his full name would rile him up a bit. But if not, this next part should do the trick. "I thought Gryffyndor's were supposed to be brave! Not cowardly!" Aaron had mused with a sly smile trickling across his visage.

Please listen and don't be stupid, please listen and don't be stupid.

... no such luck.

Daehyun would've probably been amazed at Aaron's climbing abilities - he had to hand it to the boy, he was fast - if it weren't for him being in the middle of getting himself killed. His eyes were impossibly large as he watched Aaron sit on a branch, and he could only watch, petrified in his spot. He didn't even notice the boy had finally called him Daniel, and he wasn't the least bothered by the comment about bravery. "Please, get down from it! Let's-" he looked frantically to the side, spotting a nearby tree. "Let's climb that one instead!" There was no way he was actually climbing a tree to fall and break something, but maybe he could fool Aaron?

... he had a feeling he couldn't.

He wondered if his Monster Book of Monsters would chase him off the tree if he let it loose. But then again, it could do more damage than good.

Glancing over at the tree Danny had tried to direct his attention towards, Aaron just shrugged his shoulders at the comment made by him. "Meh. That one of there is no fun. It doesn't move. But this one. This one would make for a fantastic adventure story." A moment of silence rang through the air as Aaron had thought about the stories he could tell about this moment. "I mean just think about it!" He began to continue. "Everyone would be impressed by the story of the time I climbed a living tree...over the time I climbed...a tree." Emphasis on just the tree. Because that would have been boring, but apparently Danny couldn't realize it.

"But either way, this thing won't hurt me! It hasn't done anything yet!" Aaron added to his last bit, getting up and making his way to a branch higher up. Taking a seat once again, Aaron had just stared down at the little Lion. "C'mon Danny! It's so much fun!"

Fourth year was shaping up to be... well, Liam couldn't say he was actually happy about being back at school. And he hadn't even been here for that long. Between the commotion at the feast that he - along with everyone else - had been privy to and the various other angst-inducing things in his life Liam was Tired.

Fourteen was hard, guys.

So he had taken to a new stress-relief activity: drawing. He wasn't particularly good at it or anything but it did seem to help him clear his head and calm down.

He made his way toward the Whomping Willow, a stack of papers in his arms, intent on drawing the challenge that was the violent tree. He sat a safe distance away, arranging the papers on his lap and grabbing a pencil from his bag. He really did need to ask for a sketchbook for his birthday.

*sways*

After its initial warning only a student foolish enough to risk getting violently whomped would press on and anger the Willow further. Feeling its roots and branches touched by a human, the large tree began to sway ominously to get rid of the intruder.

It shrugged its roots causing the boy to slid off the branch onto the soft ground. It did not enjoy climbers.

*SWOOSH*

One of its branches hurled forward...

*THUD*

It landed on the grass, right next to the boy's head. Annoyed, it straightened up, reaching its branches up into the sky, ready to let its anger show once more.

The young students were playing a dangerous game. It wasn't known for missing twice.

Daehyun was beginning to breathe hard upon noticing the Whomping Willow begin to move, while Aaron only talked about it being fun and impressive. "They won't be impressed at your funeral! Now please, get down from-"

OH NO NO NO NO.

He watched in horror as the Whomping Willow shook Aaron off its branches, and before he had time to react and pull him away, it thudded against the ground right next to the boy's head! Dropping his book, he ran to pull Aaron away from the tree before it decided to have less mercy on the fool, and thanked the heavens that Aaron wasn't much bigger than him, or else he never would've moved him away.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, scanning the boy once they were a good distance from the tree, momentarily forgetting about The Monster Book of Monsters, which had moved to hide in the shadows cast by a nearby tree. Even the book had more good sense and didn't approach the Whomping Willow! "Did you break anything when you fell?" He would nag about it for years, but first he needed to make sure Aaron didn't die on his watch.

She'd been running for some time and the Slytherin sixth year was finally feeling the exhaustion set in as she neared the willow and slowed to a stop. It was a good feeling, one she only got after a run. It was the breathlessness and the mind being clear of anything but what was right in front of her at the given moment. She felt refreshed.

Looking around as she stretched out, Junia noticed her housemate nearby. She'd seen him around, knew his name, though he seemed to be the quiet sort and she wouldn't say she knew him well. Still, she supposed there was no harm in saying hello.

"I didn't know you were into art," She offered in greeting. Drawing was something she did occasionally, too, but not as much as when she was young.

Liam, having been hyper-focused on his sketch, hadn't noticed anything else about his surroundings until someone spoke to him. He looked up toward the voice, a small smile twitching at the corner of his lips when he recognized an older girl from his house. He'd never really spoken to her but he knew her name and he knew that he'd thought before that she seemed nice.

