Default Questions and Answers
Viva Buymoria! Love you Twin!

New Questions Thread:

Here are the more common questions that have been answered before. Please read through them before asking your question:

Who are the Fan Fiction moderators?

Cassirin, Jessiqua, kayquilz, and sweetpinkpixie moderate the Fan Fiction forums in Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks).

I've read the rules and wondered how to actually make a ff. It doesn't appear in forums when I log in even after I read the rules. And I can't reply to a FanFic either.
Ah! You're still a newbie. You must post at least 10 times in Platform 9-3/4 before you can enter all the forums on this site.

I want to write a FanFic but where do I go to type one? (How do I make a new thread for my fan fic?)
I would encourage you to write/type and save your story on your home computer in a Word Processor like MS Word. Then come to Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks) and choose the category your story fits (Comedy, Romance, Character stories, etc...) and post a new thread in it by clicking a "Post new topic" button at the top or bottom of the forum page. Fill out the fields for title and such, including your first chapter in the first post. Click submit; a Fan Fiction Moderator will then validate your thread (or decline it if it doesn't follow the site rules) and you'll find it in the forum in which you posted it. This sometimes takes a while, depending on how busy the mods are. Before you do this, you should familiarize yourself with The FF Rules

I'm going to post a FanFic - do I have to PM it to you first, or can I post it right away?
Post it right away in the appropriate section for your rating. After it is approved by a moderator, it will show up in the forum in which it was posted.

I went to post a FanFic, I typed a bit left it minimized and left it, I came back and finished the bit and clicked ok. It turned out I wasn't logged in anymore so I logged in and it said it was saved so will it appear, in Others, in a few days. just it took me back to the forum page.
Ah, Okay I see. Snitchseeker doesn't save anything for you. If you didn't submit it then it won't show up. I think you should write it again logged in and then submit it again-logged in. Try that, because if you weren't logged in and you didn't submit it it won't save because Snitchseeker doesn't have those capabilities. Write/type and save your story on your home computer in a Word Processor like MS Word before posting so that you don't lose anything by timed-out connections.

I was writing a FanFic but I'm not sure if I sent it or not. the computer shut down right when I pressed the button. Should I wait a week to see if its accepted or should I resubmit it?
PM one of the FanFic moderators and ask them if they can check to see if your thread was posted, and is awaiting approval. If not, you can re-post it.

I tried to create a FanFic, but whenever I finish and press send in a new topic it never shows up? What should I do?
After you submit a FanFic it has to go through Approval. There, a moderator must check it to see if its okay and then accept it or delete it. You shouldn't have to wait long, approximately 2-3 days. If it's not approved for publishing, a FanFic moderator should PM you as to why it wasn't approved.

How long does it take from submitting a FanFic until it appears on the site?
There are four FanFic Mods who validate fan fiction threads. They all work as their schedules permit. Sometimes your thread will be validated within the hour, sometimes it may take a day or two. We're fairly lenient on spelling, grammar and punctuation, unless you 'typ lyk dis an uz #s 4 wurdz an stuff', don't capitalize anything or completely omit punctuation. If more than two days goes past and your Fic is still not there, PM one of the FanFic mods.

I wrote the start of a FanFic but it's been a week and it hasn't appeared. There was nothing wrong with it what could have happened to it?
It could have been declined because of:

A. Too many Grammar mistakes and it just had too many things wrong with it.
B. You didn't add enough to your first post. You need to at least write a decent amount of 1 chapter.
C. The Mod thought it was inappropriate, or violated rules somewhere.
D. There wasn't a rating in the title.

Other than that you should have been fine. A FanFic moderator should PM you with the details if your FanFic was declined. Try PMing one of the FanFic moderators.

Does your story have to approved of and found interesting before being posted by a moderator?
When you submit the first post of your story, a Moderator will read it, and if they think it is appropriate, they will approve it. They do not necessarily have to think it is a strong plot, or one that personally interests them, as long as it is appropriate and doesn't break any rules.

Do you have to put a disclaimer in because I've seen some that have them but then there's some that don't? If I didn't put a disclaimer up could that be a reason why it hasn't been approved yet?
Harry Potter FanFics must have a disclaimer, but your thread won't be declined for not having one. A FanFic moderator might remind you to put one in once it has been approved.

About how long should the first post of a FanFic be? Because that might be the reason why mine didn't get posted.
Your first post should have much of a first chapter in it. Give us some story. New threads that say things like "This is a story about Harry & Ginny hooking up and I'll post more about it later." will NOT be validated.

How do I update my fanfic?
You just post a new reply with the new chapters of your FanFic.

Are you allowed to use netspeak?
You could try, but it won't make it past the Moderators. Please use only proper English spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your threads and posts.

I've just posted (to be approved) a FanFic. There's no actual *cussing* but there's a word that is quite so. The thing is that *word* is necessary for the story, not just blatant cussing, and it helps people know what the story is about.
No, the SS board rules say we are not to allow Cursing of any sort whether it be with the **** or not, it's not allowed.

Is slash allowed here? I mean, if the FanFic is rated PG-13 or under.
Slash fiction generally refers to explicit writing that violates our FanFiction and site rules. (FF Rule # 21. There will be NO sexual scenes. If we find ANY kind in your FF it will either be probably deleted.) Same sex pairings in fanfiction are permitted but must continue to follow ALL FanFiction rules.

In the rules it says no sex scenes. Could I put that *insert character* and *insert character* went to bed together but I just skip to the morning. And what is a newbie, is it some1 who isn't a member?
I guess if you don't have too much of those get in bed together scenes and if you don't get into detail about them, then, I think you should be fine.
A newbie is someone who is new to the site and has less than 10 posts.

What if my fan-fic has some kissing in it? Is that ok?
It's ok if it's a little kiss. Not some deep emotional kiss that makes everyone squirm around their chair reading.

What kind of story would have to be PG-13? What would make a story PG-13?
A guide to ratings is here in the FF Rules.

We no longer use the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings system (PG, PG-13, R, etc..) We use our own rating system.

Can you be as dirty as you want in the over 16 (High Security Vault) forum?
NO. Being too "dirty" can cause you to get a warning and maybe even more if the content is serious enough. Read the The High Security Vault Rules before trying to post there.

People aren't allowed to flame you, right? Cuz...I'm not sure I'm so good of a writer...
Don't worry. People know what's best for them. If you do happen to have someone flame at you or made a rude comment, don't hesitate to PM a FanFic Mod. We'll take care of them.

Can our fan fics be about anything we want?
They must be Harry Potter Related.

Where do we post stories that aren't Harry Potter?
You don't. Only Harry Potter related stories are allowed.

Do you have to write about Harry Potter stuff?
It must contain Harry Potter related things.

Do you need to talk about Harry Potter stuff?
Yes.

^This is a common question. Read the answer twice before trying to ask it again, please.

What is a "Mary Sue" FanFic?
Mary Sue FanFic means that there is a made up person in your story which is pretty much perfect in every way and fall in love with one of the main characters. Most people don't like them, but I don't want people to go bashing someone's FanFic just because it's a Mary Sue.

I really would like to start a new fanfic, but I'm not sure if I'll be able or willing to commit to it. What should I do?
I say start one! Then, if you can't finish it just place it in the Inactive fanfics. If your FanFic hasn't been updated in two months it will be automatically moved to the Inactive fan fiction area. Plus, if it does get moved and you want to start it up again you could always just ask an FF mod to move it again so you can continue it.

