Fourth Floor On your way between classes, you'll no doubt find yourself somewhere on this floor. Or maybe you're looking for a quiet spot to read. You're in luck, there are several around here.

Default Mirror

Not far from the balcony, a large gilded mirror can be found on the fourth-floor corridor. Once upon a time, the mirror hid a secret passageway that would take anyone to Hogsmeade undetected at any time. Unfortunately, there was a cave in mid-way that made the passage end up not leading anywhere. Nevertheless, if you're in a pickle and can get the mirror off the wall and back again, you would at least have a neat hiding place.

Most people just try using the mirror to check on their appearance throughout the day. Oddly enough, however, the mirror doesn't show ones reflection. Always being shown in the mirror is a scene of handsome chandeliers, elegant landscape oil paintings, and golden draperies, which is not at all what the wall of the corridor behind you looks like. This is, of course, one of Hogwarts' many mysteries. The location of the room that the mirror is showing is unknown to everyone today. But every now and then, a dark figure can be spotted in the background before disappearing again.

Cailyn wasn’t too concerned about exams looming. OWLs hadn’t gone too badly, and the petite brunette was choosing to pretend that NEWTs wouldn’t actually be that much harder. Even if the actual name should have proven otherwise. It couldn’t really be true, right? Not if one was relatively confident as to their own knowledge, whether or not the Sorting Hat had chosen to put them in Ravenclaw. She’d adapted to Hufflepuff, after all. It didn’t mean she had to stop her Claw tendencies.

Even so, something had led her to forgo the safety of the library, or even the study hall, for her current bout of studying. Some little part of herself that wanted new surroundings, and the mirror obviously counted. She knew better than to think of what it would be like if she could actually explore the environment in the reflection, but she had a good imagination. That was good enough, and she had chosen to sit on the floor just to the left of the mirror itself with the current book she was using for study purposes.

Last time he had spent any time here was his fourth year. He hadnt even needed to look into the Mirror to find his own reflection. He had a doppleganger. Tobias Tempus was his name. A lad a year older than he and someone who looked just like him.

Simon was trying his best to spend time exploring the school to check on his Hufflepuffs whilst also doing Peeves damage control. He had heard of Peeves casting terror and chaos around again. The Poltergeist was most active.

Opening the door to this particular room, he called out to see if anyone was in. “Is everyone alright?” he asked before walking further into the room.

Ah. One of his Hufflepuffs were here.

What’s the story, Miss Cooke?” he asked offering her a kind smile.

Damage? Terror? ChAoS???!!?!?!!

If only Peeves could read minds, he'd have been in true danger of blushing. Professor Hold-on-to-your-hats was QUITE the charmer. Peeves could not read minds, but he COULD cause damage, terror, and chaos, and he could liven things up at the drop of a hat.

Or the brandish of a book. As if to demonstrate, he appeared suddenly at the end of the corridor, and did exactly that waving the book in the direction of the girl (Cailyn) at on the floor with an elegant flourish, not intending to be noticed but not going out of his way to conceal himself either. Super sneaky gift for yOU.

Cailyn was aware of the chaos Peeves had been spreading around. It wasn’t like it was really that unusual, honestly, although it occurred to her that the poltergeist had been quieter the past terms. Nott hat there hadn’t been enough to deal with without the poltergeist being as active as usual. It wasn’t her position to do anything, though. Especially not with exams looming over everything. Last term had been nice, getting the momentary break from important exams.

Even if she honestly wasn’t entirely certain on her path after graduation, she didn’t want to risk her test scores making the decision for her. Possibly that was the reason she’d sought out the out of the way study location, but apparently it wasn’t entirely so. She had looked up as she heard the voice calling inside, tilting her head slightly in curiosity as to what the person expected but otherwise not responding.
At least, not until the person came inside and she saw who it was. She’d grinned slightly at the question, and her head of house. Also possibly her favorite professor, or at least the one who taught her favorite subject. “Nothing exciting. Just transfiguration studying”. NEWT studying, to be specific.

Could an answer be weirdly prophetic? She suddenly wondered if it could as the conversation got interrupted by the poltergeist himself. Especially curious when Peeves chose not to announce his arrival, but she had seen the flourish of the book in his hand. She had been just about to say something when she noticed a glow coming from the direction of the book in her lap, or more accurately her hands holding the book. Uh…

He returned her smile. It was nice to have a student genuinely enthralled with his class. Often times, he looked out into the classroom and found a sea of sleeping faces but there would always be a handful of bright beacons that were actively staying up with his lecture. Cailyn was one of those rare individuals.