"It just sort of happened recently," he answered easily. He glanced down at the drawing, more realistic than the stuff he typically did. "I'm still learning how to do it, though. So I'm not very good." Although Cam had been impressed when he saw but... best friends were supposed to be impressed about things, so that was different.

"Do you draw?" He asked, lifting his gaze back to Junia.

It wasn't the safest place in the grounds, but the little patch of grass near the whomping willow literally was the best spot in the school grounds to do some cloud watching. It was hard sometimes, when it went really cloudy. But it was mid-september, and the weather was still pretty good. So she was heading out to the grounds to do some cloud watching, before the weather got too bad, and she wouldn't be able to see any of the clouds, or at least that there would be too many for her to look properly. It wasn't often she came in the grounds to paint, so this was going to be fun.

So with a smile on her face the sixth year was heading down to her little spot on the grounds to go and do some cloud watching. It was pretty early in the morning, so she was hoping that it wasn't going to be too busy. Ahh. Perfect. It was empty. Beaming, the sixth year laid down on the comfy grass, and looked up at the clouds. Oh. This was lovely.

The Groundskeeper enjoyed the mornings at Hogwarts the most. The students were either still asleep, having breakfast in the Great Hall or off for their first lesson of the day. Which meant, FREE TIME. Some at least. Although he spent a lot of his time in the Igloo, he liked to spend the mornings outside. Preferrably by the magnificent Whomping Willow, on a small patch of grass. It was the perfect place to watch the clouds move.

This particular morning was no different. After his first round of the Grounds, he made his way to the Willow to relax a little before he joined the rest of school for his second breakfast. Perhaps he would find some interesting shapes in the clouds and ask Laurel about them later on. In the middle of this thought, he noticed there was already someone there.

In HIS spot.

Squinting, he stopped to look. Who else knew of this cloud watching spot near the Willow? He huffed and puffed grumpily and strode up to the figure, recognizing the Hufflepuff girl immediately. For a moment he hesitated. Would he turn around and find a new place for cloud watching or fight join Harriet?

Well, he wasn't a quitter. So, he walked up to the girl, awkwardly shifting his weight from left to right.

"Miss Paton, good morning!" He announced his arrival with a loud greeting. He would figure out what her business was in his spot if she shared his interests. "Lovely day, isn't it?" Isn't it? Isn't it a lovely day for some cloud watching?

Or just, you know... Whatcha doing here?

Harriet loved the grounds at this time of the day. It was quiet, not too busy, and it was just really peaceful. She loved it. She loved the grounds all the time, but this time of the day was great. Nobody was running around, and nobody was screeching. It was also a great time of the day to paint. She loved dawn, but not as much as she loved sleep. Today though, she was just going to enjoy the clouds going by, and hopefully see if there were any pictures that she could see. It might be inspiring for her to do some painting. She needed some new inspiration.

She was happily, pretty content, when she heard footsteps. Oh no. Hopefully they wouldn't interrupt her. Could she pretend to be asleep? hopefully. Oh. Someone was talking to her. It had to be a professor. Only they called her Miss Paton. It was bad. She really couldn't ignore a professor. That would not be nice.

The sixth year opened her eyes, and smiled at the Professor. She pushed herself up, so she wasn't lying down on her back and talking to the professor. "Hi Professor" She smiled at him. "It really is. I love coming and cloud watching at this time in the morning. It's so nice and peaceful"

"Practice helps." Though not everyone was destined to be an artist. Junia was of the mind that if you enjoyed something, you should do it for you, skillfully or not.

Moving closer, the sixth year chanced a glance at his depiction of the willow. It was an ambitious choice, considering the unpredictability of the model. At any moment the tree could twist, shake, and lash out visciously as it was known to do. Perhaps the challenge of it was what made it so appealing.

"I used to. When I was small I'd draw pictures for my family and give them as gifts. I'd pick something they liked and go from there. They seemed to appreciate it." Or perhaps they were just humoring her. It wasn't until recently that she questioned such things, but maybe that was a part of growing up. "What made you want to start?" She moved onto the ground beside him, stretching out her legs.

Just as the boy was about to get up and start climbing again, the tree had flung him off! As the boy went sailing through the air, he felt something snag on one of the branches but couldn't tell what. Then he had made contact with the ground, hitting it with a hard thud. Thankfully, nothing was broken, and Aaron had managed to hit a soft patch of dirt. There was probably a few cuts and maybe a bruise or two that would reveal itself in due time-

BUT HOLY MERLIN THE TREE HAD ALMOST HIT HIM!!!

Aaron couldn't help but watch in horror as the branch swung right next to the boys head, nearly missing. That's when his comrade, Danny, went and dragged him out of there. The first year was shocked at all the events that had just played out before him. Standing up, eyes and mouth both wide open, Aaron couldn't help but say "...WOW! THAT WAS SO COOL!!!!!" The first year had started to giggle like a little girl after speaking.