Where do I post a story which will have tragedy (sadness) in it?
If your story is rated OVER Sa16+ then it belongs in the High Security Vault. If it's Sa13+ or lower, you can post it in the Regular Vaults.
You probably want to PREFIX it as Other Stories, or if there is tragedy because of a war or because of love then you can put it in Romance or Epic and Adventure Stories.

Can you make more than one FanFic?
Yes, if you can keep up with it. If you can't, then just request for it to be moved.

Can you read as many FanFics as you want?
Sure you can.

Does it matter how long your FanFic is?
No, doesn't matter at all.

Do you have to finish a FanFfic?
You don't have to finish it. However it would be nice for your readers and the site if you do. When a fan fic is not updated within the last two months we will automatically move it to the Inactive Fics forum.

Are one shots allowed?
Yes, they are! Just announce that your new thread is a one-shot, and after it's been open to comments for up to a month, PM a Fan Fiction Mod or Post in the Requests Thread to have it moved to the "Finished Fan Fics" forum.

I'm going to follow my character all through school, should I write it all in one FanFic or should I have like year 1 year 2 ect.?
It's up to you. You may start a new thread for each year that your character attends Hogwarts (or another known wizarding school in the Potterverse), or you can have it all in one thread.

How can I contact a Fan fiction Moderator to change the title of my story, or have it moved to another genre (Comedy, Mystery...)?
You can send a PM to a Fan Fic Moderator or post your changes request in the Requests Thread.

I was just wondering if I can change the description of my FanFic? If I can then how?
All you have to do is edit your first post with the change of description.

I had a fan fiction that I hadn't worked on forever and it was moved into the Finished Fics section. Now, I want to begin it again but make minor changes and edit the name. Can I just repost what I've already written under a new name and make my changes or is it mandatory to move my fic out of the finished fiction area?
You can make a new thread for your edited story. You may want to ask a mod to delete your old thread, if the changes aren't significant, or leave it there if the new story is significantly different from the old one.

My FanFic has been moved to the Inactive section because I haven't posted that much over the Christmas period, how do I get it moved back?
To reinstate a FanFic, you should PM a FanFic mod (see above), or post your request to move it in the Requests Thread. One of us will move your thread to the Finished Fics forum for you.

If you have a finished FanFic do you have to pm a mod?
You can PM one of the mods, or post your request to move it in the Requests Thread with your links. One of us will move your thread to the Finished Fics forum for you. If you don't PM a mod, we will probably find it when we scan for inactive fics, but there is the risk that it gets sent to Inactives and eventually deleted if it's not clearly marked finished.

Can you change the title of your FF?
Yes. You can send a PM to a Fan Fic Moderator or post your changes request in the Requests Thread.

A fanfic has recently started, there are currently only a couple of chapters up, which has the same title as mine and contains some similar story lines as mine. What should I do about it?
PM a Fan Fiction Moderator. Provide links to both stories and the Moderator will assess the situation and deal with it accordingly.

Ok I have a fanfic that I would like to post here but I also have it posted on fanfiction.net. How do I prove I'm not plagiarizing?
You should state in your first post if it's posted elsewhere, so no one thinks you've copied someone else's. It helps if your account e-mail address is the same for both Snitchseeker and fanfiction.net.

Is it ok if I'm posting the same story on 2 diff sites?
If it is yours then its fine. However you should state in your first post if it's posted elsewhere, so no one thinks you've copied someone else's.

Can we turn an RP that we did with our friends from another site into an RP? I would take out the curses. It wouldn't be plagiarizing if we got our friends permission.
RPs belong in Knockturn Alley. Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks) is for Fan Fiction only. If you want to write a Harry Potter Fan Fiction based on an RP you were part of somewhere else, that's fine, as long as you have permission from your RP partners to use their creations. Better yet, encourage them to join SnitchSeeker and write the story together.

How can you advertise a FanFic?
In your signature. If you are unable to put what you want in your signature please go to Madame Malkins. There you can submit your signature and read the rules and get a lot of signature help.

Besides advertising your fanfics in ur signatures can you advertise them somewhere else?
Nope, Only in your signature.

Is there a place I can open a topic asking for an idea for a fanfic? Would it be okay if I opened it on here...?
No, I'm afraid not, and if you post a topic like that it's going to get closed down.

I was reading the rules and they were talking about EEFFDs and I was just wondering was that stood for.
EEFFD stands for the Evil Elite Fan Fiction Darers. It's a fan fiction dare game/club which began in Zonko's Joke Shop. Unfortunately, the EEFFD is currently not an active game, but keep an eye out!

I want to post something that I wrote but it's not really a Poem, where do I post it at?
You may post it in either the Regular or High Security vaults, depending on the rating. When you go to submit your thread, choose the Poetry prefix.

If I wanted to make a mature fan fic do I just make it in the restricted place or do I post the topic somewhere first?
Go post it straight in the High Security Vaults.

How often do you have to delete fanfics? And usually for what reasons?
When a story hasn't been updated in two months, it's moved to the Inactive Fan Fics forum. Other than inactivity, there are only a few reasons why a story might be deleted, and they usually involve people breaking the rules.

I was wondering...what's up with all the "open topic (no new replies)", "open topic (new replies)", "hot topic (no new replies)", and "hot topic (new replies)" classifications? What's that all about?
Those terms refer to the status of a thread since the last time you looked at it. Hot Topics have a certain (higher) number of replies, Open Topics are open topics to which people can reply, and New or No New Replies refers to whether there are new posts since your last visit.

No, I don't think it's appropriate to post someone else's work, even with a disclaimer. If the author wishes to share it here, he or she would do so. (Look at it this way: Imagine someone recorded you singing karaoke. Even if someone thought you were really super-good, would you really want some other stranger posting it all over the internet?)

You've done the right thing. When you need a thread moved (to Finished, Inactives, or another genre) you just PM a Fan Fiction Moderator or post your request in the "Delete Thread". Posting about it here works, too, and adds your question to the FF Q&A for everyone's benefit.
Your thread has been moved.

As long as the characters belong to you or Jo Rowling (with credit) you may use them. If they're made-up characters from another Fan Fic writer's story, get permission and credit the writer in your first post please.

I don't think this is a Fan Fiction question. SS Rules say you cannot have "dirty bisnuss" anywhere on the site. Anyone posting such anywhere in the forums will have their post deleted and be warned and/or suspended, and anyone using the Private Messaging system or chat room for sexual or predatory behaviour will be banned without warning.

That's right. A quiet announcement was made here in FF Announcements. We do ask that if you add post-HBP info or create a new post-HBP thread, please announce it in the first post of your thread so that readers are warned and don't get spoiled by accident.

A Twist of Fate, by Biochemkris? It has been moved to where it can now be accessed The Finished Fics are all located here.

I don't want to ask that their posts be deleted, if they do so, but can they? If I ask? For no other reason than that I wanted to have the last word? Egotistical, I know, but I really would like to have the last say, after the stories done. Is there anyway I can ensure this?
lol. Yes, Ottery. It's your thread. Just PM me when you've posted your last and I'll whisk it away to the Finished Fics for you. (As long as it's not the middle of the night. )

It's basically Harry Potter through the eyes of 4 girls who have nothing to do with the main HP storyline, but have their own "adventures" while still being aware of the public events in the Harry Potter books. It's gonna be a 7 story set, and there's gonna be romance, and action, and adventure, and comedy, and I really don't know what to put it under.

