After the disastrous session on dive & pull up, Flying lessons regained some semblance of normality: all students were taught various flight techniques and manoeuvres, with anti-Muggle sentiments occasionally and reluctantly expressed by Mr Aguilar to avoid the inquisitorial squad's wrath.
Things were to change in this lesson, following a particularly painful meeting the Flying Instructor had with Headmaster Rosier.
Muggle-born students were informed that they will be provided special broomsticks in class. As you enter the Training Grounds, you notice some old brooms placed on the ground. They have rough splinters at the end and unvarnished handles - they look even older and less cared for than the ancient school brooms. Just as you wonder if it’s even possible to fly on these brooms, you see that Mr Aguilar is sweeping the ground with one. He does not look up from his sweeping, but quietly notifies all arriving students to sit on the ground.
Speaking of the ground, it is verrrrry soft and warm, thanks to the multiple cushioning charms and heating spells in place.

"Hello professor. I hope you are doing well." Ash said it in a monotone that expressed zero emotion. Zero pain, zero happiness, zero feeling, nothing at all. She was in emotional lockdown. Nothing was allowed to come in or out. She was kinda like a shell. Scarcely a real person. "Nice brooms professor. Can't wait to try and fly on one." It was deadpan. Because as of the moment, Ash didn't have emotions. She just looked straight ahead. "Where did we get them from?" She took a seat. Brooms with splinters really make me feel alive. Right, because if you felt pain, that meant you weren't dead. She couldn't tell whether to laugh or cry. It was sad, but at the same time, she was making herself laugh. So she did neither, because emotion was a liability. She just stared straight ahead.

Claudine was here for Aguilar’s face. Yes, she was. Oh, right. She was here for the lesson too but whatever the reason for her presence, that was none of your business. Borrowed school broom in hand, the Slytherin made a beeline for the adult and the Ravenclaw. For the new School year, she was going to be prepared with a broomstick of her own, and not one of these pathetic ones.
Thankfully they weren’t as bad as the ones on the ground there. Wasn’t it one of the same Aguilar was sweeping with? Um…? Anyway, the old brooms didn’t really hold her attention for long. The ground did; it felt comfortable enough as though could lay down and take a nap. “Hi, Professor. Love what you did to the ground.” Without further words, the girl sat down beside Ashley.

Eden wouldn't be here if she wasn't afraid of the consequences of skipping. She'd known the second that she'd read that muggleborns would be provided with their own special brooms that this lesson was going to suck. Don't bother trying to convince her otherwise.
"Hello, Professor," she said glumly, a far cry from the excited girl that had greeted him at the beginning of the term.
With her greeting out of the way, she sat down next to Ashley and Claudine. At least the ground was cozy. Could she just stay here?
Bella headed down to flying class with her broom in hand and some skip in her step. Yes she was well aware that things weren't super peachy in the castle, but she couldn't help show a sunny attitude at least at the start of this class, since they were being taught to fly. Coming into the training grounds she immediatly spotted Professor Aguilar sweeping the ground with a broom. Weird but anyway Bella shot him a sunny smile in greeting "Hi Professor Aguilar. Will we get to practice quidditch manouvers today?" It'd be super cool and fun if they could.
Going over to the other girls Bella waved silent greetings to the three of them before she sat down on the ground a little ways a way from them but still not too far off.
Violet trudged out to her least favorite class clutching the old school broom she usually used. As she entered, she noticed a pile of old, splintery brooms lying on the ground to one side. Wow, was that what they gave you if you forgot to bring your broom? Violet looked back at her school broom and found it was looking pretty good in comparison. "Good morning, Professor," she said, smiling up at the good looking flying instructor. At least there was one good thing about flying lessons. Then she headed over to where some other students were already assembled and settled down on the ground.