"Transfiguration.. ah NEWTs.. I remember that NEWT. What other classes are you taking for NEWTS? History of Magic naturally." He had spent hours studying in both his fifth and seventh years. Fortunately there had been a group of them that studied together but finding a nice nook that you could go solo-study in was also something important that Simon had discovered.

Simon let out a loud sigh, thinking of the Poltergeist more. Unbeknowst to him was that the Poltergeist was in this very room. If he had known, he would have made some sort of joke that he was a Peeves-magnet... a troublemaker magnet of some sorts... He had glanced at the Mirror momentarily before glancing back at Miss Cooke. That was when he saw the book that she was holding start to emit this glowing..?

"Miss Cooke.. I've never seen a book glow like that... Or are those your hands? Do you... feel alright?" Concern washed across his face.

After seven years, Cailyn was well aware that most people did not share her love for History of Magic. History in general, really, but it was Hogwarts, after all. And there was the slightest curiosity in that they didn’t study the subject as often in Muggle Studies. There were obvious parallels, but it wasn’t the Muggle Studies professor in front of her. And well above her, given her position on the ground. Another thing she was used to, though: people towering over her. Margaret was her bestie and dormmate, after all.

“Was it particularly difficult?”, she found herself asking, merely because Professor Holden had said he remembered it, not that she expected an answer. Rhetorical questions. Besides, it was NEWTs. The difficulty was right there in the name. “Naturally”, she added with another grin. “The usual subjects. Everything but astronomy and divination”. Since she may have failed those OWLs, or at least gotten a P in them. Which he probably knew.

And then there was the poltergeist situation. She would’ve been lying to herself if she’d said she had expected her head of house not to notice the glow. As if she needed another thing to worry about. “Honestly, it’s Hogwarts? I wouldn’t be surprised if there were glowing books in the library, but no. It’s not the book”. Sigh. “I feel okay?” Kind of like a human flashlight, but physically she felt fine.

Was Transfiguration difficult? He shook his head. "Not in comparison to Arithmancy. I think Transfiguration was in the middle of levels of difficulty. That being said, I thought History of Magic, Astronomy, and Ancient Runes were the easiest." He also had Professors that he really liked teaching the material. Honestly, he had enjoyed most of his Professors except the one Professor who he suspected was a Cold One but... he suspected that he ought to put that behind himself now especially considering that he had been 13 and now he was almost 40.... "Well.. I think the subjects minus the ones you mentioned will be great for you. Plus you're taking the History of Magic one so I'm sure you'll pass that one and the others with flying colours, Miss Cooke." He gave her a kind, genuine smile. He DID believe that she would do well!

Merlin. When he had become so sentimental? He had been so awkward in his youth.... As much as he hated to admit it, he had always been a big SOFTIE.

He chuckled at her comment and added with a wry smile, "Anything can happen at Hogwarts. That's the one guarantee." That motto had served him well since his third year when they had been stuck in the castle for the entire winter. So she felt alright? Okay? Okay. "Well... that's a good sign. As long as you feel okay, I think that's good. If you don't feel good, then you should go see Healer Macini..."

But she knew that.

But she knew that.
Hearing the professor’s outlook on the exams was, maybe surprisingly, helping Cailyn feel a bit more secure in her idea that she would pass them. “That’s good to know”, she replied with a smile. “Hopefully they haven’t changed too much”. She absolutely appreciated his opinion as to what he believed she could accomplish. Any positive reinforcement was nice, really. Especially when she regularly felt like people didn’t notice her. It was proof she had a place here. “Thank you”. She absolutely meant that wholeheartedly. Not that she was one to lie to a professor anyhow, especially one she respected highly.

She had no problems admitting that, either. Even when people questioned her love of the subject he taught.

His chuckle kept her from completely devolving into worry over what had obviously been done to her. Not that she thought Peeves had targeted her specifically. She knew the poltergeist was for general chaos after all. “It really is. A guarantee”. In case he wasn’t sure what she was agreeing with. Anything really could happen here at Hogwarts, and now being turned into a human flashlight was added to the list. “I definitely will go see the healer if I feel anything weird”, she promised. It was an easy promise to make, except the odd part about all of this was that she didn’t feel anything physical from this.