It's related to HP, but not in and of itself ABOUT HP.

Help me?

Also...the story includes a long Author's note at the beginning, and someone told me that there's a limit to how many characters you can have in a post...Would I be able to post both the Author's note and the first update within first creating the thread?
Good questions, Melanie. If you're unsure about your genre, or your story will include more than one, go for "Other Stories". It's a safe bet, and if your story ends up leaning a certain way, we can always move it for you later.

Not sure about the character limit allowing a huge author's note. Why not PM me the first part of your story. When you post your new thread, if it doesn't all fit, I'll have read your PM and can validate/decline it based on the story bit you PM me.

It's 22000 characters. I just checked. It may be different for me because I'm an administrator, but I'm not sure. When you submit a new post, you'll get a message if you're over the limit.

About the new ranting. I'm not an active writer but I'm intrigued about it. Like I explained in a PM I'm sending, I'm having problems to see the differences between the ratings Sa5+, Sa9+ and Sa13+ I must sound dumb, but they sound the same but for minor lip-kiss kind of differences and seem to be easily split into two cathegories, not four.

Adding to it, I would like to ask why the rating is bellow the Harry Potter books in general, which I think all users in this site have read? By book 4 we have already a good description of Crucio and its effects and we get visual descriptions of wounds and blood since the 1st if not, definitely, 2nd book. Rating of the HP books is 11+ or 12+ in those two books.

My question is, shouldn't the site respond to the rating of the books it's dedicated to? Not to mention it's pradoxical to write fanfics on books while not responding to the books (to the situation, to the allowed violence and language, etc).

Nothing else.
Yes, we have ratings well below what Harry Potter contains. But we're not all likely to write entire novels here, and we're not all likely to kill off characters in our fics. A good rating system includes ratings for ALL CONTENT, not just that which you or I are likely to read or write. We're covering all bases.

Also, Snitchseeker is not Jo Rowling.

Here at Snitchseeker, we need to be more vigilant for the parents of our younger members, who discriminate between approved reading they've given their kids (the HP books) and un-tested reading (Fan Fiction by any member here). If we put ratings on all of our fics, the reader (and his parents) can tell generally how mature the content will be, and families can decide whether to read it or screen it for kids to read later.

As for not allowing content which may be common in the HP books, that is the site owner's choice. Better safe than sorry. We don't allow adult material here because most of our members are not adults. Parents are happier about letting their children to visit websites which err on the side of caution.

I think the differences in the ratings are fairly clear, but here's another way of explaining them:

pSa: pre-school style. (Think childrens' television; talking/singing puppets.)
- Romance = none
- Violence = none
- Mature situations = nothing beyond what a toddler understands.
(This is not really going to be a common rating here at SS, but we need to cover all ages.)

Sa5+: For 5 years old and up.
- Romance = Hand-holding only (5 year olds don't date, so other than hand-holding, there are no romantic situations in this rating.)
- Violence = None (A bat bogey hex would be funny to a 5 year old, but Crucio would be too scary. If you have bat bogey hexes or even Liberacorpus as your worst 'violence', your fic might fit here.)
- Mature situations = More mature than singing puppets, but nothing a 5 year old wouldn't understand.

Sa9+: For 9 years old and up.
- Romance = Flirting, friendly or awkward embraces, kisses on the cheek or a peck on the lips, hand holding (things a modern 9 year old might understand).
- Violence = Some action violence like wizard dueling, without detailed (bloody or painful) description of the effects of serious hexes. (You can use Unforgivables, but don't make them graphically detailed.
- Mature situations = Nothing a 9 year old couldn't handle.

Sa13+: For 13 years old and up.
- Romance = Same as for Sa9+
- Violence = Slightly more allowed than Sa9+, but don't make it bloody and nightmarish.
- Mature situations = Minor suggestive adult themes, like grief, death, loss.

Sa16+: For 16 years and older. *Restricted Section*
- Romance = Hand-holding, romantic embraces, flirting, kisses on the cheek or the lips are okay, minor snogging sessions (without too much detail.) No groping (sexual touching) or bedroom scenes.
- Violence = Detailed use of hexes (unforgivables too) but not too gory or nightmarish. Some blood is okay but it shouldnt' be "Friday the 13th" or "Nightmare on Elm Street"
- Mature situations = grief, death, loss, depression, suicide, cutting, mild mention of alcohol or drugs

Sa18+: For mature adults only
- explicit sex, violence, mature themes and coarse language. This content is not now or ever allowed anywhere on Snitchseeker.

Does that clear it up?

I think you should stick to Sa9+ but then in the later chapters change it to Sa13+. That's just me though...

I would say that you should choose the Sa9+, if that is what is appropriate for your fic right now. The rest is up to you, you may continue to write your fic within that category, or in the future you may decide that you are moving in to the Sa13+ direction. You can PM me at that time, and I will make the necessary changes to your rating and forum.

Years two and three of "My Little World of Magic" are...well, rather deep, I suppose. I don't recall reading anything in the rules against stuff like this so it was never an issue I guess. (plus all my readers are older than me XD)...but it deals with some tough issues, like attempted-suicide and some mild self-mutilation. There was also a sort-of murder, and alot of pain that someone had to go through to deal with it. It's often rather intense (I cried *cough*), and maybe a bit depressing? Anyway, I just looked at the sorta updated version (with the possibly added 16+) and that may be sorta where it belongs (no issues with romance though, even though it's in the romance section XD)
I suppose it would at least be in 13+?

But that feels SO weird because I'm only 13. Personally...I'd almost rather delete my fic than see it in the Restricted section. I'm not a bad kid, or anything (>.< That sounded so corney) And...yeah...I just don't know, what do you think?
Sounds like it does belong in the Restricted Section. Please don't let that deter you though! The RS isn't a bad place, or a place for bad fics! It's just that not all kids your age have knowledge or experience with subject matter as mature as that in your fic, and it's not our place to expose them to it accidentally. That's why we're rating all fics this way, so that no one encounters subjects they don't want to, or that their parents don't want them to.

If you have Sa16+ material in your fic already, we're not going to make you edit it out, but we will ask that you continue your fic in an Sa13+ manner unless you see an announcement saying otherwise.

The Restricted Section is not for bad or naughty fics! It's for fics that are just a bit more mature than what some of our youngest members may be ready for. Please don't feel bad if your fic gets moved there in this rating period. You should feel proud that your characters are tackling some pretty heavy issues, and proud that you are kind enough to rate it appropriately and protect the younger kids on this site.

Edit 05-01-06: This question was answered before Sa16+ fics became allowed in the Restricted Section, now named the High Security Vaults.

If you told your mod that your thread was Sa13+, your fic would have been moved to the Restricted Section. And if it was in the RS already but you rated it Sa9+ or lower, it might have gone into a forum in Grimmauld Place. That's the only moving that should be taking place during the implementation of the ratings system. As long as your thread hasn't been deleted, you will always find it by looking at your own profile and clicking 'find all threads by this member.'

A PG-13 film is one which, in the view of the Rating Board, leaps beyond the boundaries of the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, or other contents, but does not quite fit within the restricted R category.

First Ottery, let me say that we no longer use the MPAA ratings because they don't want us to. Sa13+ is NOT the same as PG-13.

Secondly, you seem to equate "The Restricted Section" with "Restricted Movies", or the like. That's not what the RS is for. The name of the forum refers to that part of Hogwarts' Library reserved for material meant for older students and teachers. It's a name. That's all. At Snitchseeker, it means that the content in that forum is reserved for those who are older than our younger members.