She didn't want to be here. Whether she was going on about flying class or being at Hogwarts at all was up in the air but rest assured, there wasn't a smile anywhere near Emmerson's lips as she approached the professor on the training ground. Squad or no squad, this class always went south for her and the professor was getting no closer to accepting her "allergic to flying" excuse.
"Hello Professor Aguilar." The Gryffindor offered, taking a spot way out before sitting. If the whole class was sitting, things could be great but nooooooooo. There were brooms. When there were brooms, there would be flying.
When there was flying, there was an unhappy Emmerson.
See how everything came full circle? "I don't suppose you'd believe me if I said I broke my arm and need to be excused?"

He had been reluctant coming to Flying class after he had been informed he and the rest of the muggleborns would be using special broomsticks in class. Whatever it was , it could not be good. His mind went to faulty brooms. Maybe even hexed ones who attempted to throw them off of the broom. But he wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he arrived.
”Those DO fly, right?!” he asked, trying to keep his voice level as he saw the professor sweeping the ground with one of them. He would sit down later, he wanted an answer first.

Valencia didn't particularly care about flying, but she was here out of a sense of obligation. She wanted to be sure to be around should anything happen and she was always up for a chance at further... observation.
"Hello Professor" she greeted softly as she passed. She then plopped onto the ground, with her broom laid across her lap. She then glanced around to take everything in.

Well well well. Look who didn't drop Flying after all!
Honestly, it was only because the professor himself was Muggleborn that she had not dropped the class. Also because she didn't want to give the Goon Squad a reason to look her way. Also because she DID want to give the Flying Professor a chance to look her way. Or something like that.
AnYwAy, Bernie was here, dropping into a spot on the squishy ground beside Emmerson Cambridge, a decision she may later come to regret. Or maybe not, on second thought, and on hearing Emmz.
"If she did break it, and I'm not saying she did, or didn't, but if she did, can I escort her to the Hospital Wing to have it looked at?" Because Bernie was poking Em's arm right now and she didn't feel a cast or anything. Did wizards even need casts? Couldn't they fix and heal and regrow bones pretty rapidly? That was something she should have asked Recard at some point. Anyway, this getting out of class stuff was becoming quite fun for Berns! Under no one's influence whatsoever or anything.
Back to the professor, whom Bernie was now dreamily watching. "Also, hi sir." Glad to see the Goons weren't here yet.

OH NO, Bernie had actually poked her broken arm! Bernie's face contorted into one of concern for a moment, one (1) moment only, as she watched Emmerson's reaction.
Then she remembered... oh yeah, this was the girl who pushed over half the shelves in Weasley's Wizard Wheezes just to make a scene. Joke was on her, though, because ultimately Bernie walked out of there with SEVERAL things in her pockets and she hadn't had to pay for any of them. So maybe Emmerson's distraction-causing nature could work in Bernie's advantage to get her out of a class that was starting to look more like a chore and less like an ogling session.
Back to Cambridge. Bernie quickly fixed her face and petted Emmerson on the head a few condescending times. Pat pat pat. "There there, Emz, I'm SO sorry for hurting your arm... when I pushed you... in... in the Gryffindor common room earlier. I know we were just playing, but I can't believe it took till now for us to realize it was broken. Sometimes these things are sore or just sprained at first. I know how it is." She tsked softly and shook her head.
(Listen, Berns was NEVER going to win any awards for acting. She was no Upstead, to be clear.)
"I WILL take you to the Hospital Wing, though." She nodded and stood up, as though not waiting for Aguilar to agree. "Gimme your good arm, Emmerson, and you can lean on me and everything."

Kinsay liked flying. She liked the feeling of wind in her hair and soaring high above the ground! Flying lessons were always among some of her faaaaavorites. She was hoping they'd get to practice hanging upside down today. Those were always the lessons she held out for.
"Hi," she managed just as she passed by her Professor. Kinz was going to ask about all the broken looking brooms on the ground, but before she had the chance... She overheard Bernadette and Emmerson.

