Default Mr Aguilar's Office

Located in a tower that overlooks the Training Grounds is Mr Aguilar’s office. This is where the flying instructor works when he is not teaching. One of the walls has a large window that provides an excellent view of the grounds, allowing misbehaviour and accidents to be spotted easily. Another wall is decorated with photographs of every single Quidditch team that he participated in, from his first year as a Beater in Castelobruxo to the most recent U14 team that he coached. Some of them are signed by the teammates or students who moved on to become well-known professional players. Next to this display is a cupboard that stores his personal brooms (he has quite a few) and the official school sports supplies that should not be tampered with. A shelf holding books, magazines and famous player figurines stands by the back wall, along with a rolling blackboard that will often show wiggling diagrams of broom game tactics.

When in his office, Aguilar usually sits behind a handsome desk beside the window. On the desk are some more photographs - though these are of his family and girlfriend - as well as a small flag of the Argentine team and a bowl of fresh fruits. If it is still early in the day, you may also see a copy of the Daily Prophet that he has not finished reading. He makes full use of the rest of the space by spreading out the material that he is working on. In front of the desk are two wooden chairs (that he built himself!) with cushioned seats. If you wish to speak to Mr Aguilar outside of lessons, please knock on the door and wait to be invited in.

Mamie supposed since the Hogwarts Invaders were against Muggles, it would be good for her to take up some more...wizarding specific hobbies. She wasn't about to give up her dancing and hiking, no, but if she knew more about wizard sports, maybe she that would be a good thing? Like protection or something. A sporty security blanket.

But everything she knew about Quidditch had come from board games. And she was not very good at flying. She knew she needed extra practice if anyone was going to believe she took this new hobby seriously. So here she was.

Mamie knocked and silently hoped that this new flying instructor was in his office.

Mamie knocked and silently hoped that this new flying instructor was in his office.
The rolling blackboard behind Aguilar's desk was filled with lines, arrows and crosses in different colours, presenting some Quidditch tactics that he was investigating. The flying instructor sat with his back to the door, tapping the board with his wand lazily to make the arrows shoot across the board. If the diagram looked too messy to make any sense, it was precisely because he was not concentrating. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts about what the Neo-Alliance was doing: torturing staff and students, removing all forms of communication, teaching anti-Muggle lessons ... it pained him that he could not do what is right and fight against the cult, lest he put his students and colleagues in danger.

At the sound of the knock, Aguilar immediately spun around in his chair and pointed his wand at the locked door. THEY WERE HERE TO GET HIM. He would stay calm. He would stay rational. He would do anything to protect the students. Taking a deep breath, he stood up and walked over to open the door.

"Miss Turov," he said, breaking into a warm smile as relief washed over him. Of course - the alliance followers or the "inquisitorial squad" were not likely to knock politely on a Muggle-born teacher's door. He should have known. "Come in, take a seat." He opened the door to his office wider for her to enter.

As soon as she'd knocked, Mamie had decided this was a bad idea. She didn't really know this new professor...what if he was on the bad guys' side? She started hoping he wasn't actually here. Then he opened the door and -whew- he looked nice.

"Hi, professor." She smiled back, still slightly nervous, as she walked in and looked around. Wow. This guy really liked sports. He had so many Quidditch team pictures. She tried to look as she made her way to the chair but veered away to look more closely at the photos on the wall. They were signed, that was neat. "Is that you?" she asked, pointing. She glanced at the next photo over. Oh, he was in this one too. "Whoaaa... Are you in all of these?"

She had completely forgotten why she was here. On the plus side, she wasn't particularly nervous anymore.

He noticed that the Hufflepuff looked slightly nervous. Having a private conversation with a teacher could make some students nervous, but really, there was nothing to worry about. He was rather kind and most certainly NOT with the Neo-Alliance. The latter should have been pretty obvious - he didn't look like he just escaped from Azkaban prison, did he?

"Oh yes, that was me at age 17. I look quite different, don't I? They are photographs of all the Quidditch teams I was a part of," he answered as he closed the door behind him and stopped beside Mamie to look at the display that he hung up. The Quidditch players smiled and waved from every picture, and among them was a short boy/man, either holding a Beater's bat or standing at the side as a coach. Aguilar tore his eyes away from the photographs and moved towards his desk, chuckling.

"So, Miss Turov. Are you just here to look at my photographs, or is there something else I can help you with?"

She nodded. It was weird to think of professors having been students once. Mamie took one last glance at some of the photos, then followed him toward the desk. She stayed behind the chair, though, still a little too fidgety to sit down. She did have to sit through most of her classes, to be fair.