Then make it appropriate in such a way that the PARENT of a 12 year old will not object to his/her child reading it.

**** ****. If PG-13 movies...actually I think PG movies are allowed to use them too, just not excessively, but I'll get to that in a minute.
I don't recall the word 'sensuality' being used in the ratings guide (nor do I recall observing common use of that word to describe the use of one's ordinary senses ). We object to SEXUALITY in fics in Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Twelve year olds do not need to be reading/writing about these themes, as I'm sure their parents would agree. About language and the fact that **** is considered cursing; it's not a Fan Fiction rule, it's a site-wide Rule, approved and enforced by the entire administrative staff and the owner of the site; the guy who pays the bills. If you must curse, then post your story elsewhere. I cannot change this rule for you or anyone.

The words mature and Ottery don't go together in a sentence... *Ottery chasing Teddy* I think 13+ is a good divider but we need one 15+ like before, because I really don't think my story is anywhere near rated R in the movies...and yes I think dividing 13+ is necessary from 15 because there is a major difference, and you're right not to want to host 16+ on this site.
At this point, the only real thing keeping many 9 and 10 year olds out of the Restricted Section (*now called The High Security Vaults) is their own desire to stay away. Therefore, in the best interests of properly serving and protecting our members (and likely the wishes of our members' parents), the current rules about what can and cannot be posted in Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks) and/or The High Security Vaults stand at this time. Nothing lasts forever though, and If/when there is a change in what ratings of threads may be posted somewhere, we'll tell you about it, I promise.

We're not restricting your story. Everyone has access to it except Newbies, Guests, those who are in the process of registering (e-mail's not yet validated) and COPPA members (those for whom we're awaiting parental consent for their membership). All other members can access it (which is more than can access the school RP, even). It's just not located in the same location as the majority of stories right now. Being an administrator doesn't give me any special privileges about what I can post around the site, so I don't feel that you're suggesting a fair resolution to your problem.

Huck Finn and Catcher were both written a long time ago, before mass media began raising our children for us. I don't allow my kids to see movies or TV with foul language in it, and I'd rather read them fiction without foul language in it, too. Are they going to be exposed to foul language? Yes. Will it be at Snitchseeker? No, it won't. Just because North American television allows something, doesn't mean Snitchseeker should too. There will be no infractions of the site's language rule allowed in Fan Fiction or anywhere else at this time.

The problem with this word and a couple of others is that they are not bad words. Used in their proper, original meanings and contexts they're fine. However popular western culture has adopted them as expletives and uses them in inappropriate context for Snitchseeker. Therefore, they are filtered. Is it a great idea? Not really, but it's the best way to protect our members from encountering them in their improper uses. If you want, get really creative and create new expletives for your characters to exclaim. They're wizards after all, aren't they?

I'd love to say a lot of things. But I don't say them here. Rarely is there ever a real need for specific words in a piece of fiction. (Go ahead and write something to prove me wrong in that statement. I won't read it though because I'm tired of this argument.) The beauty of the English language is that it is so versatile and vast that we can find numerous ways of stringing words together to express the same idea. You do not need to use the word(s) you're complaining about. If you think you do, then allow me to recommend Mirriam-Webster's online Dictionary and Thesaurus.

Well it's not very fair to your readers, who'll have to wade through the spam in order to read your fic. Comments and constructive criticism is FINE! GREAT, in fact. Off-topic or 'short, pointless, annoying messages' or SPAM, is not cool.
SPAM is against site rules and therefore, so forbidden in Fan Fics. So the answer is no. You can't allow spam in your thread, thanks.

Thanks!
We don't delete finished stories. We keep those forever (if we can!). When a story hasn't been updated by the author in a month, it's sent to the Inactive Fics forum. If it's not reactivated and updated within 3 months of the last update, the thread is deleted forever. The posts therein are lost from the post counts of the members who made them. We don't go and manually add them back when we delete a thread.

Personal note: I don't get the fascination with post counts. Because Snitchseeker is a well-maintained site, members' post counts are flexible. They count for nothing; you don't earn status, privileges or anything by attaining a high post count.

Don't worry. We have a sub-forum JUST for the Evil Elite threads. It's HERE. Just submit your dare piece in a new thread in that forum and once it's validated by a FF Mod, you'll find it listed among the topics there. After that's up, You'll post all future dares you accept in that same thread. Good luck.

No, you did the correct thing. Unfortunately you have not read the Fan Fiction Rules which tell you that all FF threads are moderated and your new thread will not show up until a Fan Fiction Mod or admin validates it.

I've just checked the control panel and your thread is not in there. So either another staff member deleted it because it didn't follow the rules or it didn't post correctly. Don't forget to hit the 'submit' button. Try again please, after you read the Fan Fiction Rules.

EDIT 05-01-06: Actor Stories are no longer allowed on Snitchseeker.

To rate your Fan Fic, you must read the Fan Fiction Rules. All of the ratings used here at SnitchSeeker are described in detail. Once you decide upon a rating for your Fic, you must determine the forum you would like to post in, and submit there with the rating in your title. No Fan Fics are approved without a rating! So, please read the rules before submitting.

It says in the FF Rules thread that all new fan fiction threads must be validated by a moderator. They don't just show up in the forum when you post them. This may take up to two days, if mods are busy, but that is rarely how long it takes. A half an hour is a bit too fast to expect though. It sometimes happens, but it's not guaranteed. Your thread has been validated since you posted this question.

As wonderful as the story may be, it is our policy to disallow members to post stories on behalf of other people. The risk for plagiarism is very high in fan fiction as it is, and while I do not doubt your sincerity or your honesty, we cannot in good conscience bend this rule for you. I'm sorry. If your friend wishes to become a Snitchseeker member and post a story, that would be great. But we don't allow ghost-posting, nor do we host fan fiction created by non-members.

but it's been rejected, and I have no idea why, the beta reader that read over it said that everything should be fine. I can't think of anything else I can do to change it.

Thanks very much for your help.
A devoted SS fan.
Recently we've had a technical problem which we cannot explain, wherin a member tried several times to submit a new thread in the FF section and it never reached the Control Panel. It could be that you're experiencing the same problem. It is not in the Mod CP right now, has not shown up in the forum, and the threads I declined yesterday did not comply with the rules (if your beta reader checked it, yours should comply).

I suggest you keep trying once per day to submit the thread, until it shows up. Sorry I can't be of more help. I shall forward the problem to our technical team.

I never had betaread read my fan-fics before so this is the 1st time I am going to ask for one. This story isn't plagarized and it is my story. The plot of it is my own and some of the characters are mine, but the rest is JK Rowlings.

Please don't be too harsh on me and give a hard time on my story on how beter to write.
Sorry, but this thread is only for asking questions about the FF section of Snitchseeker or about the FF Rules. To find a beta reader, please browse the posts of available readers in The Snitchseeker Beta Readers Thread and PM someone to ask them to beta read for you.

