Default The Lake

Graphic credit: Felixir

The large freshwater lake of Hogwarts is located just south of the castle. About half a mile wide in diameter, the lake dominates much of the school's landscape, a steely and ominous mass of icy water in the winter, yet an inviting and refreshing sight once the weather starts to heat up. On one of its banks, a towering beech tree stands sentinel, and is a popular location to meet and relax. Castle-side of the lake stands the boathouse.

You may swim in the lake, but be careful, and also mindful of the creatures that reside here. Merpeople, grindylows, and the Great Squid, to name but a few, call these watery depths their home. You would do well to leave them in peace. If they feel like it, they'll come to you; the Giant Squid, who goes by the name of Bartholomew Henry, has been known to bask in the shallows on sunny days.

OOC: Please do not RP for the Giant Squid.

Phoenix wasn't one that someone might call an "outdoorsy kid" but that didn't mean he couldn't enjoy a nice day outside. Especially when the weather was starting to get a little cooler and he wanted to take advantage of the weather while it was still relatively warm. The dock of the lake was one place where he sometimes enjoyed doing his homework when the weather was favorable, but that was not why he was out here today. Today he was more interested in what was going on in the lake than to be preoccupied with writing or reading.

The lake life at Hogwarts was really interesting and he was hoping to observe some of it today. And if all else failed, he could always get some gillyweed. But that felt a bit drastic unless he was ready to do some serious observation. The lake water was a little cold after all.

It seems Phoenix wasn't the only one with the idea of taking advantage of the weather before it got uncomfortably freezing. The cold was just far too harsh in Scotland for his liking, even Sailor had to admit, so while he still could, the grounds were part of Sailor's weird and unfixed schedule. He had been at the Whomping Willow earlier, sneakily throwing rocks and small debris from the ground at it to elicit a reaction but that became boring after a couple of minutes. He'd try some other time.

A bit later, Sailor found himself by the lake, close to the forest so he wouldn't easily be spotted. If one sat still enough, nobody would notice. He stared at the lake for a while, hoping for a Giant Squid sighting. He'd wait for as long as he could, until it was dark of when he was hungry. Instead of the squid, however, the Ravenclaw spotted his dorm mate after some squinting and making sure it really was Phoenix from afar. Abandoning post, Sailor moved from his position, choosing the path where he'd least be seen, and made his way towards the other boy.

"The squid is probably not out today," Sailor said out of the blue, announcing his presence. He assumed that's why Phoenix was here, anyway.

Joel Peter Hellmann, only an eleven-year-old in this huge castle, vowed to discover every inch of the castle to show it to his brother. It just didn't occur to him that the very same brother had 3 more years than him to do exactly that. He was trying to be cooler than his brother, see? So, he tried to see as much as his little legs could carry him in-between... everything.

Which meant he was occasionally late to the classes, but that wasn't the point.

Today was one such day, during which he was discovering the Lake. He deliberately chose a Saturday for this, because the lake (and grounds in general) seemed interesting enough to spare ONE WHOLE DAY for them!

Minus the homeworks. But who cared about those anyway??

Breathing in the fresh air, Joel walked up to the lake, sat down by the edge and set his blue eyes on its surface. Maybe he could meet a mer...person!

His eyes cast across the lake, Phoenix waited. And he waited some more. His eyes scanned for any movement further out, then drew nearer to see if there was any sense of movement closer to him. But there didn't seem to be anything going on. Not even so much as a ripple. This was honestly boring, even by Phoenix's measure, and he was about to give up or maybe go for a walk. But he knew sometimes patience and waiting was necessary for the best observation and experimentation.

He reached for his journal to record some facts, just as he heard a voice, causing him to turn. .....where did Sailor come from? Had it been that obvious what he was doing? Though to be fair, he wasn't JUST looking for the giant squid, but the confidence in his dormmate's words made Phoenix curious. "Oh? Why is it probable?"

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Meredith had been stuck inside the Gryffindor common room with a stack of essays that were due on Monday. But the harder she tried to focus, the less she wanted to do her homework. What was the harm in putting it off until tonight?