"N-no, I'm not here for the photographs, sir," she said. "I...I want to learn more about Quidditch, but..." She paused, trying to find both the courage and the best way to explain she learned about the sport from a board game only a year ago. Without actually saying out loud she was a Muggleborn, because apparently that was bad. "My family doesn't follow it." Yeah. That was good. Subtle.

"And...and I don't know...if I'm good enough at flying." She didn't know if it was lack of practice, or the school brooms, or what. Genetics, if the Neo-Alliance was to be believed.

Once he returned to his seat behind the desk, Aguilar closed the book he had been reading ("30 Ways to Fly") and set it aside. The blackboard by the back wall was still showing an indecipherable mess of crosses and arrows, so he cleared it with a sigh and a firm tap of his wand. He would have to consider those Quidditch tactics later when he could focus better. For now, he was ready to listen to what Mamie had to say. Was she not sitting down? On the beautiful chair that he built himself?? ;___; Nah, that was fine too.

He nodded as he listened to the young student's concern. He knew that she was of Muggle-born heritage, so it made sense that her family does not follow Quidditch. "You certainly need to be a good flyer to play Quidditch safely. Let's talk about flying first, then we can discuss how to learn more about Quidditch. What do you find most challenging about flying?" he asked.

"The moving," Mamie answered immediately, waving her arms around as a mini demonstration as she continued. "It doesn't feel natural, you can't feel what moves you or stops you, not like walking or swimming." Clearly, she had thought this through. Well, attempted--she couldn't wrap her twelve years of life experience around how flying worked. If she had ever driven a car, she might have found some analogy, but alas, twelve-year-olds couldn't drive.

"How come it looks so natural for some people? I feel like I'm trying to push a big ol' box up a hill, but the box is me and there is no hill." Surely that would help him understand. She finally collapsed in the fancy homemade chair. "Am I too old to learn to fly?" she asked him. Maybe that was it, and she'd have to give up this newfound Quidditch dream.

Camilo first listened without saying anything. Believe it or not, he understood exactly what she meant. That sensation of soaring through the air, supported by nothing but a thin piece of wood. It was extremely confusing for him when he first learned how to fly, though it made him feel excited rather than frightened. Exciting confusion, if that made sense. Mamie's analogy of the box and no hill was perfect, and amusing too, but he stayed silent until her next question made him snort with laughter. Sorry, he couldn't stop himself! "The 91+ age group of broom racers will laugh at what you just said. Many of them learned to fly after they retired!" Too old to learn to fly? Merlin, these teenagers ...

"It comes naturally for some athletes ... because they were born with outstanding talent. That doesn't mean that normal people like you and I should get discouraged," oh no, he was not a natural flyer either, "we can MAKE flying feel natural. How do you think we can do that?"

There was a 91+ broom racing age group. That was really old. Mamie couldn't imagine having the same hobby for 80 years, so she supposed it made sense some of those people learned to fly when they were older than she was now. That definitely cheered her up. She wasn't too old to learn!

Sitting up straighter, Mamie was still surprised that Aguilar grouped her (who could barely fly) with himself. That was more encouraging than anything else he could have said. Probably why he had become a coach and teacher. As to "making" flying feel natural...she was a Hufflepuff. That was one question she actually knew the answer to.

"Practice?"

"Yes! With lots and lots of practice, flying will feel much more natural. Moreover, you will gain confidence, which is truly important in this field," he nodded happily, glad that she did not say something like a charm or potion. There was no shortcut to improvement other than practice. It could be tough, but it was also a lot of fun if one tried to let go of stress.

"Do you think you get enough practice in our lessons, or would you like some extra time outside of class?" Aguilar asked next. He had to admit that their learning environment was far from optimal, because the students had vastly different levels of experience and abilities, and he often could not meet the needs of all students. There was also the fact that by Hogwarts tradition, weird disruptions were common in lessons, so practising outside of class hours did not seem like such a bad idea.

Mamie nodded enthusiastically in agreement. See, she just needed more time on a broomstick. Maybe she could convince her parents to buy her one for Christmas. Or Hannukah. Or her birthday. Or a "congratulations, you made it through another year at Hogwarts without dying!" gift. Though her parents didn't know about the near-drowning last term, and she wasn't sure she should tell them that a cult had taken over the school now. She might not be allowed back.

But if she had her own broom. That'd be glorious. She could practice every day.