It's tucked away a bit.
The old location was:
SnitchSeeker.com > Forums > The Hogs Head > The Forbidden Forest (15+) > The Restricted Section (FanFics)

The current location of mature fics on SS is:

SnitchSeeker.com > Forums > Diagon Alley > Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks) > The Gringotts Vaults > The High Security Vaults
Another way to find your thread is to look at your own profile and choose to see all the threads you've started. It would be there, linked, from that list. Above every page in the forum (in the white box beside your PM Notices) is a string that leads to the location you're in. For example, this Questions thread is located here: SnitchSeeker.com > Forums > Diagon Alley > Gringotts Wizarding Bank (FanWorks) > The Gringotts Vaults > FF Rules & Resources. Find your thread from your profile, look up to the top of the screen and you've found the RS. At least, that's one of the ways I find my way around. Another thing I do is keep a folder of Just Snitchseeker book marks. I personally find it easier to have all my SS stops bookmarked in my browser's toolbar.

I don't see it in the control panel, so either it didn't go through or another FF mod declined it. I suggest you review the FF rules and make sure your thread complies, then try again. We'll try to help you get your fic up as soon as possible.

As long as the rest of the post complied with the rules, it would have been validated. We generally fix errors in the title for you when we see them.

To find any thread by you, click on your own name from the index page of the site, where the online members are listed. At your profile, click 'view all threads by this member'. If your thread hasn't shown up in that list, then there was something about your post that didn't comply with the FF Rules (Sometimes, it's something as basic as having too many spelling, punctuation or grammar errors for us to take time to fix, so please proof read your post before submitting). Review the FF Rules and make sure your new thread complies, then try again please.

Check your own profile by clicking on your name in the member list or beside a post you made. Click on the link to 'find all threads by this member'. If your fic was validated, it will show up in the results. If it hasn't shown up in that list within 24 hours, chances are it was declined validation. Review the FF Rules and your story & title again to make sure everything complies. Then try submitting again.

This is Gringotts Wizarding Bank, the Fan Fiction department. You're looking for Madame Malkin's (Signatures and Avatars), third floor and to your right. Please do check out the Site Rules & Frequently Asked Questions on the way. Welcome to Snitchseeker!

Yes please. If you look back in this thread, we were having some trouble with the forum not sending some new threads to the CP at all, even after repeated tries. We're not sure why yet, though we have asked the Tech team to look into it.

As you may already know, our team has been doing lots of work lately to try and optimize the site and server so we can upgrade the forum software, and we're getting timeouts and database errors. Anything like that might have highjacked your post too, so we really really appreciate your patience with this process. We'll try to get your thread up as soon as we can. When in doubt, post again.

That's completely up to you. If it's more about Fred & George than it is about being funny, then I'd put it in Characters over Comedy.. but the Other category is a hard one. If you're really not sure what genre suits your story best, then it goes in Other. At least if you know it's mainly about the Twins and their personal characters/personalities, it certainly qualifies for Character Stories.

If in the course of writing it you decide it belongs in a different forum than you choose now, we can always move it for you.

My advice whenever this happens is to consult The FF Rules and make sure your thread complies with them. Make sure you have a rating in the title (see the rules for the guide to rating your fic) and that you've proof-read your work and used proper english spelling (US and UK spellings accepted), punctuation and grammar (we do not validate threads written in chatspeak or leet). Make sure your content isn't too mature and that the rating you're giving it is appropriate for the maturity of content.

If you have more trouble, please PM me and I'll try and help you out privately. We'll get your fic up as soon as we can, ok?

Any fic dealing with the issues you mentioned must be carefully written to comply with our ratings guide. Those are mature issues and a story like that should be rated Sa16+ and posted to the High Security Vaults only. I went to the site to browse the fic but it made my computer crash. As always Chris, just follow the rules about content and ratings and you'll be fine. It's your responsibility to know the rules and write accordingly. No one will fault you for choosing somewhere else to post a story that might be too mature for SS.

You might want to use a Snitchseeker Beta reader if you're not sure if you're crossing a line, as they should know our rules and be able to help you comply with them. Thanks!

Your Fanfic is validated based on your first post. Simply submit your thread with the first chapter of your FanFic. If it is approved, it will appear in the forum you posted to. Future chapters and posts do not go through the validation process, they simply appear in your thread at the time of the post. However, I will point out that all FanFics are moderated individually, so any posts that break SS rules will be found and dealt with accordingly.

Yes, one chapter per post is fine and the most common style of posting.

Collaborative projects are welcomed anywhere you can post fiction at Snitchseeker. Start your thread in whichever genre you feel it fits, and make your title something that suggests it's a game or collaborative story. Happy writing!

You can make your story about anyone, as long as it takes place in Harry's world. OR, you can write about Harry and Co. as they might exist in another world in the Fandom Crossover Stories forum. It just has to involve Harry Potter or the Wizarding World.

Also I can't change in the poetry section: Chrispotter's poems about Harry Potter characters Sa9+ to Chrisd2000's poems about Harry Potter characters and non-hp. How can I do that?

When I get replies by e-mail it says: either of them when I want to change it the original thread.

Members can only edit the content of their posts. Only moderators or admins may edit thread info, like titles.

I'll be happy to change your title for you. Please make certain that the more mature content to come doesn't exceed the Sa13+ rating, or PM me to rate it Sa16+ and move it to the Restricted Section for you. Thanks.

As for your poetry thread, please review the rules for the Sphinx's Sofa. All poetry must be Harry Potter related. I will not be editing the title of that thread for you unless Sir_Spots authorizes such a change.

Hi Marauder. The Fan Fiction department has a good-sized staff. Your fan fiction thread shouldn't take more than 24 hours at most to be validated. I know that we all try to check the control panel at least once per day for new threads.

Please read The FF Rules and this thread before asking questions.

As mentioned earlier in this thread and the rules thread/FAQ:

Once you're sure your thread complies with the rules, please submit it again and we'll help you get it onto the forums as soon as possible. Happy writing!

Yes please. Make sure you go over your post and the rules really well so that nothing ELSE keeps it from being validated.

If you're certain it complied with the FF rules, then there might have been some technical glitch that prevented it from reaching the Control Panel. Remember that all FF threads must be approved by a FF moderator and that the process can take 24 hours, and sometimes but rarely more. It is not in the CP right now, so either it was declined or there was a glitch. Please try submitting again.

I was reading the ratings guide and my story fits somewhere in between Sa13+ and Sa16+ but I wouldn't know which area to post it, either GP or the restricted section. It's somewhat of a romance story but it's the darker side of the HP world (ie, Slytherin, Voldemort, etc) and I've created some spells that are a bit intense. I don't know if I should send you a sample or not but I'm mainly just turn because it had a G rating on d.com but here it's a more mature story. If you could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
If you're concerned about exceeding an Sa13+ rating, I'd say play it safe and open your thread in the Restricted Section (High Security Vaults) with a rating of Sa16+. Remember, everyone can still access the R.S. for mature content whenever they're looking for it. We only separate it so that those who don't want to read mature content don't just stumble across it.

And I think I saw the answer to this next question somewhere but now I can't find it. Is there anyone on SS that can beta-read if I need them? Like I said, thought I saw the answer but now I can't seem to find it.

Nevermind on the first question...I didnt see the post before mine. Sorry.
No problem.

We have a thread in the Rules & Resources forum called the Snitchseeker Beta Readers thread. People who have posted it are available to beta read for you.

It was declined validation for some reason. Make sure you've read and understood The FF Rules and re-post your new FF thread. (Remember that lack of proper capitalization, spelling and punctuation may have been the culprit. Do another proof-reading or get a Beta Reader to help you before resubmitting.)