Having made a decision, she put her work in her dormitory drawer prior to heading out of the Common Room and moved downstairs with her trusted camera around her neck.

She took pictures of things that interested her as she walked. A random tree, a squirrel on another tree. The distant clouds were gradually turning grey though and she wanted to keep an eye on it in case it started raining. She had charmed her camera into being waterproof though.

It didn't take her long to arrive at the Lake, where she came to a halt a good distance away. Every time she was near a large body of water, she felt a strange sensation in her stomach. Something she couldn't put her finger on other. "Don't get too close to the water, kid" she warned a younger, most likely first-year student. In the meantime, she would stand safely near this tree... Yes, a reasonable distance from the water. The first-year boat ride to Hogwarts was the last time she HAD to be anywhere near it. Why did Hogwarts have this stupid Lake in the first place?! Did no one else see the DANGER it possessed?!

The Lake was, of course, fascinating. Joel wished he could hold his breath enough to explore what was inside. He knew about Merpeople of course, he thought it would be super cool to see one in person too. Maybe, if he stuck his head in, they would come to him? He got up, but before he could go any closer, someone called out to him. He turned around, looking confused.

"Why?" he called back. It was an older girl who... didn't go near the lake? But why?

"What's in there?"

Sailor looked at Phoenix as his dorm mate turned to meet his gaze and nodded at him as his way of saying hello, before looking back at the lake. No ripples. No bubbles. Not much movement, aside from the wind blowing. The lake was disturbingly quiet at the moment. "I've been observing." Sailor wasn't sure for how long, but it felt long. "The squid might be entertaining the Slytherins in their common room. I once heard from a passing pair of Slytherins before. It's possible." Not that he meant to eavesdrop at that moment, but conversations holding information like that were hard to ignore and forget.

He had also noticed the journal in Phoenix's possession. "Are you doing research? What are you taking notes of?" Even without the affirmation, Sailor was already intrigued with the idea of it. Observation was a data-gathering method, and that was what he thought Phoenix was out here for. Sailor could learn a new thing or two.

Had Meredith known that the first year had been thinking about putting his head in the Lake to 'look around' she would have called him a fool. She admired the lake but also did not like the thought of it. Even if her classmates attempted to convince her that the Giant Squid was harmless.

She noticed the kid turn to face her, and his question made her think. Why? "Because... " She tried to come up with something on the spur of the moment that didn't sound childish " Because there's a strong current in the water!" She said, motioning dramatically to the calm water behind him.

"There are merpeople down there. And a Giant Squid named Bartholomew Henry, as well as Grindylows and fishes." She shuddered at the thought of a large fish coming up from the vast darkness below and swimming against her legs. "Just be careful..."

Sometimes a girl just needed to chill, you know? Okay, that's not true. Keighley wasn't at all chilling. The fifth year was studying. Already. That's what some downtime on a weekend meant for her. A short while where she only focused on the textbooks and parchments in front of her. She hoped that starting all of her serious studies early on in the term would serve her well when it came time for her to sit her OWLs.

With how busy she had made herself at the start of the term, it was a wonder she found five minutes to herself whenever she wasn't asleep. It was all her own doing though, she had divided up her time as she saw best fit between lessons, homework, studies, MMA, socializing and everything else. Whatever came from it would all be on her and no one else.

So as it was, the blonde could currently be found sitting beneath a tree near the lake, a textbook propped open on her lap as she read. At her side was her cat Kanga, whom was currently the one that happened to be 'chilling'.

Mr. Mercer Branxton didn't care what the temperature was, and he didn't care if it might start raining soon. He was on a mission. Granted, it was only a mission in his own mind, but he was on one. He abandoned his coat, shoes, and socks on the beach, rolled up the legs of his trousers, and had plunged into calf-deep water.

He sloshed thoughtfully back and forth in the shallow lake water, careful not to stray too far from the shore but otherwise not too concerned about being barefoot in a lake full of merpeople, grindylows, and a giant squid. Nothing to see here except a quietly eccentric Ravenclaw working out his own thoughts.