"I think I need extra practice," Mamie confessed. "Class time just... it goes by very quickly." Plus, there were people watching. It was stressful to learn a new skill with people watching. Nobody gathered around to watch people learn to ride a bike, Mamie didn't see why they were watching them learn to fly.

A broomstick could certainly make an excellent gift! Camilo could remember the first time his parents accompanied him to the largest magical shopping area in Argentina to buy him a new broom. Being Muggles, they were utterly confused to see so many brooms stacked neatly in the SPORT supplies store ("we thought you wanted to become a sports player, not a maintenance worker!"), and were even more shocked to see the price tag on the broom that he wanted.

Anyway ... the school brooms were also good to practise on.

"That would be my fault for moving on too quickly," he sighed apologetically, "I can reserve the Training Grounds for you on ... say, Tuesday evenings? Oh, and would you like to practise alone, or with me?" Flying practice did not require supervision, though he would be able to catch rule-breaking or accidents on the grounds through the window in this very office. Frankly, he was not too concerned about Mamie regarding either issue.

Uh-oh. Mamie had not meant to imply Aguilar was teaching too quickly. She was certain the problem was her, not his teaching.

His offer of extra practice was much appreciated, though. She nodded eagerly. "Y-yes, Tuesday evenings, okay," Mamie agreed. "Er...maybe I could practice with you until I get better?" That way if the Hood Squad ever showed up while she was practicing...well, it would be obvious to them that she had permission to be there if Aguilar was actually present.

"What is your favorite part of flying?" she asked, curious again now that the whole practice more to make flying feel natural topic had been resolved to her satisfaction. She supposed Aguilar must really enjoy flying, since he was teaching it.

He took out a planner from the desk drawer as Mamie replied and wrote down his new weekly appointment. He had never needed a planner before becoming a teacher, and it was proving to be quite useful. "Of course! That's settled then," Aguilar smiled upon closing the small notebook.

His favourite part of flying? That was a good question. He tilted his head to think about his flying experience before answering. "I like the part where I kick off from the ground, Miss Turov. At that moment, I feel like I am truly leaving all my troubles behind on the ground," he waved his hands around like he was throwing invisible things on the ground, "a great stress reliever!"

"Now, you mentioned that you wanted to learn more about Quidditch, right?" he asked in return, curious about what she already knew / wanted to learn.

Mamie really tried not to giggle at Aguilar's attempt to mime leaving his troubles on the ground. Adults--especially professors--having troubles and feelings was weird. It was like when she saw her primary school teachers outside the school, like she had to remember they were human beings and being a teacher was their job and not their whole existence.

But yes, Mamie definitely agreed that exercise was a good stress reliever.

Mamie hesitated before answering the Quidditch Question. She knew embarrassingly little about the sport, in her own opinion. "Erm...yes, I have never been to a Quidditch match," she admitted. "Everything I know is pretty much from that board game Snitch Snatcher... oh, and the sports section of the Daily Prophet, sometimes." She read...some parts of some Quidditch articles. She had opened a copy Quidditch Through the Ages once or twice but...who wanted to read a textbook? History was boring.

To be honest, Camilo rarely had many problems to leave behind when he flew. He was surprisingly optimistic and carefree! Flying usually lifted his already good mood.

He raised his eyebrows, surprised - and impressed - by the unorthodox method Mamie used to learn about Quidditch. A board game and the sports section of the Daily Prophet. He gave the newspaper on one side of his desk a cursory glance. It was dated September 1, as his subscription was involuntarily cut off afterward. "Tell me more about this board game. Snitch Snatcher, did you say?" This, at least, made him laugh. "I'll recommend that you read Quidditch through the Ages, which gives an excellent overview of the sport. I'm sure they have it in the library. Once you are familiar with the rules and feel comfortable flying, you can start playing Quidditch with your friends and watching matches in the summer!"

Mamie was shocked--shocked!--that Aguilar was not already familiar with the Snitch Snatcher game. Still, she was always happy to talk about it.

"Snitch Snatcher," she repeated with a nod. "It's got a miniature Quidditch pitch, and all fourteen little players on brooms, that you move around. The beaters can hit the tiny bludgers, and the chasers and keepers have their tiny quaffle, and the seekers try to get the snitch." No need to indicate a "tiny" snitch, as she was pretty sure normal snitches were also tiny. Really, it was just tabletop Quidditch.

"Are there really that many differences in the rules from Snitch Snatcher than real Quidditch?" she asked. She was fishing to get out of having to read that Quidditch through the Ages book.