It wasn't accepted for validation. Please review the FF rules (either in The FF Rules in Gringotts Wizarding Bank and make sure you didn't overlook something that kept it from being validated. Once you're sure your thread complies with the rules, re-submit. The FF staff are pretty good about moderating new threads several times per day. If it doesn't show up within 36 hours, there's probably a reason.

Please read the Fan Fiction rules. You do not get notified if your fic isn't validated, and please give the Mods a chance to get to it. We're pretty good at processing new fiction threads, but it could wait as long as two days sometimes. (That rarely happens). You should check it over and make sure it complies with the rules and resubmit it only if it hasn't shown up in more than two days.

Thanks.

I changed that recently (don't know the date, specifically) to unify the Fan Fiction department. The Restricted Section Finished Fics was open to replies but the Grimmauld Place Finished Fics forum was not. Since I like a nice, tidy ship, I closed the RS Finished forum to new replies so that it doesn't need as much energy to moderate. Of course, I did this at a time when I was a bit short-staffed, but really, there's no need to keep it open to new comments. Members can always PM new comments to authors, if they feel the need.

Hi there! Staff do not PM members when a thread is validated or declined.

I posted a story call "lord voldemorts daughter" about two days ago, and its still not posted, i went over the rules 6 times, and followed them perfectly, i check my spelling 5 times, and I dont understand why it hasnt been posted yet! i've done everything i could think of... so whats wrong?

I can't remember if it was yours, precisely, but one recent thread in the CP had a complete lack of proper paragraph structure. Everything was smooshed together into one big paragraph and I was unable to make time to fix it for the member who submitted it. If you're concerned it might have been yours, I highly recommend a beta reader. You can find one in the SS Beta Readers Thread. Try submitting again and we'll try and get this fic up for you as soon as possible.

Quote:
A few days ago, i posted a fic called "A pleasant surprise" anddd... tis not here... it follows all the rules and everything.. so, uh... why cant I see it?

It's possible that it didn't reach the control panel, though this hasn't happened since the site upgrade. Make sure you review the FF rules again and make sure you've caught everything. Here are the most common problems that prevent a fic being validated:

1. No rating in the title. (The ratings guide is located in the The FF Rulesthread)
2. Abundance of improper spelling, punctuation or grammar (Don't forget to proof read, and get a Beta Reader if you need help)
3. Profanity or other inappropriate content. (Again, make sure your fic follows The FF Rules and the ratings guide, and that the maturity of your content fits the rating you gave it.)

Once you're confident it's all good, please post again and we'll get your new thread up for you ASAP.

Sorry, to bring this up again and take up your time, but - even with the prospect of probably annoying you with my desperate request - I just had to try once more...
Well, I thought about it and figured that (maybe) I'm not actually ghost-posting :-) . I'm not translating the story because she asked me to and then post it somewhere, but because I asked her if I could - to practice translating and now just want to know if the translated text is any good. If it's still no, I promise, I won't bug you ever again.

She doesn't want to become a member, her English isn't good enough
Sorry, the answer is still no. If she's not a member looking to be a part of our community, there's not much point in posting her work here at Snitchseeker.

You could either post them individually as one-shot ficlets (one per thread) or if they are going to have a common theme (all about one character, or all about a certain period in time or whatever) you could post them in one thread. It's up to you.

This question has been answered above.

How long does it take from submitting a fan fic until it appears on the site?

There are five FF Mods who validate fan fiction threads. They all work as their schedules permit. Sometimes your thread will be validated within the hour, sometimes it may take a day or two. (evlpez: I usually check the control panel a few times a day during the week, and at least once a day on weekends, in the morning. If you had a thread awaiting validation and it didn't show up within 24 hours, then it was declined for some reason.
You don't get a notice if it's approved or declined. If it's approved, it will just show up in the forrum in which you submitted it. If it doesn't show up, it was declined. Please allow a couple days to pass, then review the FF rules and make sure your thread complies before resubmitting.

The FF rules say that you must have some story in the first post. You can't say, "This will be about Harry and the dreaded diamond of doom and I'll post what happens after this is approved." Moderators must have a good sample of your writing in order to evaluate whether you've read and understood the FF and site rules, and to decide if your story or your writing is likely to continue to be within the rules after it's approved.

You must put that rating into your title when you submit your new thread. No thread will be approved without a rating in the title.

When new threads are declined, they're deleted forever with no way to retrieve them. I'm sorry you lost your work, but it does say in the FF Rules (which you must understand well, if you want your thread validated at all) that you mustn't rely on Snitchseeker to store your work. Use MS Word or another word processing program to write your story first (access to the spelling and grammar checking tools alone is priceless) and save it before posting because anything can happen between hitting that 'submit' button and seeing your thread validated.

There are rare occasions where the thread didn't reach the control panel for some weird reason. Please submit it again and we'll help you get your fic up as soon as possible.

-Jess
Fics labelled 'One Shot' in the first post, or that have 'The End' in the last story post rarely get deleted by mistake. It's something we look for when we're looking for inactive and finished fics. We tend not to move threads to the Finished Fics forum until they've been up a month. This gives your readers a good chance to comment on your fic, since they won't be able to reply to it after it's moved. (If you still want me to move it before that period, please PM me and I will.)

Requests to move your fic (finished or otherwise) can be made by posting in the Delete Thread (it's not just for delete requests) or by sending a private message to me or any other fan fiction moderator. We do ask that you provide a link for us, it saves us a few extra clicks to find your thread. Thanks!

'Heartbreak' complies with the rules
If it has reached the CP and it hasn't been validated, then it didn't comply. Did you remember to put an SS rating in the title? (like Sa9+ or Sa13+)?

It's possible that a technical glitch prevented your thread from reaching the Control Panel. Now that I know to watch for it, please try again and we'll try and get your thread up ASAP.

Typically, the one with the rating in the title will be validated (provided it qualifies otherwise) and the one without will be deleted.

Sorry, once a thread is declined for validation, it's gone forever, never to return. As the FF rules state, you should not rely on SnitchSeeker to save your work, since it's subject to loads of errors or glitches that could mess it up. Sorry for your loss.

As for PMing people, it would be a great deal of extra work to send messages to everyone about their story threads; and this work actually should be done by the writer before submitting. If you're not sure about your writing, check out the Beta Readers thread and see if you can enlist the help of a volunteer. They're worth their weight in GOLD, those folks.

I saw it in the Finished Fan Fiction section, but it was LOCKED! There were some little things I wanted to edit, but I can't/couldn't because of it and I don't even know why it was locked in the first place...
So why was it locked? (was it locked because I forgot to ask for it to move to the Finished F.F section?) Can it be unlocked so I can edit these small things?
When we scan forums for inactive fics, we also look for finished ones. You don't need to ask for it to be moved, if there's a "THE END" message in the last update, we tend to move it automatically up to a month after that post.

Threads in the Finished Fics forum shouldn't be locked; they don't need to be because that forum is set to 'no new replies', meaning the threads cannot receive new posts (from anyone; mods and admins too). I'm not sure why your thread was locked, that's just weird. I've unlocked it now so you should now be able to edit your posts. Let me know if any of those changes warrant moving it or other mod tools, ok?

You see, there's a scene in my soon-to-be Sa16+ F.F I'm not so sure about... you see, the story is (basically in a short and not such a great version) about how Harry and Hermione get into a fight about how controlling he is and how he has a crush on another (new) girl, so Hermione uses Draco to get Harry jealous. He catches on and using the growing relationship between the girl and him, gets Hermione mad, so Draco comes up with the ultimate plan to get Harry back...
Make it seem like... something happened between him and her in a closet in the library.
SO Ginny helps them by saying a 'code word', and they come out, acting all giggly and... giddy (I dunno, best word I can think of) and Draco's all (remember, they planned this out so nothing truly happened, they want Harry to think something did) 'we should do that more often...' and Hermione's like 'Yeah, we should...'