Atlas had been down here an embarrassingly long time. Just standing here. At the edge of the lake and just out of reach of the lapping waves that lazily washed up on the shore as something disturbed the water. Merpeople? THE Giant Squid themselves? Could be neither, but Atlas knew which one he was banking on.

It had been in the middle of the night while taking a break from his tinkering that he had looked through THE journal and realized that he...hadn't actually gone into the lake before. Sure, there had been a class activity or two where he had fallen into it because he was a rubbish flyer, but he had never actually stepped into it of his own accord AND he still needed to knock off playing Slaps with Bartholomew Henry. Yes, it had been some stupid thing that he and Aries had put on their list when they were first years...but it was his stupid thing to accomplish now and it was the itch he just could not scratch and was irritating him beyond belief.

Only problem being that the was that the air and water temperature were already chilling more than he would like...and the water looked...kind of gross. Bring him a chlorine swimming pool, please?

"Listen," he said to himself, swinging his arms in front of himself until they crossed and then repeating the gesture behind his back. "I know you don't want to do this...but listen..." Atlas' eyes glanced over to his left where his shoes and socks sat on the ground, socks tucked neatly into his shoes that were perfectly parallel with one another. "...you NEED this...so just...do it...get it over with..."

If he had known, noticed, that someone was sitting literally just a few yards behind him under a tree...he would not be talking aloud to himself.

Hmm...

Joel didn't know enough to really tell if the Lake drained to somewhere. He turned his eyes to it as the girl listed a few reasons not to go in. He couldn't really tell if it did drain. He would have to go study a map of it. Or ask a Merpeople. For now though, he seemed convinced, and he approached the girl.

"What's a Grindylow?" He knew a decent amount of magical creatures, thanks to reading from the Hogwarts material of his brother and sister, but he didn't know that one.

Finn did not particularly care for exercising, but he'd learned that a brisk walk through the grounds made for a good break from studying. Better than a quick game of Gobstones, honestly, which had been a disappointing discovery given how much more fun Gobstones was than walking aimlessly. Today's walk took him by the lake, where the sight of a boy standing in the water quickly distracted him from his thoughts of Gobstones and Goblin wars.

Wasn't it too cold for swimming?

He supposed it must not be. Without thinking too much about it, Finn kicked off his shoes and socks. Hobbling bent over toward the waterline, he rolled up his trousers and strolled into the water toward the boy. "What are you doing?" he asked as he got closer. He shivered a bit. The water was cold, but he certainly felt more alert than he'd been ten minutes ago.

Mercer's deep concentration (and chilly toes) was interrupted by someone else splashing into the shallows, and he glanced up with a little puzzled look on his face. He barely understood why he did things sometimes, let alone why other people would join him. And yet, here he was, starting a party in the lake.

"I was... well. What are you doing, actually? Because the water is actually much colder than I thought it would be and I'm just wondering if you'd miss your toes? Also I think a fish keeps biting my big toe. So." Mercer crouched briefly and came up with a small silver fish that he immediately released. "It's not his fault, I guess. Toes look like food, don't they?"

Being the generally observant one that Keighley sometimes was, she had taken notice of Atlas out of the corner of her eye. This had been before she had sat down and gotten herself as comfortable as one could be sat beneath a tree with her textbook and parchments opened up on her lap and around her. It had also been before she had lost herself in her reading and therefore, sorta forgot that she wasn't at all alone. Well she wasn't entirely anyhow since she had her cat beside her but that was beside the point.

So it was when she heard someone talking, on instinct, Keigh looked up with some confusion on her face. "Hmm?" she hummed softly under her breath. Whether or not she had been questioning the other persons "Listen" or she was just responding to something else wasn't entirely clear. With a small tilt of her head she took in the lack of shoes and socks upon his feet and just how close he was to the water. Was he planning on jumping in? Hopefully he had at least placed a warming charm upon himself like she had done many times when she went wading into the lake with Jude.

"Is everything.. alright?" the blonde spoke up loudly enough to be heard but also making sure not to be shouting. "If you haven't already, you might want to consider a warming charm before going in. The water can be downright chilly sometimes." Speaking from experience here.

