Accessible from the castle via the Clock Tower, the courtyard is both a throughway, leading to the wooden bridge which spans the nearby ravine, and a popular area of the grounds in its own right.

Many students spend their free time here outside of classes, particularly during break or lunch. Between lessons, this area is usually crowded with students catching up with their friends, getting in a round of gobstones, or lingering under the pear tree while they wait to head to their next class. A covered cloister surrounds the paved courtyard, and stone benches are spaced throughout the covered area, as well as dotted around the courtyard itself. Much of the architecture is in the gothic style, from the arches to the gargoyle parapets.

In the middle of the courtyard is an ancient fountain flanked by stone eagle sculptures, their features somewhat worn away by the elements over the years. Feel free to make a wish and toss a coin into the fountain, but be aware that once it's gone, it's gone. Any attempts to retrieve it will be unsuccessful, as the coin will keep magically sinking out of reach. Do try to jump into the fountain; staff will take pains to rescue you, but they're unlikely to be very impressed.

An addition to the courtyard as of 2104 is a bronze plaque, hanging on a restored pillar, its cracks and missing pieces clearly visible to those who take a good look. Both the pillar and its commemorative feature have now been charmed to prevent theft. The plaque reads:

It was a dreary sort of day, overcast and with the chance of rain, but it made the autumn colors of Hogwarts pop against the grey sky. It was, perhaps, scarf weather...though Mitsuki had not put one on nor was she wearing particularly heavy robes as she made her way out of the great double doors and to find herself a suitable spot in the courtyard to read or work on her calligraphy - she had not yet decided which and was waiting for the spot to reveal her intentions to her.

The Ravenclaw circled a few potential spots but to no avail, thus her haphazard zigzag about the courtyard continue. One of her lofty sweeps brought her across the path of the pillar with a plaque installed upon it...which elicited a small pause as she read over its message yet again despite having committed it to memory in her first year.

"I'm thinking of writing graffiti on that plaque," Mercer appeared out of nowhere, which was a bit of a feat considering he was only just sort of appreciating where his arms and legs were supposed to go most days. He'd been eyeing the pear tree for a climb and thinking it was way too cold for a dip in the fountain. But Mitsuki needed company anyway.

He splayed out on the bench beside her and used her leg as a chilly pillow. "But it's charmed. Still, I really want to mess with it. I'm going to have to chat with the portraits 'bout it."

Some day, perhaps, Mercer's sudden appearance away from her peripheral vision would elicit a certain desired shock...but alas, for him, it was not this day either. Though him utilizing her legs as a headrest while discussing mischievous moments, contradictory actions from her point of view, was a little surprising. Her instinct was, as she did so with Finn during their book club meetings, to read to Mercer and she supposed that would be an effect means of using their time since they both had OWLs they ought to be preparing for.

But first, a discussion regarding grandpa's plaque.

"What would you do to decorate it?" she asked while shifting her weight just a bit to account for the back of his skull as it dug into her thigh. Much more comfortable now, her hand settled in his mop of brown hair and lightly combed through it. "If you could manage an audience with Peeves that may also provide some insight."

"Not all of the portraits. Just one that can get a message to my Gram's portrait in the Head's office. She'd tell me what to do." It didn't make much sense, going to his grandmother's portrait instead of just writing to the actual woman, except that the actual woman would tell his mother and the portrait couldn't tattle on him.

Mercer rolled his head back slightly to give Mitsuki a slow grin. "I just think my famous relatives deserve a plaque, just like yours have 'em. People might think I'm dating out of my league or something."

Mitsuki considered this for a moment, one of her daily to-do's consistently being to accomplish one of Mercer's wants on the day, before formulating her own theory. "Portraits only become that which they are told they are, usually a stereotype and caricature of their real life selves so it would perhaps be a Gryffindor's portrait of some sort who would be willing to relay such a message for the sake of mischief." She ought to, perhaps, be a bit more concerned with Mercer's endgame here being defacing school property...but mess was the point, so she had learned.

Her hand stilled once his head moved and sort of hovered just above his face. Her fingers were spread just enough to see that grin popping out between them. "Dating out of your league?" The only leagues she knew of were quidditch and gobstones leagues and she felt quite the uncomfortable knot in her somehow had not known Mercer was not participating in one of these. If what was even what he meant - he said the most curious of things sometimes. But still, confusion waged quiet war upon her features as she titled her head. "Why would it matter if they thought such a thing if you knew they were wrong?"

"Ah." It occurred to Mercer that he had managed to confuse, and perhaps embarrass, Mitsuki with his gentle teasing. He didn't help that banter was a way of life in the Branxton household, but he'd managed to land friends who were entirely literal all the time. Sometimes Mercer confused even himself by trying to figure out how to explain that what he meant wasn't really what he meant.