With the mild mention to what supposedly/Harry thinks happened... is that allowed for the rating Sa16+ or is it not? Because nothing truly happens, there's just what is said in the explanation - minor snogging (not planned between the two but yeah...) and it's barely noted, and nothing else happens - they just want Harry to think more happened.
So... is it ok or do I have to take it out?

If it's not ok, I can take out the entire chapter an a half (well, take out half a chapter and edit the other)...

Just checking before actually I get the F.F running and get to that part.
If you really want I can send half the chapter to you so you can see what I mean, but I'm just wondering...
If it's not completely written yet, then write it with the rating description in mind and do your best, then post it. Use your good judgement and you won't go wrong. If you're worried that what you wrote crossed a line, then it probaby did. If you aren't sure, send it to me or another Fan Fiction Mod to look at for you.

If you view Grimmauld Place from the Forum Index, you'll notice that it, like many other forums on SS, have been closed temporarily due to potential spoilers. We've encountered some trouble with people posting possible Deathly Hallows spoilers, so we're closed to new replies until the danger of being spoiled has passed. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's a shame that a few jerks would want to ruin things for the rest of us.

I haven't decided. Maybe just until I've finished reading so that I can come and mod the place without danger of being spoiled.
Quote:
And... with 'posting possible Deathly Hallow spoilers', does that imply that we might be revealing things in our F.Fs that might be used in the book? If so, how would most of us know if we haven't read it yet?
No not because you'd post them, but because we're having troubles with new people posting spoilers in threads around the site and we're trying to prevent that from happening. The spoilers are from the alleged BOOK LEAK that's been all over the news yesterday and today. Maybe you haven't heard. LOL. GOOD! Stay spoiler-free!
Quote:
And why're the Fan Clubs closed but not Roleplays? The roleplays have a fair amount to do with Harry Potter in some form, yet the clubs that do with one specific group or person are closed. Just seems... odd to have it closed. Most of the Wizarding World is closed - the only ones open are the Roleplays and Non-HP. Obviously Non-HP can't be closed if it doesn't related to it, but roleplays not being closed?
I'm not complaining about the roleplay thing, but I'm just curious why that's closed while Fan Clubs are.
Quote:

Just wondering overall
I'm not in charge of the fan clubs or role plays and didn't make those decisions, but I can speculate that since Fan Clubs are about actors and CHARACTERS, it is possible that people might try to post spoilers about characters in those areas. Role plays are not discussion threads, and therefore perhaps a less likely place for spoilers to be posted I guess. And since fan fiction threads contain both story and comments (about the stories and their characters), I personally decided to close them for your (and our own) protection from being spoiled. We've waited a very long time for this book and it would suck for some jerk to come and tell us who dies and stuff.

Thing is... this whole place is supposed to be closed. I closed it myself. I'm not sure how anyone is able to post in this thread. *investigates*

We'll be opening a special Post-DH fan fiction area very soon, probably before the Spoiler Ban is lifted. Like the Spoiler forum, it will be password protected so no one stumbles on spoilers. Keep watching Number Twelve for changes in the next week or so.

Firstly, this really isn't a Fan Fiction question, so I'll copy this to the Prefect's Office for everyone's benefit.

PM stands for Private Message. At the top right of your screen you'll see a block that says something like:

Welcome, evlpez.
You last visited: Today at 01:22 AM
Private Messages: Unread 0, Total 238.

Only it'll have YOUR name and tell you if you have any unread messages in your inbox. You can use this Private Message system to contact other members on the site, like ask staff specific questions about their forums, or invite friends to meet you in the Role Play somewhere. It's king of like e-mail, but it's only within SnitchSeeker and you aren't giving out your private e-mail information.

As for making friends, it is always good practise to be courteous and friendly, but to be cautious. With new people, never ever ever give out real personal information like your last name, the town you live in or other details like the name of your school. It's very easy to foster close friendships by sharing intimate details, but remember that not everyone is as they seem to be. We at SnitchSeeker encourage our members to make friends and we try very hard to make this a safe site, but you must help yourself by practising safe internet habits.

ALL Sa16+ rated material should go in the High Security Vaults at the moment, including song fics. If you make your title like this: Title - Sa16+ (song fic), then all is good. Thanks for asking this!

First, write your fan fiction in MS Word or another word processor (remember to use the spelling and grammar check ). Save your work before posting it to Snitchseeker. Decide what rating your story will have. Remember that we have strict guidelines about what kind of content can be posted. The ratings guide is located in the FF Rules thread. You must read that thread throughly before posting any fiction here at SS, and make sure your story complies.

Pick the genre in which your story fits best (Comedy, Epic Adventure, Romance, etcetera) and go to that forum in Gringotts Wizarding Bank. If you decided your fic will be mature enough to warrant a Sa16+ rating, you will post it in the High Security Vaults forum, regardless of genre.

Click the "New Thread" button -> and a reply field will appear on the next page. You might want to put a standard disclaimer in the beginning of the post, that says, "Harry Potter, his world and the characters in it were created by Jo Rowling, not me, and I don't intend to make any money from this or anything.." etc. I'm sure you've probably seen this kind of disclaimer before. Paste your first chapter in this field as well, double check it for spelling, grammar and punctuation and click "Submit new thread". (You can find a beta reader to help you with proof reading and stuff in the Snitchseeker Beta Readers thread.)

The new thread will then go to the Moderator Control Panel, where a fan fiction mod will check it the next time we go in there. If it complies with the site and FF rules, we will validate it for you, and it will appear on the list of threads in the forum in which you posted.

It could take up to two days for your thread to be validated. If after that much time, it has not shown up, review the FF rules and make sure your story complies and you didn't overlook something, then try again to post your new thread.

Also, in the "Finished Fan Fics" category there seem to be a lot of storys where the person will post 100 topics and then work on them one by one, what are these and why can't I comment them?

Thanks!
The Finished Fics forums are closed to new replies, since the stories are finished and it's not likely that any suggestions from readers are going to influence the story further. Leaving these threads open to new replies means more time spent by our moderators to moderate them as well as the active threads that are posted in every day, so you can imagine how much work that would be for our team. I appreciate wanting to tell the writers how much you liked their stories though, and I'm happy to suggest you send them a private message to do that. You can send a PM by clicking on the writer's screen name above his/her avatar and selecting 'Send a PM' from the menu, or clicking 'send this member a private message' from his/her profile.

The 100 topics things you saw are incomplete SS100 challenges. In the Challenge Arena in Gringotts is the SS100 - a challenge where people sign up to write 100 drabbles (100 word fics) about a character based on 100 word prompts we've provided. When a writer's SS100 thread goes inactive (they haven't posted in a long time) the thread gets moved to 'Finished Fics' and the character they claimed is made available for claim by a new writer. (You won't find actual complete SS100 threads there, as they're located in the Hall of Fame in the Challenge Arena.) Threads from this challenge don't have any comments in them, since that is part of the rules for the Challenge Arena, wherein each challenge (the SS100 and the SS50) has a community chat thread where readers and writers can discuss the challenge and all the threads and drabbles/ficlets in it. It's something we decided to try, to prevent spam.