Delaney had made sure to braid her hair back away from her face this morning. Last flying lesson she had attended she had walked off the pitch with the largest knot in her hair at the very back of her head. It had taken her all night to brush it out. She was dressed in athletic but warm clothes due to the chill in the air. She waved silently at the professor as she collected her school broom and found a place to sit.
She tried not to notice the pile of old brooms on the ground. Everything so far this year that had appeared out of place hadn’t turned out to be anything good and Delaney was sure the outdated broom pile would follow the same trend. Instead, the brunette turned her focus onto the ground (and not the lions complaining of broken bones)… the warm, soft, squishy ground.
Mamie had been excited about the flying lesson until she saw she wasn't allowed to pick out her own school broom. Then she managed to psych herself up again, because Aguilar was the best professor and she had actually gotten better at flying, thanks to some extra practice.
But now, she saw the...the brooms for the Muggle-borns. And her heart dropped again.
He was sweeping with one of the brooms she would've had to choose from. She sat on the ground near Minjae without a word. Instead, she just gazed forlornly up at the sad brooms, then at Aguilar with the biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster. Was he really going to make them fly on these...these...reject brooms? She sighed as dramatically as she could (which wasn't very).
Camilo twitched slightly when the students began to arrive. Oh yes, it was class for time. Time for class. He was a little nervous and jumpy, but he did prepare well for this lesson. If nothing went wrong, it would satisfy the Neo-Alliance’s ideals, while also allowing everyone to have some fun. He continued to (pretend to) sweep the ground using the old broomstick - it helped with his agitation.

Oh yes, the spells. He bounced on his heels once to feel the cushioning effect. “Thank you. Cushioning charms everywhere.”

The disappointed voice of this first year really made him realise once again how bad things were getting. He remembered Eden as one of the most eager students in the beginning of term. “Hello, Miss Tilly,” he smiled sadly.

But not everyone was wearing a glum expression. There was a moment’s pause in which Aguilar stared, confused, at Bella’s bright smile. What was she so happy about? Wait, she was happy to be in his lesson! This thought made him smile genuinely for the first time in a long while. “Hello, Miss Connolly. You will, indeed.” … Since she was a pure-blood.

Sweep, sweep, sweep. The ground was actually quite clean, largely thanks to his strict no food policy. He was doing this rather mechanically, and looked up to give Violet a quick smile that did not reach his eyes. “Good afternoon, Miss Blackthorne,” he greeted. Luckily she had a decent school broom to fly on.

The next question about the special brooms was one that Aguilar did not wish to answer right away. “Good day to you too, Mr Yoon. Please sit down,” he gave Minjae a nod, which was more like a jerk of the head. Perhaps it would be better for the brooms to not fly. After all, it was much safer for a certain group of students to have both feet on the ground.

There was not much for the Ravenclaw to observe at the moment. Aguilar certainly hoped nothing would happen in this lesson other than, you know, learning. “Hello, Miss Phillips.”

“Hello, Miss Cambridge. Miss Grantham.” He stopped sweeping and watched Emmerson and Bernadette’s act without saying anything. Were ... were they even trying?? To ditch class? Or were they just trying to make him laugh? If it was the latter, they were almost successful, but he could not laugh if he wanted to be taken seriously. So he put on his stern expression and stopped them before things got out of hand. “You will both sit down and participate in the lesson, or face punishment. I also suggest you reconsider if you plan to audition for the Drama Club.”

Mamie had been excited about the flying lesson until she saw she wasn't allowed to pick out her own school broom. Then she managed to psych herself up again, because Aguilar was the best professor and she had actually gotten better at flying, thanks to some extra practice.
But now, she saw the...the brooms for the Muggle-borns. And her heart dropped again.
He was sweeping with one of the brooms she would've had to choose from. She sat on the ground near Minjae without a word. Instead, she just gazed forlornly up at the sad brooms, then at Aguilar with the biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster. Was he really going to make them fly on these...these...reject brooms? She sighed as dramatically as she could (which wasn't very).
At least the ground was cozy.
“Miss Turov,” Aguilar nodded. His heart sank when he saw Mamie’s big puppy eyes, and he quickly looked down again. He promised to help her improve, and she was getting so much better at flying. Now he was just going to disappoint her. How he wished things could be different.
After taking a few deep breaths, Aguilar cleared his throat and began the lesson.
“Welcome back to Flying. Before we continue our learning of flight manoeuvres, I would like us to discuss a key issue that all wizarding youth should be aware of: the superiority of witches and wizards over non-magical people. It is, er, very relevant to this subject too.” He said all this very fast and looked around him distractedly before realising that the broom he used to sweep the ground was still in his hand. He held it up for the class to see. “This, as well as the other brooms on the ground, are Muggle brooms. What are the differences between magical and non-magical broomsticks?”