Aguilar was not familiar with many board games - they just didn't interest him like outdoor games did! This one sounded fun though, EXACTLY like real Quidditch. And they would play as the "coach" of a Quidditch team! Was this invented by a real-life coach who got frustrated by their team and wanted everything to play out his way?

"Um. It sounds like Snitch Snatcher has exactly the same rules as real Quidditch," he rubbed his neck, smiling at what Mamie was trying to do, "you can still pick up the book if you want to learn more about the evolution of the game. Truly interesting stuff. Otherwise, I'd say you are already a Quidditch expert." The book would teach her some fouls she could use to win in Snitch Snatcher. Not that he would ever approve of cheating, ahem.

Mamie was a Quidditch EXPERT?! She beamed at the man. Well, if she didn't have to read the book, because she was already an Expert, maybe she would read it. Not for ways to cheat at Snitch Snatcher. Mamie wasn't a cheater, nope, she had never cheated.

"So you're saying, I just have to practice flying, and then with my expert Quidditch...ness... I can be really good at it, even though I'm a...a...new to the sport?" Because if he was saying hard work always paid off...she believed that. Practicing spellwork usually worked when she was learning something new, so, flying was just like charms or something, then.

She hoped someday her family would get to watch her play Quidditch.

Did hard work always pay off though? Aguilar worked really hard while he was a reserve player for the Caerphilly Catapults, but never made it to the first team. After repeated disappointment, he came to accept that he was just not a natural athlete. Of course, he was not resentful anymore, as he found his love for teaching afterward. The fact remained that he had to be cautious when answering this question, because "be really good" could mean finishing a match without falling from the broom or playing for England.

"I have no doubt that you will enjoy Quidditch, even if you are new. Everyone is new to the sport at some point, after all," he said and rummaged in the desk drawer once more to retrieve a few brochures that he slid over to Mamie. "If you find that you are not immediately good at Quidditch, that's okay! You can still play for fun, Quidditch Camp and U14 are good opportunities where you can do that. If you discover that you are really good and decide to become a professional player, you can also tryout for U17 when you are older to get a feel for the career."

Mamie picked up the brochures and opened the top one. Quidditch Camp sounded fun and her parents might even let her go to something Quidditch since it was supervised. By non-murderous adults. Frankly, it sounded safer than Hogwarts, but she wasn't sure how to explain that fact to her parents and still be allowed to come back next year.

"This looks so fun!" she said, looking up from the brochure. "I used to go to camp without Quidditch, but camp with Quidditch sounds so much better!" Aguilar was such a cool professor. He knew so many things. "I have years to get better for being a professional player!" Years of hard work aka flying practice sounded so much better than years of studying history of magic or potions or something.

"Thank you, Professor Aguilar!" Mamie was smiling so much it felt like her cheeks were going to fall off.

THIS response. Getting students excited about Quidditch always made Camilo feel that teaching was a great career choice. "No problem, Miss Turov." He too had a very broad grin on his face. As for how he knew about these, volunteering as a U14 coach for more than a decade naturally made him knowledgeable about the sports teams organised by the Ministry of Magic. That was how he learned about the elderly broom racers too!

"Just out of curiosity, which position are you most interested in playing?" he asked, leaning back in his chair.

Oh, he was asking the hard questions now. Mamie blanked, looking a bit like a deer caught in the headlights. Or a bit like a Muggleborn caught doing absolutely nothing by the Neo-Alliance goons.

"I......." She didn't know where she was going with that vowel. Why was this so hard? It wasn't like she hadn't thought about it much. She had thought about it a lot, especially at her brother's football matches over the summer. She swallowed. Surely she had an answer. "Th-they all look fun?" No. That wasn't a real answer.

"Sh-shouldn't I try more than one position before I decide?" Answering a question with another question. That was some big brain maneuvering for Mamie.

Oh deer dear, he had not meant to baffle her with that question! It was, as he said, just him being curious. A lot of kids had a favourite Quidditch position that they wanted to play even before they knew how to fly. He simply wondered if Mamie also had a preference, since she knew much more about the game than the children who claimed that they would be the "skeeter".

"Absolutely, you don't have to decide right now. And you're right, they are all very fun," he smiled encouragingly. She was tall for her age, approximately "I'll be taller than Mr Aguilar in a few years" height, so he could see her playing as a chaser or even a keeper. But physical traits weren't everything, so she was correct about trying multiple positions before settling on one (or not). "Is there anything else you would like to discuss, Miss Turov?"