Whoa. Wordy Jan. Sorry! I hope all that made sense.

Just to be sure I got it though;

So drabbles are only open to the one person who signs up to do them?
Yes, that's right. If I've claimed Severus Snape, only I may post drabbles about Severus Snape in my thread. If you claimed Lily Evans, you can write about Lily and Severus, or you could write about Severus from Lily's point of view, but it would have to some way be tied to Lily and it would have to be in your "100 Lily Drabbles" thread, not in my "100 Severus Drabbles" thread.

Click the "New Thread" button -> and a reply field will appear on the next page. At the top of the field, you'll see a prompt where your title will go. You want to show your fic's title and rating in that field like so:

Harry Meets the Vampires - Sa13+

Grimmauld Place is the old name of the Fan Fiction forums, before it was changed to Gringotts Wizarding Bank. We're still in the process of changing all the references to it around the site. So, you've found it, it's just not called that anymore. Sorry for the confusion.

It says that you aren't allowed to advertise your fan fiction in someone else's but what if you have more than one? Am I allowed to advertise one of my FF's in my other one? (Like I have one in the Epic/Adventure section, am I allowed to say "if you like romance fan fics, check out the one I have in the Romance section"?)
If it's in YOUR thread, you can mention now and then that you have more fics, but don't abuse your readers with constant pleas to check out your other work. Best thing to do is to use your signature to advertise your fics! Put in titles with links, or even one "Read my Fics here" in your siggy, linked to your "find all threads by <your screen name>" page from your profile, that way people can see all your fic threads in one list.

Recently, a friend couldn't update her FF because she couldn't find time to go on the site long enough to post a chapter. She said I could post one, so I did, but it's just occurred to me that I might not be allowed to do that. Should I have the post deleted?
As long as your friend gave you permission to post FF in her FF thread, it's all good. We encourage collaboration here as well as solo fic writing, so as long as the thread creator is happy, there should be no trouble at all.

Any story that takes place using characters/events/settings from the SnitchSeeker RPGs (of any term/time period) qualify for the SSRPG Character Stories forum. I think there are even some stories in there based on characters members plan to use in the future.

For example, Harry comes into Hogwarts as a new student and befriends Draco. And Hogwarts isn't a very nice school really.

I was wondering if I'd be allowed to submit it because it doesn't follow the canon of Hogwarts and the characters even though it is very much set in the Harry Pottert magical world. All the characters/ places are there, just changed a little.

-phew- I hope it makes sense!

Thanks!
A very small percentage of Fan Fiction stays in canon. We call stories like this Alternate Universe, because only in an alternate universe would Harry be sorted Slytherin, or Draco date Hermione or Ginny. It's very much allowed. I would personally suggest you specify in your introduction/first post that yours is an Alternate Universe (or AU) story, so your readers are warned/intrigued and ready for what you're offering. happy writing!

You can ask your readers for suggestions, or you can do a duel fic with a buddy, but at this time we don't have any rules in place or whatnot for a collaborative fic. This is something we'll talk about in the near future, however, so keep your eyes peeled.

Welcome! As soon as you hit 10 posts and can leave the Newbie hut, you are free to come and post a fic. Just make sure you've read all the rules first!

1. i just wanted to know that is it ok if i post my fic under Mature Fanfic area coz i dont know what to rate it as. though the beginning of the fic may not have any adult themes or Sa 16+ themes but maybe as the story proceeds there might be something mature in it. so is it ok to be on a safer side and post it there or will it be shifted to Sa 13+?
2. how will i know that my fic has been validated?
3. will all the chapters or the posts which i will add in the fic be validated regularly or only the first post will be validated?
my other question is that can i ask for suggestions from my readers regarding few things and incorporate them in my fic? for eg: regarding some place in Britain, France etc. as i am not from these places.
i am waiting for your reply... :-)
Wow, you are ready to go, aren't you? Lots of questions. Let me answer these one by one.

1. It's better to be safer, so the Sa16+ forum is probably best. Again, familiarize yourself with the rules. These are more mature fics, not adult themes necessarily. When in doubt, PM an FF mod or myself for our thoughts.
2. When it's been validated, it will be visible in the forum you submitted it to. If it's been a few days, it probably has not and you need to look the rules over again to be sure you followed the rules.
3. Only the first post requires validation, although the mods do read your new posts just to see how things are going.

And as for the last question, you are welcome to request input from your readers. Several writers do that, and they incorporate it at the end of a previous post. Try not to clutter your thread with spam.

I don't think it matters, as both function in the same way. If you use the Quick Post box and then hit "Go Advanced," it should let you preview your post before it goes up.

No Hon, it means it needs to be in the HP Universe.

Thanks for your help!! Oh and if this question was answered already, I am very sorry.
I hope I understand your question correctly, but if not, feel free to poke me. I believe you're asking how to post links to consecutive chapters in the first post so people can navigate through your story.

There are two ways to do this. Let me give you the directions for the HARD way, and then I'll tell you the easy way. To create links in the first thread, first, you need to grab the link from the new post. You can find it in the top right hand corner of your post as a hyperlinked number. Copy that number and post it in the following:

Code:
[u rl="put your http here"]Chapter text goes here[/url]

There IS an easier way, though. If you go into your advanced posting options or hit "edit", you should see all those nifty little post edit buttons at the top of your post. Select the one that looks like a blue ball with a link in front of it. It will pop up a box for your selected URL (the link from your chapter), and you can paste it into this box. You should get something that looks like this:

Code:
[U RL="http://www.snitchseeker.com/8245505-post555.html"]http ://www.snitchseeker.com/8245505-post555.html[/URL]
NOTE: I added a space so the link would show in html instead of creating the hyperlink
The highlighted space between brackets is where you can add your chapter title text.

Code:
[U RL=" http://www.snitchseeker.com/8245505-post555.html"]Latest Chapter of my own FF[/URL]

Hey, Mary! I'm really hoping by now that if someone hasn't read DH, they probably don't care about spoilers anymore. We do not have any spoiler bans, either in the FF forum or the rest of the site. You're free and clear to spoil away.

Are you using the hyperlink in the post number or the permalink? Try the post number, and if that doesn't work, can you post an example here for me to mess with?

I guess it depends on the writer. It makes some people uncomfortable, so you would be safe to use a more wizarding-like exclamation instead. But... it is NOT against the rules.

You should probably go with Sa13+ just in case.

As for the title, you do not have to say anything about your characters in the title, but I would include it in the first post if you're concerned.

If you've posted and its been between 4-7 days and you don't see ANYTHING, you may want to reread the submission guidelines and consider a resubmit with any changes you think you might need to make. If you just don't see anything, PM the mod in charge of the forum you submitted to.

I WOULD like to let anyone know that if you've submitted an FF to the Restricted Section in the past few days (week?) and have seen nothing, its because we're in the process of hiring a new mod for that forum. Please be patient just a bit longer.

If you have ANY question that your fic is inappropriate, it probably is. Make sure you're reading the rules carefully prior to posting. If it was not approved and you feel that it follows the SS rules, but no one contacted you, you can PM me.

The code for a spoiler tag is: [*spoiler=TEXTHERE]

You can definitely do that, just make sure to make it clear of your intention when you submit your first one-shot.

The song fic forum is no longer around... we simply didnt' have enough submissions to make it viable. If you want to do a song fic, go ahead and submit it in the forum it best fits based on the content.