"It was just a silly thing to say, Suki. I was suggesting that you were too good for me, see? Not that anyone is even really saying that. But the point is that I want a plaque of my own."

It may not be obvious, but some of the infamous Branxton banter translated to Mitsuki on occasion. A rare occasion but still an occasion. Circumstances now were much less about understanding colloquialisms and banter and more...well...she was struggling to comprehend why anyone would think she was superior to Mercer and therefore their relationship not make sense. More so than that, was the concern that he may have internalized such a nonsensical belief.

Her expression softened at the confirmation that there were no such whisperings, which meant she need not consider them either.

"That is a relief," she nodded and resumed running her fingers through his hair as she attentively took careful stock of his every word. "What would you want it to say?"

Alfie liked to spend his time outside while it was still warm enough out to do so. He felt cooped up when he was forced to spend too much time indoors. So even though it was NEWT year and he had a bunch of homework already, he was avoiding the library in favor of the fresh air. He did at least have a book with him, so he could still do some studying. He lounged on a bench with his textbook, flipping through the pages slowly. He also had a tin of cookies his mum had send that he was munching on.

And that she kept students safe even if she didn't kill some cult dude."

He peeked at her. "Not that it's anything to sneeze at, of course. I'm sure your grandpops is also excellent."

Mitsuki could not resist but smile at his response, particularly the mention of two puddings. No offense was taken, naturally, by his words. In fact, if anything, there was an uncomfortable pang at the one of the true meanings behind grandpa's plaque.

"We know engraving spells now. We could make such a plaque," she considered aloud while her thoughts drifted a bit ahead towards certain future dates and approaching anniversaries. "Sometimes the opinion column of the Prophet calls him ungrateful for shying away from such praises. But...I believe it causes him great discomfort...being immortalized for killing another person." Her fingers still in his hair and after a bit of a pause dragged forward towards his brow where her nails circled and traced the small wrinkles that had formed while he looked up at her. "He would much rather be remembered for being generous with pudding." Smiling just a little more, though still a very faint smile unless one knew what they were looking at, the tips of her fingers traced just a little lower and over the bridge of his nose.

"I don't think you're allowed to just hang up plaques wherever you want. Or everyone would be doing it. One over there that says "Mercer Doyle Branxton fell out of this tree" and one over THERE that says "a squirrel once shared an acorn with a bird against its will on this important spot." And then all we would have is plaques and no room to do new things." He opened and eye and made himself dizzy staring at the finger on his nose.

Why was she petting his nose? Was it dirty? Mercer tried to bite her finger unsuccessfully. "Maybe the answer is less plaques, not more. If having one doesn't even really make him happy, then we should figure out what would... and do that instead. What makes him happy?"

Mitsuki could not think of any written rule in the Hogwarts handbook that specifically said that one was not allowed to put up plaques anywhere - unless such a thing was considered vandalization which was a very real possibility. However, there was something else that tickled her interest in the things Mercer had suggested. "Curious how the suggestions you have made objectively have negative associations," she observed with another casual trace of her nail along the bridge of his nose. "Would you want to have such a memory commemorated?" The squirrel and bird in question where not present so it was not worth weighing those considerations without their input.

And no, Mercer, your nose was not dirty. It was exceptionally ordinary and winsome...and came to a very pleasant rounded point which she currently found interesting to trace with the pad of her index finger.

"Family," she responded easily. Though such knowledge should not be news to Mercer's ears considering her grandpa's disposition. "...and yogurt covered raisins."

"Those are just examples. Falling out of a tree is just factual, not negative. I fall out of trees all the time." Mercer hadn't managed to snag her finger with his teeth, but he did reach up and grab her hand and press it against his nose. Smooshing the nose. "Maybe it should say 'on this bench, Mercer kissed Mitsuki for the first time."

He did kiss her palm, since he had it snagged. "That's a nice sign. But anyway, let's send him some yogurt covered raisins. And salt, but separate, if you can." Now that he was thinking about how little plaques necessarily pleased the people they were about, he was more interested in pleasing said people.

Mitsuki had not considered a career in healing, though she did enjoy that aspect of the Health and Wellness club. It was more of a hobby, akin to her interest in watercolor and adjacent to performance calligraphy. "Though you did state that the squirrel shared against its will, which a somewhat regretful statement," she pointed out just as he took a hold of her hand and she crossed her eyes briefly to focus on his fingers around her wrist and his pleasant nose pressed to her palm.

And then something else was pressed to her palm, something warm and soft, and an unusual tingly sensation trickled forth from around her deep palmer arch and throughout the rest of her veins. Her brow furrowed slightly and she lifted her palm just a bit so she could see his face and not just the back of her hand.