"What's a Grindylow?" He knew a decent amount of magical creatures, thanks to reading from the Hogwarts material of his brother and sister, but he didn't know that one.

Meredith took a step away from the tree and towards the Lake, but then changed her mind and stood a safe distance away. She felt relieved when the first year approached her instead.

The cold was, honestly, the least of Atlas' concerns when it came to stepping into the lake. All he could thinking about was sanitation, not that the accusatory voice and eyes of Kinsay James were echoing in his thoughts or anything...her FALSE accusations for the record. Sure, he knew plenty about how ecosystems had their methods that were effective in the removal of industrial pollutants as well as metabolize waste present in the water. But...still...

Just HOW sanitary was it in here?

His sacrifice of the flesh, not to be dramatic or anything, better be worth it. And the showers better be available once he hauled himself back to the common room. And Freddie better have left some shampoo too.

The tips of his toes just barely touching the edge of the water, Atlas continued to inch his way into the water...one centimeter at a time...and had just held his breath in preparation of submerging his toes when a voice coming behind him made him nearly jump right out of his goosebumpy skin. And his shin was even more goosebumpy now too. He really needed to work on his alertness to his surroundings, honestly. For as much self preservation as he liked to pride himself on...he was pretty pathetic.

"What?" he heaved as he pivoted slightly to look behind him, his expression peak kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar. "Yeah. Sure. Everything is fine." Mostly. Nothing to be done about the sanitation levels of the lake. "I'm good. Heating Charm and all that." A lie, he didn't have one in place but that was whatever.

EAT HUMANS!?

Joel frowned, clearly distraught at the thought. No no, that could not be true! His parents spoke a lot about how they swam in the Lake when the weather was nice! And even his big sister did it if he remembered it right... no, this couldn't be true. Or they dwelled on the lake bed instead of hanging around by the surface, maybe? "Are you sure?" he asked, because... he was confused. He couldn't exactly remember, but... yeah, he definitely had to read on the topic!

He was still distracted, eyes on the lake, and so he responded to her a second late. "What? Yeah, first year. Name is Joel, nice to meet you."

Eat humans... yeah, he was going to ask that to other people for sure!

Once Sailor met his gaze, Poenix slid over a bit as a way of making room if his dormmate wanted to come over by him and sit, then he turned his eyes back towards the lake momentarily. "Oh... like for a while or just today?" Because that could old two very different meanings. If Sailor had been observing the squid's daily habits over a length of time, that could tell him something about when he was more likely to make an appearance because creatures often followed an intrinsic schedule, even if not so strict. But if it was just for a little while today, there would have to be something more telling for him to believe it wasn't likely for the squid to appear eventually. But either way, Phoenix was curious.

Entertaining the Slytherins. Phoenix nodded as he considered this tidbit of information. "Must be cool to be able to look at all the sea life through the porthole windows any time you want." Not that he really wanted a trade. He really did like their own common room a whole lot and thought it was the best at the school. "My cousin was a Slytherin," he added as an afterthought. He did get a chance to see those porthole windows because of him, but he really missed Benjee being at school with him.

He glanced down at his journal. "Yeah, kind of. Nothing really official, but I thought I'd start writing down my observations out here. I saw some grindylows the other morning, just wanted to see what else I could find." Or more grindylows of course, but recording observations was the best way to find patterns.

Indeed, the silent exchange between them both was enough invitation to Sailor, so the went and sat beside Phoenix. He briefly felt a nagging feeling to dip his toe in the lake, but that would require removing his shoes and facing the probability of being dragged underwater by some creature. "Just today," he replied, still squinting at the lake and hoping for movement. "I was by the Willow earlier. It moved its branches around but nobody came close enough to be attacked." Maybe Sailor's timing was just bad today. He had seen nothing particular interesting or curious so far, and no, the pair of older students he saw possibly kissing in the shadows did not count. "Have you seen the squid before?"