That's when a moment of horror struck him. Feeling around frantically after brushing the dirt off himself, Aaron couldn't feel his wand. Oh no. That must have been what got snagged! The Brit thought. "Danny, don't freak out when I say this, but now I have to climb the tree." Aaron then began to explain what had happened while he was falling. "My wand holster got snagged on one of the branches, and it's still in the tree! See!" With his left hand, the firstie had pointed to the wand and holster caught on a branch where the boy had been sitting.

Did this boy have a death wish?

Daehyun watched Aaron with worry as the boy searched himself, thinking that he was feeling pain somewhere, or wasn't even feeling his limbs, only to end up rolling his eyes when he'd declared his wand was stuck in the Whomping Willow's branches. "No," he said, a little too loud and a little too authoritative. "What you're going to do is go catch my book," he pointed towards the nearby tree where his copy of The Monster Book of Monsters was resting. "And be careful with it, it's my favourite book."

He sighed, searching his pockets for his wand. "I'll-I'll try to get your wand," he said, standing up to look at the intimidating tree. He'd read plenty of times about Wingardium Leviosa. Just a swish and a flick. Simple as that.

... if only he'd ever tried to actually cast the spell.

Aaron was awestruck.

Did Danny really just take his position on something, and show that he meant business??

This was news to the first year. Just only a few days ago, this boy that he'd met was extremely shy. And now...he was...taking charge? Now that was more like it! That's what Aaron liked to see! People sticking up for themselves! But in all seriousness, as much as he wanted to listen to his admirable, Aaron just couldn't do that. It was his wand. If something were to happen it, how was he supposed to do his magic here at the school? He didn't want the spell to go wild and mess up. Also because then he had a feeling Danny would feel bad for breaking or damaging his wand. And the only one to blame here was himself. Aaron was the one who climbed the tree and got it stuck up there in the first place, so he was going to get it down from said tree.

Aaron might not have been the wisest student, but he could face the consequences of his wrong doings.

"As much as I admire you trying to do that, it's my wand. And this-" Aaron had made reference to the situation before them. "-is my bed, so I must fix it myself. I won't push this responsibility on to another person." He triumphantly stated, staying his ground, not being swayed by the other student's words.

Spinning confidently, Aaron had begun to approach the tree hands in the air, above his head. Hopefully, the tree could understand words, I mean, it was magical after all, and it was obviously sentient. Speaking up, the boy had begun to talk to the tree, saying in a small and pleading voice "Ummm. Hi. Mr, or Mrs, Tree. Yea, my wand kinda got stuck in you, so if you could just please lower it to me gently please, that would be nice. Or just let me climb up to it, and I'll be right down." That was all.

Daehyun blinked.

... and blinked some more.

It had taken him a moment to process what Aaron had told him, and when he finally did, the boy had taken off once again towards his untimely death the Whomping Willow. He was close - so close - to walking away and letting him do whatever he wanted, but instead sighed, and decided to try one more time.

Shaking his head at the boy's recklessness, he pulled on the back of his robes to move him out of the tree's reach.

... except he knew he had zero strength to actually move a person, so he'd used all of his strength without knowing how hard it would be to move Aaron, and found himself falling onto the grass. He was too occupied to brush dirt off his robes to notice if he'd dragged Aaron down with him or not. "Please, listen to me this one time. I thought I was the brave Gryffindor?" No, he wasn't, but they were Aaron's words. "If you want to fix this, please go catch my book. The one I dropped to save you from the tree."

Sigh.

*sways*

Having got rid of the climber, the Whomping Willow made one last shrug which caused some of the leaves to fall to the ground along with a wand the boy had left. The wand bounced off the trunk of the tree, the impact causing it to send small blue sparks up in the air. It then fell down and landed softly on the grass.

The Willow paid no mind to it. Instead it slowly relaxed its branches and came to a peaceful, steady sway in the wind.

Practice helps. Liam nodded, glancing at Junia. He could attest to the practice thing; he could see the difference in talent between drawings he did last year and the ones he completed more recently. He still wasn't that proud of his work or anything but... it was nice, being able to see your own improvement.

He turned the papers just slightly to make it easier for her to see when she moved closer. Not that he was showing off or anything but... you know. He listened to her as she told him that she used to draw, and nodded slowly. "I'm sure they did." He hoped so, at least. Because he was planning on doing some drawings for his own family. Mainly, his sister, and he was worried about if she'd like them or not.

Turning his gaze back to the Whomping Willow, Liam shrugged. "I started doodling in class, just 'cause I have a hard time paying attention sometimes." As much as he tried to be a good student. "And it sort of just went from there, I guess? I realized that it sort of helps me clear my head." And Junia probably didn't care to know that much, but she was going to hear about it anyway, apparently.