Aguilar could think what he wanted to about his face but Claudine still found it nice to stare look at. Listen, she felt guilty because of Heath but surely the Ravenclaw would figure it was just a schoolgirl crush going on here. Still, Claudine couldn’t resist side glancing at Aguilar and his jumpiness. Oh yes. She had noticed that and couldn’t blame the man.
When the lesson got off to a start, Claudine was not at all surprised to hear the professor lead off with the ‘superiority of witches and wizards’. Really, this whole concept was getting old and boring but she knew she had to play along if she wanted to live. There could be Hoods listening to their responses right now. The thought made her anxiety rear up slightly.
Up went her hand. “Well, for one, regular brooms aren’t enchanted with certain spells. Like the Cushioning Charm.’’ Was it a coincidence the ground was enchanted with that exact Charm?
Ash nodded at Claudine and Eden. She smiled once at them, before continuing to look like an emotionless robot. "Muggle broomsticks are only for cleaning and smacking people. Wizard brooms are for actual cool stuff, like flying." Nothing in her voice showed any opinion on what she had just said. Interest, happiness, belief, hatred. Her thoughts did though. Her first thought was, that muggle broomstick must be from like, the dark ages."Also, modern muggle brooms are more likely to be made of plastic than... those weird ones from like, a million years ago or our broomsticks now." Seriously, though? That was what wizards thought that muggles swept the floor with? Ridiculous. She looked at the sky contemptuously and angrily, another slip of emotion. How do you look to the sky contemptuously? uhhhh.... well, Ash was doing it, so it must be possible. She entertained thoughts of hitting Rosier in the face with a muggle broomstick from the 1500s. It was, as stated, entertaining.

Despite the continued Flying lessons that she had attended after the first disastrous one, Lia was still much more cautious when on a broom. She kept a much closer eye on anyone that was even remotely close to her while in the air. No more collisions were needed.
With a borrowed school broom in hand, the first year made her way towards Professor Aguilar and her fellow peers. Why was... he sweeping? Dahlia tilted her head slightly, in mild confusion, her eyes asking the questions she wasn't going to voice out loud.
"Hello, Professor," she greeted softly with a small hint of a smile. She sat down quietly on the ground, taking note of how soft it was, setting the broom down at her side.
Dahlia's nose wrinkled up a little bit as she listened to Aguilar begin the lesson. The difference between muggle and magical brooms. There was a few obvious answers that came to mind. Lia raised her hand before giving her answer. "Well magical brooms are made from various types of wood and like Ash mentioned already, muggle brooms could be made from different materials."

Since that ill-fated dive-and-pull-up lesson earlier in the term, Flying had shot to the top of Heath’s “Most Likely to Drop After OWLs” list. That meant he still had several months of flying lessons left, assuming he didn’t get blasted out of the sky and die before then. Although nothing weird had happened since that lesson, he couldn’t shake the feeling that it wouldn’t last. That feeling had been all but confirmed when he’d arrived to see those splintery brooms on the ground. Let me guess, the hood brood got tired of using their wands to blast students out of the sky, so now they’ve bewitched those brooms to do it for them? He thought darkly. Then another, even scarier thought occurred to him. Would that treatment eventually extend to halfbloods like him?
He had just enough time to greet the professor and sit on the ground near Claudine and several other students before the lesson began. He looked to the professor, listening intently, and his mood instantly deteriorated. He already knew that muggles - and thus, half of himself - were considered inferior to wizards! There was no need to keep reminding him. Despite his thoughts, no sign of his emotions showed on his face as he considered the question.
The obvious answer was that magical brooms were charmed to fly, but that seemed a little too obvious to satisfy any hoods that might be spying. Better think of something else, just to be safe! Heath’s dark eyes darted from the school broom in his hand to the muggle brooms on the ground, and he noticed differences in their appearances. His hand went up, and he said, “Magical brooms are designed to be aerodynamic, so they look a bit different from muggle brooms. For example, this broom’s twigs are smoother and more compact than a muggle broom.” He held up the school broom to demonstrate his point.