Sailor considered Phoenix's thoughts there. "Cool, yes. But I think their common room might be badly lit." He believed the Slytherins had better chances of seeing the squid than most of them here in school, because of the location of their common room, but being down that deep in the lake meant eerie damp vibes. The lighting in the eagles' nest was much better. "I don't know anyone in my family who is a Slytherin. My sister is a Hufflepuff, sixth year." And their mum was a muggle, their dad a squib, but Sailor wasn't going to openly talk about that. "Did your cousin ever let you into the Slytherin dungeons?" Sailor supposed that was something family did, even if his sister annoyed him every time she wanted to admire the view from up the Ravenclaw tower. Next time, he'd probably tell her to shove off.

The mention of grindylows definitely caught Sailor's attention. He'd never seen them. "Grindylows near the surface?" That completely erased any of Sailor's intentions to dip his toe.

Oops. Had she startled him? Keigh couldn't be too sure if she had or not, given she couldn't see his face at all since Atlas had his back to her. When he did turn slightly to look over at her and he spoke, it seemed as though she had. Perhaps it was due to the cold however. Neither was much of a big deal honestly. Not unless he got upset with her from keeping him from diving into the lake.

"Okay then, if you're sure." Who was she to question what he was doing? "That's good cause you could catch a nasty chill when you emerge from the lake again." It had happened to her before. All the shivering and shaking wasn't pleasant on an already cool day.

Running her fingers through Kanga's soft fur, the blonde was about to turn her attention back to her reading when she decided one more question couldn't hurt, right? "Why are you going swimming now, anyhow?" Consider her curious.

No yes. As always, he was perfectly aware of his surroundings and nothing ever startled him. This was the story he was telling himself right now at least so that he did not feel utterly ridiculous for having such a poor sense of his surroundings despite everything. It was like his brain just...shut that part of himself down or something after everything from his first year. Whatever. It was fine. Just because his likelihood of being petrified by a basilisk before he even knew what he was looking at was quite astronomical meant nothing.

AnYwAy.

"I am," he nodded in confirmation. Yet another story he was telling himself but not like she knew any better. Part of him wanted to behave a bit...childish in his own pettiness take over and say something like 'thanks mom' to her, but several things stopped him. Among those things being that his actual mom did not speak that way and another being that, well, he knew saying it was just him being a jerk and something (someone?) was rubbing off on him more and more who was anything but a sarcastic jerk so...Atlas was likewise toning it down.

Anyway. Again. Anyway.

What he was NOT going to do was wear his heart on his sleeve, however. "I'm not going swimming," he replied easily and, almost, irritated by the assumption. "I've just got..." A promise, a vow, to fulfil and he was going to likely stand here until his toes froze off trying to fulfil it. "...something I need to do...just waiting on Bartholomew Henry."

So...where was the stupid giant squid?

Was she sure?

Meredith stared at the water, having a feeling of dread in the pit of her stomach and she had to look away. "It's in the textbook, right?" Perhaps she shouldn't have formed it into a question... But she was certain that she had read it before while flipping through her textbook when she had been bored in class.

"I don't like the Lake to be honest.." she murmured more to herself than to him and took a seat in front of the tree. She began to pluck the grass with her fingers, her bitten nails painted a deep red color, and placed the grass into a heap in front of her. "Nice to meet you as well" she said, her smile reaching her eyes. "How are you finding Hogwarts so far?"

So...where was the stupid giant squid?
Keighley gave a nod of her head. Good for him, being all prepared and that. Not everyone would've thought about heating charms BEFORE entering the water. It happens. She would know. There had been a time or two where she had been in a hurry or in such a joyous mood that it had simply slipped her mind in that moment. She learned her lesson from it.

Erm.. huh? If he wasn't going swimming then.. what was he doing? Don't mind her for looking mildly puzzled right then. "Oh, okay?" It hadn't been meant to come out as
a question but it had. "Forgive me for asking this but.. what does waiting for Bartholomew Henry have to do with you standing in the freezing cold water for?" Perhaps it wasn't any of her business but she was curious. Annnnnnd Atlas was outside where anyone at all could see him. Surely he didn't have to be IN the water to speak with the giant squid?