"I can provide a casting of my hand," she suggested with a faint smile while her eyes studied his features. "Was that the first?" She was not the sort to keep track of these sorts of things and seemed to recall some other lips to hand occurrences ...or perhaps those had been licking off melted ice cream or a particularly delectable sauce that ought not go to waste on a napkin. "Salted caramel," she offered as a compromise with salt. It may cause confusion if she simply sent her grandpa a bag of salt. "Perhaps salted caramel pretzels and yogurt covered raisins." She had grown a certain fondness for pretzels since their messy toppings predicament over the summer.

Norman sat on a stone bench as he waited for one Sable Armstrong to show up for her job fair consultation. The girl’s sign-up form mentioned pirate and secret agent as potential careers. Both of which were adventurous fields, so he thought an outdoor location would be appropriate. This particular location was also the site of a notable battle with a dark wizard, and the girl had listed Defense Against the Dark Arts as a favorite subject.

He took a moment to review the form before sticking it into a folder which contained several ministry and university pamphlets with a strong focus on Defense Against the Arts and Care of Magical Creatures programs. His bluish-green eyes momentarily flicked toward the castle. Any time now!

Of course. Mitsuki even smile a little as it seemed Mercer had come to the same conclusion her grandpa had regarding the plaque. It therefore felt like there was no further need to softly debate the topic further as she took now understood his purpose. She nonetheless tucked away thoughts of plaques and Mercer's desire for one of his own. She leaned back a little as he sat up, mostly so that their heads would not knock and her eyes softened as they widened in bewilderment as to why he was making such a curious face.

Believing herself to be fluent in Mercer-isms may be the downfall of this particularly point of conversation, and her own brow ruffled and lips pursed as she wondered how her not remembering something meant that he had performed something incorrectly. "If you know for certain then I have no reason not to believe you," she pointed out to him. Following his indication, Mitsuki expected to see someone standing at the entrance to the castle but in seeing no one...that ruffle deepened a bit more. "It will ensure he receives any salt. His Senior Undersecretary is very protective and will likely confiscate such things," she explained while stretching her legs out straight and rolling her ankles a little as a crisp breeze whooshed through the courtyard and blew her hair in the opposite direction of the castle and a chill all the way down her spine. "Do you want to follow the breeze?"

Time for the job consultation meeting, and Sable Ileana had certainly been curious as to how they had picked who was going to be the professor each person was assigned. Nothing really against Professor Carton. She liked him and honestly it seemed better than some of the other options. She just was curious as to how it all worked. Plus, she’d half-expected that she wouldn’t be contacted anyhow. A lot of people thought she was ridiculous for her ideas, aside from her circle.

She did like the area that was chosen for her meeting, though. All the war stories that included the courtyard as their setting. She knew them all, even if they weren’t quite as fascinating as the pirate stories she still counted as her favorites.

And she had waved upon seeing the professor glancing her way as she’d exited the castle. “Hi Professor!”, she added, just in case he hadn’t seen her. Any other questions could wait til she found out exactly how the meeting was going to go. Plus, was she supposed to join him on the bench or choose another one or… This wasn’t like meeting in an office or something. She was tempted to go looking around for anything interesting.

He gave the girl a minute to get herself situated before launching into the interview. “You have ‘pirate’ and ‘secret agent’ listed as possible career options. Is there anything in particular that draws you to those professions?” he asked. He had a pretty strong idea what her answer might be, and if he was correct, he may be able to offer her some pointers!

Except the start to the meeting took her by surprise. So he wasn’t just going to disabuse her of her ideas outright? She’d expected any of the professors would. Neither of her current career paths were exactly normal, nor did she particularly have any clear ideas as to how she’d go into them as a career. It was all just sort of a ‘throwing herself headlong into the fray’ kind of plan. Having access to a boat and everything, but she suspected that wasn’t the answer the professor wanted. “They’re exciting? I’m working on trying to get the strategy thing down with it all, but mostly I like the stories of pirates and think it would be amazing to actually be a real pirate captain.” The secret agent/spy angle was newer, but honestly the answer would have been the same.

You’d use strategy to track and observe the creatures, and the job would involve sailing and adventure, sort of like being a pirate but without the stealing part. What do you think of that?” He seemed to recall she had COMC listed as a favorite subject, but he had other ideas up his sleeve if she didn't’ like that one.

Norman glanced at Armstrong, trying to gauge her reaction. He was usually pretty good at reading people, thanks to his Auror background, but he had nothing! The girl’s demeanor didn’t strike him as distracted, which was a good thing, but he was curious as to what she was thinking.