Was that hunk of twigs supposed to be a muggle broom? Ashley had made a good point - nobody Eden knew swept up their mess with a broom like the one Aguilar was using.
In fact, it seemed like a pretty wizard-made broom to her. Not for flying, of course - no, it seemed like the kind of broom somebody who literally enslaved an entire species because they couldn't be bothered to sweep up after themselves would come up with.
She couldn't give that answer or she'd be in Paintown, U.K, so she frowned at the pitiful brooms the muggleborns were no-doubt meant to use and thought of a different answer. "I agree with Ashley, sir. Muggles use brooms with smooth handles and nicer bristles. But muggle parents have been known to dole out a smack with a broom - a barbaric practice, indeed." She was really struggling to not be sarcastic, but at least that last part was genuine. Broom handles hurt.
"Muggle brooms are used for cleaning up messes. Since magical folk were super-duper-smart and powerful and thought of the idea of enslaving house elves to do their chores, they use their brooms to fly places and play sports. Their brooms are much nicer than the muggle kind, too. "
She held Aguilar's gaze for a moment before returning to picking at grass.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
‘Please sit down’ was not an answer to his question. Minjae continued to wait with his arms folded over each other before he sighed and gave up. ”Fine” he said with a roll of his eyes and sat down next to Mamie.
Superiority over non-magical people. Minjae nearly snorted but refrained from doing so. He understood what the Neo Alliance was trying to make them do. Brainwash them with anti-muggle propaganda in to letting them believe that they were , as the professor just called it, superior.
”The main difference is that most muggles don't even use brooms like that , they use a vacuum cleaner or a roomba” Did all magical folk still believed that muggles used a broom? Everything was robotic these days , far Superior than what they had here. Except for the fact that magical brooms could fly.
Oh wait, he was supposed to be “anti-muggle” . ”What i meant was ,Muggles had to resort to getting help by making their brooms robotic because they were too lazy to do any of the work on their own. While we made good use of our brooms and worked hard to make them fly which is far more 'superior' ” there. good enough?
If she had known her puppy dog eyes would just make Aguilar feel bad, she probably would have tried looking less pathetic. But she really wanted to fly today, and apparently the brooms for Muggleborns were not of the flying variety.
Mamie had never seen a broom made out of wood, ever, before she came to Hogwarts. She fully agreed with all her fellow Muggleborn classmates who were trying to gently point out that "even" Muggles could grow and develop new technologies, like cleaning robots.
But if she was just going off these "Muggle" brooms, versus the actual brooms for flying...Mamie's hand went up.
"Muggle brooms are useless when there's any sort of water, because the wood gets all gross and moldy," she said. "But we wizards--" Yes, she, a Muggle-born, was grouping herself in with the purebloods. She bet she could fly better than some of them, by now. Especially those who were literally trying to ditch class-- " have brooms that can withstand water, so you can fly in the rain." Mamie had never flown in the rain. Maybe she needed to talk to Aguilar about that.

Ivy didn't like the look of those awful, ancient-looking brooms. Their presence here didn't bode well for this lesson.
But she tried to ignore them for now. She was sure they'd find out what those were for - or maybe, who they were for - soon enough.
"Wizards have developed a lot of different kinds of brooms over the years," she said, raising her hand. "Firebolts, Comets, Nimbuses... Wizards constantly improve and innovate. But Muggle brooms are just brooms. Just boring and...not creative at all." Not that they needed to be creative or cool. They were just brooms.
